Notes: Though dogged for several years in the mid-Sixties by the fuel roadster of Chicago's Dennison-Arlasky-Knox, Gabby Bleeker and his red (then black) Austin coupe pretty much carried the flag for Midwest fuel altered fans throughout the decade. Author Don Montgomery in "Those Wild Fuel Altereds" reports that Bleeker switched to fuel in 1961. - RT; On May 17 at Cordova, he set a strip record at 10.64 at 135.10 mph. Notes: The Road Rebels Car Club of San Gabriel started up in 1952. Lots of their members raced at various drag strips throughout Southern California. This Crosley coupe (driver and owner unknown) began racing at San Gabriel in mid-1956 in B Open Gas. Its best showing in that class was 102.35 mph on June 10. It began racing in A Competition Coupe in September, still using the Merc engine. It garnered Top Eliminator at San Gabriel on Sep. 16, clocking 108.64 mph. Notes: Gary Kohler owned Dynamic Speed Shop on Detroit's east side. This was his own race car, an injected 427 Chevy on gasoline, running A/Altered, Logghe Chassis, Fiberglass Fiat body with Al Bergler tin. This was a tough class in '68 - '70 and some of the competition included Neil Ellis (Mich.), Billy Kidd (Canada) and Larry Nolan (Tenn.). Gary was runnerup at Indy in '69. |

Notes: One bad car. Tom won Top Eliminator at Lions & Santa Ana with this car and drove it home. LaSalle transmission.; At Santa Ana, he ran in B/SR, but at Pomona, he ran in A/SR, mostly running on gas. On June 9 at Pomona, he set a strip record with 113.63 mph. At San Fernando, on June 30, he turned 115.53 mph running in the non-fendered fuel roadster TX class.
