Notes: Finley became more accustomed to driving the old Albertson Olds dragster that he had bought in 1961. He started racing at other race tracks in Alabama beyond the nearby two in Jefferson County. He stayed close to home at the beginning of the season. He took a top eliminator win at Lassiter Mountain on Feb. 4. On Apr. 1 at Helena Drag Strip he took top eliminator with 160.71 mph. At Manassas Drag Strip he was runner-up to Lewis Carden in the top eliminator finals on June 17. On July 8 at Helena he was beaten by Carden in a two-out-of-three match race. On July 21 he took a top eliminator win at Green Valley Drag Strip in Gadsden, Alabama, with 152.54 mph. On July 22 he won top eliminator at Helena. He finished out the season at Helena on Dec. 9 with a good 163.68 mph top speed. In a bit of newspaper hype, he was nicknamed "Fireball," but I don't think that stuck. Notes: Right out of the gate, this dragster looked to be something special. It made a good showing at the U.S. Nationals in 1958 at Oklahoma City. In its first outing in '59 at Santa Ana, it clocked 163.63 mph in 9.61, its fastest run of the season. On Feb. 15 at Santa Ana, Nelson took Top Eliminator. On Mar. 8 at San Gabriel, Nelson took Top Eliminator and set track records with 9.70 and 149.25 mph. On Apr. 5 at San Gabriel, it set a strip speed record with 155.97 mph. In early July at Santa Ana, Nelson was seriously injured when he crashed. While he recovered, Dode Martin took over driving duties. He had driven a time or two before, but Nelson had been the primary driver before the crash. At Oklahoma City in August, Martin won top gas eliminator at the Mar-Car 1,000-Foot Invitational, winning a $500 savings bond. Dode drove at the Detroit National Championships, setting a national time mark at 9.03. The success of this original Dragmaster dragster brought success to Martin and Nelson as other racers wanted these well-built chassis. They began building them for the growing drag racing community. Notes: Mickey Brown, only 21 years old at the start of the season, was a drag racer on the rise. In '58, he became the first man to go over 150 MPH in a gas dragster. In 1959 he wracked up class wins, TE victories, and set strip and national records racing at tracks in Southern California. May was an especially fruitful month. On May 3 at Santa Maria, he set a strip Top Speed record of 163.63 mph. On May 9 at Lions, he set a strip and national Drag News 1320 speed record of 161.29 mph. Three weeks later, at Lions on May 30, he improved that national record mark with a 161.87 mph clocking. It was evident that young Mickey was an ascending star in the gas dragster ranks. But that came to an abrupt end for the young man on Sep. 12. On that fateful day, Ronnie Scrima and Mort Smith were testing a new short wheelbase (93") dragster at Lions. They had dropped Gene Adams's Oldsmobile engine in the car but were having a hard time getting it down the track. Mickey Brown had left his own Olds-powered dragster at home, and he offered to see if he could drive the car. About 100 feet from the starting line, he lost control and flipped upside down, suffering fatal injuries because his head got outside the confines of the roll bar. Racers remembered him as a kind of wild but fun-loving kid. Photo: "'50s Drags in Color," Pat Ganahl's Rod & Custom website - MB

Notes: This gas dragster confined its racing to Santa Maria Drag Strip. The El Coyote Racing Team consisted of Grider, owner Skip Schuyler, Tony Domingos, and Ed Schultz. On Apr. 5, it set a new track record 10.27 at 152.54 mph. On May 3, it tied for Top Eliminator with an excellent Top Speed for a gas dragster of 163.52 mph. On July 5, it copped Top Eliminator with a 159.29 mph run. Grider teamed up with two others to field their own dragster at the end of the 1959 season, debuting a Chassis Research dragster at Santa Maria on Nov. 1. The other owners in the dragster were Ed Schultz and Taylor. They turned a promising 10.30 at 157.89 mph. Photo: Santa Maria Times, Apr. 6, 1959 - MB

Notes: The 1958 season saw the evolution of the iconic Hustler dragster of Chrisman & Cannon from an injected B/GD to a full-bodied A/FD, one of the most famous cars in drag race history. It ran on gas up through when it won the best-engineered car award at the NHRA Nationals at Oklahoma City in late August. They had the fully-enclosed aluminum body with the bullet-shaped front made in time for the March Meet at Bakersfield. It ran in the B/D class without a supercharger or front cowling when it won Top Eliminator at the Santa Ana Gold Cup race on Apr. 20, where it turned 10.76 at 140.97 mph. They had the new front-mounted supercharger on the car when it raced at Lions on June 7, improving their time to 10.28 at 147.29 mph. On June 14 at Lions, Cannon may have collected on his wager with Mickey Thompson as Art ran 152.80 mph in the course of winning Top Eliminator. They had trouble keeping the motor in one piece for several weeks, with a string of blown engines plaguing them in June and into July. But once they got those problems sorted out, they returned to their winning ways and good times (in more ways than one). They went through three rounds at the Nationals at Oklahoma City before getting beaten by Ted Cyr. At the Drag Racers, Inc. world championships at Riverside on Sep. 27, they ran the engine on fuel for the first time. They turned 9.61 at 157.72 mph on their first run on alcohol. In the first round of eliminations, Art beat Pete Ogden, who was driving Romeo Palamides' dragster with a 9.50 at 163.33 mph clocking. In round 2, he beat Hank Vincent's Top Banana with a 9.60 run. The 3rd round was his undoing when he added 20% nitro to the alcohol mix and blew the blower. A blown blower was their undoing at the race at Gardner Field in Taft in Central California, but not before setting a strip record on both ends with 9.39 at 163.33 mph. The year concluded with other uneventful outings, but there was the promise of more good things to come in 1959, including the appearance of a new car-Hustler II. That would turn this car into the fabled Hustler I. Photo: Hot Rod, Jan. 1959 - MB

Notes: Lefty Mudersbach teamed up with Tom Grove of Anaheim and Chey Herbert to field an in-line injected Chevy motored twin-engined dragster in 1959. Lefty took it to Santa Ana on Jan. 13 for its first outing with just a single engine to road-test it. He turned 11.46 at 142.85 mph. Performing well, he took that engine out and dropped the second engine in to test it on Jan. 25, again at Santa Ana. It also did well, turning 11.30 at 141.75 mph. Its next outing was with both motors at Bakersfield on Feb. 1, where he took gas Top Eliminator with 9.83 at 153,84 mph. Two weeks later, he won the A/D class at Riverside with 9.51 at 155.46 mph. In March, he ran at Lions twice, clocking 9.50 at 152.80 mph on Mar. 8 and 9.66 at 155,97 mph. Tom Grove was still with Lefty on Mar. 29 when he ran 9.54 at 156.79 mph at San Fernando, but then Grove went his separate way to do his own thing. Lefty first had a run over 160 mph at San Gabriel on May 2 when he turned 161.29 mph. He also began getting faster, tuning 9.21 at San Fernando the very next week. It was that way the entire 1959 season, improving steadily each outing, wracking up wins, and improving his times at drag strips in the Southland, particularly at Lions, where he set a couple of Drag News 1320 records. Notes: Paul Nicolini and Harry Duncan sold their temperamental Sidewinder in 1958 to Chuck Jones from Orange, and Joe Mailliard, from Long Beach. They divided the labor, Jones handling the chassis, and Mailliard was the tuner. They got Jack Chrisman to be the driver. One of the first outings was at Santa Ana on Aug 17, where Chrisman turned 9.89 at 147.55 mph. On Sep 20 at Lions, he won Top Eliminator with 9.96 at 149.25 mph. The next day at Santa Ana, he took Top Eliminator with 10.11 at 151,57 mph. On Oct 11 at Lions, he won Top Eliminator with best times of 9.67 at 152.02 mph. A week later, at Lions, he ran 9.59 at 154.37 mph. They were periodically plagued with flinging chains, a common occurrence with sidewinder dragsters. On Nov 1 at Lions, they broke in a new engine, clocking 9.96 and 155.44 mph before the end of the meet. On Nov 23 at Lions, they closed out the year with 9.86 at 151.00 mph. Notes: This iteration of the Green Monster was built to showcase a WWII-era Packard-built Rolls-Royce Merlin V-12, which appears quite similar in pictures to their typical go-to mill, the 1710-cube Allison. The factory-rated 1,300-hp Merlin engine (1,700 claimed in race trim) is widely considered to be the factor that cemented the P-51 Mustang's reputation as the best all-around fighter of WWII. Also used in the Spitfire, Hurricane, Mosquito, and numerous other warplanes. The Arfons' most successful piston-engined car, Green Monster #11 was raced frequently from 1957/59. The Merlin-powered "Monster" twice set the mph record at Union Grove on July 6/1958, with speeds of 146.58 and 150.00 flat. - RT | Set Top Speed at 161.87 at NHRA Nationals at Oklahoma City on 8/30/58.

Notes: Throughout the latter part of the 1959 season, newspapers touted this twin-engine dragster as the world's "fastest unsupercharged, carbureted gas dragster." From the beginning of the season to the end, they liked to point out that the dragster had twelve carburetors. At no time in 1959 did they run injectors on the Chevy engines. At the beginning of the season, the dragster was known as the Mudersbach-Groves-Herbert Cams Special. Tom Groves of Anaheim was an early partner in the endeavor, but by March, Groves was no longer a part of the dragster operation. They picked Santa Ana to do their maiden testing outings, opting to run each engine singly before putting both engines in the dragster for full-out competition. Their first outing was at Santa Ana on Jan. 13, running in B/D. They turned 11.41 at 142.85 mph on that first outing. Then a week later, on Jan. 25 at Santa Ana, they tested the other Chee motor and turned 11.30 at 141.74 mph. From then on, it was all systems go as a twin-engine, unblown, carbureted gas screamer. They debuted at Riverside on Feb. 15 and took top gas eliminator with 9.51 at 155.46 mph. At Lions on Mar. 8, they took Low ET of the meet with 9.50 and a speed of 152.80 mph. Returning to Lions on Mar. 15, they got Top Eliminator with 9.66 at 155.97 mph. Drag News had just started what would evolve into their 1320 Records program, initially calling it the Quarter Mile Acceleration Records. Their 155.97 mph run at Lions on Mar. 15 was good enough to give them the Top Speed record in that new program. On Apr. 26 at Lions, they turned 154.63 for the meet's Top Speed. San Gabriel Valley Drag Strip dropped their cubic inch limitations for dragsters which permitted twin-engine dragsters to compete on May 2. Mudersbach took advantage of that new policy and got Top Speed and Low ET of the meet at 9.42 at 161.29 mph. On May 9, he took the Top Eliminator at Lions with 9.46 at 160.14 mph. The next day he ran at San Fernando, getting the top time at 9.21 at 160.42 mph. On May 16 at San Gabriel, he took Top Eliminator at 9.40 at 158.73 mph. The next day at Riverside, he took top gas eliminator with 9.70 at 155.00 mph. Things were really clicking for Lefty, and the wins were piling up, but then, for some reason, racing halted for the Herbert Cam Special until September. Research could not determine why the dragster took an almost four-month "vacation." Lefty got a couple of driving jobs with other dragsters during this interim. They didn't compete again until late September. They returned to racing at Lions on Sep. 26 when they clocked 9.30 at 157 mph. They returned to Lions a week later, on Oct. 3, and took the Top Eliminator with 9.28 at 158.17 mph. They were back in the groove. Notes: Ron Scrima owned the Chassis Research TE-440 chassis, Gene Adams provided the motor and Mort Smith normally piloted. This is the car Mickey Brown died in on a spur-of-the-moment invitation to test a new engine installation. The car has been restored and is nostalgia-raced with a 296" Flathead. - RT
