Notes: Marty Byrne and George Santos were both Hayward Head Hunters car club members. For the race at Kingdon on May 5, Santos put his 306 c.i. Chevy motor in Byrne's dragster, and they set a new world record for unblown Chevy gas dragsters with 131.12 mph. On May 19 at Kingdon, they turned 125 mph. Notes: Stevens was at Bakersfield for the March Meet. It was a sixteen-car field, and in the first round, he ran 7.68/191.89 to defeat Mark Pieri's 7.85/196. Norm Wilcox fouled against him in round two, so he eased to a 10.13/95.74 to advance. But in the semifinal, he fouled against eventual winner Walt Rhoades in the "Gas House Gang" car. The following week (March 9), he was at OCIR for an eight-car show. His 7.77/193.54 (Top Speed) qualified #3.Another 7.77/181.08 in the opening round beat Jim Bunker, and in the semifinal, a 7.79/192.70 beat Bob Muravez driving the "Freight Train. He faced Mike Snively in the final, and Walt's 7.81/191.88 got the victory over Snively's 7.98. His next stop was at Riverside for the HRM Championships. This was an eight-car show, and he failed to break into the 7.77 "bump." |

Notes: Hal set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 7.76/191.66 at an eight-car event at OCIR on March 9. A first-round 7.83/192.30 lost to Mike Snively's 7.79/185.
