Notes: Per a feature story in the 11/62 issue of Popular Hot Rodding, this was a former Green Monster car, purchased from the Arfons brothers in 1959. This V-12 car featured the fabled 400-lb tug boat clutch. Based on his experiences with this 3,000-lb car, Pendleton designed his own Allison-powered slingshot from scratch and began campaigning it in 1961. The feature cited times of "169 mph. Notes: They built a new '57 engine (Drag News, 1/9/60, reported that it was just one of the two motors) for their 2-engined dragster to begin the season. They put Algon injectors on both motors. They ran at Lions with the new set-up on Jan. 3, taking Top Eliminator with 9.20 at 161.87 mph. They ran successfully in three other races at Lions before listing the dragster for sale in the 4/16/60 issue of Drag News. Notes: According to MotorTrend writer Rob Kinnan, the renowned twin-engine dragster that obliterated the AA/GD records in 1960 had its debut in 1958. Kinnan wrote, "Cam, crankshaft, and cylinder head manufacturer Howard Johansen's twin-engine rail ran a pair of poked and stroked 283 Chevys and sat in a rigid, homebuilt, 100-inch-wheelbase chassis. The car was built in 1958, originally with three two-barrels on each engine and weighing 1,350 pounds. After a few outings in that configuration, they stuck on two 4/71 blowers (each with four Stromberg 97 carbs), then put single AFBs on the blowers and finally two-hole Hilborn injectors by 1960." That is mostly correct. The right engine was 283 cubic inches, but the left engine was 330 inches or a total of 613 cubic inches. The dragster was owned, tuned, and built by Howard Johansen. By the end of December 1958, Phil Johnson owned the dragster, Johansen did the tuning, and Glen Ward was the driver. Ward wasn't the first driver, though. At its first outing at Long Beach, Lonnie Butts was driving. On its first pass, the dragster did a giant wheelstand. Butts didn't want any part of that, so they put the dragster on the trailer and looked for another driver. Glen Ward, a barber, had been driving a gas Oldsmobile dragster, and he jumped at their offer to have him drive the dual-engine dragster. They put him behind the wheel at a race at Lions on Nov. 16. They also put two 4/71 GMC superchargers on the engines for the first time, with good effect. Ward got top eliminator with 9.85 at 155.44 mph. The following week at Lions, he didn't get top eliminator because a rod got shoved through the pan on the right side engine. He did get the top time/speed of the meet with 9.84 at 155.70 mph. After repairing the engine, they towed the car to Bakersfield, and that's where the car showed its potential. Running with leveled carbs atop the blowers, he set a new world ET record of 9.10 and a track record of 166.05 mph. They would replace the carb set-up at the beginning of 1959 with Hilborn injectors. Notes: Research hasn't been able to uncover much about this unique gas dragster other than the little bit written about a tune-up run it made at Fremont on Oct. 25. Don Jensen, past president of the Hayward Head Hunters, wrote me: "Palamides bought Jack Friedlands' dragster in the early '60s and did numerous modifications including this two-blower setup on the Chrysler powerplant." The photo caption in Drag News stated that it had turned a best speed of 165.90 mph prior to its tune-up run at Fremont on Oct. 25. The Drag News article didn't mention who did the driving. In 1961, Palamides had several drivers at the wheel of his "California Kid" A/FD the next year, minus the 2 blowers. They included Archie Liederbrand, Bob Smith, and Bob Sbabaro at various times. Notes: After racing for seven years and generally getting runner-up slots at the big meets, Moss seriously considered giving up racing after a second runner-up at the NHRA National Championships at Detroit Dragway. He ran 9.74 at 165.44 mph to lose to Rodney Singer. Earlier in the year, he did well enough at smaller events. At Roswell, New Mexico, on Apr. 12, he got top eliminator with his twin 354-inch Chevies with 9.96 at 146.57 mph. At Wichita Falls on May 31, he got the top speed with 153 mph, but got runner-up in the top eliminator finals when he blew one of his engines.
