Notes: Willie Collier, a Greyhound bus driver, began drag racing in 1954 with '32 Ford B/A coupe, racing primarily at Madera where he had good success. In 1956, he bought an unfinished dragster from Bob Peverley and Don Tibbles, fellow members of the Santa Maria Dragons. Collier installed the Ardun-Merc engine and began racing it at Santa Maria. At the first outing there on Sep. 2, he ran 105.88 mph, winning Top Eliminator and the B Open Gas class. At the Oct. 7 race he turned 12.63 at 104.71 mph. Notes: Collins's homemade dragster was built at a cost of about $1,300. He spent about 1,000 hours on it. He built the frame out of square tubing and plucked the engine out of a '57 Chrysler. He mounted four carbs on the Hemi. He got the rear slicks from a place in Little River and got the front tires from a policeman friend's motorcycle. Notes: Gary Wood and Ron Colson teamed up on this gas dragster. It was unusual in that it used a rear suspension. Gary built the frame and fabricated a spring-shock system. The idea was to transfer the weight so that the rear end could act as a fulcrum instead of having the pinion climb the rear gear and causing wheelstands. Each rear shock had a load capacity of 1,000 lbs. The engine in the "Stiletto" was a '64 Chevy 327. A 3/5/8 stroker crank from Crankshaft Company brought the displacement up to 368. The rods were also from CSC, and the pistons were from JE. Isky supplied the cam. The blower manifold was from Weiand. John Reed set up the GMC 6/71 for the team, and a Hilborn two-holer injection unit was used. Gary also built the headers. The power was put to the ground by an Olds rear with 4.10 gears, and the car's weight was only 950 lbs. In June, Colson qualified #4 at Bristol for the NHRA Springnationals with an 8.64/177.51.; At Rockford on May 2, he ran 8.50 at 173 mph. At Cordova, on Aug. 26, he ran 8.733 at 183.28 mph. Notes: Ron was at Fremont on February 26, where he ran a 7.90. This was really good as he was running a Chevy, and few could keep up with the Hemis at this time. Colson was at St. Louis in June for the AHRA 1/8 Mile Springnationals. He exploded a supercharger Saturday, and in less than one hour, he rebuilt it and returned to win Top Gas on Sunday with a record 5.45. Ron qualified #26 at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals with an 8.08/187, but he lost to Walt Rhoades in the first round. The motor was a stroked 396.; At Cordova on May 7, he ran 8.01. A week later, at Oswego, he ran 8.11 at 197.89 mph. A week after, he ran 8.00 at 188 mph at Detroit Dragway. At the 14th World Series of Drag Racing at Cordova on August 25, several newspapers reported that he ran 6.892 in time trials, but that would have been more than a second under his times during the season. That looks very suspicious, but to further complicate matters, a gas dragster driven by George Smith from Kenner, Louisiana, was reported to have been clocked at 6.048. Very puzzling.
