Notes: Jack and Bill Schultz had one of the quickest Top Gas cars going in the super-competitive class during '68. At the NHRA Winternationals, they qualified #3 in the sixteen-car field with a 7.73/194.80. A first-round 8.05/193.98 took care of Earl Poage's 8.08/166. In round two, Jack beat Monty Montgomery with a 7.74/182.54. He was quick on the lights in the semifinal with his 7.79/194.38, beating Billy Scott's quicker 7.77/192. In the final, he faced Gordon Collett. Jones slowed to an 8.04/193.96, which gave him the runner-up spot to Gordon's 7.88/187. The team then went to Las Vegas for the Stardust Open. It was an eight-car field, and Jones qualified #1 with a 7.81/194.38 (Top Speed). He improved to 7.80/193.74 in the opening round to beat Bill Smith, and in the semifinal, Tony Nancy fouled against him, so he advanced with a 7.94/159.85. He faced the "Freight Train" driven by Billy Scott in the final. The "Train" smoked the tires, and Jones set Low ET while winning with a 7.74/193.12 over Scott's 8.06/175. He got a big win on July 20 at Lions for the PDA Professional Dragster Championships. Jack beat the "Freight Train" in the final with a 7.57/199.10. To get into the final, he ran times of 7.51, 7.58, 7.63, and 7.70. Jack ran 7.60, no time, 7.66, and 7.64 to win Indy. On October 26, they were at Irwindale for a sixteen-car show. Jack set Low ET with a 7.55/200.88 in the second round over Phil Soares' ailing car. In the semifinals, a 7.63/201.34 beat the "Gas House Gang's" 7.88/191. Jack won the show with a final round 7.68/202.70 (Top Speed) over Don Hampton's 7.77/189. The team was back at Irwindale on December 8 for an eight-car show. Jack qualified #2 with a 7.66, and in the first round, he beat the "Gaslight" with a 7.74/192.30. In the semifinal, he stayed consistent with a 7.74/196.06 over Soares' 7.93/190. He eased to an 8.77 victory when Bob Muravez crossed the centerline in the final. |

Notes: On the drawing boards for three years and in construction for six months, this dual-engined, four-wheel-drive $8,000 dragster debuted at Lions with Fritz Voigt driving on June 21. He ran an impressive 9.93 and 149.50 mph. Kenny Droesbeck from Norwalk, a partner with Paul Nicolini in the Sidewinder dragster, was a partner in the operation. Voigt and Mickey Thompson shared driving duties until they towed it back east with the intention of racing at the U.S. Nationals. En route, they stopped at Bonneville Salt Flats, where Thompson ran 294 mph, becoming the fastest living American driver. After Bonneville, they returned to California, never getting to the Nationals. His appetite wetted for land speed racing, Mickey returned to begin work on his 4-engine Challenger I. Before going to the Salt Flats, Mickey made some good runs in his dual-engine dragster. The day after the car's debut at Lions, Mickey and Voigt both drove at San Fernando on June 22, Voigt clocking the best with 10.37 at 148.51 mph. On Aug. 2 at Lions, the last drag race before their departure east, Voigt drove but lost in the first round of eliminations. After Bonneville, they returned to California and focused attention on building Challenger I. Photo: George Klass Collection - MB |

Notes: Team aka Harryman, Brown & Frank. Made cover of 5/31/58 Drag News, caption claiming car/driver held gas record (set earlier) of 157.61. Brown died sorting out the Scrima-Adams-Smith dragster at Lions in September 1959. - RT; The car debuted at San Fernando on Feb. 16, setting a track record 147.54 mph. The next week at Lions, it turned 149.75 mph. Lions and San Fernando were offering substantial prize money for the first gas dragster to go over 150. Brown, only 19 years old, was the first to do it, hitting 152.28 mph at San Fernando on Mar. 2. Brown was on a roll as he then broke that mark by going 157.61 mph at San Fernando two weeks later. Notes: Set both ends of the record at the start of NHRA National Record certification: Atco, NJ, 7/13/60 at 9.066/168.85.; He regularly raced at York U.S. 30-almost weekly except for occasional forays elsewhere. At York, on June 4, he turned 8.95 at 169.00 mph. The following week at York, he took Top Eliminator at 169.811 mph with a national record time of 8.84. This accomplishment and beating Tommy Ivo at a match race at York on July 3 with a time of 8.87 at 169.00 mph brought him a measure of national recognition. Minnesota Dragways paid him to appear to race against Bruce Norman and the Big Wheel dragster on July 31. A week later, at Petersburg Airport in Virginia, Tucci was racing the A/Comp Austin Bantam coupe of the Lickliter Brothers. Tucci took the win, but things went awry with his opponent's vehicle behind him. A clutch explosion started several things happening that resulted in the coupe being unable to steer or stop. It plowed into the rear of Tucci's slowing car. Tucci suffered severe spinal injuries, paralyzing him from the waist down. Although confined to a wheelchair, Bilbow built another dragster that he drove with Tucci serving as his crew chief. At the end of the year, they took the new dragster on a West Coast barnstorming tour. Photo: George Klass Collection - MB |

Notes: Gary Wood and Ron Colson teamed up on this gas dragster. It was unusual in that it used a rear suspension. Gary built the frame and fabricated a spring-shock system. The idea was to transfer the weight so that the rear end could act as a fulcrum instead of having the pinion climb the rear gear and causing wheelstands. Each rear shock had a load capacity of 1,000 lbs. The engine in the "Stiletto" was a '64 Chevy 327. A 3/5/8 stroker crank from Crankshaft Company brought the displacement up to 368. The rods were also from CSC, and the pistons were from JE. Isky supplied the cam. The blower manifold was from Weiand. John Reed set up the GMC 6/71 for the team, and a Hilborn two-holer injection unit was used. Gary also built the headers. The power was put to the ground by an Olds rear with 4.10 gears, and the car's weight was only 950 lbs. In June, Colson qualified #4 at Bristol for the NHRA Springnationals with an 8.64/177.51.; At Rockford on May 2, he ran 8.50 at 173 mph. At Cordova, on Aug. 26, he ran 8.733 at 183.28 mph. Notes: Bowling had great hopes for his new dragster when he and his mother set out from California to enter the car in the U.S. Nationals in Kansas City. But misfortune struck when a wheel came off his tow trailer. When they finally got the trailer repaired, he knew he couldn't make it to Kansas City by the deadline to be in the competition. He drove ahead anyway because he wanted to see the racing. The officials wouldn't let him compete but did say that he could make an unofficial test run to try out his car. After the Nationals, he returned to California and began entering his dragster every week at the San Gabriel Valley Drag Strip. Even though it was late in the strip's season, he won six Top Eliminator titles before the strip ended the 1956 season. Photo: Hot Rod (Jan. 2005), p. 17 - MB |

Notes: Uyehara was running well at the Sears Point Open race. He qualified #1 with a 7.68/194.60 and made it into the final before losing to Walt Rhoades. Dave was at OCIR for an eight-car show on May 10. There were 21 cars attempting to qualify and his 7.66/198.22 got him the #6 spot. Unfortunately, a 7.92/199.54 in the first round, lost to eventual winner Jack Jones' 7.90/191. |

Notes: Low qualifier at 71 Winters, then ran a great 7.25 in the first round. However, lost to Walt Stevens' 7.58. Was that a massive holeshot by Walt or a disqualification by Larry? |

Notes: After the disastrous wreck at Oklahoma City in late August 1959, Johansen rebuilt the twin-engine dragster. Glen Ward had recovered from injuries sustained in that wreck, and Johansen asked him to be his driver again for 1960. Ward jumped back in the driver's seat when the new car debuted at the March Meet at Bakersfield. The car had plenty of first-time-out bugs, and Ward had to shut it off when racing Bob's Muffler's dragster in eliminations. Johansen got it all sorted out the following week in time for Ward to take runner-up to Lefty Mudersbach in the top eliminator finals at Lions on Mar. 13. This was despite having throttle troubles all day long. His best time was in the 5th round of eliminations against Langford-Brown-Leffler-Loukas when he ran 9.55 at 152.28 mph. The following week at Lions on Mar. 20, he beat Don Prudhomme in the 4th round with a new Drag News 1320 national record of 8.85 seconds. He backed it up in the final round of eliminations with an 8.91 but lost to Glen Stokey. The new dragster was back in the business of breaking records, just like its predecessor. The following week at Lions on Mar. 27, he took top eliminator with 9.46 at 164.83 mph and a class win with a faster 8.94 at 168.22 mph. In the top eliminator eliminations, he beat a stellar field, including Don Prudhomme, Albertson Olds, and Tommy Ivo. The following week, they towed the car up to Santa Maria for a 2-day meet on Apr. 2/3. Ward took top eliminator and set a new track record with 9.17 at 169.81 mph. The following week, he was back at Lions on Apr. 10, where he got runner-up in top eliminator to Lefty Mudersbach. His best time came in a round against Glen Stokey when he ran 9.02 at 168.86 mph. At the new Deer Valley Dragway in Phoenix, Ward set a new Drag News 1320 record with 177.86 mph. He lost in the first round of gas eliminations to Dode Martin, driving the Dragmaster with a losing 9.26 at 163.84 mph when he experienced trouble getting off the starting line. Ward's final time driving the dragster came on May 14 at Lions when he won top eliminator with 9.33 at 168.85 mph. Some unexplained health problems caused the dragster to remain inactive for several weeks. Johansen went with Jack Chrisman as the driver for the "ailing" Glen Ward for a race at Lions on July 2. He stayed with Chrisman for the rest of the season. Photo: Drag Cars in Motion Picture Thread, p. 1909, in Jalopy Journal, The H.A.M.B. -- MB |
