Notes: Joanne's husband, Jack, was the manager of the new Chandler Associated Drag Strip. He wanted his wife to drive his '34 Ford A/R at Chandler in an attempt to become the fastest women drag racer in the country. The roadster was a record-holding car sporting twin McCulloch superchargers on a '57 Lincoln engine. On Sep. 28, she turned 12.77 at 125.44 mph, a speed that the track boasted made her the fastest woman drag racer at the time, which may, in fact, be true. It was her only time racing the roadster. Notes: In his Fiat altered, Grimes repeatedly upped his NHRA national record in A//A. On Mar. 2 at the Casa Grande Airport, Grimes set a new track record in A/C, a new class, clocking 120.32 mph. It was reported in the Arizona Republic (9/2/58) that Grimes did not compete in 1958, undoubtedly meaning that he had others do the driving for him. Lewis Rogers, who drove the car at the 1957 Nationals, was probably the driver in 1958. In April, the Arizona Republic (4/14/58) reported that Rogers was a partner in the car with Grimes. At the Drag News Open on June 8, 1958, at the Chandler Associated Drag Strip, Grimes reportedly installed a supercharger to be more competitive with Californian Glen Ward. In late 1958, Grimes got involved in an advisory role in a dragster built by Al Eshenbaugh and Buddy Free. Photo: Pomona Progress Bulletin, July 7, 1959 |

Notes: Bob Davis, just a teenager, built this modified roadster. He was joined in the endeavor by Herbert (first name not known). In its first outing at Colton, he turned 109.35 mph on Mar. 13. Drag News ((4/29/55) reported that he was running a Chrysler at Colton when he turned 116.00 mph. However, all other newspapers (and even Drag News on 5/13/55) said it was a Merc engine. He turned 114.00 mph at Colton on Apr. 24 and 112.00 mph at Pomona on May 8. No other reports of the car were found after his appearance at Pomona. Notes: Charles McCandless and Jack Hart ran this radical Bantam-bodied competition coupe with Doug Hartelt's Potvin-equipped blown Chrysler. The team had previously run both a Willys coupe and a '32 5-window coupe but switched to this lighter car for the NHRA '57 Nationals. At the Drag Racers, Inc. Gas Invitational Championships on Oct. 27, McCandless took top eliminator honors, but not without challenges. He took a class win in Modified Coupe with 11.57 at 121.46 mph. In the final round of top eliminator, he faced Jim Nelson in the Masters Dragliner, which had already notched the meet's top speed with 132.11 mph. Most thought the Dragliner would win easily, but when the flagman started the race, the dragster remained at the starting line while McCandless left him in the dust. Upon returning to the starting line, McCandless, in a show of good sportsmanship, said he was amenable to giving Nelson a second shot. The second run was identical, with McCandless making a good run and Nelson still sitting on the starting line. McCandless was the top eliminator. On Dec. 1 at Santa Ana, McCandless won the Modified Coupe class at 125.00 mph. Photo: "Early drag racing photos," p.50, in Jalopy Journal, The H.A.M.B. -- MB |

Notes: William E. Coburn made his living manufacturing and selling Coburn Glaze auto polish. At the urging of his teenage son, Glenn, he went to a drag race at Lions Drag Strip in late 1956 or early 1957. He was bitten by the bug to try racing himself. The following week, he took the family station wagon to Lions, loaded down with cases of his auto polish, to race. It was fun, but he saw that his car wasn't a world-beater. One night, he came home with a beat-up '34 Ford coupe tied behind his station wagon. He announced to the family that he was going to build a drag race car. The car was ready to race after many hours in the family garage. He built the engine with the block and heads from a '51 Chrysler with a '57 300-C crankshaft reworked to fit the block. He took his first win in A/CC at Lions on February 3, clocking 124.30 mph. His next class wins, in A/A coupe-sedan class, came on March 17 (109.345 mph), March 24 (117.95 mph), and April 7 (114.35 mph). On March 24, he had lost to Fritz Voigt in a round of top eliminator. On April 14, he set a new track record in A/CC with 118.26 mph. He was encouraged. But Coburn had some ideas about how he might improve the car and get further in eliminations. He had noticed that a lot of races were lost from missed shifts. He thought that using a torque converter transmission might improve his chances to win races. He wasn't the only one to use a torque converter, but it was somewhat unique. Research hasn't found the details of when he did what and when to the car in '57, but he may have tried out the torque converter idea on the Reed Brothers B/dragster before putting it into his coupe. On May 5, the Reed Brothers made some shake-down runs at Lions with the Chrysler engine and torque converter. They made three more appearances at Lions before Coburn took the engines back to install in his competition coupe. On May 19, the Reed Bros. -Coburn Glaze B/D got the meet's top speed at 130.05 mph. The following week, the B/D won top eliminator and top speed with 130.62 mph. The last time the B/D ran with Coburn's engine and torque converter was on June 2. It lost to Fred Waterworth in eliminations, with a losing 128.67 mph, but got the meet's top speed with 129.68 mph. It was probably during this interim, when Coburn's engine was lent to the Reed Brothers, that Bill Coburn made a lot of changes to the body of his '34 coupe. In his garage, he totally changed its look. He chopped it 5 1/2 inches, channeled it 11 inches, and ripped open the back, and took six inches out. It gave it an aggressive look, almost like it was moving even when it was just parked. The torque converter prevented the car from storming off the line; its top end speed was tremendous. And all who heard it run said it was really LOUD. On July 13 at Lions, he took another class win with 121.13 mph. They were knocked out of eliminations when they lost their main bearing. On September 28, they took a class win with 119.63 mph. That was followed up with two more wins in October. They got wins on October 12 (119.36 mph) and October 19 (119.84 mph). On October 27, they towed to San Gabriel, where they got a runner-up in top eliminator to Durfee Auto's A/R. They clocked 120 mph. They returned to Lions in November, where they got class wins on November 10 (119.04 mph), November 24 (12.10, 117.98 mph), and December 1 (12.05, 119.20 mph). In early 1958, they would add a McCulloch blower onto the big Chrysler engine. They would also change from the '34 Ford body to a '48 Fiat body. Notes: The Road Rebels Car Club of San Gabriel started up in 1952. Lots of their members raced at various drag strips throughout Southern California. This Crosley coupe (driver and owner unknown) began racing at San Gabriel in mid-1956 in B Open Gas. Its best showing in that class was 102.35 mph on June 10. It began racing in A Competition Coupe in September, still using the Merc engine. It garnered Top Eliminator at San Gabriel on Sep. 16, clocking 108.64 mph. It steadily improved and got its fastest speed on Oct. 7 with 115.65 mph. Photo: San Bernardino County Sun, July 13, 1956 - MB |
