Notes: After beginning the season running a '32 Ford with a blown Chrysler engine, Scott built a twin engined dragster sporting two blown Chrysler Hemis. It was finished in May. At Helena Drag Strip in Alabama, he set a new state record for AA/D of 166 mph on June 5. In early June at Birmingham he turned 174 mph. On June 26 at Lassiter Mountain Drag Strip, he set a new track record with an ET of 9.2 seconds. By September, newspapers were reporting that he had turned 190 mph, but that was probably advertising hyperbole. Photo: Columbus Enquirer, Sep. 30, 1960 - MB |

Notes: Fritz Voigt had Glen Pingry drive his dragster in 1955. They mostly ran at Colton and Pomona in the Open Gas class. He ran 128.57 mph at Colton on Mar. 13. He may have run on fuel once at Pomona when they took Top Eliminator on Apr. 10 with a 137.82 mph clocking. They also ran 134.93 mph at Morrow Drag Strip in Colton on Apr. 3, which might have also been on fuel. He really had the car running well by the time of the U.S. Nationals at Great Bend in October. He won the Open Gas class with a speed of 129.95 mph and established a new national record in the class of 132.74 mph. Photo: San Bernardino County Sun, Mar. 27, 1955 - MB |

Notes: After Joe Tucci was paralyzed following the mid-summer accident at Petersburg, VA, Bilbow built a new dragster using Tucci's motor from the mangled old race car. Bilbow took over the driving duties, but Tucci, who used a wheelchair, did his tuning. In one of Bilbow's first outings at York U.S. 30 on Sep. 10, he clocked 9.27 at 163.636 mph. Two weeks later, at York, he got Top Eliminator with 9.18 at 166.66 mph as one of the country's top ten gas dragsters, Bilbow and Tucci decided to take the dragster out to Southern California for a few weeks. They raced at Colton, Fontana, and Lions. At Fontana, Bilbow set a strip Top Speed record of 173.74 mph at 9.31, their most successful run on the tour. Photo: George Klass Collection - MB |

Notes: Set both ends of the record at the start of NHRA National Record certification: Atco, NJ, 7/13/60 at 9.066/168.85.; He regularly raced at York U.S. 30-almost weekly except for occasional forays elsewhere. At York, on June 4, he turned 8.95 at 169.00 mph. The following week at York, he took Top Eliminator at 169.811 mph with a national record time of 8.84. This accomplishment and beating Tommy Ivo at a match race at York on July 3 with a time of 8.87 at 169.00 mph brought him a measure of national recognition. Minnesota Dragways paid him to appear to race against Bruce Norman and the Big Wheel dragster on July 31. A week later, at Petersburg Airport in Virginia, Tucci was racing the A/Comp Austin Bantam coupe of the Lickliter Brothers. Tucci took the win, but things went awry with his opponent's vehicle behind him. A clutch explosion started several things happening that resulted in the coupe being unable to steer or stop. It plowed into the rear of Tucci's slowing car. Tucci suffered severe spinal injuries, paralyzing him from the waist down. Although confined to a wheelchair, Bilbow built another dragster that he drove with Tucci serving as his crew chief. At the end of the year, they took the new dragster on a West Coast barnstorming tour. Photo: George Klass Collection - MB |

Notes: This dragster never veered far from Colton's track, and they were a lock on either winning Top Eliminator or their class in the '60 season. They ran in January and February as the Adriance-Racer Brown gas dragster, but after that, news reports dropped the Racer Brown name from their name. They were just the Adriance Appliance Special. In their first outing of the season at Colton on January 24, they took a TE win and clocked an unbelievable 173.07 mph. To satisfy the doubters, Adriance used pump gas supplied by the strip. They never again topped 170 mph, but Colton accepted their 173.07 as the strip gas record for more than a year. LeChien said that his 173 run sure felt faster than usual. On February 14, they took a TE win and turned best times of 9.75 and 162.17 mph. On March 27, he ran 9.53 at 162.00 mph. On April 10, he got a TE victory with 159.85 mph. On one of their rare outings at another strip, they went to San Fernando on April 10 and turned 9.78 at 157.42 mph. On May 1, he took a Top Eliminator victory at San Fernando with 9.42 at 159.27 mph. In the latter part of the year, LeChien stopped driving for Adriance and went with another dragster. Research hasn't conclusively proved when that happened, but Lee Drake was Adriance's driver on November 27 at Colton when he turned 9.93 at 157.34 mph. Earlier, Adriance took a class win at Colton on August 6 with 161.79 mph. On September 5 at Colton, they ran 9.82 with a best speed of 152.80 mph. On September 10, the clocking at Colton was 10.19 at 152.06 mph. These slower times in late August and September could indicate LeChien wasn't driving those times. Notes: Sampson replaced Charley Storrr's Olds engine that he ran at the beginning of the 1957 season with a fuel injected Olds engine from Joe Dillon. Dillon joined Sampson and Mudersbach and the dragster had immediate phenomenal success in Sampson's old car. They set a new national record in the A Open Gas class. After the race at Perryville on Apr. 14, they began work on building a completely new dragster that would bring them even more national recognition. Photo: Arizona Republic, Sep. 4, 1955 - MB |

Notes: After flipping over at the end of a run in Dec. 1954 at Colton, the car was repaired. The car's first outing was at Pomona on Feb. 6, copping Top Eliminator. The following week, again at Pomona, it won the dragster class. It is unclear from newspaper articles if the Arizaga brothers from El Monte were still involved, as their Merc engine was replaced by Alex Xydias's blown Ardun engine at one point in the season. By July, Lyle Arizaga was racing a B/FD, and brother Joe was racing a competition coupe. Photo: Jalopy Journal, H.A.M.B., "Early Drag Racing Photos," June 21, 2021 entry - MB |

Notes: This innovative dragster could be a poster child for 1950s homemade drag racing engineering. But as such, it had its ups and downs, being difficult to handle and inconsistent. It sported hydraulic front end suspension and a home-built centrifugal blower pumping into a 6/2 manifold converted to fuel injection.
