Notes: When Gene Adams picked a driver to race his gas dragster after Leonard Harris was killed, he picked a good one-Tom McEwen. McEwen began the season with a TE victory at Lions on Jan. 8, turning 9.34 at 176.47 mph. They ran the car a few times in the first quarter of the year but retired the dragster on a good note at Lions on Mar. 13. McEwen waded through five rounds in Top Eliminator to come out on top with a win with best times of 8.97 and 169.49 mph. That was the final race for that car, but Adams went to work building something special. The new car was ready for the June 17 race at Lions. On just its second run during time trials, McEwen clocked an impressive 8.97 at 169.82 mph. He came out on top with a TE victory-first time out. That was repeated for much of the rest of the '61 season. The next week he took a TE win at 8.84 and 171.45 mph and, in addition, bested Don Prudhomme in a two-out-of-three match race. The next day, June 25, he took TE at San Fernando with 9.03 at 178.50 mph. Back at Lions on July 1, he took TE runner-up with 8.94 at 170.13 mph. A week after that, he returned to his winning ways at Lions with an 8.99 TE win on July 8. A week after, he got another TE victory at Lions with 8.81 at 173.41 mph. There didn't seem to be anything stopping him from extending the streak. When the Olds engine needed repair, they would swap it out for a blown Chevy motor, but that was infrequent. On Aug. 19 at Lions, he set a national ET record with 8.62 and 173.04 mph. He towed the car back to Indianapolis for the U.S. Nationals and took runner-up in the AA/D class to Pete Robinson, clocking 8.90 and 168.53 mph. Notes: In the first half of the '62 season, they ran on gas but switched over to fuel with great success in August. Safford started the '57 season with a top gas eliminator win at the March Meet at Bakersfield with best times of 8.78 and 177.61 mph. At Fremont on May 27, he beat Tom Trefethen to take the #5 Mr. Eliminator title for gas dragsters with 8.73 at 177.16 mph. On June 16 at Lions, he got the gas Top Eliminator victory with 9.04 at 165.44 mph. He repeated that Lions TE win a week later with 9.10 at 168.85 mph.
