Notes: 142" SPE chassis. This is Big Tom Larkin (the older one). Larkin started the season at Lions for an eight-car show on Jan 7. He qualified #1 with a 7.90 and ran a best of 7.88 in eliminations on his way to a final round meeting with Norm Wilcox. Tommy took the victory with a 7.91. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, Larkin qualified #5 with an 8.00/189.86. The car weighed in at 1,160 lbs. He improved to a 7.97/176.12 in the first round, to beat Bill Smith in the "Otie's Speed Shop" car, but an even better 7.96/189.06 in round two lost to Rich Rogers' Low ET of the meet blast of 7.86/192. On March 19, Larkin was at Irwindale for another eight-car show. His 7.93 qualified #1, but he fouled in the first round. He was at Riverside for the HRM Championships in April. In the first round his 7.98/174.41 beat Bob Dodge and in round two a 7.92/189.06 got around Larry Bowers' 8.05/193. Both he and Billy Scott ran 7.93 (Larkin at 189.06) in the semifinals, but Scott got to the finish line first. In a June '67 Drag News there's an ad for SPE claiming that Tom Larkin set the NHRA Top Gas record at 7.72 using their chassis. - RH |

Notes: Jack was at Lions for an eight-car show on March 18. The field had an 8.12 "bump," and he qualified easily (#4). Unfortunately, he lost to Frank Lee in the first round. On April 15, he was back at Lions for another eight-car show. His 7.93 qualified second behind Larry Bowers' 7.83. He lasted until the semifinal before losing to Bob Noice. |

Notes: This team consisted of Dave Emerson, Joe Streje, and Jack Mitchell. The car used an early Hemi stroked to 464 and a Reath 5/8 stroker crank. Ansen provided the rods and pistons. An Engle cam operates the Donovan valves, and a Hilborn injector was used. The 155" chassis was from R&B. The total weight of the bare chassis was just 60 lbs. The car was featured in the August '67 issue of All-American Drags, and it was said to have run a best of 8.05/192. The team ran a confirmed 8.122/191.18 at Indy 1967. Period event coverage (Milwaukee Sentinel 5/30/67) gives the hometown of Beloit, Wis. - RT |

Notes: Gary qualified #1 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.91/187.88. A 7.94/190.72 in the first round, beat Gordon Craig's 8.02/189. In round two, he hurt his motor on an 8.44/131.57 run that advanced when Dick Padar shut off. He borrowed a motor for the semifinals, and it produced an 8.04/163.93 but lost to Kelly Brown's 8.03/185 in the "Diaz-Brown" car. Murphy was at Irwindale for an eight-car show on May 27, but his 8.13/178.92 in the opening round of eliminations lost to Bob Noice's 7.98/188. |

Notes: Noice was at Irwindale on May 27 for an eight-car show. In the opening round of eliminations, his 7.98/188.66 beat Gary Murphy's 8.13/178. But in the semifinals, his 8.04 fell to eventual winner Gerry Glenn's 7.86/194. On July 1, he was at Irwindale for an eight-car show. He soloed in round one with an easy 8.37. In the semifinal, his 8.13/187.10 beat Walt Rhoades' 8.15/188 in the "Boat Anchor." Bob faced the "Porsche Brothers" in the final and won with an 8.14. He qualified #15 in the 32 car field at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals with a 7.95/188.28. Bob lasted until the third round before breaking a rear end on the line against Billy Scott. |
