Notes: The Road Rebels Car Club of San Gabriel started up in 1952. Lots of their members raced at various drag strips throughout Southern California. This Crosley coupe (driver and owner unknown) began racing at San Gabriel in mid-1956 in B Open Gas. Its best showing in that class was 102.35 mph on June 10. It began racing in A Competition Coupe in September, still using the Merc engine. It garnered Top Eliminator at San Gabriel on Sep. 16, clocking 108.64 mph. Notes: When he was thirteen years old, he was relocated with his family in 1941 to the WWII Internment Camp at Gila River in Arizona. After spending three years in the camp, Jim enlisted in the Army and served in the 82nd Airborne Division in Fort Bragg, North Carolina. During his service, Jim was a parachutist and worked as a Line Man, running communication lines and earning the World War II Victory Medal. After his military service, he returned to the central California coast and worked in radiator repair shops. He was a founding member of the Santa Maria Dragons car club that formed in 1953. He first raced a '30 Ford coupe with a 239 ci motor at the Santa Maria airport strip in C Competition Coupe-Sedan in 1954. In 1958, he built a '32 Ford Bantam coupe with a Pontiac engine. Most of his racing in '58 was done on the Dragons' strip at the Santa Maria airport. At the airport strip, he took class wins on Jan. 5 (122.62 mph) and Mar. 2 (115.138 mph). On Oct. 5, he took top time, top eliminator, and a class win trophy. On Feb. 16, he ran with a Cad engine at San Luis Obispo, taking top eliminator with 119.10 mph. He passed away in 2020. Notes: In early July, at Chester Drag Strip, he turned 105.88 mph with his '57 Pontiac powered '27 T-Ford coupe. On Oct. 12 at Chester, he took top eliminator honors with 109.75 mph. Notes: Although owned by Hewitt, this red and white competition coupe was built by the members of the Wheelers car club of Medford. It had its first outing at Camp White on July 27, clocking 13.16 at 109.79 mph. Dropping down to a lower elevation for an NHRA regional meet at Redding, they set a national record of 121.58 mph. Hewitt finished out the season running just at Camp White. At the 2-day Northwest Gas Championships at Camp White, he took a class win with 12.50 at 113.20 mph. He finished the season with a Top Eliminator win at Camp White. At the close of the season, he decided to completely disassemble the car for the next season. Notes: They ran a '56 Chevy motor in the roadster for the 1958 season. It's unclear if they continued running on fuel or if they switched to gas because their times reflect a bit of a drop-off from 1957. They ran at Casa Grande on Apr. 13, winning in A/MR with a 117.34 mph clocking. On Apr. 20, they won the A/R class with a 113.25 mph speed. At Chandler on June 22, they won A/R with 120.32. Notes: At Saugus, he ran in the J Class with his Open Gas Roadster. That class was for cars that were 1927 or later with a full body. He blew his transmission at the Drag Racers, Inc. race on Feb. 6.
