Notes: Drove the former Ongais car after wrecking Maverick. This car came to an end at Lions on June 21. A new engine was being tested and regular driver Danny Ongais had broken three fingers in the Baja 500 race. Behling stepped in to test the car. On the first pass the Mustang ran well, but on the second attempt, the front end came up. Arnie backed out of it and looked like he had it saved. Unfortunately, the car took a sharp turn and crashed hard into the guardrail. It bounced off and continued to roll about 100 feet downtrack before coming to a stop upside down on fire. Arnie was able to walk away from the crash, but the car was history. There were lots of other rumors about the Mustang's demise, but this was reported in a Drag News Magazine from '70. Ironically, this car was credited with a 6.96 way back in September of '69. The day before this crash, on June 20 at New York International, Leroy Goldstein ran the first "accepted" six second times.

That was pretty impressive considering that there were 25 cars attempting to qualify. Notes: Paul Stefansky's '69 Mach 1, Logghe Chassis, Shedlik body (very few of these were out there - Tom Grove, Gas Rhonda, K&G, Jack Christman), Shedlik paint, Hatton lettering. I think Hatton's son Bryan has this car now. | Al Graeber beat Stefansky three straight at a match race at Indianapolis in April. It wasn't a good showing for the Super Stang as it lost fire in round one, and just got beat by Graeber's 7.56/197.06 in the second. On the third pass, he lost a blower. Paul raced at the Super Stock Nationals, but he fouled in round one. At a sixteen-car Funny Car race on June 30 at Epping N. H., Paul lost to Kosty Ivanof in round two. During a sixteen-car race in Connecticut on July 5, Paul ran a first-round 7.92, a holeshot 7.66/196.07 beat Lew Arrington's quicker 7.59/185.95, and a 7.69/195.65 over Bruce Larson's 7.81/186 in the semis. In the final against Jim Liberman, he stepped it up to a 7.59/193.54 win. On July 25, Sunset Drag Strip held their sixth annual Funny Car Nationals. Paul ran a best of 5.28 on the eighth-mile strip, making it to the semis before losing to Bruce Larson. Stefansky also raced at the fourth annual New England Funny Car Nationals on September 20, winning his first-round race but not advancing to the finals. He ran well again at an eight-car show at Epping on October 25, but in the first round, Bill Flynn's 7.08/209 beat his 7.3/197. - Ron Howard

Notes: 398" early hemi, Hilborn bug catcher, TorqueFlite, Logghe chassis combo. The car survived into a third race season. Featured in 3/68 SS&DI magazine. Photo from Connecticut Dragway 9/07/70. - RT | Lew Arrington continued to campaign his Firebird for one last season. The chassis was from Logghe and the body from Fiberglass Trends. The early 392 Hemi used Ansen pistons and rods, an Engle cam, and heads by Mondello. Even though the car was now in its third year of competition, he was still able to set track records with it. | Arrington started the season at Fremont's New Year's Day race. It was a six car show. In his first race he ran 7.62/187.50, but he lost to Pat Minick's 7.48/194 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." In his second race, a 7.55/184.04 beat Jim Liberman's 7.83/189. Lew got another win in his third race with a 7.60/190.66 when Kip Brundage got crossed up and shut off in the "Parts Mart" Camaro. Lew qualified thirteenth with a 7.71 at the NHRA Winternationals. He lost to Gene Snow in round one. On February 15 at the Northern Nationals at Fremont, he lost a close first-round race to his friend Liberman. Jim's 7.57/195.22 beat Lew's 7.58/189.46. Another first-round loss came at the Super Stock Nationals showing the once potent car was getting a little old. Up in Toronto, Canada, in May for a Funny Car meet in Cayuga saw Arrington win his first-round race with a 7.95/180.36 over Larry Arnold. He failed to make it into the finals, but on May 31 he did at Connecticut running a 7.48/190.27, a 7.44/190.27 again, and a 7.49/189.07 in the semis before losing in the final to Phil Castronovo's 7.36/200.00 with an off pace 9.04/105. Still at Connecticut on July 5, Lew's first-round 7.51/188.28 beat Al Graeber, but Paul Stefansky's holeshot 7.66/196.07 beat his quicker 7.59/185.95. Arrington got back in on the break rule, but his 8.14/169.49 in the semis was no match for Jim Liberman's 7.42/189. Old car or not, on July 12 at Suffolk, Lew claimed a victory running 7.59/189.86, 7.53/190.66, and a 7.52 at 190.66 again in the semis before beating Bryan Teal in the final. There was a lot of strong competition with Don Schumacher, Jim Liberman, Charlie Allen, Phil Castronovo, and Malcolm Durham in the eight-car field. At Budds Creek, Maryland, Lew beat Liberman with a 7.68 in round one, before losing to a Larry Reyes holeshot in round two with Lew's 7.55/193 unable to catch Reyes' 7.58/195. At Epping on August 9, he beat Bruce Larson two straight with a 7.57/191 best and he stayed at Epping to race Tommy Grove the next day. Even though he ran strong 7.54/196.06 and 7.58/186.32 times he lost to Grove's 7.25/196 and 7.22/201. At the fourth annual New England Funny Car Nationals on September 20, Lew ran a first-round 7.47/196 over Pete Hill, but in the next round Dick Bourgeois' 7.31 dropped him. | Best NHRA times were 7.612/195.22.

Notes: Flipped & flew at OCIR. Ran 7.45 at Lions. Mike Gagnon information. | Pickett started the season on January 1 at Irwindale's New Year's Day Race. He qualified #9, but lost to low qualifier Tommy Grove in the first round. Bob ran 7.82/182.18 in the loss. Pickett was back at Irwindale on January 26 for an eight-car show. Unfortunately, he got crossed up in the first round, and shut off giving Ed Lenarth the win. He was at Lions on February 14 for another eight-car show that had 30 cars attempting to qualify. Bob made the show, but in the first round, took a little snooze when his quicker 7.35 lost to Tom McEwen's 7.41. Famoso had only seven funny cars show up so making the eight-car field was easy. Pickett met Dave Beebe in the first round, and Beebe's 7.86/189 beat the Javelin's 7.88/182.40. On March 28, he competed at the final OCIR All Pro event. It was a sixteen-car field. In the first round, his 7.57/194.80 beat Steve Bovan who blew a motor. In the second round, he got out of shape and lost to Mike Snively in Jim Annin's Challenger. He returned to OCIR on April 18 for an eight-car show. In the first round, an off pace 8.37/182.18 lost to Danny Ongais' 7.61/184 in Mickey Thompson's Mustang. The last event this car ever competed in was the Big Four Championships at OCIR on May 2. Bob ran 7.45/195.65 in the first round, while beating Ron Leslie's Cougar, but at the top end of the track, the Javelin became airborne. The car came down hard and was totally destroyed. Bob was taken to the hospital with injuries. National Dragster list 7.25/201 best.rn

Notes: For sale ad claimed the car was guaranteed to run 7.40 at 195. Confirmed 7.50 at Tri-City 1970. | After having a great season in '69, Burkhart found the going a lot more tough in '70. The big Chevy "Rat" motors were having a real hard time keeping up with the Chrysler Hemi powered cars. They weren't just off a tenth, they were now almost off the Hemis’ pace by almost a half second. Just qualifying with a Chevy in nitro Funny Car was something to be proud of. Mike did not run well and failed to qualify at the Winter meets. He did better on March 15 at Dallas for its season opener. Ten FCs ran and all ran three races. Burkhart beat Bernie Williams in his first race. The two ran again in round two with the same outcome: Mike ran 8.03 over Bernie's 8.25. He made it three straight with a 7.91/184.80 over the Mustang's 7.95. He and Kelly Chadwick were considered the co-winners as both had won all three of their races. He also ran well at Miami-Hollywood later in the month for an eight-car show. An opening round 7.62/187.58 beat Ronnie Hunter's 7.90/190 and in the semifinals, he stopped Bobby Rowe in the "Super Duster" with a 7.78/193.29 to the Duster's 7.89/195. This was an unusual final, as it featured two Chevy powered cars. That was rare in '70 with all the strong Mopars. He faced Clare Sanders driving the "Super Camaro" and his 7.82/190.00 finished runner-up to Clare's 7.65/192. Also ran 6.22 at Southeastern Dragway Dallas, GA (900 feet).

Notes: Jacono's first flopper was an SOHC powered former Tasca Mustang in 1970 which burned up in his driveway before it had a chance to be sorted out. 7.44/195 were the first full runs on the car. Joe drove Al Graeber's car at Maple Grove for one run in Jul-70. Bought Mazmanian car later in 1970.

Notes: Dale had a bit of bad luck at OCIR on May 2 for the Big Four Championships. He was lined up against Don Hampton for his first-round race when the car caught fire. He got out OK and the fire was quickly put out, but he was out of competition for the day. He raced at the fourth AHRA Grand American at Frontier International Raceway where he qualified with an 8.03. A first-round 7.93/188.17 lost to John Dekker's 7.73/191. He was back at OCIR on May 30 for the Funny Car 500, but he fouled away a 7.74 in the first round, against Wendell Shipman. Dale won over an eight-car field at the Tom Ferraro benefit race at Irwindale on June 6. He beat Bob Smith in the first round, with a 7.85/184.80, and in the semifinals he ran an easy single. In the final, he set Low ET of the meet with a 7.73/187.50 to beat Hampton for the victory. At Lions on June 13 for the All-American series race, he qualified for the eight-car show and in round one, beat Smith's 7.95/163 in "Bad Bascomb's Ghost" with a 174.75. Unfortunately, his Challenger came up ailing in the semifinals and he could only coax a 10.01 out of it that lost to Gene Conway's 7.27/196. At the OCIR Anniversary Race on August 15, Dale won his first-round race with a 7.90/170.45, but the car burst into flames in the traps. The Challenger was extensively damaged, but Dale walked away with only slight shoulder burns.

Notes: Dyno Don's '68 Logghe car, cool Paul Shedlik paint. Don ran a 7.48 early in 1968 at Milan, but the car ended up being run by Frank. Dyno disliked blowers and started match racing his '65 AA/MP Mustang. Don disliked the FIRES that resulted from the exploding blown engines that burned many drivers. Gas Ronda's horrendous fire was enough for Dyno to get out of the funny cars ASAP.

Notes: Former Keaton Cougar with 392 power. Ran mid to low 7s. Leroy was at Irwindale for an eight-car show on April 4. A first-round 8.64/136.15 beat Andy Clary's out of shape 'Cuda. Unfortunately, he lost oil pressure in the semifinals and shut off, advancing Dave Beebe into the final. He returned to Irwindale on May 23 for the NHRA Division 7 race. In the opening round of eliminations, his 8.12/182.18 lost to eventual winner Mike Snively's 7.51/192. OCIR held its annual Funny Car 500 on May 30, and Leroy qualified for the sixteen-car field. A first-round 8.27/127.11 advanced when Jack Chrisman lost a blower belt. In round two, he ran 8.48/192.30 to get around Wendell Shipman's tire-smoking 8.69/172 pass. He picked it up to a 7.81/193.13 to beat Ray Alley's out-of-shape 7.90/191. In the final, he faced Snively in Jim Annin's Challenger. The Cougar broke, and Snively soloed for the victory. On June 13, he was at Lions for an All-American series race. He failed to qualify for the low eight Funny Car program, but Lions held a second eight-car field for the cars that failed to qualify. Leroy soloed to an 8.98/115.97 win in the first round when Don Cook's Corvette broke, but unfortunately, he also broke and could not run in the semifinals. Leroy was back at Irwindale for a sixteen-car show on July 17. He qualified #3 with a 7.88/173.74 and beat Larry Fullerton's 8.03 in the first round, with a 7.80, but the Cougar broke, and Fullerton got back in on the "break rule" in round two. On August 22, Leroy was at Lions for an eight-car show. In the opening round, he lost to Beebe, but he came back out for a consolation race against Johnny Wright. Johnny shut down in their race, and the "Wild Breed" won with a 7.43/189.07.

Notes: Gordon Mineo started the year by running at the Irwindale New Years' Race. He had failed to qualify for the sixteen car field but got into the show for John Mazmanian's broken 'Cuda. He singled in the first round when Warren Gunter's VW broke. In the second round, he lost to Clyde Morgan's Javelin (7.88/178.21) when he had handling problems. He attempted to qualify at the second OCIR All-Pro race at OCIR on January 18, but he failed to make the eight-car field. At the AHRA Winternationals, both he and Tom McEwen ran 8.40 in round one, but Tom won. On February 15 at an eight-car show at Irwindale, he qualified fourth with a 7.74 and ran a first-round 7.97/184.04 over Marv Eldridge (8.07/182.18), but Danny Ongais at 7.52/195.94 in the MT Mustang beat his off pace 9.40-87.87 in the semis. At a match against Paula Murphy in April at Cecil County, Mineo ran 7.89, 7.77, and 7.60 to win all three races. Paula had transmission problems and couldn't get out of the 13-second range. On May 31 in Connecticut, Mineo ran a first-round 8.11/173.74 but lost with an 8.01/157.34 to Jim Liberman's 7.55/188.67 in the second round. On July 25 at the Sunset Drag Strip's sixth annual Funny Car Nationals, he ran a first-round 5.43 on the eighth-mile track over Al Hanna's Charger. A second-round 5.30 beat Paula Murphy (5.60), but Kelly Chadwick's 5.05 beat Mineo in the semifinal. - Ron Howard

Notes: Ran 7.84 at Rock. Mike Gagnon information. | Bob debuted a new Challenger in May at the AHRA Kansas State Championships. Unfortunately, he had a supercharger explosion that ripped the fiberglass body in half. He was not hurt.

Notes: Ran 7.46 at OCIR. | Bob was at Irwindale for the Gold Cup Championships on August 1. He got to the final round, but had a bit of luck along the way. It was a sixteen-car show and in the first round, he ran 7.86/181.80 to get around a tire smoking Jr. Brogdon. In round two, his 8.01/185.56 lost to Dick Poll's 7.91/190, but Poll broke and McFarland got back in on the "break rule." In the semifinals, he faced Gene Conway, but Gene's Corvette caught fire so Bob advanced to the final with an easy 8.55/168.22. There his luck changed as he blew an engine and Dave Beebe soloed for the win with an 8.05/176. On August 15, he was at OCIR for its Anniversary Race. Once again it was a sixteen-car field. In the first round, a 7.90/169.81 got past Jack Chrisman's ailing Mustang at 8.16/151. In round two, his 7.87/176.47 lost to Conway's 7.33/194. Bob was back at OCIR on August 29 for an eight-car show. He failed to qualify, but got in as an alternate. It didn't do him much good, however, as a first-round 8.06/192.71 lost to Conway's 7.03/204. At Irwindale's Labor Day Championships, his 7.71/184.04 in the first round, lost to eventual winner Mike Snively who ran 7.33/201 to win. Lions held its Anniversary Race near the end of September. McFarland qualified for the eight-car show, but he lost fire on the line in the first round, against eventual winner Beebe in the "Dodge Fever" car.

Notes: Dick Harrell was known as Mr. Chevrolet, sticking with the brand long after the rest of the top Chevy-bodied teams had gone to 426 elephant power. From www.dickharrell.com: "Dick even entered a full season of competition knowing he couldn't win any big meets when he stuck with Chevrolet power in 1970 simply because he felt his fans expected him to remain loyal." The popular racer was forced to switch to a Hemi in 1971 to remain competitive, but his fan base did not abandon him. - RT | Dick's new Camaro for '70 was 300 lbs. lighter than his '69 car. The body alone was 100 lbs. lighter, and it only weighed 1,980 lbs. He continued to run the Chevy engine. The heads were from Mondello and used 2.20-inch intakes and 1.90 exhaust valves. He used Venolia pistons and Howard's rods as well as camshaft. A Cragar manifold rested a Don Hampton-built blower that was overdriven between 24 to 27%. At high altitude tracks, it went as high as 34%. An Enderle injection was used up top. Dick used a B&M-built Turbohydro automatic transmission, and it was claimed to be able to last between 70-80 runs. He had used a Pontiac rear end in his '69 car, but for '70, he switched to a Mopar unit with 3.90 gears. On May 17, he was at Frontier International for the fourth AHRA Grand American race. He blew a transmission during qualifying and had to swap out a new one. But after all that work, the car's ailing 8.23/176.12 in the opening round loss to Jay Howell's 7.82/170. His next stop was at Detroit for the next AHRA Grand American. Unfortunately, he also lost early there. Harrell ran pretty well at Bristol for the AHRA Springnationals. His first-round 7.60/176.41 advanced when Tommy Smith broke. In the second round, his 7.64/176.47 upset Tom McEwen's 7.79/171. He was to face Fritz Callier in the semifinals, but the Camaro lost fire, and Dick could only watch as Callier soloed into the final with a 9.10. LaPlace held a Top Fuel vs. Funny Car race that saw the FC's get a half-second handicap. In the first round, he ran 7.69 to beat a fouling Richard Tharp. Dick lost a transmission in his second race and slowed to a 12.10 while losing to Ronnie Martin's 7.22. In the last race, a troubled 10.55 lost to Preston Davis' 7.09. Harrell raced at Green Valley Raceway for AHRA's Labor Day Weekend race. He beat Art Ward in the first round, with a 7.73, and a 7.70 in the second round beat Bill Rogers. In the semifinals, he came up against Jake Johnston, driving the "Blue Max." Dick tried hard, but his 7.58/192.70 was no match for Jake's 7.07/191.
