Notes: This car represented the zenith of when So-Cal AA/GS deviated from the NHRA interpretation of what a gasser was. It featured a rectangular chassis that allowed the engine to be moved fore and aft. In essence, Lombardo could move it back 25% for BB/A, or adhere to fellow circuit members demands that he at least keep the engines positioned at 10% engine set back. Eventually by late 1969, Lombardo began running the car on low doses of nitro qualifying for a few open 8 car shows. He sold the Vette in mid 70 to make room for his flamed Challenger. Jim Kirby of Challenger blown gas Willys fame bought it dubbed Challenger II and ran it on blown gas funny car circuit from 71/72. Lombardo did coax a few 8.30's with 25% engine set back. |

Notes: Cowdrey's ultra-hairy lime-green combo boasted a blown 327 Chev, B&M Hydrostick in a 92-inch wheelbase tube frame. The front fenders, hood, doors were fiberglass. The remaining shell (such as there was) was steel. Built to compete in AAM, SP, the car occasionally ran as a BB/A. Cowdrey went on to race a pair of early 392-powered Chevrolet funnies in the latter half of the decade. He competes in historic, vintage sports car races to this day. There was a two-page photo feature on this car in the 8/66 Car Craft. |

Notes: Blown, stock displacement 427 Cammer with 4-hole upright Hilborn injectors. C-6 auto trans. Frame built by owner off of heavily modified '33 Willys frame rails to conform to NHRA's gas class "stock automobile-type frame" rule. Car weight 2,150 lbs. fiberglass '67 Mustang body by Cal Automotive, painted "metalflake Easter Bunny blue." | The 1967 Mustang Malco Gasser debuted at the 1967 NHRA Spring Nationals in Bristol, Tennessee. This was the car that changed the Gassers forever. It was at corporate Ford's insistence that "Ohio George" race what Ford sold. This car proved so superior in handling and performance that the "World's Wildest Willys" was permanently retired. The Malco Gasser was powered by a 671 Blown 427 cubic inch SOHC Ford engine that made approximately 1200 HP on pump gas and was raced until May 1975. It was chosen for the 1967 Car Craft All-Star Drag Team. George set 5 NHRA National records with this car and won Super Eliminator at the 1969 NHRA Spring Nationals. The Malco Gasser is now on display at the Peterson Museum in Los Angeles, California. Montgomery had his new Mustang at Kil-Kare Dragway on April 14. It was his first time back at the track since 1960. He only made one pass, but it was a good one, an early shut-off 8.85. George was at Aquasco Speedway on July 21 for an eight-car show. In the opening round, his 8.86/161.57 beat Paul Frost's 9.10/128. In the semifinal, Jack Coonrod's 9.07/154 could do nothing with Montgomery's 8.83/161.87. He faced off against K.S. Pittman in the final. The two left the line together in the final, but the Mustang steadily pulled ahead to win with an 8.74/163.04 over Pittman's 8.88/159. On July 28, he was in New England for a four-car show. Montgomery cracked an aluminum cylinder head in the first round while running a losing 9.00/158 against Ray Cook's 8.91/157 in the "Stone, Woods & Cook" GT500. Rain delayed the race, so the cars could only make two runs. On George's next run, he knew he had to cut the lights close as his SOHC was running wounded. He did cut a good light, and his 9.02/158 held on to win over Pittman's better 8.94/157. A few days later (July 31), these same four cars ran at Kansas City. George's 8.73 beat Junior Thompson's 8.71. In his second race, he fouled away an 8.75 while opponent Pittman ran 8.69 to win. The next day, the four made a quick trip to Wichita International (August 1). Montgomery opened racing with an 8.89/161 that covered Thompson's 8.98/154. Pittman got out on him in the next race, and George had to drive around him with an 8.95/151 that beat Pittman's 8.98/146. George ran an 8.88/160.71 single in the last race of the event. These four were at National Trail on August 11 for their next stop. |

Notes: Late hemi, TorqueFlite combo. This car, with an early hemi, was originally built and raced by Brad Anderson of Colorado. After changing hands the car, renamed Bushwacker, got a fiberglass haircut (i.e., a severely chopped top). The Dart was featured in the 11/70 issue of Rodder and Super/Stock. - RT |

Notes: On January 12, Hess was at OCIR for an eight-car show. He qualified #3 with an 8.90 and in the first round, he beat Gary Burgin, but an off-pace 9.17/156.52 lost to Gary Densham's 8.92/156. Skip was at Lions on March 1 for another eight-car show, but an off pace 10.06 in the first round, lost to Ron Bizio's 8.59/165. He was back at Lions on March 15, but did not compete in the eight-car show. Hess did, however, race Bones Balough in a all-Mustang grudge race. He beat the Hemi-powered Mustang's 8.88/156 with a strong 8.63/163.04. Skip ran his Mustang as a BB/A at the HRM Championships at Riverside in March. He qualified #6 in Super Eliminator with an 8.99 and then made it all the way to the final before losing to Ken Dondero's 9.84/141 with a 9.10/156.79. On April 26, Lions held an eight-car show that had Skip qualify #2 with an 8.77. A consistent 8.78/159.57 lost to Ernie Nicholson's 8.76/160 in the first round. He was back at Lions on May 17 for another eight-car show. An 8.85 qualified #5, but that set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Ron Zeller. Ron got the win with an 8.52/168 over Skip's 8.90/155.97. At OCIR on May 24, it was an eight-car show and in the first round, his 9.12/155.70 lost to Bizio's 8.83/160. On June 7, Lions held a Top Fuel race and Skip and Densham happened to be hanging around in the pits with their cars. Of course, one thing led to another and before long the two were lined up on the track. Skip took the win with his 8.71/160.71 beating Gary's 8.76/160.14. Hess was at OCIR on June 28 for an AA/GS meet. It was a sixteen-car show, and he qualified #1 with an 8.85/162.16. Over 20 cars were on hand trying to qualify. Skip beat Steve Korney's 9.04/155 with a strong 8.71/162.16. In round two, an even better 8.67/161.57 beat Densham. In the semifinals, he beat Burgin's 8.70/160 with an 8.68/162.45. He had to race against Burgin again for the title when Ron Zeller broke a transmission and was replaced by Gary for the final. Once again Hess beat Burgin, this time with an 8.62 Low ET at 162.45 to Burgin's 8.76/160. It was a big win for the SOHC powered Mustang. Another win came on July 19 over an eight-car field at OCIR. Skip ran 8.62/162.16 in the first round, to beat Densham and an 8.60/161.87 in the semifinals beat John Lombardo's Corvette. In the final, he ran 8.65/160.42 to nip Mike Mitchell's close 8.66/163. OCIR held yet another AA/GS race on July 26. It was to be a sixteen-car show, but only fourteen cars showed up. Hess qualified #1 with an 8.77 and got a first-round "bye run." He didn't take it easy, running an 8.73. In round two, he set Low ET with an 8.65/161.87 win over Mitchell's close 8.66/163. In the semifinals, he ran a consistent 8.74/161.57, but lost to Lombardo's Corvette, now driven by Manuel Herrera, at 8.69/166. |

Notes: Pittman ran the first eight-second time at a national event when he ran 8.93/157.87 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He was debuting his new '33 Willys there, and he qualified it with a 9.38/152.02. He eventually set Top Speed and Low ET for the class with his 8.93/157.87, but he finished runner-up to George Montgomery for AA/GS class honors. On March 19, he was at Irwindale. While he was not running in competition, he did make a great 8.91 pass. He ran a career-best(to this point)of 8.90 in May at New England. He bettered that later in the day with an 8.89. Both runs were made using new M&H 11.75s. |

Notes: On January 12, Burgin qualified #7 at an eight-car show at OCIR with a 9.46. He lost to Skip Hess in the first round. It should b mentioned that he was still running his Willys at that race. On March 1, he was at Lions for an eight-car show, but an 8.91/157.61 in the first round, lost to a quick-leaving Ron Zeller, who won with an 8.93/154. He was back at Lions on March 15, but his 10.19 best failed to qualify. Gary qualified #1 with an 8.86/160.14 on May 24 at an eight-car show at OCIR. In the first round, he ran a best ever (to this point) 8.71/161.57 to advance over a fouling Manuel Herrera. In the semifinal, it was Burgin who fouled, wasting an 8.75/160.32 on a red light loss to Steve Korney's 8.84/156. On July 26, OCIR held another AA/GS show. Fourteen cars showed, and Gary's 8.87 qualified #3. He got past the first round, but in round two, his 9.10 lost to Herrera (now driving John Lombardo's Corvette) at 8.90. | Burgin ran Open AA/GS programs in So-Cal. Those cars frequently were not NHRA-legal. However, legal-blown street roadsters were allowed to compete against the NHRA's AA/GS class coupes starting in 1968. - RT Burgin raced the Willys early in 1969, switched to the 27-T Roadster May-1969. |

Notes: Tom was at Vaca Valley in September for its Gas Coupe Championships. It was an eight-car field, and his 9.05 qualified #5. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Mike Mitchell. Tom fouled, and Mike advanced at 8.65. |
