In round two, he hurt his motor on an 8.44/131.57 run that advanced when Dick Padar shut off. He borrowed a motor for the semifinals, and it produced an 8.04/163.93 but lost to Kelly Brown's 8.03/185 in the "Diaz-Brown" car. Murphy was at Irwindale for an eight-car show on May 27, but his 8.13/178.92 in the opening round of eliminations lost to Bob Noice's 7.98/188. |

Notes: Employing a '57 Olds in a Chassis Research frame, Nielsen & Brown began having some success locally. On May 3 at the Salt Lake Airport No. 2 strip, they set a new record of 10.7 in B/D and copped top eliminator honors. They added a supercharger and upped the track record on Aug. 23 with 10.06 at 141.85 mph, again taking top eliminator. Notes: Ken Ellis wanted to build something different than he saw at the drag strip. One year and $3000 later, he debuted his three-wheeled dragster which he called Trigster, but that name really never caught on with the public. His first runs were at Colton, one of a couple of California strips that were experimenting running 3/16th-mile drag races. At the world's first 3/16th-mile championships at Colton on Aug. 6 he turned 9.13 at 117.03 mph. On Sep. 6 at Colton at another 3/16th-mile race he ran 9.53 at 118.56 mph. At a quarter-mile race at San Gabriel Valley on Oct. 3 he won Top Eliminator with 11.46 at 128.57 mph. Two weeks later at San Gabe he won C/D class with 10.70 at 128.93 mph. On Nov. 1 at Colton he won Top Eliminator. Despite being kind of different-looking, he enjoyed a measure of success. He raced in 1960, but mechanical problems plagued him.
