Notes: Clyde started the season at the Irwindale New Year's Day Race. A 7.55 qualified him fourth, and a sideways 8.05 beat Gene Conway's 8.25 in the first round. Gordon Mineo got out of shape against him in the second round, and his 7.88/178.21 advanced. In the semifinal, Don Hampton fouled, giving Morgan a free ride into the finals. Johnny Wright's 7.84/189 in Mickey Thompson's white Mustang beat Clyde's close 7.92/186.72. He then went to OCIR for the first All-Pro race on Jan 4. Conway turned the tables on Morgan by beating him in the first round. He attempted to qualify for the second All-Pro race held on the 18th, but he could not better the 7.57 "bump" it took to join the eight-car field. Another first-round loss came at Irwindale on January 26 when Ken Safford's 7.58/197 in the Mr. Norm Charger beat the Javelin's 8.06/146.57. Safford had Morgan's number when he again defeated him in the first round on February 15 at an eight-car show at Irwindale. Morgan qualified fifth with a 7.85 and ran a first-round 7.86/185.18 that lost to Ken's 7.56/188. On February 22, at the third OCIR All-Pro event, Clyde singled in the first round when Mike Snively's car failed to fire. Unfortunately, Clyde fouled away a 7.56 against Jake Johnston, who set Low ET with a 7.26 in the semifinal. |

Notes: Chrisman was one of the Funny Car pioneers. His '64 Comet was the first of its kind (Dodge Chargers aside). The car inspired the Funny Car class more than any other. He was constantly pushing the envelope, going faster and faster. He had stunned the drag racing world in '67 by running 7.60/191.08 at Indy. So it was sad to see this great driver run so poorly in '70. The car was always (and I mean always!) prone to breakage. His times were way off what they had been even two years earlier. Jack Chrisman had been the Coca-Cola Cavalcade of Stars captain in '69. He withdrew from the Coca-Cola tour for '70. On May 9th, he was at Irwindale for an eight-car show. In the opening round of eliminations, his 8.19/173.41 lost to eventual winner Wendell Shipman who was driving John Mazmanian's car. Jack was at Lions on June 27 for an eight-car show. Unfortunately, he broke on the line against Dave Beebe in the first round. He also broke on the line in the first round at the OCIR Nitro Championships held on July 3. Eventual winner Arnie Behling advanced when the Mustang broke. The following day he was at Irwindale's Fourth of July race. Chrisman qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 7.88, but once again, the car came up ailing in the first round, and he lost to Dean LaPole's 8.50. He went to Lions on July 11 for the AHRA All-American race. He failed to qualify for the eight-car field, but there were so many FCs on hand that they created a second eight to run against each other. In the first round of this "second eight," Jack's 8.19/145.16 beat Bob McFarland's quicker 8.11/176. But in the semifinals, breakage persisted, and he slowed to 11.79/72.23 in a loss to Eldridge's 8.38/133. The following week (July 17), he was at Irwindale for a sixteen-car show. He qualified #13 with an 8.75, and his ailing 8.59 in the opening round of eliminations lost to Dave Beebe's 8.02. Jack was back at OCIR on July 25 for the PDA Championships. This was another sixteen-car show, and his 8.19/170.13 advanced when his opponent, Vic Morse, broke. But it was the same old story in round two when the Mustang broke against Dave Condit. Jack raced at Irwindale's Gold Cup Championships held on August 1st. In the first round, Chrisman's ailing 8.69/118.42 lost to Dick Poll's 8.26/180. Jack was at Lions on August 22 for an "open" eight-car show. He failed to qualify, but he had a "grudge race" with another non-qualifier, Marv Eldridge. Jack won their race, with his 7.54/185.56 being one of his better runs of the year. Eldridge lost with a 7.70/168. The Fremont Argus Newspaper in June 1970 noted that Jack's car had an overhead cam Ford. |

Notes: NHRA outlawed these topless Corvettes. That didn't keep them from running non-NHRA sanctioned events. Wright was at Lions on August 22 for an eight-car show. He failed to qualify but came out for a consolation race against Leroy Hales in the "Wild Breed." It wasn't much of a race between the two as Wright shut down to a 9.82 that lost to Hales' 7.43. The following week (August 29), he was at OCIR for another eight-car show. Once again, he failed to qualify, but he got in as an alternate. Unfortunately, he lost to Don Schumacher's 6.93/210 in the opening round. Johnny qualified for the eight-car field at Irwindale on September 12. In the opening round, his 8.15/183.66 fell to Frank Rupert's 7.97/153. Mike Gagnon information. |

Notes: Car was campaigned throughout the 1970 season. Team burned the body off at Rockford, IL, and replaced the body with a Camaro to finish the season. Solano & Van Sant Invader Cuda was a different car. | This car came to an end, as mentioned, at the Rockford Manufacturer's Meet. All cars at the meet were to make three runs with the two quickest cars meeting in the final. Gary had been running strong as in the first race he fouled against Don Schumacher's 7.73, but the Corvette still ran 7.53. In the second race, he lost to Sidney Foster's holeshot aided 7.57 with a 7.49. The third race was the unfortunate one. Gary ran a 7.28 to beat a fouling Pat Minick in the "Chi-Town Hustler", but in the lights something blew as the car turned into an instant inferno. Scow got the car stopped and every fire extinguisher in the area was used up battling the blaze. The "Invader's" Corvette body was destroyed, but the chassis was salvageable. Gary was OK and his run ended the race as no more runs could be made as there was no fire equipment left at the track! |

Notes: Al was at Maple Grove on April 12 as a backup car for a best of three match race between Bill Flynn and Al Hanna in the "Eastern Raider." Hanna blew his engine in the first race and was unable to continue. Phillips filled in. In the next race, Flynn won with an 8.00/185 over Earl's 8.07/174.43. In the final race, the "Baltimore Bandit's" 8.33/173.41 lost to the "Yankee Peddler's" 7.71/186. Earl won the NHRA Funny Car circuit race held at Cayuga, Ontario, on July 5. A first-round 8.17/175 advanced when Huston Platt blew his engine on the line. He actually lost to Bill Flynn in the semifinal, but Flynn broke on the line in the final, and Earl was there to take his place. He faced Mel Perry, and Phillips ran 7.92/183 for the victory over Mel's 8.20/178. Mike Gagnon information. |

Notes: Susman was at LaPlace in April for its Spring Drag Festival. Four FCs were scheduled to run, but Arnie Behling failed to show, so only three ran. Marc faced Don Prudhomme in his first race, and the Nova broke. He was having nothing but problems as in the second race; the car broke again against Leonard Hughes. In Mid-May, Marc was at Marion, South Dakota, for a best-of-three-match race against Pat Minick in the "Chi-Town Hustler." Susman lost all three races to Minick. He tested the Hemi powerplant for Liberman. |

Notes: Huston ran at NHRA Dallas World Finals, but the note we have is that he was subbing for Division 2 champ Tommy Smith, whose car had burned. Huston qualified #10 at 7.66 and ran 7.62 in round one, to take out a centerline crossing John Dekker. Gene Snow defeated Huston in round two, 7.21/205 to 7.61/180.00. We will place those times here based on the NHRA note about Smith's burned Dart. Please confirm if you know this story. This was the car involved in the infamous Yellow River accident. |

Notes: Charlie was still running the Dart on Jan 4 when he showed up at OCIR for the first All-Pro race. In the first round, he beat alternate Don Schumacher who broke a driveshaft with a 7.49/175.09. In the semifinals, he advanced with a 7.45/175.43 when Dave Beebe broke in the "Dodge Fever" car. Unfortunately, in the final against Gene Conway, Allen's transmission let go. |

Notes: After Ford pulled the plug on its racing support early in '70, the Ford racers were forced to "go it alone" for the season. Up until the axing of its racing operations, Ford was still doing well in drag racing. But this was a severe blow as Ford had asked Kalitta to sort out its Boss 429 for fuel racing. The car was not responding well with the 429, and at numerous races, he reverted to the 427 SOHC to stay competitive. Parts for that engine were now scarce, so after Ford bailed, he switched to a 426 Hemi to power his TF dragster and the Mustang FC. In one of its earliest outings with the Hemi, Kalitta was at New York National Speedway in mid-May for its Springnationals. His 8.59 beat Arnold Arnold in the "Super Cuda," which had transmission trouble in the first round. Rain disrupted the race, and in between, they kept trying to run it until finally completing it on Sunday, May 24. Conrad did not reach the final; he had transmission problems himself, and his best pass was 7.92/179.09. Maple Grove held a sixteen-car show on Wednesday, August 12. Kalitta lost to eventual winner Leroy Goldstein in the second round. Conrad was at Tri-City in September for an eight-car show. He soloed in the first round with an 8.12/123.62 when the "Hawaiian" broke on the line. In the semifinals, his 7.43/173.74 beat Roger Lindamood. In the final, he faced Pat Minick in the "Chi-Town Hustler." Pat got the win when Kalitta lost a clutch to the line. We need confirmation of the listed 6.93. (See the other entry for the Boss 429 times). |

Notes: Mike Gagnon information. Woods was at Suffolk on July 20 for a best of three match race against Larry Reyes in the "Hawaiian." Unfortunately, Della lost three straight. In their first race, her 7.97/178.21 lost to Reyes' 7.65/181. She broke a rear end in the second race, and Reyes got the win. She could not return for the third race, so Larry soloed for the match race win. |

Notes: Adolph was at OCIR near the end of March for its final All-Pro race. It was a sixteen-car field, and he failed to qualify. He got in as an alternate, and his 8.03/177.16 beat Vic Morse in round one. In the second round, the car lost reverse after he did his burnout. Eventual winner Dave Beebe soloed for the win. Jim was back at OCIR for an eight-car show on April 18. He failed to qualify but got into the show when another car broke. The Firebird came to the line ailing in the first round, and could only run 15.25 in a loss to Beebe's 7.50. He was back at OCIR on May 2 for the Big Four Championships. In the first round, he broke and advanced Mike Van Sant. |
