Notes: Jack was at Englishtown on July 30, where he reset the NHRA A/GS record down to 9.61. He had just reset it two weeks previous to 9.64. His speed on the run was 140.34. He then came out and lowered it again with a 9.53 at 147.54. He also ran the car in BB/A the same day and reset that record to 9.61 after an earlier 9.70 run on a 9.75 record. His speed on the two runs were 145.86 and 146.10. The car was within the legal weight, falling in at 2,225 lbs. Jack won B/GS class at Indy with the previous car, his '39 Willys coupe, two years running ('63-'64). This car followed the same recipe: blown small-block Chevy bolted to a hydro trans. Extensive feature and interview in March '66 Rodding & Restyling. - RT | Handed "Ohio" George Montgomery his first-round loss since 1959. - Todd Merkel |

Notes: Car was nearing completion when the 1967 NHRA rulebook legalized tube frames for gas classes; Crandall & Sandberg's 2x3 tube rectangular tube chassis was one of the first in the gas classes. Car turned 9.80 on first pass (1969) with fill-in driver Al Tschida. Followed up with an overall win at the Rockford (Ill.) Dragways Gas Coupe Nationals, topping a 64-car field. Regular owner/driver Bruce Crandall then piloted car to A/G class win at the 1969 NHRA Nationals at Indy. Photo is from that event. - RT |

Notes: Car was a BB/GS. First was owned by Gene Ciambella (Gene Conway ) in 1964/65. Was then run by Hicks and Sons as an AA/GS in 67/68 with 392. Day bought it from Hick's in 1968 and maintained the car's name of the Agitator. Ran bored 327 Chevy with a blower and two-port Hilborn. Car was destroyed shortly after Indy and was replaced by a 33 Willys Coupe for BB/GS class. Car ran mid nines at 138. Photo from 1969 Indy US Nationals |

Notes: 9.70-9.60's at 140. Got Runner-Up in Super Eliminator at 70 Winternationals. Car was rare in that it relied on a manual 4 speed with a blown motor. A testament to Dondero's skill. |

Notes: It was the beginning of the 1966 racing season, and Gene Ciambella clanged the bell loudly when his newly completed Austin garnered the A/GS trophy at both the AHRA Winternationals at Irwindale, and the NHRA Winternationals at Pomona. Ran a 9.87/144.19 to beat K.S. Pittman's Willys at the NHRA Winter doings. (Also new for '66, NHRA began the first of a series of confounding-to-some reclassifications of the gas class structure when it retitled the "classic" A/GS as AA/G, B/GS as BB/G, etc.) Lastly, about this time Ciambella began using another name professionally. He would in the future be known as Gene Conway. - RT |
