Notes: Poole ran in the A Open class at Cordova in 1956, but research was unable to find what kind of vehicle he was using. But he brought out a blown Chrysler-powered dragster using five carburetors in 1957. At Cordova on Mar. 31, he set a track record 145.631 mph on alcohol. He thought if he used nitro, he might be able to break the world mark of 166 mph. He tried to break the world record on Apr. 7 but came up short. That was his last try before entering the army. He came home on furlough for another try at the world record on June 30, again breaking the track record but short of the world record. After getting out of the army in 1959, he tried racing again at Cordova but kept breaking parts. Photo: Quad-City Times, July 7, 1957 - MB | Listing on gas for now. |

Notes: Sidestepping their usual 1,710-cube V-12 Allisons, the Arfons brothers chose the more powerful 1,650 cid Rolls-Royce Merlin engine to power GM #11. The Merlin V-1650, powerplant for most versions of the P-51 Mustang, the later P-40 Warhawk, and many of the RAF's warplanes, was built in the US by Packard during WWII. This car likely ran an Allison V-1710 as well. In interviews, Arfons said this (GM #11) was his favorite aircraft-engined ride. - RT | Set Top Speed at 1957 NHRA Nationals at 152.54 mph. - Bob Frey |

Notes: Team aka Harryman, Brown & Frank. Made cover of 5/31/58 Drag News, caption claiming car/driver held gas record (set earlier) of 157.61. Brown died sorting out the Scrima-Adams-Smith dragster at Lions in September 1959. - RT; The car debuted at San Fernando on Feb. 16, setting a track record 147.54 mph. The next week at Lions, it turned 149.75 mph. Lions and San Fernando were offering substantial prize money for the first gas dragster to go over 150. Brown, only 19 years old, was the first to do it, hitting 152.28 mph at San Fernando on Mar. 2. Brown was on a roll as he then broke that mark by going 157.61 mph at San Fernando two weeks later. Notes: "Jet Car" Bob Smith was severely burned in a gas dragster crash at Green Valley Raceway (Fort Worth, TEx.) in late August, as reported in the 8/27/68 Milwaukee Journal. Smith was a familiar name to Wisconsin drag racing fans, having crashed three times in the Milwaukee area, destroying two jet dragsters, in the five years prior to his Texas accident. The resilient Smith was back in the driver seat for the '68 season. - RT |

Notes: Mickey Brown was THE MAN in the gas dragster realm in 1958. It was commonly thought that it wouldn't be possible for a gas dragster to go 150 mph. But if it did happen, Brown was the odds-on favorite to be the one to crack the 150 barrier. He kept inching closer and closer. On Feb. 16 at San Fernando, he set a track record with 147.54 mph. The next week at Lions, he ran 149.75 mph. Oh, so close. On Mar. 2 at San Fernando, he did it-being the first to pilot a gas dragster over 150 mph. He set a world record of 152.28 mph. What had previously been thought an impossible barrier for gas dragsters, he then began running regularly. Two weeks afterward, he upped his world mark at San Fernando to 157.61 mph. A week after that, he set a track record 151.00 mph. On Mar. 30 at San Fernando on Mar. 30, he got Top Eliminator with a 150.75 mph run. He got an identical speed of 150.75 mph in a Top Eliminator win at San Fernando on June 15. The 150 mph barrier was no longer a barrier, and other gas dragsters began running in the 150s, too. But Mickey Brown had been the first to lead the way. He got Low ET at the 2-day event at Chandler Associated Drag Strip in Arizona with a 10.26 clocking. In the first half of the '58 season, Mickey owned the gas dragster laurels. Much credit should go to Dick Harryman, the young Granada Hills engine builder, and Venice chassis builder Nye Frank. Notes: Gary Wood and Ron Colson teamed up on this gas dragster. It was unusual in that it used a rear suspension. Gary built the frame and fabricated a spring-shock system. The idea was to transfer the weight so that the rear end could act as a fulcrum instead of having the pinion climb the rear gear and causing wheelstands. Each rear shock had a load capacity of 1,000 lbs. The engine in the "Stiletto" was a '64 Chevy 327. A 3/5/8 stroker crank from Crankshaft Company brought the displacement up to 368. The rods were also from CSC, and the pistons were from JE. Isky supplied the cam. The blower manifold was from Weiand. John Reed set up the GMC 6/71 for the team, and a Hilborn two-holer injection unit was used. Gary also built the headers. The power was put to the ground by an Olds rear with 4.10 gears, and the car's weight was only 950 lbs. In June, Colson qualified #4 at Bristol for the NHRA Springnationals with an 8.64/177.51.; At Rockford on May 2, he ran 8.50 at 173 mph. At Cordova, on Aug. 26, he ran 8.733 at 183.28 mph. Notes: Jack and Bill Schultz had one of the quickest Top Gas cars going in the super-competitive class during '68. At the NHRA Winternationals, they qualified #3 in the sixteen-car field with a 7.73/194.80. A first-round 8.05/193.98 took care of Earl Poage's 8.08/166. In round two, Jack beat Monty Montgomery with a 7.74/182.54. He was quick on the lights in the semifinal with his 7.79/194.38, beating Billy Scott's quicker 7.77/192. In the final, he faced Gordon Collett. Jones slowed to an 8.04/193.96, which gave him the runner-up spot to Gordon's 7.88/187. The team then went to Las Vegas for the Stardust Open. It was an eight-car field, and Jones qualified #1 with a 7.81/194.38 (Top Speed). He improved to 7.80/193.74 in the opening round to beat Bill Smith, and in the semifinal, Tony Nancy fouled against him, so he advanced with a 7.94/159.85. He faced the "Freight Train" driven by Billy Scott in the final. The "Train" smoked the tires, and Jones set Low ET while winning with a 7.74/193.12 over Scott's 8.06/175. He got a big win on July 20 at Lions for the PDA Professional Dragster Championships. Jack beat the "Freight Train" in the final with a 7.57/199.10. To get into the final, he ran times of 7.51, 7.58, 7.63, and 7.70. Jack ran 7.60, no time, 7.66, and 7.64 to win Indy. On October 26, they were at Irwindale for a sixteen-car show. Jack set Low ET with a 7.55/200.88 in the second round over Phil Soares' ailing car. In the semifinals, a 7.63/201.34 beat the "Gas House Gang's" 7.88/191. Jack won the show with a final round 7.68/202.70 (Top Speed) over Don Hampton's 7.77/189. The team was back at Irwindale on December 8 for an eight-car show. Jack qualified #2 with a 7.66, and in the first round, he beat the "Gaslight" with a 7.74/192.30. In the semifinal, he stayed consistent with a 7.74/196.06 over Soares' 7.93/190. He eased to an 8.77 victory when Bob Muravez crossed the centerline in the final. |
