Notes: After the disastrous wreck at Oklahoma City in late August 1959, Johansen rebuilt the twin-engine dragster. Glen Ward had recovered from injuries sustained in that wreck, and Johansen asked him to be his driver again for 1960. Ward jumped back in the driver's seat when the new car debuted at the March Meet at Bakersfield. The car had plenty of first-time-out bugs, and Ward had to shut it off when racing Bob's Muffler's dragster in eliminations. Johansen got it all sorted out the following week in time for Ward to take runner-up to Lefty Mudersbach in the top eliminator finals at Lions on Mar. 13. This was despite having throttle troubles all day long. His best time was in the 5th round of eliminations against Langford-Brown-Leffler-Loukas when he ran 9.55 at 152.28 mph. The following week at Lions on Mar. 20, he beat Don Prudhomme in the 4th round with a new Drag News 1320 national record of 8.85 seconds. He backed it up in the final round of eliminations with an 8.91 but lost to Glen Stokey. The new dragster was back in the business of breaking records, just like its predecessor. The following week at Lions on Mar. 27, he took top eliminator with 9.46 at 164.83 mph and a class win with a faster 8.94 at 168.22 mph. In the top eliminator eliminations, he beat a stellar field, including Don Prudhomme, Albertson Olds, and Tommy Ivo. The following week, they towed the car up to Santa Maria for a 2-day meet on Apr. 2/3. Ward took top eliminator and set a new track record with 9.17 at 169.81 mph. The following week, he was back at Lions on Apr. 10, where he got runner-up in top eliminator to Lefty Mudersbach. His best time came in a round against Glen Stokey when he ran 9.02 at 168.86 mph. At the new Deer Valley Dragway in Phoenix, Ward set a new Drag News 1320 record with 177.86 mph. He lost in the first round of gas eliminations to Dode Martin, driving the Dragmaster with a losing 9.26 at 163.84 mph when he experienced trouble getting off the starting line. Ward's final time driving the dragster came on May 14 at Lions when he won top eliminator with 9.33 at 168.85 mph. Some unexplained health problems caused the dragster to remain inactive for several weeks. Johansen went with Jack Chrisman as the driver for the "ailing" Glen Ward for a race at Lions on July 2. He stayed with Chrisman for the rest of the season. Photo: Drag Cars in Motion Picture Thread, p. 1909, in Jalopy Journal, The H.A.M.B. -- MB |

Notes: Collett qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. His 7.92/190.66 just made the show. In the opening round, he improved to 7.87/191.08 to defeat Gary Cochran. Rico Paris fouled against him in round two, and Gordon made an easy 11.02/85.87 run to advance. Norm Wilcox lost fire in the semifinal, and Collett soloed at 12.96/69.66. He faced Jack Jones in the final. Jones had been running steady 7.7's, but he fell off to an 8.04/193 in the final that lost to Collett's 7.88/187.10. Gordon Won Top Gas Eliminator at the NHRA Winternationals in 1966, 1967, and 1968. |

Notes: In his search for a good driver, George Adriance got Chula Vista hair stylist Tony Vidrio to be his driver for the '61 season. His nickname was "Captain" or "Captain Video." It took him a while to get up to speed, but Tony proved capable. Colton was their track of choice for racing again in '61. He took a TE win at Colton on Feb. 26 with 10.52 at 150.75 mph. He notched another TE win on Apr. 9 with a better 9.19 at 163.04 mph. On June 24, he clocked 9.82 and 158.73 mph. On July 8, his best was 9.47 and 158.17 mph. A week later, they took Top Eliminator with 9.58 and 161.71 mph. On Aug. 8, he turned a very fast 8.95 at 160.00 mph. Proving that fast time was not a fluke, he turned 9.01 at 169.42 mph at a rare outing to northern California at Vaca Valley Raceway. The next day they raced at Cotati and took a TE victory with 9.62 at 156.75 mph. Back at Colton on Oct. 8, the "Captain" ran 9.60 at 161.29 mph. In the '60 and '61 seasons, George Adriance fielded a formidable gas dragster, but he never ventured too far from Colton, his favorite track, to compete. Photo: George Klass Collection - MB |

Notes: Walt qualified second at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.64/198.67 behind Mark Pieri's 7.57/201. Another 7.64 at 198.23 in the opening round beat Mike Snively's 7.70/193. In the second round, he fouled against Cliff Smith. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 at the Bakersfield March Meet. He then ran 7.45/200 in the first round over Jack Jones, and in round two, his 7.49/198.23 defeated Don Hampton. Rhoades got an easy pass in the semifinal, where Walt Stevens fouled against him. He faced Don Enriquez in the final, and there was no stopping the "Gas House Gang" as his 7.47/201.84 (Top Speed) got the victory. Shortly after that (March 16), he was at Riverside for the HRM Championships. This was an eight-car field, and his 7.75/200.00 (Top Speed) qualified #4. Art LaColst fouled against him in round one, and Walt advanced with a 7.97/156.52. In the semifinal, he and Jones had a great race that saw both drivers run 7.64 (Rhoades at 197.80), but Jack got the "win" light. He was at OCIR on May 10 for an eight-car show. A 7.65 qualified #4, and in round one, he ran 7.89/158.73 to advance when Norm Wilcox fouled. In the semifinal, Dick Rosberg's late 7.72/198 fell to his 7.74/198.66. He faced Jones in the final, and Jack caught an excellent light, and his 7.64/195 beat Walt's better 7.61/200. He also ran 7.65 at the Springnats in Dallas and 7.59/195.22 at the Indy Nationals. |

Notes: In the first half of the '62 season, they ran on gas but switched over to fuel with great success in August. Safford started the '57 season with a top gas eliminator win at the March Meet at Bakersfield with best times of 8.78 and 177.61 mph. At Fremont on May 27, he beat Tom Trefethen to take the #5 Mr. Eliminator title for gas dragsters with 8.73 at 177.16 mph. On June 16 at Lions, he got the gas Top Eliminator victory with 9.04 at 165.44 mph. He repeated that Lions TE win a week later with 9.10 at 168.85 mph. On July 22 at San Fernando, he took a top gas eliminator win with 9.23 at 171.87 mph. After that, they switched over to run fuel. Photo: George Klass Collection - MB |

Notes: Norm was at Lions for an eight-car show on March 18. He was debuting a new car and ran 7.81/196.50 to qualify first. A 7.86/196.92 advanced past a fouling Don Hampton in round one, while a 7.80/198.22 beat Walt Rhoades in the semifinals. In the final, he faced Billy Scott. Unfortunately, Norm took a little snooze and his 7.82 finished second best to Scott's 7.92. |

Notes: Per a feature story in the 11/62 issue of Popular Hot Rodding, this was a former Green Monster car, purchased from the Arfons brothers in 1959. This V-12 car featured the fabled 400-lb tug boat clutch. Based on his experiences with this 3,000-lb car, Pendleton designed his own Allison-powered slingshot from scratch and began campaigning it in 1961. The feature cited times of "169 mph. And ETs usually in the tens." - RT |

Notes: This beautiful enclosed dragster was built by the owners of Daddy's Auto Body in Burbank. They did it first class in every respect: chassis by Kent Fuller, upholstery by Tony Nancy, Buick engine specialist Max Balchowsky, and their own fiberglass body. Johnson, age 19, and Zeller, age 23, shared driving duties. They principally raced at San Fernando. Zeller set a new track record at San Fernando and drove to a TE victory on Mar. 23 at 132.54 mph. He broke that track record a week later with 137.20 mph. Tom McCourry later bought the dragster. Photo: George Klass Collection - MB |

Notes: The Ono Brothers were turning heads with their gas dragster on the UDRA circuit. They pulled in to Martin, Michigan, for a circuit race in June. Mits came off the trailer and ran 7.68/200.88. Rain canceled the race. They then went to Saginaw, Michigan, for the next UDRA race and once again came off the trailer with an eye-opening 7.62/201.34. Unfortunately, the team cracked a cylinder head on the run and was out of competition. They ran 7.661/199.94 at Indy. |

Notes: Ron was at Fremont on February 26, where he ran a 7.90. This was really good as he was running a Chevy, and few could keep up with the Hemis at this time. Colson was at St. Louis in June for the AHRA 1/8 Mile Springnationals. He exploded a supercharger Saturday, and in less than one hour, he rebuilt it and returned to win Top Gas on Sunday with a record 5.45. Ron qualified #26 at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals with an 8.08/187, but he lost to Walt Rhoades in the first round. The motor was a stroked 396.; At Cordova on May 7, he ran 8.01. A week later, at Oswego, he ran 8.11 at 197.89 mph. A week after, he ran 8.00 at 188 mph at Detroit Dragway. At the 14th World Series of Drag Racing at Cordova on August 25, several newspapers reported that he ran 6.892 in time trials, but that would have been more than a second under his times during the season. That looks very suspicious, but to further complicate matters, a gas dragster driven by George Smith from Kenner, Louisiana, was reported to have been clocked at 6.048. Very puzzling.
