Notes: Rick was at Irwindale on May 18 for an eight-car show. He qualified last, but he made the best of it. A 7.77/184.04 in the first round, beat Walt Rhoades' 7.85/189. In the semifinals he improved to 7.74/187.50 to beat Jack Jones' quicker 7.60/194. This put him into the final against Rhoades who had gotten back in on the "break rule." Walt fouled and Rick eased to 9.85 for the victory. |

Notes: Hampton's Top Gas effort was a successful one during '68, usually making it into the late rounds of the meets he attended. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, Don qualified #5 in the sixteen-car show with a 7.82/175.78. In the first round the car came to the line ailing and the best he could do was an 8.27/178.92 that lost to Rick Tope. He was at the Irwindale Grand Prix on October 5 where he qualified #4 in the eight-car show with a 7.76. He won his first-round race with a 7.91/189.06 before losing to Bob Noice's 7.89/184 in the semifinal with a 7.93/187.50. He had another good outing on October 26 at Irwindale where he qualified #1 with a 7.75 in the sixteen-car show. A first-round 7.81/189.86 beat Don Tuttle and in round two, in a battle of the blower manufacturers, Larry Bowers fouled against him. Don got another free ride in the semifinal when Bob Muravez also fouled against him. But in the final, a good 7.77/189.96 lost to Jack Jones' 7.68/202. Hampton was back at Irwindale on December 8 for an eight-car show where he qualified #4 with a 7.86. Unfortunately, he slept in the first round, and his 7.75/189.46 lost to Phil Soares' 7.88/191. |

Notes: Bunker qualified his gas dragster in many TF shows, and he wasn't scared of the competition. At Wichita's Memorial Championships, his 7.76/192.30 qualified #4 for the TF field. He lost to eventual winner Wayne Griffith in round one. On May 30, he was at Pittsburg for its Memorial Day Championships. It was an eight-car TF show, and Jim's 7.93/182.54 qualified second behind John Wiebe's 7.89/170. He lost to Norm Gingrass in the opening round. Jim ran 7.952/196.06 at NHRA Indy. |
