Notes: While his brother ran in the fuel classes with his dragster, Ed ran in the gas dragster classes. One of his first successful outings in 1958 was at a 4-state event at Helena Drag Strip in Alabama. He took a TE win with 10.48 at 134.12 mph. A month later, he took another TE victory at Amelia Earhart Field with 10.7 at 145.61 mph. At Brooksville Airport on Nov. 9, he turned 10.62 at 138.460 mph. On Nov. 23 at Brooksville, he won Top Eliminator with 10.60 at 128.591 mph. He switched out his '55 Buick motor for a Chrysler engine for the race at Brooksville on Dec. 14, taking the A/D class with 10.87 at 145.161 mph. Photo: George Klass Collection - MB |

Notes: Texas ET Record. Hill's dragster was a very light 1075 pounds. He attended the NHRA National Championships at Oklahoma City, but newspapers didn't report his results. But when he returned to Texas, he emerged with successive wins that marked him as a force to be reckoned with. At the Texas State Championships at Caddo Mills on Sep. 6-7, he was runner-up to Jack Moss's twin Chevy-engined dragster in the finals for the A/D class. His best time of the meet was an impressive 9.95 seconds. On Oct. 5 at Freeway Drag Strip in Houston, he took top eliminator with 135 mph. He also got low ET of the meet. He repeated his top eliminator victory at Freeway Drag Strip on Oct. 19. He also set a new track record for A gas dragsters with 9.93 at 139.75 mph. In the first round of top eliminator, he beat Rodney Singer's blown Cad-engined dragster with 9.96 at 138 mph. He beat Linn Huit's Chrysler dragster in the next round with 10.07 at 136.36 mph. With his record-setting run, he beat J. F. Threadgill's Olds-engined A/FD in the top eliminator finals. He took a top eliminator win for the third consecutive time at Freeway Drag Strip on Nov. 9. He also clocked an unofficial 9.82-second run. En route to his TE win, he beat Mackey & Veselka (134.93 mph), Singer & Canton's blown Cad dragster (10.24 at 139.75 mph), and the final against Harold Stiefel's Pontiac dragster (10.19 at 135.95 mph). Afterward, Hill asked permission to make a single run and tied the strip's gas dragster record with 145.39 mph. (Photo: "Early drag racing photos," p.53, Jalopy Journal, The H.A.M.B. - MB |

Notes: Runner-Up in first race at Tulsa ever for Osborn, Midwest Top Gas Circuit. Won Midwest Gas Dragster Championship in Omaha in 1969. Ran 7.74 at Indy Nationals and 7.57 at NHRA World Finals (Dallas) 1969. Bill Beaman was the chassis builder. He was a local Tulsa guy who now, I believe, lives somewhere in Missouri. Even though the cars were being built in his home garage, his construction techniques and welding skills were first-class. It's a shame he didn't pursue it full-time: he could have become as noted as Woody Gilmore, Don Long, and some of the other major chassis builders of the period. Creitz & Greer and Moritz & McClintock were some of the others he built cars for. John Osborn died in a funny car crash in 1978, driving for Dick Moritz. |

Notes: After beginning the season running a '32 Ford with a blown Chrysler engine, Scott built a twin engined dragster sporting two blown Chrysler Hemis. It was finished in May. At Helena Drag Strip in Alabama, he set a new state record for AA/D of 166 mph on June 5. In early June at Birmingham he turned 174 mph. On June 26 at Lassiter Mountain Drag Strip, he set a new track record with an ET of 9.2 seconds. By September, newspapers were reporting that he had turned 190 mph, but that was probably advertising hyperbole. Photo: Columbus Enquirer, Sep. 30, 1960 - MB |

Notes: He raced at all 4 NHRA events in 1969. He ran 7.71/198.67 at Pomona, 7.74 at Springnationals in Dallas, 7.63 at Indy Nationals, and 7.55 at the World Finals (Dallas). 1969 NHRA Division 4 Top Gas Champion. Ray qualified #15 in the sixteen-car field at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.81/194.38. In the opening round, his 7.71/198.60 lost to Earl Poage's 7.64/192. | I raced my own AA/GD along with the Moritz & Lundy car and helped to work on it. It was an R&B (Dennis Rollain and John Buttera) chassis out of Wisconsin before Buttera went to the Left Coast and added the "Lil'" moniker. It, like mine, was also a direct drive car (no 3-speed transmission). Thanks, Bill, for putting out such a great website! - Connell R. Miller |

Notes: Rosberg was in Las Vegas in February for the Stardust National Open. It was an eight-car show, and he lasted until the semifinal before losing to eventual winner Don Enriquez. On March 9, he was at OCIR for an eight-car show. His 7.89/189.06 qualified #6, but in the opening round, he lost to Bob Muravez in the "Freight Train." The following week (March 16), he went to Riverside for the HRM Championships. The eight-car field had a 7.77 "bump," and Dick failed to qualify. He was back at OCIR on May 10, where his 7.65 qualified #3 in the eight-car field. Muravez blew one of his engines in the first round against him, so Rosberg advanced with a 7.99/190.66. In the semifinal, his 7.72/198.66 lost to Walt Rhoades' 7.74/198. Lions held an eight-car show at the end of the month, and Rosberg qualified #6 with a 7.72. A slightly better 7.70/193.54 in the first round fell to Norm Wilcox's 7.56/191. From there, it was back to OCIR on June 7. Dick qualified #1, and as only seven cars showed, he got the "odd-lot" solo in round one. In the semifinal, he advanced with a 7.79/187.10 when Denny McCarrell fouled. He faced Dave Russell in the final, and he fouled away a 7.73/192.30 while Russell ran an easy 8.41128 for the victory. At Dallas, for the NHRA Springnationals, Dick's 7.81/191.48 qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen car field. He improved to 7.72/191.48 in the first round that advanced over a fouling Jack Mitchell. In round two, he lost to Phil Hobbs. Dick ran 7.63 at the Indy Nationals. |

Notes: Cyr & Hopper raced gas dragsters, then went to fuel, then returned to gas during the 1959 season, per the 4/11/59 Drag News. In that issue, with a cover headline shouting "158.75 ON GAS - CYR," it was reported that his Five Cycle Special set a new gas record at Long Beach: 9.61/158.75. We have a previously entered but unattributed 9.51/160.14. Was that on fuel or later in the year on gas? - RT; Photo: "'50s Drags in Color," Pat Ganahl's Rod & Custom website - MB |

Notes: After Joe Tucci was paralyzed following the mid-summer accident at Petersburg, VA, Bilbow built a new dragster using Tucci's motor from the mangled old race car. Bilbow took over the driving duties, but Tucci, who used a wheelchair, did his tuning. In one of Bilbow's first outings at York U.S. 30 on Sep. 10, he clocked 9.27 at 163.636 mph. Two weeks later, at York, he got Top Eliminator with 9.18 at 166.66 mph as one of the country's top ten gas dragsters, Bilbow and Tucci decided to take the dragster out to Southern California for a few weeks. They raced at Colton, Fontana, and Lions. At Fontana, Bilbow set a strip Top Speed record of 173.74 mph at 9.31, their most successful run on the tour. Photo: George Klass Collection - MB |

He was runner-up to Billy Scott at San Fernando on May 1 where his 8.27/189.06 lost to Scott's 8.31/189. Amyx fatally injured in crash at Lions May 1966. It happened in qualifying for the eight-car show on May 21. The engine let go and Harrell crashed hard. He was taken to the hospital and was originally thought to be OK with minor injuries. But shortly after, he died of a skull fracture. He was 33 years old. |

Notes: Danny was at Fontana on March 21. He had the only gas-powered car there, and he ran warm-up runs of 8.85/184.04 and 8.83/184.80. A third run netted him an 8.77/185.18. Since the TF field was short, he agreed to run TF. In the first round, he cut a good light, and his 8.82/185.18 held of Gene Mooneyham's car at a better 8.77/192.30. In the semi-final, his 8.73/184.80 lost to eventual winner Don Moody's 8.79/193. Car name from 1964 NHRA Winternationals entry list. |
