Notes: In 1969, it ran 7.59 at Lions, 7.65 185.95 at Bakersfield March Meet, 7.75 at Indy Nationals. Noice qualified #5 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.69/199.55. In the opening round, he improved to 7.59/197.80 to beat Jim Bunker. A 7.58/197.80 dropped Mark Pieri's 7.58/201 in a close race in round two. In the semifinal, he lost to eventual winner Dave Grassi's 7.60/193. He also ran well at the Bakersfield March Meet. A 7.65/185.95 advanced in the first round, but he fouled against Bill Dunlap in round two. The following week (March 9), he was at OCIR for an eight-car show. His 7.76/190.66 qualified second to Hal Branin's 7.76/191. But he broke in qualifying and was unable to run in eliminations. |

Notes: 142" SPE chassis. This is Big Tom Larkin (the older one). Larkin started the season at Lions for an eight-car show on Jan 7. He qualified #1 with a 7.90 and ran a best of 7.88 in eliminations on his way to a final round meeting with Norm Wilcox. Tommy took the victory with a 7.91. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, Larkin qualified #5 with an 8.00/189.86. The car weighed in at 1,160 lbs. He improved to a 7.97/176.12 in the first round, to beat Bill Smith in the "Otie's Speed Shop" car, but an even better 7.96/189.06 in round two lost to Rich Rogers' Low ET of the meet blast of 7.86/192. On March 19, Larkin was at Irwindale for another eight-car show. His 7.93 qualified #1, but he fouled in the first round. He was at Riverside for the HRM Championships in April. In the first round his 7.98/174.41 beat Bob Dodge and in round two a 7.92/189.06 got around Larry Bowers' 8.05/193. Both he and Billy Scott ran 7.93 (Larkin at 189.06) in the semifinals, but Scott got to the finish line first. In a June '67 Drag News there's an ad for SPE claiming that Tom Larkin set the NHRA Top Gas record at 7.72 using their chassis. - RH |

Notes: Won Top Gas at Bakersfield for the second year in a row. | Gordon was at National Trail at July 12 for a match race against Tony Nancy. Gordon warmed up with an 8.63 which was good enough for a new gas dragster track record. The match race never came off as it rained and the race was cancelled. He was back at National Trail on July 26 making some runs and he reset the track record to 8.58/182.73. |

Notes: When this gas dragster began having success, reporters in Drag News referred to the owners of this dragster just by their first names (even in article titles and advertisements). For instance, when they raced at Minnesota Dragways on Oct. 2, the title read "Bud, Don & John set low E.T. of meet." It wasn't until a few months later that it became more known as The Guzler. At Minnesota Dragways on Aug. 14, they lost a match against The Big Wheel dragster, their best run being 9.39 at 157 mph. At the Oct. 2 race at Minnesota Dragways when they got the meet's low ET, they ran 9.36 at 161.87 mph. They also recorded a 175 mph run at Minnesota, giving notice that they were on the rise. They became the first gas dragster to go over 180 mph when they turned 181.467 mph at Oswego on Oct. 16. This got them national notice and they were invited to run at Lions when they scheduled a winter vacation trip to California. En route to California, they made a stop at Green Valley Drag Strip on Nov. 6, where they won the A/GD class and took top eliminator with 9.00 at 163.59 mph. In the process, they beat Jimmy Nix, who seemed unbeatable prior to their win. They got to California, but they much-ballyhooed showing at Lions was rained out on Nov. 12. They towed over to San Fernando for a Nov. 13 race, but were beaten by Tommy Ivo when the clutch blew and driver Kranenberg suffered minor leg injuries. They made a showing at Lions on Nov. 19 after the rained-out race, but had trouble getting use to the strip. They had to return home to Illinois after that race. Notes: For the last half of the 1960 season, he installed a new blown Chevy engine in his dragster. It was 360 c.i., a bit larger than the 301 c.i. motor he had been running. Research was unable to find if this bumped him up from the B/D class he had been running in, but it likely did. He set a new track record at De Soto Airport with 9.696 at 153.32 mph on Sep. 18. Notes: After a couple of seasons campaigning an old Allison-powered Green Monster car he'd purchased from the Arfons brothers, Pendleton built this winged 128", 2400-lb slingshot rail, which he began campaigning in May 1961. The 1,710-cube Allison-powered rail was notable for the pair of four-foot airfoils (wings) that flanked the engine and provided top-end downforce. It was reportedly run through 1963. The car was described in a four-page feature in the 11/62 issue of Popular Hot Rodding. - RT | Pendleton added a rocket to the car. Put a driver in it. A young guy. The car crashed at Gary, US 30, killing the driver. Phil Engledrum put the crash photos on the cover of a magazine.; Detachable wings were added to the car instead of ballast to hold the rear of the car down at high speeds. Notes: Collett qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. His 7.92/190.66 just made the show. In the opening round, he improved to 7.87/191.08 to defeat Gary Cochran. Rico Paris fouled against him in round two, and Gordon made an easy 11.02/85.87 run to advance. Norm Wilcox lost fire in the semifinal, and Collett soloed at 12.96/69.66. He faced Jack Jones in the final. Jones had been running steady 7.7's, but he fell off to an 8.04/193 in the final that lost to Collett's 7.88/187.10. Gordon Won Top Gas Eliminator at the NHRA Winternationals in 1966, 1967, and 1968. |

Notes: Pat Dakin drove G.L. Rupp's Woody car, short Hanna body, Div. 3 Top Gas competitor. I think this car won at least one of the WCS division races in 1970 (Indy?) - I will check. | Dakin was at Bluegrass Dragway on September 20 for the final NHRA Division 3 race. He beat Gordon Collett and Bill Mullins to meet Dale Funk in the final. It was a good race, but Dale's 7.49/200 beat Pat's 7.54/188.28. |
