Notes: Larry qualified #8 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with an 8.03/191.88. A first-round 8.01/192.30 lost to Rick Ramsey's 7.96/188. Lions held an eight-car show on April 15, and Bowers' 7.83 qualified #1. He lasted until the semifinal before fouling out to eventual winner Walt Rhoades. On November 5, he was at San Fernando, where he won spectacularly. He faced Bob Smith in the final, and Larry had his clutch explode and rip the car in two. He won with an 8.17/187.89 over Smith's 8.19/189, and when the remains of the dragster stopped, he emerged out OK. |

He returned home to Arizona with the dragster. He entered a race at Davis-Monthan AFB in Tucson on July 15, but blew his engine. The car's best speed while competing in California was 132 mph. This V-12 car featured the fabled 400-lb tug boat clutch. Notes: George was a Top Gas qualifier at the Pomona Winternationals with an 8.22. Bolthoff was at Lions on May 14 for an eight-car show. In the opening round, his 8.19/174.41 advanced easily. He cut a good light in the semi-final, and his 8.24/172.41 held off Harrell Amyx's quicker 8.11/178. He faced Billy Scott in the final, and Scott had just run 7.96 in his semi-final race. George tried to cut the lights close again in the final and fouled, handing the win to Scott. The next day, George won at San Fernando. A semifinal 8.25/180.36 beat Bob Noice's 8.57/186, and a final round 8.96/127.84 got the victory when Gary Murphy fouled away an 8.37/187. He got another runner-up finish to Scott the following week (May 21) at Lions. He ran 8.18/161.29 in the first round over Norm Wilcox, and in the semi-final, his 8.28/155.97 took out McLeod and Lee. In the final, George's 8.33/162.74 finished second best to Scott's 8.06/190. |

Notes: Larry raced at all NHRA national events (except the World Finals) in 1969. He ran 7.71 at Pomona, 7.77 at Dallas, 7.58 at Indy, with best of 196.07 at Indy. Cliff Smith drove Larry Bowers' car to a runner-up finish at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Larry was driving the car at the Bakersfield March Meet, but he fouled against Bill Dunlap in the opening round. On May 10, he was at OCIR for an eight-car show, but he failed to beat the 7.73 "bump." Lions held another eight-car show at the end of the month. Bowers ran 7.60 to qualify #3. A 7.91 at only 143.08 advanced over George Cerny in the first round. In the semifinal, his 7.56/192.30 lost to eventual winner Jack Jones' 7.49/193. At Dallas for the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #14 with a 7.77/191.06. Unfortunately, he blew the crankshaft right out of the engine and could not run in eliminations. On July 27, he was at Carlsbad for the NHRA Division Seven race. He reset the NHRA TG record with a 7.49 in qualifying. He went on to win, stopping Bob Noice in the final. Shortly after that (August 2), he was at OCIR for an eight-car show. His 7.76 qualified #3, but he fouled away an even better 7.63/193.54 in the first round against Tom Toler. The NHRA Nationals had a 32 car field, and Bowers ran well. He qualified #3 with a 7.58/196.07. A 7.68/194.80 beat Steve Malise's 7.90 in the first round. In round two, he defeated Dick Rosberg with a 7.71/191.08. He fouled away a 7.60/193.96 against Noice in the third round. |
