Notes: Thompson was at Lions on March 15 for an eight-car show. He qualified #6 with an 8.94, but an improved 8.84/158.17 in the first round, lost to Mike Mitchell's 8.65/162. Jr. Topped a four-car field of Gassers at U.S. 30 Gary, Indiana, on June 28. He beat K.S. Pittman in the first race with an 8.68/169. He beat the Stone, Woods & Cook Mustang Gasser in his second race with an 8.59/173. Thompson faced off against George Montgomery's SOHC Mustang in the final race. It was quite a race with Thompson's 8.46/181.74 (first AA/GS run over 180) to George's quicker 8.43/177. Not sure we agree with these times since they were turned at a track notorious for giving false times. | Previously listed 181 with no associated track. |

Notes: 1969 US Nationals. Ran as AA/GS, too. (Stock displacement 427 Cammer with C-6 trans. Frame built by owner off of heavily modified '33 Willys frame rails to conform to NHRA's gas class "stock automobile-type frame" rule. Car weight 2,150 lbs. fiberglass '67 Mustang body by Cal Automotive, painted "metalflake Easter Bunny blue." - RT) | The 1967 Mustang Malco Gasser debuted at the 1967 NHRA Spring Nationals in Bristol, Tennessee. This was the car that changed the Gassers forever. It was at corporate Ford's insistence that "Ohio George" race what Ford sold. This car proved so superior in handling and performance that the "World's Wildest Willys" was permanently retired. The Malco Gasser was powered by a 671 Blown 427 cubic inch SOHC Ford engine that made approximately 1200 HP on pump gas and was raced until May 1975. It was chosen for the 1967 Car Craft All-Star Drag Team. George set 5 NHRA National records with this car and won Super Eliminator at the 1969 NHRA Spring Nationals. The Malco Gasser is now on display at the Peterson Museum in Los Angeles, California. |

Notes: Zeller was an employee for Keith Black. Car was flip top style, featuring beautiful paint job. High 8's at 155. The car was then converted to a So-Cal AA/GS roadster where it ran 8.60's. Zellers then ran the Midnight Skulker Cuda in 71. |

Notes: Blown Caddy mill in stock-appearing, all-steel car. Pics show a dark-colored body, white steel wheels, and stock bumpers. The racecar was purchased from Glen Ward and Carl Taylor, who ran it in 1957 and part of '58. Side note: C.J. "Pappy" Hart is a drag racing legend. He founded the Santa Ana Drags (1950-59), acknowledged as the first professional dragstrip. This is where others came to see how this new sport was done.; Peggy turned 12.54 at 115.78 mph at Santa Ana on Sep. 14 in the A/GS coupe. Notes: They said that Ron's '33 Willys couldn't compete with the new wave of late model cars competing in the class, but Bizio proved them wrong. He started the year by winning over an eight-car field at Lions on March 1. He reset both ends of the track record in qualifying with an 8.48/166.35. Ron then beat Skip Hess with an 8.59/165.13 and a semifinal 8.50/164.83 beat Junior Thompson. When Gary Densham failed to fire, he ran a solo 8.52 in the final. He got a runner-up finish at Lions on March 15. Ron qualified #1 with an 8.59 and another 8.59 at 163.63 (Top Speed) beat Bones Balough in the first round. An 8.57 (Low ET) at 163.04 beat Steve Korney in the semifinals. In the final, he slowed to an 8.68/163.04 that lost to Gary Densham's 8.58/160. On April 26, he won an eight-car show at Lions. An 8.76 qualified #1, and he soloed into the semifinals with a 9.70/163.40. In the semifinals, he improved even better to an 8.63/163.63 (Top Speed) in beating Densham. In the final, he set Low ET with an 8.60 at 162.45 to beat Ernie Nicholson's 'Cuda. Ron was back at Lions on May 17 for another Gasser show. He ran 8.75 to qualify #3 in the eight-car field, and a first-round 8.74/160.42 beat Nicholson's 9.00/156. In the semifinals, his 8.81/159.86 wasn't good enough to beat eventual winner Ron Zeller's 8.50/169. He was at an eight-car show at OCIR on May 24. He qualified #3 with an 8.97/135.95. In the first round, he beat Skip Hess's 9.12/155 with an 8.83/160.42. In the semifinals, an 8.82/157.34 advanced when Gary Burgin fouled. Then in the final, he faced off against Korney's Anglia. Ron got the holeshot, but then he slowed as his fuel pump fell off the car and onto the track. He slowed to an 8.96/129.87 for the runner-up spot. AKA Beaver Shot. |

Notes: Cowdrey's ultra-hairy lime-green combo boasted a blown 327 Chev, B&M Hydrostick in a 92-inch wheelbase tube frame. The front fenders, hood, doors were fiberglass. The remaining shell (such as there was) was steel. Built to compete in AAM, SP, the car occasionally ran as a BB/A. Cowdrey went on to race a pair of early 392-powered Chevrolet funnies in the latter half of the decade. He competes in historic, vintage sports car races to this day. There was a two-page photo feature on this car in the 8/66 Car Craft. |

Notes: Reports in Drag News in 1959 give two different classes for this blown Olds gasser-A/G and B/G. Did they switch things around to compete in two different classes, or did they just get classified differently at different strips? During the '59 season, they set Drag News 1320 national records in both A/G and B/G. At San Gabriel on May 31 in A/G, they set a national speed record of 121.29 mph at 11.64. They set national records twice in the B/G class. At Lions on Apr. 12, they set a national record in B/G of 118.89 mph. At Riverside on Sep. 7, they set both ends of the national record in B/G with 11.52 at 120.48 mph. This is all very confusing-national records in two different gas classes. And class wins in two different classes throughout the season at different strips-A/G at San Gabriel (5/31, 6/13, & 8/22) and B/G at Lions (4/12 & 10/17), San Fernando (8/9 & 9/27), and Riverside (9/7). It is all a bit confusing. Photo: "Early Drag Racing Photos," p. 4, The H.A.M.B., jalopyjournal.com - MB |
