Notes: The Twisters car club of Vista built this dragster, probably driven primarily by Don Bennett in 1957 and early 1958. Its first outing may have been on Sep. 17 at San Gabriel Valley Drag Strip where it turned 128.18 mph. It had a couple of outings at Santa Ana, taking Top Eliminator on Dec. 1. On Dec. 29 at the Perryville Airstrip in Arizona, the dragster set a new track record in B/OG class with 128.02 mph. This was a portent of good things to come in 1958. Notes: This "rail job" had reportedly been built in just six hours. On Aug. 24, he set a new track record for cars at Tidelands Circuit drag strip of 104.65 mph. The Tidelands Circuit was a road course but began running drag races on the straightway in mid-August. On Aug. 31 at Tidelands, Tony Renna of Huntington Park tied Hardcastle's track record of 104.65 mph in his '32 Ford. Notes: Twenty-one cars attempted to qualify for an eight-car show at OCIR on May 10, Unfortunately, Russell's best of 7.75 was good for second alternate. Dave won over an eight-car field at OCIR on June 7. He set Low ET in the semifinals with a 7.70/193.12 that beat Don Hampton's 8.01/189. In the final, he ran low qualifier Dick Rosberg, but Rosberg fouled so Dave eased to an 8.41/128.20 for the victory. |

Notes: 142" SPE chassis. This is Big Tom Larkin (the older one). Larkin started the season at Lions for an eight-car show on Jan 7. He qualified #1 with a 7.90 and ran a best of 7.88 in eliminations on his way to a final round meeting with Norm Wilcox. Tommy took the victory with a 7.91. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, Larkin qualified #5 with an 8.00/189.86. The car weighed in at 1,160 lbs. He improved to a 7.97/176.12 in the first round, to beat Bill Smith in the "Otie's Speed Shop" car, but an even better 7.96/189.06 in round two lost to Rich Rogers' Low ET of the meet blast of 7.86/192. On March 19, Larkin was at Irwindale for another eight-car show. His 7.93 qualified #1, but he fouled in the first round. He was at Riverside for the HRM Championships in April. In the first round his 7.98/174.41 beat Bob Dodge and in round two a 7.92/189.06 got around Larry Bowers' 8.05/193. Both he and Billy Scott ran 7.93 (Larkin at 189.06) in the semifinals, but Scott got to the finish line first. In a June '67 Drag News there's an ad for SPE claiming that Tom Larkin set the NHRA Top Gas record at 7.72 using their chassis. - RH |

On Apr. 24 at Eagle Mountain National Guard Base, Horn took top eliminator with 157 mph. At Caddo Mills on May 8, Horn took top gas eliminator with 9.04 at 156.00 mph. He took top gas eliminator at Caddo Mills again on June 5 with 9.14 at 161.87 mph. That was a Texas state record for gas dragsters. Notes: Three college students teamed together to field what they hoped was a promising dragster. Gary Boerman supplied the Cad engine from his 33 Ford A/A, while young Jerry Adams supplied a '55 dragster chassis. Allan Rordorf managed as crew chief. They debuted at Santa Maria on Jan. 4, clocking 130.48 mph at 11.00. On Mar. 9, they towed the car to Madera, but misfortune befell them in a big way. The LaSalle rear end gave out. They got in one more good race at San Luis Obispo, winning Top Eliminator on Apr. 20 before trying again at Madera. But bad luck really befell them as they blew the Cad engine.
