Notes: Mulligan got AA/FC upgrade in this car at Lions in October 1968. Schwartz drove this car at the '69 NHRA Springnationals in Dallas and died when Pat Foster in Mickey Thompson's Mustang T-boned the Cougar. In 1968, it was reported that when Maynard Rupp left the Cougar Country car, Roy Steffey was joining with Schwartz and Pepper Meihart on the Cougar. Steffey was a big dollar guy and would have made a big impact.

Notes: Murphy was at Lions on January 28 for AHRA's second half of its Winternationals. She qualified for the 32 car field with an 8.95. In the opening round of eliminations, her improved 8.74 lost to Marv Eldridge's 8.15. Paula was at Lions on March 30, where she made three runs. The first pass was an 8.99/143.34 that beat a tire-smoking Dale Pulde in Charlie Wilson's car. Murphy lost to Al Vanderwoude's 9.07/141 in the next race when she shut off to a 9.13/146.81. Her best run was 8.89/123.79, but she lost to Bob Pickett's 8.73/165. Paula faced off against Frank Federici's "Shark" Corvette in a best of three match race at Connecticut on July 20. Unfortunately, she lost all three races and the match, running times of 8.34/173.41, 8.43/170.45, and 8.33/172.74 against Frank's 7.99/185, 8.11/182, and 8.24/155. Notes: Nicholson ran his Comet for the early part of '68. He started the season with a win at Irwindale for the New Year's Day meet. He qualified second with an 8.04 and ran Low ET of the meet in the first round, when his 7.99/172.74 beat Dick Loehr's 8.18/180. An 8.04 and an 8.03 advanced Don into the finals where another 8.04 beat low qualifier Terry Hedrick. At Lions on January 28 for the AHRA Winter meet, Don qualified #1 with a Low ET of the meet 7.63 at 180.36. A first-round 7.65/175.56 advanced when Joe Pisano broke a transmission. Another 7.72/180.72 advanced Dyno Don into the third round where his 8.02/169.85 beat Ronnie Runyan. In the semis, both Nicholson and Dick Loehr had transmission problems, but Don won the coasting contest. He was to face Jim Liberman for the title, but even though Jim gave him extra time to fix his trans, Don was not ready. Gene Snow was brought to the line to face Liberman again (he had lost to Jim in the semifinal). The starter motioned Gene to fire up and just as he did, Nicholson's car came running out of the pits. There was quite a bit of yelling by officials, fans, and racers, but in the end, Snow ran and lost to Liberman's strong 7.84. It was just a bump in the road for Nicholson as at the next race, the second annual Stardust Open, he qualified #1 with a 7.94 and set Low ET at 7.83 while beating Ed Schartman in the final. He then took on Terry Hedrick driving the "Seaton's Shaker" Corvair at a match race at OCIR, winning the first two rounds with a best of 7.97/172.74 before smoking the tires and shutting down in the last race. On March 3 at Irwindale for a sixteen-car show, he qualified second with a 7.99/180.46. A first-round 8.09/149.49 beat Al Vanderwoude (8.45). A second round 8.00/169.49 just nipped Lew Arrington's 8.03 at a fast closing 183.68. A semifinal 7.88/182.54 over Ronnie Runyan came close to his 7.81 track record. He was to face Steve Bovan in the final, but it was never run as a curfew ended the race. Then came a series of match races in April. On the 6th, he was at New York for a best of three against Hedrick. Don lost that match, but he won the following day at Cecil County where he took on another Corvair. This time he faced the "Doug's Headers" car driven by Dick Bourgeois. Don won the first race with his 8.03/170.77 beating the Corvair's 8.19/175 and in the second race, Dick fouled away an 8.39/124 while "Dyno" coasted to the win with a 9.78/89.95. While Nicholson had already sewn up the win, they came back for one more race. This time Bourgeois got the win with an 8.04/179 when "Dyno" fouled at 8.09/168.22. These two would face each other again on April 11 in Ontario, Canada. Don won their first race with an 8.47/161, but he fouled in the second and broke a transmission in the third. Shortly after that, (April 14), he faced the strong Mustang of Tommy Grove and he lost that match as well. He had a rematch against Hedrick on May 3 at Detroit. Once again, Hedrick got the better of him. In their first race, Don’s 8.36/164.83 lost to Terry's 8.08/177. He came back to win the second with a close 8.15/171.75 beating the Chevy driver's 8.16/175. In the third race, Nicholson had problems and shut off to 10.23 while Hedrick picked up the match race victory with an 8.09/177. On May 30, he competed at the Olympics of Drag Racing at Union Grove, but lost a supercharger and went out early. A match race against Bourgeois was run at Houston early in June and Don's first two runs of 8.24/161.89 and 8.66/153.55 were enough to beat Dick two straight. The Corvair's final 8.39/177 won the last race when Don shut off. By late June, Nicholson was driving the Cougar, which debuted at a match race at Capitol against Jim Liberman.

Notes: SOHC Ford, C-6 auto trans. Ran 7.35 at Detroit Dragway vs. Walt Knoch. Dyno Don's '68 Logghe car, trick Shedlik paint job. Also, Don was runner up to Paul Stage's AA/C in Super Eliminator (pre-Funny Car Eliminator) at '68 Indy Nationals. - Danny White | Nicholson's early-season '68 car was destroyed in late July in a collision on the Pennsylvania Turnpike near Carlisle, according to the 7/26/68 edition of Drag Times. Crewmembers Jim Campbell and Wally English were returning Nicholson's car to Detroit following the Super Stock Nationals. The impact threw the Cougar over the cab and onto the roadway, demolishing it. English was killed in the collision; Campbell was injured but recovered. - RT | The Cougar debuted at a match race in May against Jim Liberman at Capitol. Don lost two transmissions and the match when Jim strapped a 7.66/187.88 on him in the first race and rain kept the next two rounds from being run."Dyno also didn't have too much luck when he showed up for the Cecil Fuel Showdown on May 18. During a time trial run, he broke a timing chain, and he was unable to run in eliminations."Dyno" showed the world that he was still one of the top dogs in Funny Car racing when he showed up at Milan, Michigan on July 7 for a match race against "Fast Eddie" Schartman. Nicholson won all three races. His times were 7.66/184.04 and 7.70/182.18 in the first two races. But he really showed 'em in the last race with his 7.48/185.86. The following week (July 13), he was at Capitol Raceway for its Supercharged Invitational race. In the first round, Malcolm Durham fouled against him at Don advanced with an 8.11/165.74. He lost to Lyle Fisher's 8.19/180 in round two with an ailing 8.36/116.88. But due to the "break rule," he got back into the show for the semifinal. Once again, he faced Fisher. Lyle failed to fire this time, so "Dyno" soloed at 11.66. He met Larry Reyes in the final, and the 'Cuda had him covered, running 7.54/192 for the win over Don's 8.05/181.80 runner-up effort. - Ron Howard

Notes: Ron was at Gary, Indiana, for the AHRA Mid-West Nationals on August 11. It was an eight-car show, and in the opening round of eliminations, his 8.95/155.39 advanced when Dick Loehr lost fire. In the semifinals, he needed only an 8.55/179.21 to advance when Huston Platt fouled. Unfortunately, his good luck ended in the final, where he lost to Dick Harrell. A couple of days later (August 13), he was at Capitol's Mr. Chevrolet race. Here, he had no luck as he blew a transmission in his race against Mel Perry in the first round.

Notes: On June 2, Ron was driving the "Mr. Norm" car at US 30 in Gary, Indiana, for its East vs. West race. It was a six-car show that had all the cars run three rounds. Ron didn't do too well as he lost all three of his races. In the first race, both he and Dick Harrell ran 8.25 (Ron at 173), but Harrell crossed the stripe first. In the second race, his 8.30/176 lost to Dick Bourgeois' 7.80/183; in the last race, his 8.20/147 fell to Lyle Fisher's 7.97/181.

Notes: This restyled-for-'68 Skylark replaced the previous '66 iteration. It remained early hemi powered. Pellegrini later recounted that the Romeo Palamides-built chassis was not a successful idea. The upper and lower rails were intentionally not welded together to allow for more chassis flex. The flex made it difficult to steer and Pellegrini ended up barrel-rolling it at 175 mph at Rockford (now Byron) Dragway shortly after its debut. According to Pellegrini, he decided at that point he was a car owner, but no longer a driver. - RT

Notes: AKA Super Hugger. Mel was at Capitol Raceway on August 16 for its Mr. Chevrolet race. His 7.93/184.80 advanced over a transmission-blowing Ron O'Donnell in the "Chapman" Camaro in the opening round of eliminations. In round two, he soloed with a 10.44/94.73 when Dick Harrell lost his brakes and could not stage. But in the semifinals, his 8.04/181.80 lost to eventual winner Bruce Larson's 7.90/182. Mel was at Bear Creek, Pa. for a best of three match race against Bob Fulp in the "Limefire" 'Cuda. In their first race, Perry's 7.98/168 beat Bob's 8.01/176. The 'Cuda broke on the line in the second race, and Mel won the match with a 7.77/180.11.

Notes: The Mr. Pickett Corvette was at Lions on May 18. There were so many cars that the track formed two eight-car fields. Pickett's 9.01 was not quick enough to qualify in the low eight, but it was good enough for the #2 spot in the second eight behind Roger Wolford's 8.99 in the "C&O Destroyer" Jeep. In the opening round, Bob's 9.23/131.54 easily beat Wendell Shipman, but in the semifinal, he crossed the centerline and was disqualified. The Corvette was running rough when Pickett showed up at Irwindale on June 15 for a best of three match race against Rich Siroonian, driving John Mazmanian's AA/GS Austin for the last time. Bob only won one race, and that was due to Siroonian fouling. The Corvette's best time was only 9.32/145 compared to the gasser's 8.71/163 best. When Pickett showed up at Lions on July 27 for an eight-car show, the Corvette was now running topless. He ran 8.50/171.43 to qualify #5. Bob faced low qualifier, Ray Alley, in the first round, and despite running an 8.33/174.41, he lost to Alley's 8.41/158. Pickett was at OCIR on August 31. There were fourteen FC's that were to race in the first round, with only the four fastest ET's advancing into the semifinal. Bob ran 8.42/175.43 to beat Rusty Delling's Firebird, but he wasn't quick enough to qualify for the semifinal. On September 21, he was one of 35 cars competing in the first round for a spot in the eight-car field at Lions. Only the quickest eight cars would advance into round one. Bob's 8.37/166.35 defeated Garry Schwartz in the "Ratty Cat" Cougar. Pickett's time was good enough to advance, and in the first round of actual competition, his 8.37/176.12 won when Marv Eldridge's Corvette broke a rear end. Bob had an easy run in the semifinal when Dick Bourgois lost fire and Bob soloed. He faced Dee Keaton's SOHC-powered Cougar in the final, and despite Pickett running his best of the weekend, an 8.35/174.08, he finished runner-up to Keaton's 8.16/174. These eight-second times are impressive for a car in this configuration.

Notes: Frank was at OCIR on May 18 for a Funny Car vs. Fuel Altered race. All cars were to run three races. In his first race, he was up against Willie Borsch. Pisano got a great jump on the lights and held it to win with his first "seven," a 7.93/182.92 that beat Willie's quicker and faster 7.85/189. In his second race, he got another holeshot win when Gary Reed's late 8.09/193 lost to Frank's 8.25/177.86. In his third race, an 8.29/171.00 beat Leon Fitzgerald's troubled 9.32/117. There were two Pisano Bros. Corvairs, one with doors and one without doors.

Notes: The '68 season had to be the best for Chevy-powered FCs. Many of them were being built, often setting Low ET or Top Speed at many events. The Chevy engine was doing this at a fraction of the cost compared to running a Chrysler or a Ford. The engine lived, and it was surprising that it could not compete in TF. But many racers sure took note that building a Chevy was a far cheaper and easier way to enter fuel Funny Car racing. The party ended early in the '69 season as after the Winter meets, the Chevys were hard-pressed just to qualify at most big events, on a local level that still fared well until '70. Huston Platt was always a Chevy supporter even when they were not competitive. He never gave up, and in '68, he reaped the rewards as his Camaro ran really well. Platt took a big win over a sixteen-car field on February 18 at the second annual East Coast Funny Car Championships at Orlando, Florida. He ran an easy first-round 9.48/150 over Tom Smith's unblown 'Cuda. In the second round, an 8.29/177.86 beat Pete Gates'8.91/159. In the semifinal, an 8.27/175.51 beat Frank Federici. He set both Low ET and Top Speed in the final with an 8.25/179.28, beating Kelly Chadwick's 8.60/163. Early in April, he was at Southeastern Dragway for a four-car show. In his first race, he defeated Arnie Beswick's GTO. He lost to "Dyno Don" Nicholson in the second race, and in the third race, both he and Dick Bourgeois crossed the centerline and almost collided. On September 8, he was at Bristol for the All-American Funny Car Championships. His 8.14/182 won when Della Woods shut down early in the opening round. In the second round, his 8.25/183.28 fell to Don Biggers' 8.01/189.

Notes: Hayden Proffitt was one the great racers of the 1960s. Proffitt won many races in Super Stock with a Chevrolet 409, then jumped to a Ford when they gave him a Comet A/FX. Proffitt built a Corvair funny car in 1966. The car began with a top, but it was cut off after the car wanted to lift at speeds. Proffitt got the car to run 8.49. In 1967, Hayden took over the Grant Industries Rebel SST funny car program. Proffitt hired famed Amos Satterlee to tune the large 439 C. I. AMC engine. The problems that original bunch had with the Rebel continued with Proffitt. The red car ran 8.11 at 180.85 before being retired at the end of 1967. In 1968, Hayden put the AMC Rebel body on an unused Logghe Stage II chassis he had. By the end of 1968, AMC dropped out of funny car racing and Proffitt retired from racing for a few years. Hayden returned to racing with a rocket dragster driven by his son Brad. Proffitt later drove the "Hot Streak" jet dragster. (Photo provided by Mike Ditty. Info provided by Draglist.com files) | Started the year at Irwindale on January 1, where he qualified #14 with an 8.50 and defeated Gene Conway on a holeshot in round one, 8.49/166.97 to Gene's 8.39/173.74. He was at OCIR on April 13 where 22 Funny Car's ran. All ran round one where the lowest eight ET's would advance into round two. Hayden advanced by running 8.51/168.53 to beat Rusty Delling's 8.94/171. In round two, the Rebel broke and slowed to a 12.16 that lost to eventual winner Fred Goeske's 8.07. - Ron Howard

Notes: Dale Pulde might have only been a teenager when he began racing funny cars, but he was a very capable teenager. Some say Pulde was and is the best driver ever. The Charlie Wilson owned "Vicious Too" 1967 Camaro was Dale's second funny car ride. The flip-top Camaro replaced the mean "Vicious Vette." Vicious Too was a mid-pack runner with Pulde driving, usually running in the mid to low eights. The car was powered by a 427 Chevrolet Rat engine backed by a B&M automatic transmission. Cragar sponsored the Camaro, and the car ran the heavy Cragar S/ST wheels instead of the standard Halibrands of the day. Pulde drove the car in 1968 and 1969, running a best of 7.91 at 184. Ran as an alternate at OCIR Mfg. Championships 1968. (Photo courtesy Bob Plumer and Drag Race Memories. Stats provided by Dennis Doubleday. Info from Bill Duke and James Ibusuki). | According to an April 16/1974 issue of ND, Pulde ran a best of 7.80 in '68. Dale was at Irwindale for an eight-car show on April 28. He fouled away an 8.42/173 in the opening round of eliminations against Cecil Yother. He came back out to run a consolation race against Charlie Allen. He beat the Dodge driver with an 8.36/170.13. On May 4, Dale was at OCIR for the '68 Funny Car team Championships.36 cars were competing. Pulde did not reach the final. On May 18, he was at Lions for an eight-car show. His 8.27/175.09 qualified #5. In the first round, a blown head gasket slowed him to an 8.44/171.42 in a loss to Rich Hammons' 8.32/173 in the "Sampson."

Notes: The "Super Cuda" was one of several funny cars from the Memphis area in the sixties. Pat Collins built the car in 1968 and teamed up with Bill Taylor to race the beautiful candy apple red Plymouth. The Coleman and Taylor team had raced the "Kingfish" funny car. Coleman sold the car and name to T.B. Smallwood after the 1968 season. The "Super Cuda" proved to be just as good as the old car. Logghe Stamping Company built the chassis, and a 426 Chrysler Hemi powered the car on 55% Nitro backed by a Coleman and Taylor built transmission, of course. Larry Reyes, Larry Arnold, and Sidney Foster all drove the "Super Cuda" to countless wins. Reyes had the best times in the car with a 7.53 at 198.46, while Arnold ran 7.76 at 193, and Foster ran 7.76 at 196.69. In 1968, Reyes won the King of Kings Race at Capitol Raceway, the AHRA Drag World Finals in Wichita, and the Super Stock Invitational in Detroit. (Photo courtesy Mike Ditty. Stats courtesy Dennis Doubleday. Info courtesy James Ibusuki). | Reyes raced Ed Schartman on March 3 at Lakeland for a best two out of three match race. He took the win by winning the first two races with 8.22 and 8.27 times. In the last race, Schartman won with an 8.35. On April 7, Reyes had a tough best of three match against Tommy Grove at Kingston. Both cars were strong runners in early '68, with Grove's Mustang being the "killer car" on the match race circuit. Grove went into a wheelstand in the first race, and Reyes won with an 8.12 at a track record speed of 187.50. Tommy got a holeshot win in the second race with his 7.99 beating Reyes' track record 7.98. These were the first sevens even turned by an Funny Car at Kingston. In the final race, the "Super 'Cuda" got the holeshot, and its 8.10 beat Grove's 7.98. On April 13, Larry beat Terry Hedrick in a best of three match at Houston, and the following day (April 14), he downed Kelly Chadwick three straight, running a track record 7.94. He was at Green Valley Raceway in May for an eight-car show. A first-round 8.02/167.28 beat Bob Sullivan's 8.30/181, while in the semifinals, he soloed with a 9.54/104.40 when Ted Detar's new car broke. In the final, he faced Dick Harrell. The two had a good race, with Reyes' 7.92 (Low ET) at 177.16, beating out Harrell's 8.03/182. Early in June, Reyes took on "Dyno Don" Nicholson in a best of three match at Milan. In their first race, Don's 7.81/175 beat Larry's 7.88/183.66, but the "Super 'Cuda" came back to win the next two races for the match race with runs of 7.84/178.57 and 7.78/182.92. He won the Norwood, New England, 1/8 mile Funny Car Championships on June 21. Going into this race, the track record was held by Grove at 5.08. It was an eight-car show, and Reyes ran 5.12/146.34 in the opening round to beat "Jungle Jim" Liberman's 5.23/142. He broke the track record in the semifinals with a 5.03/149 over Lew Arrington's 5.86/115 in the "Brutus" Firebird. He faced Dick Loehr in the final. Dick's Mustang had engine trouble and slowed to 10.4 while Reyes lowered the track mark ever further with a 4.99 for the victory. Shortly after that, he was back at Milan for another match race with Schartman. Reyes won the first race with an 8.02/181 over Eddie, who blew a transmission. But the Comet was strong on that day and, after fixing the trans, beat Larry in the last two races. In the second race, Larry's 7.99/179.79 lost to Schartman's 7.81/181, and in the last race, Ed reset the track record with a 7.73 at 184 over Reyes' 7.87/189.64. Near the end of June, he went to Detroit for the Super Stock Midwest Funny Car Championships. It was a sixteen-car show, and he opened up eliminations by running 8.07/176.81 over Tom Smallwood's 8.24/159 in the "Kingfish." But a second-round 8.13/177.51 lost to Hedrick's 7.83/179. Another win came at the Supercharged Invitational at Capitol on July 13. There he ran 7.77/191.88 to beat Lyle Fisher's 7.88/188 in the first round. In round two, his 8.07/185.94 advanced when Fred Goeske blew a transmission. A semifinal 7.68/189.06 beat Arrington, who got out of shape and shut down. He faced Nicholson in the final, and he covered him easily with a 7.54/192.03 (Top Speed and Low ET), taking the win over "Dyno's" 8.05/181. By this time, the "Super 'Cuda" was considered one of the top FCs to beat as it was almost always setting top times everywhere it ran. Yet another win came at the Super Stock Nationals. There a final round 7.53 beat a blower exploding Schartman in the final. Reyes had set Top Speed of the meet at 193.12. | Confirmed 7.54/192.03 at Fremont 1968 - Mick Coyne

Notes: It was one of the last cars to put a blower on. The first time out was on June 29 at OCIR for a match race against the "Doug's Headers" Javelin, where he won three straight with a 7.95/184.04 best. He took a big win at Irwindale's Gold Cup Championships on August 3. In the first round, he ran a 7.82/176.81 over a fouling Larry Fullerton. In the semifinals, he soloed with an 8.12/181.44 when Roger Wolford's Jeep lost fire. In the final, he was up against Dee Keaton's Cougar. The two SOHC Ford-powered cars ran with Gas collecting the win with an 8.15/176.12, beating Keaton's 8.24/178. On August 31, he won a race at OCIR, running a first-round 8.04/180.36 over Don Cullinan, and in the semifinal against Keaton, he lost, but Dee hurt his motor and couldn't make the final. Ronda got back in on the break rule and won with a 7.94/181.08 when Dave Beebe broke a trans. Ronda was at OCIR for a best of three match against Keaton on September 7. Dee won the first race, but Ronda ran 8.07/182 to win the second race. The final race was decided when the Cougar lost oil pressure, and Ronda singled for the win. At Irwindale's Ford vs. Mopar race on November 16, he won two of his three races with a 7.98/187.50 best. He also won two of his three races at the OCIR Manufacturers meet on December 1 with a best of 8.00/184.04, but on his third race against Leonard Hughes, he bounced off the guardrail twice. - RH
