Notes: Sidestepping their usual 1,710-cube V-12 Allisons, the Arfons brothers chose the more powerful 1,650 cid Rolls-Royce Merlin engine to power GM #11. The Merlin V-1650, powerplant for most versions of the P-51 Mustang, the later P-40 Warhawk, and many of the RAF's warplanes, was built in the US by Packard during WWII. This car likely ran an Allison V-1710 as well. In interviews, Arfons said this (GM #11) was his favorite aircraft-engined ride. - RT | Set Top Speed at 1957 NHRA Nationals at 152.54 mph. - Bob Frey |

Notes: Poole ran in the A Open class at Cordova in 1956, but research was unable to find what kind of vehicle he was using. But he brought out a blown Chrysler-powered dragster using five carburetors in 1957. At Cordova on Mar. 31, he set a track record 145.631 mph on alcohol. He thought if he used nitro, he might be able to break the world mark of 166 mph. He tried to break the world record on Apr. 7 but came up short. That was his last try before entering the army. He came home on furlough for another try at the world record on June 30, again breaking the track record but short of the world record. After getting out of the army in 1959, he tried racing again at Cordova but kept breaking parts. Photo: Quad-City Times, July 7, 1957 - MB | Listing on gas for now. |

Notes: Algon-injected 461" Olds in a light 92" owner-built chassis. This car, photographed in late '58, was featured in the March '59 issue of Hot Rod. The article quoted unattributed times of 9.48/150.0. Cheatham was a favorite to take Top Eliminator honors at the '58 NHRA Nationals at Oklahoma City but narrowly lost the A/D class semifinal to eventual Top Eliminator Cyr & Hopper. He was killed six months later in a crash at the March Meet at Bakersfield when his rail somersaulted in the traps after striking a marker barrel. - RT Oklahoma City, Okla. 9/58 (NHRA Nationals); Cheatham proved a formidable opponent throughout the season. On Feb. 16 at Kingdon, he ran 145.17 mph. On Apr. 27 at Half Moon Bay, he took TE with 136.36 mph. He set a track record in B Open Gas at Little Bonneville in San Jose of 137 mph on May 4. He turned 134 mph at Half Moon Bay on May 11. On June 1 at Kingdon, he ran 136.88 mph. He took TE at Little Bonneville on June 15 with 135.35 mph. He took another TE victory at Half Moon Bay on July 13 with 141.95 mph. He set another strip record at Little Bonneville and won TE honors with 141.5 mph. On Aug. 10 at Half Moon Bay, he set a world record with 9.56 at 143.31 mph. A week later, at Little Bonneville, he upped the track record to 142.85 mph. On Aug. 24, he set an impressive new world record of 9.48 at a mind-blowing 150.50 mph. Those marks and wins set the stage for a very successful showing at the national championships at Oklahoma City, where he was runner-up in the dragster eliminations to winner Ted Cyr. En route to his second-place finish, he beat Art Arfons' Green Monster, Ralph Gonzalez, and Jack Moss. He registered the second fastest time ever on gas with a 9.3 run. Returning from Oklahoma, he entered a 2-day race on Sep. 6/7 at Camp White in Oregon, clocking 9.97 at 144.46 mph. At Half Moon Bay on Sep. 28, he ran 147.29 mph. On Oct. 12 at Half Moon Bay, he registered another good showing with 9.40. He finished the season with wins at Kingdon in B Open Gas on Nov. 2 with 143.31 mph and Dec. 7 with 9.8 at 145.89 mph. Notes: On the drawing boards for three years and in construction for six months, this dual-engined $8,000 dragster debuted at Lions with Fritz Voigt driving on June 21. Kenny Droesbeck from Norwalk, a partner with Paul Nicolini in the Sidewinder dragster, was a partner in the operation. Voigt and Mickey Thompson shared driving duties until they towed it back east with the intention of racing at the U.S. Nationals. En route, they stopped at Bonneville Salt Flats, where Thompson ran 294 mph, becoming the fastest living American driver. After Bonneville, they returned to California, never getting to the Nationals. His appetite whetted for land speed racing, Mickey returned to begin work on his 4-engine Challenger I. Before going to the Salt Flats, Mickey made some good runs in his dual-engine dragster. The day after the car's debut at Lions, Mickey drove at San Fernando on June 22, clocking 10.45 at 147.29 mph. On July 6 at Pomona, Mickey turned 9.80 at 146.10 mph. At San Gabriel Valley Drag Strip on July 20, Mickey got Top Eliminator, clocking best times of 10.04 and 144.92 mph. In September, he began work on Challenger I. Photo: Early Drag Racing Photos, Jalopy Journal, The H.A.M.B., p. 8 - MB |

Notes: On the drawing boards for three years and in construction for six months, this dual-engined, four-wheel-drive $8,000 dragster debuted at Lions with Fritz Voigt driving on June 21. He ran an impressive 9.93 and 149.50 mph. His appetite wetted for land speed racing, Mickey returned to begin work on his 4-engine Challenger I. Before going to the Salt Flats, Mickey made some good runs in his dual-engine dragster. The day after the car's debut at Lions, Mickey and Voigt both drove at San Fernando on June 22, Voigt clocking the best with 10.37 at 148.51 mph. On Aug. 2 at Lions, the last drag race before their departure east, Voigt drove but lost in the first round of eliminations. After Bonneville, they returned to California and focused attention on building Challenger I. Photo: George Klass Collection - MB |

Notes: After racing for seven years and generally getting runner-up slots at the big meets, Moss seriously considered giving up racing after a second runner-up at the NHRA National Championships at Detroit Dragway. He ran 9.74 at 165.44 mph to lose to Rodney Singer. Earlier in the year, he did well enough at smaller events. At Roswell, New Mexico, on Apr. 12, he got top eliminator with his twin 354-inch Chevies with 9.96 at 146.57 mph. At Wichita Falls on May 31, he got the top speed with 153 mph, but got runner-up in the top eliminator finals when he blew one of his engines. Notes: Butters was at San Gabriel on December 28 with the 341 Chrysler-powered car. He made several high 140 mph runs, with the best being 10.06/148.51. Those times were the best of the meet. He later blew second gear, ran it through with high gear only, and still ran 10.29/146.10. Early Chrysler hemi with Potvin (front-mounted) blower. Bill Butters and Don Porterfield ran a succession of racecars under the Groh's Texaco banner (Rivera, Calif.) throughout the Fifties. Unknown whether this car ran gas or fuel. Butters later partnered with Don Gerard to race dragsters in the Seventies. - RT; Photo: George Klass Collection - MB |

GM5 was, nowever RWD, so the NHRA quote regarding 4WD may be inaccurate. Notes: The team of Sampson, Dillon, and Mudersbach spent three weeks building a completely new dragster after setting a new world record in Sampson's old dragster at Perryville on Apr. 14. Sampson was the driver, Dillon, the engine builder, and Mudersbach built the chassis. They got a brand new '57 Olds engine from Bill Money and spent $1,000 turning it into a racing engine. The new car was ready for its first outing at Perryville on June 2. It set a new A Open Gas national record of 140.61 mph. In its first outing, it broke that record with a run of 141.78 mph. With impressive times, they towed to Long Beach Drag Strip for the Drag News Invitational. They set a new track and world record for unblown dragsters with 10.34 and 141.95 mph. They also copped Top Eliminator at the big event. It seemed that every time they ran, they set new national marks. At Perryville, on July 7, they upped the world record to 145.16 mph. Then, on Aug. 4 at Perryville, they set a new official world record of 147.53 mph. At the 2-day ATAA regional championships at Lions Drag Strip on July 20/21, he set a new national record of 9.935. All this success in the new dragster set them up for even greater success at the NHRA Nationals at Oklahoma City in September. They won Top Eliminator at the 1957 NHRA Nationals at Oklahoma City over LeRoy Mackey from Corpus Christi, TX, driving an A/MR. They turned 10.42 at 141.50 mph. In addition to the trophies, they won a '57 f.i. Chevy engine, washing machine, and a $350 cam. Buddy Sampson took the Chevy engine and left the trio to go out on his own. In the months after the Nationals win, Dillon and Mudersbach competed with the dragster in Arizona and California. Notes: When this gas dragster began having success, reporters in Drag News referred to the owners of this dragster just by their first names (even in article titles and advertisements). For instance, when they raced at Minnesota Dragways on Oct. 2, the title read "Bud, Don & John set low E.T. of meet." It wasn't until a few months later that it became more known as The Guzler. At Minnesota Dragways on Aug. 14, they lost a match against The Big Wheel dragster, their best run being 9.39 at 157 mph. At the Oct. 2 race at Minnesota Dragways when they got the meet's low ET, they ran 9.36 at 161.87 mph. They also recorded a 175 mph run at Minnesota, giving notice that they were on the rise. They became the first gas dragster to go over 180 mph when they turned 181.467 mph at Oswego on Oct. 16. This got them national notice and they were invited to run at Lions when they scheduled a winter vacation trip to California. En route to California, they made a stop at Green Valley Drag Strip on Nov. 6, where they won the A/GD class and took top eliminator with 9.00 at 163.59 mph. In the process, they beat Jimmy Nix, who seemed unbeatable prior to their win. They got to California, but they much-ballyhooed showing at Lions was rained out on Nov. 12. They towed over to San Fernando for a Nov. 13 race, but were beaten by Tommy Ivo when the clutch blew and driver Kranenberg suffered minor leg injuries. They made a showing at Lions on Nov. 19 after the rained-out race, but had trouble getting use to the strip. They had to return home to Illinois after that race. Notes: Right out of the gate, this dragster looked to be something special. It made a good showing at the U.S. Nationals in 1958 at Oklahoma City. In its first outing in '59 at Santa Ana, it clocked 163.63 mph in 9.61, its fastest run of the season. On Feb. 15 at Santa Ana, Nelson took Top Eliminator. On Mar. 8 at San Gabriel, Nelson took Top Eliminator and set track records with 9.70 and 149.25 mph. On Apr. 5 at San Gabriel, it set a strip speed record with 155.97 mph. In early July at Santa Ana, Nelson was seriously injured when he crashed. While he recovered, Dode Martin took over driving duties. He had driven a time or two before, but Nelson had been the primary driver before the crash. At Oklahoma City in August, Martin won top gas eliminator at the Mar-Car 1,000-Foot Invitational, winning a $500 savings bond. Dode drove at the Detroit National Championships, setting a national time mark at 9.03. The success of this original Dragmaster dragster brought success to Martin and Nelson as other racers wanted these well-built chassis. They began building them for the growing drag racing community. Notes: Mickey Brown, only 21 years old at the start of the season, was a drag racer on the rise. In '58, he became the first man to go over 150 MPH in a gas dragster. In 1959 he wracked up class wins, TE victories, and set strip and national records racing at tracks in Southern California. May was an especially fruitful month. On May 3 at Santa Maria, he set a strip Top Speed record of 163.63 mph. On May 9 at Lions, he set a strip and national Drag News 1320 speed record of 161.29 mph. Three weeks later, at Lions on May 30, he improved that national record mark with a 161.87 mph clocking. It was evident that young Mickey was an ascending star in the gas dragster ranks. But that came to an abrupt end for the young man on Sep. 12. On that fateful day, Ronnie Scrima and Mort Smith were testing a new short wheelbase (93") dragster at Lions. They had dropped Gene Adams's Oldsmobile engine in the car but were having a hard time getting it down the track. Mickey Brown had left his own Olds-powered dragster at home, and he offered to see if he could drive the car. About 100 feet from the starting line, he lost control and flipped upside down, suffering fatal injuries because his head got outside the confines of the roll bar. Racers remembered him as a kind of wild but fun-loving kid. Photo: "'50s Drags in Color," Pat Ganahl's Rod & Custom website - MB |

Notes: This gas dragster confined its racing to Santa Maria Drag Strip. The El Coyote Racing Team consisted of Grider, owner Skip Schuyler, Tony Domingos, and Ed Schultz. On Apr. 5, it set a new track record 10.27 at 152.54 mph. On May 3, it tied for Top Eliminator with an excellent Top Speed for a gas dragster of 163.52 mph. On July 5, it copped Top Eliminator with a 159.29 mph run. Grider teamed up with two others to field their own dragster at the end of the 1959 season, debuting a Chassis Research dragster at Santa Maria on Nov. 1. The other owners in the dragster were Ed Schultz and Taylor. They turned a promising 10.30 at 157.89 mph. Photo: Santa Maria Times, Apr. 6, 1959 - MB |
