Notes: Photo from Indy 1991. Won Southern Nationals at 21 years of age. As of 2016, still the youngest nitro funny car winner in NHRA history. Was the NHRA Rookie of the Year for 1991. Had a great season. Also painted as The Screamer this year.

Notes: Ed was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where his 5.48/272.14 qualified #7. He beat Mark Oswald in the first round, with a 5.50/274.55 and a second-round 5.45/273.63 beat Jim White's 5.50/272 in the "Hawaiian." But in the semifinals, his 5.41/273.22 lost to eventual winner John Force's 5.31/272. He qualified #3 with a 5.33/274.64 at the NHRA Arizona Nationals, and an opening-round 5.27/282.57 stopped Jim Murphy. But he smoked the tires in round two and lost to Del Worsham. He ran really well at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals. A 5.28/282.39 qualified #3, and he beat Gary Densham in round one. In round two, Mike Dunn's 5.46/251 lost to Ed's 5.30/278.29. He fell off to 5.40/276.32 in the semifinals, but it was still enough to beat Oswald. He faced Force in the final for the money. Unfortunately, McCulloch smoked the tires and shut off to 6.11/159.37 while John picked up the win with a 5.21/278. Ed continued to qualify well at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. There, a 5.29/272.06 got the #3 spot. He beat Gary Bolger in round one, with a 5.40/270.43, but he lost to Tom Hoover in the second round. Atlanta was the next stop on the NHRA tour for the Southern Nationals. Once again, Ed qualified #3, this time with a 5.31/276.24. He beat Freddie Neely in round one before smoking the tires and losing to White in round two. At Memphis, for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals, Ed slipped to #4 in qualifying with a 5.32/276.07. In the first round, Paula Martin lost an engine against him, and Ed advanced with a 5.54/256.70. A second round 5.52/267.77 beat Al Hofmann. But 5.5s were not going to get the job done, and, in the semifinal, Ed's 5.56/273.05 lost to Hoover's 5.48. The seventh race of the season was the NHRA Springnationals at Columbus. McCulloch returned to his #3 qualifying spot with a 5.34/272.06. He beat Murphy in round one, with a 5.48/271.73, but a round two 5.41/259.44 lost to Force's 5.35/267. He followed the tour to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, where he "only" qualified #7 with a 5.48/265.01. In the opening round, he beat Martin's 5.69/245 with a 5.57/258.69, but he lost to eventual winner White in round two. He then made a stop at Kansas City International for its Summernationals. Ed set Low ET there at 5.62, and he reached the final against Force. The two had a good race, but John's 5.68/261 beat Ed's late leaving 5.65/257.50. Back on the NHRA trail at Englishtown for the Summernationals. McCulloch ran 5.26/271.82 to qualify #4. He stopped Martin again in round one, with a 5.40/266.58. But a second-round 5.47/263.08 lost to Worsham's 5.34/272. Worsham would go on to win the race. McCulloch was way overdue for a win. It almost came at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 5.43. His speed on the run was 257.80. He beat rookie Len Seroka in round one, with a 5.82/252.31, and a second-round 5.55/256.19 beat Densham's 5.69/218. In the semifinals, his 5.59/257.14 trailered Hofmann at 5.76/253. This put Ed in his second NHRA final of the year. He faced Mike Dunn, who had been running just about a tenth quicker than Ed was throughout eliminations. Sure enough, Mike's 5.47/257 got the victory over Ed, who tried to make up the difference and fouled away a 5.54/255.82. Ed's best NHRA times were 5.237 from Maple Grove and the 282.57 from Phoenix.

Notes: Mike qualified #4 at Pomona with a 5.39/266.82. In the opening round, his 5.44/251.53 beat Tom Hoover's 5.51/269. He then beat Al Hofmann in round two with a 5.46/263.92. Low qualifier Glenn Mikres stopped him in the semi-final with a 5.28/284 to his 5.39/266.98. He qualified #5 at the NHRA Arizona Nationals with a 5.38/266.50. He beat Jerry Caminito in round one and got some "revenge" on Mikres in round two, where his 5.36/274 defeated Glenn's 5.35/280. But he lost in the semi-final, where another 5.36 at 263 fell to John Force's 5.30/270. The next stop was at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals. Mike's 5.33/270.51 qualified #6. He beat Hofmann in round one, and a 5.46/251.39 in round two lost to Ed McCulloch's 5.30/278. Shortly after that, he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 5.31/271.98 qualified #4. Gary Densham lost to his 5.36/261.62 in round one. In the second round, Dunn's 5.34/264.93 dropped Mikres' 5.49/266. He had a close race against Mark Oswald in the semi-final that saw both drivers run 5.38 (Dunn at 269.62), but eventual winner Oswald got the "win" light. The team then went to Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. It was just an eight-car field, and Mike qualified #3 with a 5.37/271.00. Oswald stopped him again, this time in round one, where Mike's 5.52/264.23 lost to Mark's 5.38/249. He was a little "off pace" at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. He "only" qualified #9 at 5.36/271.49. He beat Hofmann in round one before losing to Force in round two. He made up for it by winning the NHRA Mid-South Nationals held at Memphis in the first week of May. He had qualified #3 with a 5.31/273.97. A 5.35/269.86 beat Freddie Neely, followed by a 5.36/276.07 over Caminito's 5.59/258. In the semi-final, he defeated Jim White driving the "Hawaiian" with a 5.33. He faced Tom Hoover in the final, and Hoover had been running 5.4s. Mike picked up to a 5.30/275.31 in the final to claim the victory over Tom's 5.71/215. He then doubled it up by winning the NHRA Springnationals at Columbus. His 5.28/273.39 qualified second to White's 5.25/278. These two would work their way into the final together. Mike also won the Mile High Nationals this year. His best times were 5.225 at Maple Grove and 279.50 at Sonoma. Photo from the 1991 NHRA Springnationals, National Trail Raceway, Columbus, Ohio.

In the semifinals, she recorded another 5.88 at 247.25, but lost to the eventual winner John Force's 5.73/251. Paula bypassed the NHRA Springnationals, but she was at Martin, Michigan's US 131 track for its Funny Car Nationals. The race was run with eight-cars all making two passes and the two lowest ETs meeting in the final. Paula won her first race with an out of shape, shut off 9.08 that beat a fouling Jerry Caminito. In her second race, she ran a 6.08 that lost to Richard Hartman's 5.76. Her times failed to get her into the final. She did not go to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, but she was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A new career best of 5.45 at 259.14 qualified #13. Once again she lost to McCulloch in round one. She followed the NHRA tour to Denver for the Mile High Nationals where a 5.83/229.18 qualified #11. In the first round she had problems and shut off to a 7.45/117.18 that lost to Del Worsham's 5.55/255. At the end of July, Paula was at Sonoma for the NHRA California Nationals. A 5.52/254.45 qualified #11, but an off-pace 6.02/167.91 lost to McCulloch in the first round. A week later she was at Seattle for the NHRA Northwest Nationals. Once again she made the field; this time a 5.51/258.10 qualified #13. Martin lost early though, falling to Worsham in the first round. She again qualified #13 at the NHRA Northstar Nationals with a 5.65/249.51. In the first round both she and Al Hofmann smoked the tires and her 6.38/165.65 beat Al's 6.79/145. A 5.40/257 by Force in round two stopped her 5.58/251.46. At Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, she qualified. But it wasn't easy and she destroyed two superchargers trying to make the field. A 5.47/261.02 qualified #15 and she repeated that number in the first round, with a speed of 263.08, but she lost to Force's 5.32/274.

Notes: Who was the chassis builder, Pat Foster/Mike Bell or Tony Casarez? | Mineo had been out of racing for a few years, but early in '91, he purchased Raymond Beadle's entire Funny Car operation. This included the transporter and all the spare parts. He showed up at Atlanta in May for the NHRA Southern Nationals, but he failed to qualify, running a best of 5.95/245.27. Mineo qualified #9 at Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals with a career best 5.42/272.14. A 5.57/243.77 in the first round, lost to Al Hofmann's 5.32/268. He got a new best-ever ET in qualifying at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. There, he ran 5.32 at 271.49 to qualify #8. An off-pace 5.62/236.96 in the first round, lost to Gary Bolger's 5.38/253. He continued to run strong when he turned a 5.37/274.22 to qualify #7 at the NHRA Heartland Nationals. Mineo beat Richard Hartman in the first round, with a 5.38/268.17, but in the second round, he lost to the meet's eventual winner Mark Oswald, who ran 5.28/274 to beat Gordon's 5.48/237.09. He made his best showing of the year at the NHRA Chief Nationals. He qualified #12 with a 5.42/272.23. A first-round 5.40/267.69 beat a tire smoking Ed McCulloch and in round two, he beat John Force who also smoked the tires with a 5.36/271.08. In the semifinals, it was Mineo who overpowered the track and went up in smoke, losing to Jim White's 5.23/289 in the "Hawaiian." The NHRA season ended at Pomona for the World Finals and Gordon was disappointed when his best of 5.55/271.65 failed to qualify (third alternate). Best times were the Keystone 5.325 and the 274.22 at Topeka.

Notes: Photo from Indy 1991. Gary qualified #14 at the NHRA Gatornationals, but in the first round, his 5.64/238.85 lost to Ed McCulloch's 5.40/270. He then followed the NHRA tour to Atlanta for the Southern Nationals, where he qualified #13 with a 5.57/241.80. He lost to Tom Hoover in the first round. Memphis was NHRA's next stop for the Mid-South Nationals. Gary's 5.52/253.30 qualified #12 for the show. Unfortunately, Bolger lost to Al Hofmann in the first round. At the NHRA Springnationals, Gary qualified #15 with a 5.55/246.71. But his problems in the first round, continued as although he ran an improved 5.48/255.82, he lost to eventual winner Mike Dunn's 5.37/261. He stopped off at US 131 for an eight-car show run "Chicago-Style," with all eight cars making two runs with the two Low ET's meeting in the final. Gary smoked the tires in his first race against Hoover and slowed to an 8.81/92.24 loss. In his second race, a 5.68/258.15 (Top Speed) beat Pat Walsh and advanced him into the final against Hoover, who had run a 5.62 best. Hoover smoked the tires in the final, and Bolger got the victory with a 5.62/244.60. He did not follow the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals, but he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where he qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field with a 5.53/262.00. Another 5.53 at 261.24 in the first round, lost to low qualifier Jim White's 5.39/273 in the "Hawaiian." Bolger also bypassed the next three NHRA events before appearing at Brainerd for the NorthStar Nationals, where his 5.58/259.59 qualified #9. He finally got past the first-round when his 5.51/264.08 beat Freddie Neely. In the second round, he fouled away a career-best 5.44 at 263.00 against McCulloch, who advanced with a 5.43/264. He went to Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals, but his best of 5.72/218.87 failed to qualify. He then went to Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. There, a new best of 5.34 at 259.06 qualified #9. In the opening round, he beat Gordon Mineo's 5.62/236 with a strong 5.38/253.09. Unfortunately, he lost to eventual winner White in round two. Bolger also qualified for the NHRA Heartland Nationals, where his 5.48/258.99 held on to the #16 spot. He improved by a tenth in the first round, where his 5.38/265.09 lost to White's 5.20/286.

Notes: Jim started the year at Pomona, where he qualified #12 at 5.618/263.52. He improved to a great 5.464/255.60 in round one but lost to Al Hofmann's 5.36/270. His next event was Columbus, where Jim was a DNQ (19th best) with a 5.618/265.01 best effort in qualifying. He qualified #14 at Sonoma at 5.549/270.27 and lost in round one to Mark Oswald, 5.78/260 to 5.868/255.97. Jim qualified #12 in Seattle at 5.508/267.14 but broke against Mike Dunn in round one. That was Jim's last NHRA National event of the year. We are listing these times with the Quickor Daytona, but Jim may have raced John West's Metal Arrester Daytona at a few events. We need to confirm. Rick Howard photo from 1991 NHRA SpringNats.

The following week (August 4), he was in Seattle for the NHRA Northwest Nationals. A 5.53/258.02 qualified on the "bump." In the first round, he lost to low qualifier Jim White in the "Hawaiian." NHRA's next race was the Northstar Nationals at Brainerd. Wyatt's 5.66/260.86 qualified #14, and in the opening round, he lost to Mark Oswald driving the "Candies and Hughes" car. He attempted to qualify at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, and after running 5.59/265.01, he came back out for another qualifying attempt. Unfortunately, the blower exploded on this run, and the car turned into a fireball. Wyatt bailed out just before the fuel tank exploded. The car was burnt pretty bad. My favorite body and paint, although not downforce efficient. We burned the body off at Indy, replaced it with a Ford Probe to finish off the season. - Wyatt Radke

Notes: Photo from 1991 Norwalk. Did not run there as IHRA only ran TAFC's. Confirmed 5.620 at 263.23 in Atlanta 91. Where were the 5.569 at 265.95 run? | Bob attempted to qualify at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals, but his 5.74/253.59 best was good for third alternate. He did not attend any other NHRA races after that, in '91.

Notes: Ron qualified #11 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals at 5.582/261.70, but he lost to Chuck Etchells in the opening round of eliminations, 5.65/266 to 7.69/112. Ron qualified #15 at Phoenix with a 5.560/258.99. Jim White got him in round one, 5.25/278 to 5.529/258.84. Ron really stepped up at the Houston Fram Supernationals with a #7 qualifying 5.341/265.87. In round one, he beat Tom Hoover, 6.44/230 to 7.72/107, but broke against Mark Oswald in round two. Ron's next NHRA national event was Seattle, and he was the second alternate at 7.18/195. Ron again qualified nicely at the Winston World Finals in Pomona, ending up #13 with a 5.447/263.31. But Jim White got him again with a 5.30/289 to 6.56/148 win in round one. It was a nice year for the independent campaigner.

Notes: Photo from Indy 1991. | Frank was at Englishtown in July for the NHRA Summernationals. His 5.44/249.86 qualified #11. Unfortunately, he had problems and was unable to run in eliminations. The first alternate, Jerry Caminito, took his place in the field. He then went to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. There a 5.82/252.24 qualified #10. But he smoked the tires and shut off in the first round, losing to Whit Bazemore's 5.90. Kramberger had problems during qualifying at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. He blew a motor; oil got under the tires and smacked the wall. He was OK, and the damage was not too severe. He had earlier run 5.71/252.59, which was good for the fifth alternate. He qualified on the "bump" at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals with a 5.55/265.40. But he lost to eventual winner Jim White driving the "Hawaiian" in the opening round. Frank was the first alternate at Topeka for the NHRA Heartland Nationals with a 5.60/252.45. He made the show at the NHRA Chief Nationals, where his 5.53/264.86 held down the "bump.” But a first-round 5.82/190.83 lost to White's 5.28/286. He did not race at Pomona for the NHRA World Finals.

Notes: Gary started the season by qualifying #9 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He lost to Richard Hartman in the first round. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, he ran a career-best of 5.39 to qualify #7. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the first round, and lost. NHRA's third race of the year was the Supernationals at Houston. Densham qualified #14 and lost to Ed McCulloch in the first round. The story was much the same at the NHRA Gatornationals. There he qualified #13 and lost to Mike Dunn in the first round. A 5.52/243.32 qualified #12 at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Once again he lost in the first round; this time Mark Oswald got him. Things didn't go so well at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. Gary's best of 5.63/250.62 was good for the second alternate. His next stop was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A 5.48/249.65 qualified #12, but in the first round, his 5.59/245.23 lost to Al Hofmann's 5.55/270. Only thirteen cars went up to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals so qualifying wasn't so tough. Still, Gary ran 5.55/237.27 for the #9 spot. He lost to John Force in the first round. NHRA's next stop was at Englishtown for the Mopar Parts Nationals. Gary continued to do well in qualifying, running a 5.47/258.69 for the #14 spot, but he was still looking for his first-round win in competition. He didn't get it here as in the first round, his 5.56/248.61 lost to Force's 5.36/267. In the thin air of Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, Gary qualified #8 with a 5.63/239.61. He finally got his first-round win when his 5.66/241.67 beat Jerry Caminito. A 5.69/218.18 lost to McCulloch's 5.55/256 in round two. On July 28, NHRA held its California Nationals at Sonoma. Gary qualified #13 with a 5.54/255.75. He lost in the first round, to Force. At least losing in the first round, was better than not qualifying at Seattle for the NHRA Northwest Nationals. There he was the first alternate with a best of 5.56/245.70. It was back to his first-round rut at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. He qualified #9, running 5.55/251.53 for the spot, but a 5.58/254.23 in round one, lost to Jim White's 5.38/276 in the "Hawaiian." He was disappointed at Indianapolis when his 5.52/256.04 failed to qualify for the NHRA US Nationals (second alternate). If that wasn't bad enough, he also failed to make the field at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. Densham was the first alternate with a best of 5.56. He had a bit of luck on his side and got into the show when Whit Bazemore was unable to run. Gary improved to a 5.42/255.46 in the first round, but he still lost to Dunn's 5.30/274. He made the field easily at the NHRA Heartland Nationals where his 5.41/260.11 was #11 on the grid. But his first-round rut remained when he lost to Chuck Etchells' 5.39/267 with a 5.49/256.48. He got his second win light of the NHRA season at the Chief Nationals. He qualified #15 with a 5.51/256.84 and in the first round, Oswald lost a blower and Gary advanced with another 5.51 at 249.79. In round two, his 5.52/244.76 lost to Del Worsham's 5.34/279. Densham ended his '91 NHRA season in a bad way, by not qualifying at Pomona for the World Finals. His 5.53/258.10 best was the second alternate for the field. Photo from Indy 1991.
