Notes: The 1958 season saw the evolution of the iconic Hustler dragster of Chrisman & Cannon from an injected B/GD to a full-bodied A/FD, one of the most famous cars in drag race history. It ran on gas up through when it won the best-engineered car award at the NHRA Nationals at Oklahoma City in late August. They had the fully-enclosed aluminum body with the bullet-shaped front made in time for the March Meet at Bakersfield. It ran in the B/D class without a supercharger or front cowling when it won Top Eliminator at the Santa Ana Gold Cup race on Apr. 20, where it turned 10.76 at 140.97 mph. They had the new front-mounted supercharger on the car when it raced at Lions on June 7, improving their time to 10.28 at 147.29 mph. On June 14 at Lions, Cannon may have collected on his wager with Mickey Thompson as Art ran 152.80 mph in the course of winning Top Eliminator. They had trouble keeping the motor in one piece for several weeks, with a string of blown engines plaguing them in June and into July. But once they got those problems sorted out, they returned to their winning ways and good times (in more ways than one). They went through three rounds at the Nationals at Oklahoma City before getting beaten by Ted Cyr. At the Drag Racers, Inc. world championships at Riverside on Sep. 27, they ran the engine on fuel for the first time. They turned 9.61 at 157.72 mph on their first run on alcohol. In the first round of eliminations, Art beat Pete Ogden, who was driving Romeo Palamides' dragster with a 9.50 at 163.33 mph clocking. In round 2, he beat Hank Vincent's Top Banana with a 9.60 run. The 3rd round was his undoing when he added 20% nitro to the alcohol mix and blew the blower. A blown blower was their undoing at the race at Gardner Field in Taft in Central California, but not before setting a strip record on both ends with 9.39 at 163.33 mph. The year concluded with other uneventful outings, but there was the promise of more good things to come in 1959, including the appearance of a new car-Hustler II. Notes: This dragster never veered far from Colton's track, and they were a lock on either winning Top Eliminator or their class in the '60 season. They ran in January and February as the Adriance-Racer Brown gas dragster, but after that, news reports dropped the Racer Brown name from their name. They were just the Adriance Appliance Special. In their first outing of the season at Colton on January 24, they took a TE win and clocked an unbelievable 173.07 mph. To satisfy the doubters, Adriance used pump gas supplied by the strip. They never again topped 170 mph, but Colton accepted their 173.07 as the strip gas record for more than a year. LeChien said that his 173 run sure felt faster than usual. On February 14, they took a TE win and turned best times of 9.75 and 162.17 mph. On March 27, he ran 9.53 at 162.00 mph. On April 10, he got a TE victory with 159.85 mph. On one of their rare outings at another strip, they went to San Fernando on April 10 and turned 9.78 at 157.42 mph. On May 1, he took a Top Eliminator victory at San Fernando with 9.42 at 159.27 mph. In the latter part of the year, LeChien stopped driving for Adriance and went with another dragster. Research hasn't conclusively proved when that happened, but Lee Drake was Adriance's driver on November 27 at Colton when he turned 9.93 at 157.34 mph. Earlier, Adriance took a class win at Colton on August 6 with 161.79 mph. On September 5 at Colton, they ran 9.82 with a best speed of 152.80 mph. On September 10, the clocking at Colton was 10.19 at 152.06 mph. These slower times in late August and September could indicate LeChien wasn't driving those times. On Apr. 5 at Bakersfield, they won top gas eliminator with 149 mph but lost to Jack Chrisman driving the Spaghetti Benders A/FD in the top eliminator run.
