Notes: By the end of the season, Sandy had set track records in A/G, B/G, A/A, and B fuel coupe classes at Perryville. He was all over the map. He started the year running in B/G, taking class wins on Feb. 6 (86.90 mph), May 1 (91.84 mph), setting a track record on June 5 (96.77 mph), and breaking the record again on July 3 (98.90 mph). Then he towed to Paradise Mesa for the 2-day Pacific Southwest Championship race with fellow Phoenix racers Carl Grimes and Bill Hopper on July 9/10. He got runner-up to Cooper-Ferre-Wayland in B/G, turning 98.63 mph. After that, he began experimenting with fuel and different setups in other classes back in Arizona. On Aug. 7 at Perryville, he set a B fuel coupe mark with 94.75 mph. He also ran in A/G and set the track record with 96.77 mph. On Oct. 30, he won the Blakely Trophy with a new track record in A/A at 101.42 mph. He teamed up with Harnack to run his coupe in B/A on Nov. 20, turning 99.22 mph. Photo: Just Curious (Phx. Notes: Blown small-block Chevy/hydro combo. Sophisticated chassis was handiwork of the Pacers Auto. Truck was raced into '66. Larry Davis' book "Gasser Wars" reports truck ran into 1965 when a wheelstand cracked the frame and damaged the body. The rebuilt truck flipped the next year. Received feature treatment in 10/65 Cars magazine. - RT |
