Notes: On the drawing boards for three years and in construction for six months, this dual-engined $8,000 dragster debuted at Lions with Fritz Voigt driving on June 21. Kenny Droesbeck from Norwalk, a partner with Paul Nicolini in the Sidewinder dragster, was a partner in the operation. Voigt and Mickey Thompson shared driving duties until they towed it back east with the intention of racing at the U.S. Nationals. En route, they stopped at Bonneville Salt Flats, where Thompson ran 294 mph, becoming the fastest living American driver. After Bonneville, they returned to California, never getting to the Nationals. His appetite whetted for land speed racing, Mickey returned to begin work on his 4-engine Challenger I. Before going to the Salt Flats, Mickey made some good runs in his dual-engine dragster. The day after the car's debut at Lions, Mickey drove at San Fernando on June 22, clocking 10.45 at 147.29 mph. On July 6 at Pomona, Mickey turned 9.80 at 146.10 mph. At San Gabriel Valley Drag Strip on July 20, Mickey got Top Eliminator, clocking best times of 10.04 and 144.92 mph. In September, he began work on Challenger I. Photo: Early Drag Racing Photos, Jalopy Journal, The H.A.M.B., p. 8 - MB |

Notes: Texas ET Record. Hill's dragster was a very light 1075 pounds. He attended the NHRA National Championships at Oklahoma City, but newspapers didn't report his results. But when he returned to Texas, he emerged with successive wins that marked him as a force to be reckoned with. At the Texas State Championships at Caddo Mills on Sep. 6-7, he was runner-up to Jack Moss's twin Chevy-engined dragster in the finals for the A/D class. His best time of the meet was an impressive 9.95 seconds. On Oct. 5 at Freeway Drag Strip in Houston, he took top eliminator with 135 mph. He also got low ET of the meet. He repeated his top eliminator victory at Freeway Drag Strip on Oct. 19. He also set a new track record for A gas dragsters with 9.93 at 139.75 mph. In the first round of top eliminator, he beat Rodney Singer's blown Cad-engined dragster with 9.96 at 138 mph. He beat Linn Huit's Chrysler dragster in the next round with 10.07 at 136.36 mph. With his record-setting run, he beat J. F. Threadgill's Olds-engined A/FD in the top eliminator finals. He took a top eliminator win for the third consecutive time at Freeway Drag Strip on Nov. 9. He also clocked an unofficial 9.82-second run. En route to his TE win, he beat Mackey & Veselka (134.93 mph), Singer & Canton's blown Cad dragster (10.24 at 139.75 mph), and the final against Harold Stiefel's Pontiac dragster (10.19 at 135.95 mph). Afterward, Hill asked permission to make a single run and tied the strip's gas dragster record with 145.39 mph. (Photo: "Early drag racing photos," p.53, Jalopy Journal, The H.A.M.B. - MB |

Notes: Del Nero and Patterson spent a few months building this dual-engine dragster, only to race it (as far as research could find) once-at the 2nd annual Smokers, Inc. - Drag Racers, Inc. World Championships at Bakersfield on Sep. 1/2 in A Open Gas. It won the A Gas Dragster class and Top Gas Eliminator. It ran two in-line Merc flathead engines. The front engine displaced 298 c.i., and the back motor was 268 c.i. They returned to their old single-engine set-up with an Olds engine a month later. Research could not find out why the twin-engine dragster had such a short life when it had been so successful at Bakersfield. - MB |

Notes: Lefty Mudersbach teamed up with Tom Grove of Anaheim and Chey Herbert to field an in-line injected Chevy motored twin-engined dragster in 1959. Lefty took it to Santa Ana on Jan. 13 for its first outing with just a single engine to road-test it. He turned 11.46 at 142.85 mph. Performing well, he took that engine out and dropped the second engine in to test it on Jan. 25, again at Santa Ana. It also did well, turning 11.30 at 141.75 mph. Its next outing was with both motors at Bakersfield on Feb. 1, where he took gas Top Eliminator with 9.83 at 153,84 mph. Two weeks later, he won the A/D class at Riverside with 9.51 at 155.46 mph. In March, he ran at Lions twice, clocking 9.50 at 152.80 mph on Mar. 8 and 9.66 at 155,97 mph. Tom Grove was still with Lefty on Mar. 29 when he ran 9.54 at 156.79 mph at San Fernando, but then Grove went his separate way to do his own thing. Lefty first had a run over 160 mph at San Gabriel on May 2 when he turned 161.29 mph. He also began getting faster, tuning 9.21 at San Fernando the very next week. It was that way the entire 1959 season, improving steadily each outing, wracking up wins, and improving his times at drag strips in the Southland, particularly at Lions, where he set a couple of Drag News 1320 records. Notes: Throughout the latter part of the 1959 season, newspapers touted this twin-engine dragster as the world's "fastest unsupercharged, carbureted gas dragster." From the beginning of the season to the end, they liked to point out that the dragster had twelve carburetors. At no time in 1959 did they run injectors on the Chevy engines. At the beginning of the season, the dragster was known as the Mudersbach-Groves-Herbert Cams Special. Tom Groves of Anaheim was an early partner in the endeavor, but by March, Groves was no longer a part of the dragster operation. They picked Santa Ana to do their maiden testing outings, opting to run each engine singly before putting both engines in the dragster for full-out competition. Their first outing was at Santa Ana on Jan. 13, running in B/D. They turned 11.41 at 142.85 mph on that first outing. Then a week later, on Jan. 25 at Santa Ana, they tested the other Chee motor and turned 11.30 at 141.74 mph. From then on, it was all systems go as a twin-engine, unblown, carbureted gas screamer. They debuted at Riverside on Feb. 15 and took top gas eliminator with 9.51 at 155.46 mph. At Lions on Mar. 8, they took Low ET of the meet with 9.50 and a speed of 152.80 mph. Returning to Lions on Mar. 15, they got Top Eliminator with 9.66 at 155.97 mph. Drag News had just started what would evolve into their 1320 Records program, initially calling it the Quarter Mile Acceleration Records. Their 155.97 mph run at Lions on Mar. 15 was good enough to give them the Top Speed record in that new program. On Apr. 26 at Lions, they turned 154.63 for the meet's Top Speed. San Gabriel Valley Drag Strip dropped their cubic inch limitations for dragsters which permitted twin-engine dragsters to compete on May 2. Mudersbach took advantage of that new policy and got Top Speed and Low ET of the meet at 9.42 at 161.29 mph. On May 9, he took the Top Eliminator at Lions with 9.46 at 160.14 mph. The next day he ran at San Fernando, getting the top time at 9.21 at 160.42 mph. On May 16 at San Gabriel, he took Top Eliminator at 9.40 at 158.73 mph. The next day at Riverside, he took top gas eliminator with 9.70 at 155.00 mph. Things were really clicking for Lefty, and the wins were piling up, but then, for some reason, racing halted for the Herbert Cam Special until September. Research could not determine why the dragster took an almost four-month "vacation." Lefty got a couple of driving jobs with other dragsters during this interim. They didn't compete again until late September. They returned to racing at Lions on Sep. 26 when they clocked 9.30 at 157 mph. They returned to Lions a week later, on Oct. 3, and took the Top Eliminator with 9.28 at 158.17 mph. They were back in the groove. The following week on Oct. 10, at Lions, they got the new Drag News 1320 record for elapsed time with 9.17 and turning 158.45. Lefty's pit crew of Myron Koza and Roger Crowe was given much credit. At Riverside on Oct. 18, they turned 9.52 at 155.70 mph. They returned to Lions and their winning ways as they got Top Eliminator on Oct. 17 with 9.39 at 158.45 mph. On Oct. 31 at Lions, they clocked 9.20 at 159.29 mph. A week later, on Nov. 7 at Lions, they turned 9.13 at 161.00 mph. On Nov. 15, they towed north to appear at Cotati, where they took top gas eliminator at 9.l14 at 161.40 mph. On Nov. 21, they were back at Lions, where they got another 9.13 clocking at 159.85 mph. On Nov. 28 at Lions, they ran 9.18 at 161.57 mph. The next day at Riverside, they wrapped up the year with a gas dragster win at 9.32 at 157.58 mph. Notes: "Jet Car" Bob Smith was severely burned in a gas dragster crash at Green Valley Raceway (Fort Worth, TEx.) in late August, as reported in the 8/27/68 Milwaukee Journal. Smith was a familiar name to Wisconsin drag racing fans, having crashed three times in the Milwaukee area, destroying two jet dragsters, in the five years prior to his Texas accident. The resilient Smith was back in the driver seat for the '68 season. - RT |

Notes: Larry raced at all NHRA national events (except the World Finals) in 1969. He ran 7.71 at Pomona, 7.77 at Dallas, 7.58 at Indy, with best of 196.07 at Indy. Cliff Smith drove Larry Bowers' car to a runner-up finish at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Larry was driving the car at the Bakersfield March Meet, but he fouled against Bill Dunlap in the opening round. On May 10, he was at OCIR for an eight-car show, but he failed to beat the 7.73 "bump." Lions held another eight-car show at the end of the month. Bowers ran 7.60 to qualify #3. A 7.91 at only 143.08 advanced over George Cerny in the first round. In the semifinal, his 7.56/192.30 lost to eventual winner Jack Jones' 7.49/193. At Dallas for the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #14 with a 7.77/191.06. Unfortunately, he blew the crankshaft right out of the engine and could not run in eliminations. On July 27, he was at Carlsbad for the NHRA Division Seven race. He reset the NHRA TG record with a 7.49 in qualifying. He went on to win, stopping Bob Noice in the final. Shortly after that (August 2), he was at OCIR for an eight-car show. His 7.76 qualified #3, but he fouled away an even better 7.63/193.54 in the first round against Tom Toler. The NHRA Nationals had a 32 car field, and Bowers ran well. He qualified #3 with a 7.58/196.07. A 7.68/194.80 beat Steve Malise's 7.90 in the first round. In round two, he defeated Dick Rosberg with a 7.71/191.08. He fouled away a 7.60/193.96 against Noice in the third round. |

Notes: At the Bakersfield March Meet, Wilcox ran a solo 7.68/187.11 in the first round, but in the second, he fouled away a 7.66 against Walt Stevens. On March 16 he was at Riverside for the HRM Championships. He qualified #5 in the eight-car show forcing him to run low qualifier Mike Snively in the first round. His 7.89/188.67 lost to Snively's 7.77/190. OCIR held a race on May 10 that had 21 cars attempt to qualify for the eight-car show. Norm qualified on the "bump" with a 7.73. He rolled though the lights in the first round, and fouled against Walt Rhoades. Norm won over an eight-car field at Lions on July 5. He qualified #4 with a 7.62 and another 7.62/194.80 beat Rhoades in round one. In the semifinals, his 7.65/192.71 got around Rick Ramsey's 7.81/174. This put him in the final against Bob Noice. Bob had troubles and shut off on the line and Wilcox soloed to the victory with a 7.59/193.13. |

Notes: After his spectacular 1958 season, setting a world record twice for gas dragsters, Brown raced less frequently in 1959. He began the year at San Fernando on May 3, turning 160.42 mph. It was not accepted as a world record as he got to the track too late to run in eliminations, the requirement for it to be officially recognized. Dick Harryman, from Granada Hills, who built the engine, continued getting even more horsepower out of the motor. On July 5, he took Top Eliminator at San Fernando with a 9.26 at 156 mph. At San Gabriel on July 11, he got Top Speed with 157 mph. Newspapers also reported that he was running a sidewinder dragster in July. He died at Lions on Sep. 12 while testing Ronnie Scrima's dragster. Photo: George Klass Collection - MB |

Notes: Larry was at Tri-City for the NHRA Division 3 Opener on June 2. He ran some impressive speeds. His first-round 188.28 beat Larry Hart, who crossed the centerline. In the semifinals, he beat Larry Janney with a 7.50/189.06. He faced Rick Tope in the final and Rick was running about two-tenths off his pace. Unfortunately, Larry fouled in the final and Tope coasted to the win with a 12.44. |

Notes: Walt was running really well at OCIR in September. He was there for a 16-car "Combo" race. He won his first-round with a 7.48/182.92 while a second round 7.41/187.50 advanced. In the semifinals, Walt ran 7.53/181.45 over Sid Branders' 7.88/183. In the final, he went up against low qualifier Don Enriquez, and despite a quicker 7.43/193.13, he finished second best to Don's 7.44/198. Shortly after that (Sept. 19), he was back at OCIR for the NHRA Division Seven race. Qualifying for the Top Gas portion of the show was easy as only eight-cars showed for the eight-car field. But Walt was running well. An opening round 7.37 beat Jim Scott's 7.42, and in the semifinal, he set Low ET with a 7.32/193.54 that beat Sam Davis troubled 11.39 in the "Freight Train." Once again, he faced Enriquez in the final, only this time, his 7.32/194.38 got the victory over Don's 7.41/193. |
