Notes: Won Top Gas at 1969 Springnationals. Raced the car as Bob Muravez. The Floyd Lippencotte Jr. moniker was retired. Raced at all four NHRA national events in 1969. Ran 7.81 at Pomona, 7.51 at Springnationals (Dallas), 7.46 at Indy Nationals, 7.56 at World Finals (Dallas). Top Gas was fading in popularity in the late sixties. Cars like this made people stand up in the stands and root for their "driver." The "Freight Train" was a crowd favorite, and it brought some well-needed attention back to the class. Muravez was the first alternate at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with his 7.81/175.56. Bill Smith qualified eighth but broke and was unable to compete. Bob took his place in the field. In the opening round of eliminations, he fouled against Richard Rogers. On March 9, the "Freight Train" was at OCIR for an eight-car show. Unfortunately, his 8.04 failed to qualify for the all-seven second show. He did better the following weekend (March 16) at Riverside for the HRM Championships. It was another eight-car field, and his 7.73 qualified #3. He had a close race against Steve San Paolo in the first round that saw his 7.84 defeat Steve's 7.86. But the car lost fire on the line in the semifinal against Mike Snively. On May 10, OCIR held another Top Gas race. Twenty-one cars showed up to attempt to qualify for the eight-car show. Muravez ran 7.67/200.88 (Top Speed) to qualify #7. In round one, the front engine blew, and he lost to Dick Rosberg. He won the NHRA Division Seven race at Irwindale on May 24. Another win came at Dallas in mid-June for the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified #1 for the sixteen-car field with a 7.60/197.80. Ray Ruettiman fouled against him in the "Gopher State" car, and Bob eased it through with an 8.91 to advance. He improved to 7.51/200.44 (Top Speed) in the second round to beat Mark Pieri. In the semifinal, Rico Paris fell to Bob's 7.54/199.55. He faced Phil Hobbs in the final, and the "Freight Train" was not to be denied, as Muravez ran 7.54/198.67 for the victory over Phil's 7.68/189. Shortly after that (July 5), he went to Lions for an eight-car show. Bob set Low ET in qualifying with a 7.49, but he was shut off on the line with an oil leak in round one. |

Notes: Twenty-one cars attempted to qualify for an eight-car show at OCIR on May 10, Unfortunately, Russell's best of 7.75 was good for second alternate. Dave won over an eight-car field at OCIR on June 7. He set Low ET in the semifinals with a 7.70/193.12 that beat Don Hampton's 8.01/189. In the final, he ran low qualifier Dick Rosberg, but Rosberg fouled so Dave eased to an 8.41/128.20 for the victory. |

Notes: Walt qualified second at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.64/198.67 behind Mark Pieri's 7.57/201. Another 7.64 at 198.23 in the opening round beat Mike Snively's 7.70/193. In the second round, he fouled against Cliff Smith. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 at the Bakersfield March Meet. He then ran 7.45/200 in the first round over Jack Jones, and in round two, his 7.49/198.23 defeated Don Hampton. Rhoades got an easy pass in the semifinal, where Walt Stevens fouled against him. He faced Don Enriquez in the final, and there was no stopping the "Gas House Gang" as his 7.47/201.84 (Top Speed) got the victory. Shortly after that (March 16), he was at Riverside for the HRM Championships. This was an eight-car field, and his 7.75/200.00 (Top Speed) qualified #4. Art LaColst fouled against him in round one, and Walt advanced with a 7.97/156.52. In the semifinal, he and Jones had a great race that saw both drivers run 7.64 (Rhoades at 197.80), but Jack got the "win" light. He was at OCIR on May 10 for an eight-car show. A 7.65 qualified #4, and in round one, he ran 7.89/158.73 to advance when Norm Wilcox fouled. In the semifinal, Dick Rosberg's late 7.72/198 fell to his 7.74/198.66. He faced Jones in the final, and Jack caught an excellent light, and his 7.64/195 beat Walt's better 7.61/200. He also ran 7.65 at the Springnats in Dallas and 7.59/195.22 at the Indy Nationals. |

Notes: Don Cain qualified #4 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.68/195.22. Only two Gas Dragsters ran 200 at this race, and he was one of them. He improved to 7.66/200 in the opening round of eliminations to defeat Gordie Craig's 7.85/161. A 7.69/200beat Richard Rogers in round two, but in the semifinal, his 7.66/200.48 lost to Cliff Smith's 7.62/194. In May, he won the NHRA Division Five run at Sioux City, where he stopped low qualifier Ron Braun in the final. Cain had run times of 7.93/195.64 and 7.85/183.66 to reach the final. At the NHRA Springnationals, held at Dallas International, his 7.73/199.11 qualified #10. He improved by a tenth in the first round, down to 7.63/196.93, but it wasn't enough to beat Don Enriquez's 7.56/194. On August 17, he was at Thunder Valley for an eight-car show. While he didn't reach the final round, he reset both ends of the track record in qualifying with a 7.89/191. Don raced at all NHRA events in 1969. Don ran 7.66 200.48 at Pomona, 7.63 at Springnationals in Dallas, 7.59 at Indy Nationals, and 7.50 at Beech Bend WCS. 1969 NHRA Division 5 Champion. |

Notes: Runner-Up in first race at Tulsa ever for Osborn, Midwest Top Gas Circuit. Won Midwest Gas Dragster Championship in Omaha in 1969. Ran 7.74 at Indy Nationals and 7.57 at NHRA World Finals (Dallas) 1969. Bill Beaman was the chassis builder. He was a local Tulsa guy who now, I believe, lives somewhere in Missouri. Even though the cars were being built in his home garage, his construction techniques and welding skills were first-class. It's a shame he didn't pursue it full-time: he could have become as noted as Woody Gilmore, Don Long, and some of the other major chassis builders of the period. Creitz & Greer and Moritz & McClintock were some of the others he built cars for. John Osborn died in a funny car crash in 1978, driving for Dick Moritz. |

Notes: Larry raced at all NHRA national events (except the World Finals) in 1969. He ran 7.71 at Pomona, 7.77 at Dallas, 7.58 at Indy, with best of 196.07 at Indy. Cliff Smith drove Larry Bowers' car to a runner-up finish at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Larry was driving the car at the Bakersfield March Meet, but he fouled against Bill Dunlap in the opening round. On May 10, he was at OCIR for an eight-car show, but he failed to beat the 7.73 "bump." Lions held another eight-car show at the end of the month. Bowers ran 7.60 to qualify #3. A 7.91 at only 143.08 advanced over George Cerny in the first round. In the semifinal, his 7.56/192.30 lost to eventual winner Jack Jones' 7.49/193. At Dallas for the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #14 with a 7.77/191.06. Unfortunately, he blew the crankshaft right out of the engine and could not run in eliminations. On July 27, he was at Carlsbad for the NHRA Division Seven race. He reset the NHRA TG record with a 7.49 in qualifying. He went on to win, stopping Bob Noice in the final. Shortly after that (August 2), he was at OCIR for an eight-car show. His 7.76 qualified #3, but he fouled away an even better 7.63/193.54 in the first round against Tom Toler. The NHRA Nationals had a 32 car field, and Bowers ran well. He qualified #3 with a 7.58/196.07. A 7.68/194.80 beat Steve Malise's 7.90 in the first round. In round two, he defeated Dick Rosberg with a 7.71/191.08. He fouled away a 7.60/193.96 against Noice in the third round. |

Notes: At the Bakersfield March Meet, Wilcox ran a solo 7.68/187.11 in the first round, but in the second, he fouled away a 7.66 against Walt Stevens. On March 16 he was at Riverside for the HRM Championships. He qualified #5 in the eight-car show forcing him to run low qualifier Mike Snively in the first round. His 7.89/188.67 lost to Snively's 7.77/190. OCIR held a race on May 10 that had 21 cars attempt to qualify for the eight-car show. Norm qualified on the "bump" with a 7.73. He rolled though the lights in the first round, and fouled against Walt Rhoades. Norm won over an eight-car field at Lions on July 5. He qualified #4 with a 7.62 and another 7.62/194.80 beat Rhoades in round one. In the semifinals, his 7.65/192.71 got around Rick Ramsey's 7.81/174. This put him in the final against Bob Noice. Bob had troubles and shut off on the line and Wilcox soloed to the victory with a 7.59/193.13. |

Notes: Uyehara was running well at the Sears Point Open race. He qualified #1 with a 7.68/194.60 and made it into the final before losing to Walt Rhoades. Dave was at OCIR for an eight-car show on May 10. There were 21 cars attempting to qualify and his 7.66/198.22 got him the #6 spot. Unfortunately, a 7.92/199.54 in the first round, lost to eventual winner Jack Jones' 7.90/191. |

In the opening round, his 7.71/198.60 lost to Earl Poage's 7.64/192. | I raced my own AA/GD along with the Moritz & Lundy car and helped to work on it. It was an R&B (Dennis Rollain and John Buttera) chassis out of Wisconsin before Buttera went to the Left Coast and added the "Lil'" moniker. It, like mine, was also a direct drive car (no 3-speed transmission). Thanks, Bill, for putting out such a great website! - Connell R. Miller |

Notes: Bill is Otie's son. Smith ran 7.73/178.21 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals to qualify #8. Unfortunately, he hurt some parts and was unable to run in eliminations allowing first alternate, Bob Muravez into the field. Bill had the "Otie's Special" for sale in Drag News in November. The ad stated that the car had run a best of 7.56/199.90. No price was given. |

Notes: At Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet, Don qualified well and in round one, his 7.75/188.28 beat Dave Uyehara. In the second round, he lost to the race's eventual winner Walt Rhoades. A week later (March 16), he failed to qualify for the eight-car field at Riverside for the HRM Championships. Don was at OCIR on May 10 for an eight-car show. He qualified #5 with a 7.65/187.50. Unfortunately, he fouled (7.99/186.72) against Don Enriquez in the first round. OCIR held an eight-car show on June 7 and Don competed. He got a first-round single when Roger Gates shut off with no oil pressure, but in the semifinals his off pace 8.01/189.06 lost to Dave Russell's 7.70/193. |
