Notes: Replaced converted 69 flip top Corvette gasser which was sold to George Kirby in 1971 who resumed its operation as a blown gasser. The Challenger was a legitimate flopper that ran in late 70, but was burned to the ground. It was replaced in 1971 with a Camaro featuring a horrid paint scheme depicting a black widow with the Isky logo adorning its abdomen. This car too burned up, but Lombardo suffered severe burns prompting a temporary surrendering of driving chores to Steve Plueger. | John was at Irwindale on July 17 for a sixteen-car show (but only 14 cars showed). He qualified #12 with an easy 8.46/160.42. A first-round 7.77 beat Dave Condit's 8.20 in the "L. A. Hooker" and in round two he got around Larry Fullerton's Maverick. Unfortunately, John's Challenger broke and was unable to run in the semifinals. A week later (July 25), he was at OCIR for the PDA Championships. Once again he worked his way into the semifinals before breakage took him out. A first-round 7.50/169.81 advanced when Barry Kelly fouled against him. In round two, Ed McCulloch also fouled against him, throwing away a 7.26/193. But in the semifinals, Lombardo lost a transmission against Condit. He was at the OCIR Anniversary Race on August 15, but his first-round 7.57/192.30 lost to Arnie Behling's 7.19/208 in John Mazmanian's 'Cuda.

Notes: Photo from 1970 Spring Nationals at New York National Speedway, Long Island. - RT | Malcolm was at York's US 30 on April 5 for an eight-car show. All cars were to make two runs with the two lowest ETs meeting in the final. Durham broke after doing his burnout in his first race against Jim Barillaro. In his second race, he beat Arnie Beswick with a 7.60/192.30 (Top Speed) that qualified him for the final. In the final, he met Bruce Larson who had run a best of 7.71 (twice). It was a good final, but Larson set Low ET in winning with a 7.56/189 that beat the "Strip Blazer's" close 7.64/191.89. He was at Rockingham for the AHRA Pro-Am Championships where in the first round, both he and Don Prudhomme ran 7.65, but Malcolm took the win. He lost to Jay Howell in the second round.

Notes: At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, Steve qualified on the "bump spot" of the sixteen-car field with a 7.743/191.48. That was pretty impressive, considering the cars that had failed to qualify included Don Prudhomme, Don Schumacher, Leroy Goldstein, Pat Minick, and others. He lost to Leonard Hughes in the first round. On March 14, he was at OCIR for an eight-car show. He advanced past the first round with a 7.95/185.56, but he blew an engine in the semifinals and lost to eventual winner Danny Ongais in Mickey Thompson's Mustang. He had more engine woes at the final OCIR All-Pro event on March 28. He lost one engine in qualifying for the sixteen-car field and another in the first round while losing to Bob Pickett. By '70, things started to take a turn for the worse for the talented driver. He lived in Newport Beach, California, and his winnings were light compared to his expenses. The rumors started to go around about some sketchy dealings. Bob was a DNQ at the Ontario World Finals (times not reported). He also ran 7.89 at Deer Park.

Notes: Hampton had notoriety in the mid-60s with twin-engined side by side AA/Comp dragster. Basically relied on his experience in building a similar rig powered by twin blown alky LT-I 350s. The car ran mid 7s. Hampton was 1970 NHRA Winternationals Top Gas champ, too. | Don ran this car at the final OCIR All-Pro race on March 28. He beat Ron Goodsell's quicker 7.72/190 in the first round, with a 7.89/193.50. In the second round, he singled with a 7.90/192.71 when Ray Alley was shut off on the line with problems. In the semifinals against Dave Beebe, he fouled away a 7.96/194.54. On April 4, he raced at Irwindale for an eight-car show. Beebe's 7.76/190 stopped him in the first round. He was back at OCIR in April for the Corvette Funny Car Championships where he set Top Speed at 191.89, but failed to make it to the finals. On May 2, OCIR held their Big Four Championships. It was supposed to be a 32 car field, but only 28 cars showed. Don got past the first-round when Dale Armstrong's car caught fire. In the second round, an 8.41/190.67 beat Ed Carter's 8.92/139. He lost to Gene Conway's 8.13/153 in the third round with an off pace 9.05/113.49. He lost to Vic Morse's 7.72/197 in the first round, at the OCIR Funny Car 500 on May 30. His 7.99/189.87 wasn't enough to get around the other Corvette. Irwindale held a Tom Ferraro Benefit race on June 6. Don ran a first-round 7.98/190.66 to get past a fouling Dick Poll. In the semifinal of the eight-car show, he beat Gary Densham's out of shape 8.19/180 with a 7.96/190.66. A final round 7.99/190.26 lost to Armstrong's 7.73/187. At the OCIR Nitro Championships on July 3, Hampton got out of shape and crossed the center line in the first round, and lost to Leroy Hales' 7.95/188. He did the same thing in the very first-round the next day at the Irwindale Fourth of July Championships. This time, he gave Ray Alley a free ride into the second round.

Notes: On May 23, Dick was at Irwindale for the NHRA Division 7 race. It was an eight-car show and in the first round, his 8.02/186.32 lost to Ray Alley's 8.00/185. Poll ran this car at the OCIR Funny Car 500 on May 30. He beat a sleepy Mert Littlefield (7.70/181) in the first round, with a 7.97/190.67. In round two, a 7.82/188.67 beat a tire-smoking Vic Morse. In the semifinal, his 7.94/174.08 fell to eventual winner Mike Snively's 7.51/188. On June 6, he was at Irwindale for the Tom Ferraro Benefit race. He fouled in the first round, against Don Hampton. A week later, on June 13, he was at Lions for the All-American Series race. He failed to qualify for the low eight, but Lions held a second Funny Car show for the non-qualifiers. Dick beat Jack Chrisman's 7.88/163 with a 7.63/190.27. Since his 7.63 was Low ET of the first-round, he got a solo into the final with a 9.55/159.29. In the final he ran Chrisman again who was reinstated when Leroy Hales broke. But in the all-Mustang final, Poll's car broke, giving Chrisman the win. In July, Irwindale held a 16-car show, but only 14 FC's showed up. Qualifying was easy so Dick ran an 8.90/112.21 for the #14 spot. He advanced past the first-round when Don Cook's Corvette broke. In the second round, a 7.94 beat Morse's 7.97. Unfortunately, he hurt the engine and was unable to return for the semifinals and Vic was reinstated. At the Irwindale Gold Cup Championships on August 1, he beat Chrisman in the first round, with an 8.26/180.72. A second round 7.91/190.66 beat Bob McFarland, but in the semifinal, an out of shape 8.05/160.70 lost to Dave Beebe's 7.56/176.

Notes: Clare had nothing but problems went he showed up at Miami-Hollywood on February 22 for a best-of-three-match race against Bobby Rowe in the "Super Duster." Not only did Sanders lose all three races, but his best pass was also only a 9.02/95.54 shut-off run. His first run was an out-of-shape 9.29/167.91, while his last was another bad handling 12.51/144.00. Rowe won the match with a 7.46 best. In mid-May, he was at Capitol Raceway for its Mr. Chevrolet race. Ten cars ran the first round, and his 7.96/187.88 advanced when Bruce Larson fouled. In round two, his off-pace 8.60/190.26 lost to eventual winner Kelly Chadwick's 7.67/182. Photo from Minnesota Dragways, summer 1970.

Notes: Fred was a regular on the Coca-Cola Cavalcade Funny Car Circuit. On June 28, a Cavalcade race was run at Suffolk, Virginia. Goeske made in into the final by running 7.61 over a fouling Jess Tyree and in the next round, Cliff Zink, who was driving the "Stone, Woods and Cook" Mustang, fouled against him. Fred was lucky in that race as his transmission had gone away. He faced Kelly Chadwick in the final. Fred pulled to the line with the ailing transmission still in the car, hoping that Chadwick would foul. He didn't and Fred had to settle for the runner-up spot.

Notes: Art was the second alternate at the NHRA Springnationals in Dallas in June (times unavailable). He was at Castle Rock, Colorado, on July 26 for its Rocky Mountain Funny Car Championships. It was a sixteen-car field, and in the opening round, his 7.94 beat the "Flying Dutchman." In the second round, an 8.05 defeated the "Jokerest Brothers." A 7.90/170.45 beat Ronnie Runyan's Chevy-powered Corvair in the semifinal. He faced Dick Custy in the final, and Dick was running two-tenths quicker in eliminations. Not sure what happened, but Art's 8.47/110.29 got the victory over Custy's 8.00 (redlight?). Art qualified #4 at 7.256 at the NHRA Dallas World Finals. He beat Eldon Huffman in round one, 7.22/188 to 8.00, and in round two, he topped Larry Reyes, 7.22 to 7.26. Ed McCulloch ended Art's day in the semifinals, 6.94/212 to 8.20. The two Dallas events were Art's only NHRA national events of the year.

Notes: Bernstein drove the car at San Antonio, Texas, early in January for a four-car show. His race ended prematurely when the car broke a rear-end before his first race against Kelly Chadwick. Kenny was at OCIR for the Big Four Championships on May 2. It was supposed to be a 32 car show, but only 28 cars showed. Bernstein ran 7.98/182.55 to beat Mert Littlefield's much quicker 7.71/175 in the first round. Unfortunately, he lost to Ray Alley's 'Cuda in round two. He was at Oklahoma on July 4 for a best-of-three-match race against Don Biggers. Kenny won all three races to win the match, running a best of 7.77/170.77. On Labor Day Weekend, Kenny was at Green Valley Raceway for an AHRA race. He slept on the line in the first round and lost to the only unblown car in the show, Terry Pringle in Gene Snow's injected car. Kenny qualified #16 at NHRA Dallas Springs at 7.801/187.50. He took an easy 9-second win in round one when Tom McEwen broke but had troubles himself in round two and his 13-second run last to Leonard Hughes. Sister car to Alley's Cuda in 70. Featured in Hot Rod. Kenny ran 7.71 at NHRA Dallas. Where was the 7.69 run?

Notes: Higginbotham qualified Mike Burkhart's Nova at the AHRA Winternationals, which was quite an accomplishment considering 52 cars attempted to make the sixteen-car show. But in the first round, he fouled against eventual winner Tommy Grove. Mart was at Rockingham for the AHRA Pro-Am Championships where he won his first-round race, but lost fire while making his burnout to face Don Prudhomme in round two. At the next AHRA Grand American race held at Frontier International, he beat Tom McEwen's 7.92/189 in the first round, with a 7.70/187.07. An off pace 8.12/178.21 lost to Leroy Goldstein's 7.49/173 in the second round. He lost in the semifinals, shutting off to a 9.40/101.23 at the AHRA Grandnationals at Detroit on May 26. It was getting tougher and tougher to win running a Chevy-powered car on Nitro against the Hemis, but Mart proved that it could still be done when he won over a six car field at LaPlace. A first-round 7.62/177.51 beat Don Gay's 7.73/191. In his second race, he had a really tough customer: Leonard Hughes in the "Candies and Hughes" 'Cuda. Mart was up to the task, running 7.53/185.56 to beat Hughes' 7.59/193. He got a gift in his third race when Don Biggers fouled and Higginbotham won with an easy 8.09/129.49. Early in June he was at Bristol for the AHRA Springnationals. A first-round 7.87 lost to another Chevy-powered car, Curtis Wasson's Camaro at 7.81. He was runner-up to Gene Snow at the third NHRA Division 4 race. Mart's times weren't very impressive, but he made it to the final after beating Ezra Boggs with an 8.36, and a fouling David Ray with an 8.04. In the final, he broke while Snow singled to the victory. On August 2, he showed up at New England for the AHRA Grand American with a Hemi-powered Nova. MPH from Frontier
