Notes: Vanderwoulde built his own 120" chassis for his new Charger. It used an early Hemi with M/T rods and pistons. Howards supplied the cam, pushrods, and lifters. He ported and polished the 6.1 heads himself. Up top, the GMC 6/71 sat on an M/T manifold while the injection was by Scott. An M/T blower drive ran the blower as 22% overdrive. He usually ran it on 80% nitro. A Torqueflite transmission transferred the power back to a 3.91 geared rear end. The Fiberglass body came from Fibergland Trends, and the car weighed in at 2,050 lbs. On one of its early runs, Al ran 8.06/189.80. Al ran his new Charger at Irwindale on March 3. An 8.32/155.44 qualified tenth, which was a feat, considering 30 cars were attempting to qualify. His first-round run of 8.45/151.51 lost to Don Nicholson's 8.09/149. He was at OCIR on April 13 for a Funny Car race. Al soloed in the first round, with a 9.05/161.87, but his time failed to advance him into the second round (eight Low ETs came back in round two). Vanderwoude ran Dick Harrell in a best of three match race at Minneapolis on May 12. Unfortunately, he lost two straight. Both cars went into wheelstands just off the line in the first race, and Al's 9.48 lost to Harrell's 9.37. In the second race, Dick set a Minneapolis track record at 8.01 at 184 while beating the "Flying Dutchman's" 8.39/179.28. Al also ran 7.98 at LaPlace. He ran 7.90/186.33 at Phoenix. Notes: On August 11, Wahlay faced off against Dave Pinta in the Stone, Woods & Cook Mustang for a best of three match at Epping, New England. Tony won the match by winning the first two races with times of 8.24/176 and 8.29/177. In the final race, he shut off to a 10.3 that lost to Dave's 8.36/176. Early in September, he was at Aquasco for its Funny Car extravaganza event. It was an eight-car show, and Wahlay warmed up by running 8.36/170.45 and 8.74/166.05. In the first round, he got crossed up and shut off to a 9.75/110.29 loss to George Reese's 8.35/175. Tony was at Lions for an eight-car show on November 30. He qualified #1 with a 7.76 that held up for Low ET, but in the first round, he hit the guardrail and shut off.

A semifinal 8.09/174.08 lost to Jim Liberman's 7.65/187.50. He qualified third at Sacramento for the Drag Racing Magazine Meet, and a first-round 8.29/175.43 beat Ron Runyan's 8.67. A second-round 8.52/165 beat Bob Bedell's 8.82/171. A semifinal 8.49 by Fred Goeske stopped Randy's 8.80/173. OCIR's first All-Pro race of '69, actually run on December 29, 1968, saw 28 funny cars try to qualify for eight spots. Randy's 7.88/180.72 put him fifth on the grid, meaning he had to race number one qualifier (7.61) Rich Siroonian in John Mazmanian's Cuda. Walls advanced when John's car lost a rear end, but he fouled against Jim Liberman in the semis.

Notes: Guzman and Ward didn't venture out very far from home, but they were tough to beat when they did. On June 16, Art was at Omaha, Nebraska, where he ran 7.95/184.80 to beat a fouling Gene Kidder. In his next race, Ron Leslie fouled away a 7.83/191 while he picked up the win with a 7.81/186.32. The team ventured out to California in July. On the 3rd, Art drove the Corvair to a win over an eight-car field at Irwindale. He was running well, an 8.05/185.18 in the opening round beat Ray Alley, and in the semifinal, his 8.00/187.10 took out Charlie's 8.22/172. He was supposed to face Gas Ronda's Mustang in the final, but Ronda blew a torque convertor while winning his semifinal race. In the final, Gene Conway took his place, and Ward's 8.05/186.72 beat the Jeep's 8.41/181. They won the OCIR Nitro Championships on July 6 over a sixteen-car field. Art qualified #5 with an 8.06/183.28. A first-round 7.89/187.10 beat the "Funny Bunch." In round two, an 8.08/185.94 took out Wendell Shipman, and in the semifinal, an easy 8.32/185.94 advanced when Steve Bovan broke in Nelson Carter's Charger. He faced Dee Keaton's Cougar in the final and won with an 8.10/188.28, beating Keaton's 8.48/151. On October 5, they were at OCIR again. A first-round 8.12/187.50 beat Rich Siroonian's early shut-off run. In the second round, they lost a transmission and gave Dave Beebe a solo pass. As mentioned above, at the World Finals, he was the #1 qualifier in Super Eliminator, but he fouled in the first round. In 1968, this car was the No. 1 Qualifier in Super Eliminator (no Funny Car Eliminator in '68) at the NHRA World Finals in Tulsa. Ran 7.58 in S/XS, a tenth under the record. They also ran 7.79 at Omaha.

Notes: The first time Dale drove for Jess Tyree was at Lions on May 18 for an eight-car show. He qualified with an 8.94, and in the first round, he improved to an 8.17/173.74 while beating Rusty Delling's 8.33/158 in the "New Breed" Firebird. He lost to Norm Cowdrey in the "Blue Fox" Camaro in the semifinal. Dale was running at OCIR on July 20 for an eight-car show. Unfortunately, he blew a transmission in his opening round race against Charlie Allen. On August 10, he was at OCIR for a sixteen-car show. An 8.19/174.75 in the opening round beat Gordon Mineo. He beat Gas Ronda's ailing Mustang in round two with an 8.23/170.13. Dave Beebe blew his transmission in the semifinal, and Williams advanced with an 8.34/159.01. He went up against the Jeep of Gene Conway in the final, and his 8.35/165.13 finished runner-up.

Notes: Wright was at Lions on January 28 for the second half of its Winternationals. An 8.75/155.97 qualified #15 for the 32 car field. He got to make an easy solo in round one, when Jack Chrisman blew his engine on the line. In round two, Doug Thorley fouled, and Wright advanced. He finally lost in round three to Dick Loehr's Mustang. The Lorenz and Wright car was at OCIR on April 16. All cars ran the first-round, with the lowest eight ET's moving into round two. The Nova's 8.86/168.53 lost to Fred Goeske's 7.89. Johnny or Cliff Wright or both?

Notes: Alley literally tore the roof off his three-week-old Charger at Irwindale on August 25. According to the 9/01/67 National Dragster, this occurred when his throttle stuck during a qualifying pass, resulting in a wide-open run that ended a full 1/8th mile past the finish line. He turned Low ET of 8.19 of the event in the process and returned to participate in eliminations, topless. - RT | Ran 8.62 and 8.77 at OCIR Mfg. Meet 11/25/67. Ran 8.19 at Irwindale. - DC | This car took a long time to build. Alley had wanted to have the first Charger Funny Car, but problems held the car back and it actually took 18 months to get finished. The frame was designed by Ray and Bob Brown, but the final welding was done by Don Long. The wheelbase was 118" and it used an Olds rear axle with 3.90 gears. Of course, Alley’s company, Engine Masters, built the TorqueFlite transmission. The engine was an early 354 Hemi built by Dave Cole. Ed Pink line-bored the block. The crank was a standard Chrysler unit. M/T rods and Venolia 7:1 pistons were used. Chet Herbert supplied the cam. The heads were ported and polished by Lockerman with stock 2" Chrysler intake valves. The exhausts were 2 1/8" Donovans. Tom Jobe of the Surfers built the blower running at 28% overdrive. Hilborn injection sat up top. The car was run on 70% nitro and Ray was willing to tip the can if needed. The car weighed 2,200 lbs. and within weeks of being done he ran early times of 8.46/179.98. Ray was at Fontana on Jan 7 for an eight-car show. It was a hard show to get into as 42 cars attempted to qualify for the eight positions. Ray beat the "Whinemaker" in the first round, with an 8.11/180.72. In the semifinal, he ran an easy 9.08/146.57 when Marv Eldridge fouled. In the final, he was up against "Dyno" Don Nicholson. Ray ran an 8.52/178.21 for the runner-up money as Don's 8.08/172 took the win.

Notes: Dale was at Irwindale for the New Year's Funny Car race on January 2, but he failed to qualify for the eight-car show. He went to Lions on January 8, and he now had Frank Pedregon's blown Hemi in the car where the small-block Chevy had resided. He was not in competition with anyone as there were only a few cars making check-out passes. After running 9.03/162.45, Armstrong came back out for another pass but ended up sending two rods through the block of Frank's engine. On March 19, Carlsbad had 15 cars trying to make its eight-car Funny Car show. Dale qualified #7 with an 8.89, but in the first round, he lost a transmission and could not race against Butch Leal. | Armstrong swapped his blown 352" small block Chev for a semi-hemi in '67. Glass nose also replaced previous year's stock-trimmed front quarter. (Unknown if the entire roadster shell was replaced with the one-piece unit pictured.) - RT

Notes: Beautiful Car. Debuted in 64 as a blown gas Fiat altered with chassis built by Barker himself. In 66, the Fiat shell was replaced with a Mustang shell and car began running as a flopper in local shows. Initially ran direct drive for Chrisman like launches. Blown 427 Wedge eventually ran mid 8's at 170 plus. Car won Comp Eliminator at 67 HRM Championships. Car was sold to Aussie racer in late 68, but he ran it with 392.
