Notes: Tennant drove his Ranger aircraft engined, four-wheel drive dragster at a few races in 1959. He turned 136.36 mph at Akron Municipal Airport on May 24. His best showing was at the 2nd Annual Union Grove National Championship Drag Race on July 11-12. He set a new track record for gas dragsters on the first day of the meet with 147.54 mph. The next day, he ran even faster with a 157.89 mph clocking. He qualified for NHRA's Detroit National Championships, but research could not find if he attended. Notes: Team aka Harryman, Brown & Frank. Made cover of 5/31/58 Drag News, caption claiming car/driver held gas record (set earlier) of 157.61. Brown died sorting out the Scrima-Adams-Smith dragster at Lions in September 1959. - RT; The car debuted at San Fernando on Feb. 16, setting a track record 147.54 mph. The next week at Lions, it turned 149.75 mph. Lions and San Fernando were offering substantial prize money for the first gas dragster to go over 150. Brown, only 19 years old, was the first to do it, hitting 152.28 mph at San Fernando on Mar. 2. Brown was on a roll as he then broke that mark by going 157.61 mph at San Fernando two weeks later. Notes: After blowing their engine in the last race of the 1958 season at Spokane, members of the Cogs car club started rebuilding a new gas dragster with a '59 Chrysler motor, Beast IV. They had the new car ready for running at Shelton's race on June 7 where they clocked 9.86 at 154.90 mph. Notes: After running a very successful unblown injected 354 '55 Chrysler-engined B gas dragster in '59, they mounted a blower on a '58 Chrysler 454 motor in '60 to run in A/GD. They broke an axle on their first outing at San Antonio on Jan. 3 but still took a class win, coasting across the finish at 120 mph. They took Top Eliminator at the season-opener at Caddo Mills on Mar. 13. By August, their partnership may have dissolved as most articles after that didn't mention Mabry and Hunt was driving his own dragster, but that needs confirmation. Notes: One of the first outings for this beautiful car was at Lions on Sep. 1/3, 1956. They received the best appearing car and crew award. According to the Wilmington Press Journal (8/31/56), its appearance had been much anticipated, it being a "much-publicized fiberglas car." It enjoyed little success until Nov. 3, 1957, when Stamp took Top Eliminator at Bakersfield with a Top Speed of 157.06 mph. A month later on Dec. 1 at Bakersfield, he became that drag strip's first fatality. After being clocked at a speed of 157 mph, he was unable to slow the car when his throttle stuck. He tried to do a broadside skid and the car overturned. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Bakersfield Memorial Hospital. Notes: Mickey Brown was THE MAN in the gas dragster realm in 1958. It was commonly thought that it wouldn't be possible for a gas dragster to go 150 mph. But if it did happen, Brown was the odds-on favorite to be the one to crack the 150 barrier. He kept inching closer and closer. On Feb. 16 at San Fernando, he set a track record with 147.54 mph. The next week at Lions, he ran 149.75 mph. Oh, so close. On Mar. 2 at San Fernando, he did it-being the first to pilot a gas dragster over 150 mph. He set a world record of 152.28 mph. What had previously been thought an impossible barrier for gas dragsters, he then began running regularly. Two weeks afterward, he upped his world mark at San Fernando to 157.61 mph. A week after that, he set a track record 151.00 mph. On Mar. 30 at San Fernando on Mar. 30, he got Top Eliminator with a 150.75 mph run. He got an identical speed of 150.75 mph in a Top Eliminator win at San Fernando on June 15. The 150 mph barrier was no longer a barrier, and other gas dragsters began running in the 150s, too. But Mickey Brown had been the first to lead the way. He got Low ET at the 2-day event at Chandler Associated Drag Strip in Arizona with a 10.26 clocking. Notes: Chrisman was at Lions on Jun 20 when he made a pretty amazing run. As he was nearing the lights, the pressure plate blew, which threw off both chains. The car still ran 9.04/154.63.; At the start of the year, Wayne Reed, from Long Beach, joined the others, bringing with him a new motor. On Jan 18 at Lions, they were breaking Reed's new engine, only recording best times of 10.27 and 148.27 mph, but still managed to win Top Eliminator.
