This was his own race car, an injected 427 Chevy on gasoline, running A/Altered, Logghe Chassis, Fiberglass Fiat body with Al Bergler tin. Notes: On July 11, 1961, they set the Drag News Magazine 1320 National Record at Onondaga Dragway, 8.57 seconds at 183.67 mph. They backed those numbers up in that same year at the then, brand-new Martin, MI Dragway. This was on gasoline, and the record stood for over a year. Also 1961, they ventured to Cordova, Ill., winning the World Series of Drag Racing, and to Smithfield, TEx., where they were Top Eliminator runner-up to Don "Big Daddy" Garlits. |

Notes: Went with this car for over ten years. First aspirated car in the eights. A second car with independent suspension was built after Bill spent two years in super stock. Altered (first) won 80% of the races it competed in. Two and a half by three eighth wall tubing frame with loop roll bar and two supports in front. Logghe suicide straight tube front axle. Nine inch Ford with Big Bill built shortened axles. Seat hung from tabs on the roll bar. First engine was a 413 wedge dodge. Will's Fargo, right? Second engine, 426 wedge. Third engine, 482 wedge (1/2 inch stroker). All three used direct drive. Car ran 9.72 with half arm and held MPH record at 152.28. With Hemi and Torqueflite the car set the record at 9.05/157.65. Upset a lot of people! Reset same year, I think 1968 at Indianapolis at 9.04. Tried the new independent suspension car built with the help of a super Ford engineer. We were too far behind the curve to get back in the game, but it did win class at Indianapolis the very last time they had it. Outstanding part of my life with Bill Sr. and Jr., Bud Polhill, Harold Pim, Glen Brown and several others who were involved with the car(s). Lots of stories from this car! |

Notes: This 1969 Nova was the Jungle Jim funny car that Clare Sanders drove to the first Funny Car eliminator class win at the 1969 Winternationals. The car ran a best time of 8.68 at 153.84 mph at Maple Grove Dragway as The Red Baron B/A on 10/23/77. The car has been restored back to the original Jungle Jim funny car and is located at the World of Speed museum in Wilsonville, Oregon. Neal Hinkle is a 2015 inductee into the Drag Race Hall of Fame.com and 2016 Legion of Honor award recipient from the York US 30 Heritage Days at the Eastern Museum of Motor Racing. Neal is a 2017 inductee in the Pocono Drag Lodge Hall of Fame and Legend of PDL award recipient. | Don Hinkle, son of Neal Hinkle. Found by Norman Hechtkoff. Originally restored by Mike Guffey of IN.
