Notes: Injected small-block Chev, 4-speed trans, candy red paint. This car owned the B/G record at various times in the early- to mid-Sixties. According to Larry Davis' "Gasser Wars," Ohioan Hassel was known for his 8,000+ rpm starts. The author recounts how Hassel blew up one engine on a Friday, spent Saturday rebuilding another, then came back Sunday - without having time to fire it - and proceeded to set the NHRA B/G record. This was all with a mill that had less than 30 seconds running time on it. | Ran an 11.34 at the Cecil County Record Runs in May; won B/Gas at the Nationals for the second straight year. - RT

Notes: In two and a half years, nineteen-year-old Carroll Hardy won 75 drag racing trophies. Working on the car out of his father's garage business in Abilene, he worked as a tool setter for U.S. Time Corp. Just a week before the National Championships at Oklahoma City; he blew his engine at Lubbock while turning the fastest time of his career in the supercharged gasser. That was on August 23, when he ran 12.1 at 121 mph. With only six days to fix the '58 Olds engine, he got it repaired in time to get to Oklahoma City just three hours before the registration deadline. Only after the races were underway did he learn that his blower had been ruined in the Lubbock explosion. He thought his hopes were dashed to do well with a loss of 100 horsepower from the inoperable supercharger. However, he came out on top of over 60 entries to take a win in the A/G class. During the meet, he also twisted five axles and burned out a clutch but was able to make the repairs in order to compete with great success. His best time during the meet was 13.53 at 103.56 mph. Notes: Reports in Drag News in 1959 give two different classes for this blown Olds gasser-A/G and B/G. Did they switch things around to compete in two different classes, or did they just get classified differently at different strips? During the '59 season, they set Drag News 1320 national records in both A/G and B/G. At San Gabriel on May 31 in A/G, they set a national speed record of 121.29 mph at 11.64. They set national records twice in the B/G class. At Lions on Apr. 12, they set a national record in B/G of 118.89 mph. At Riverside on Sep. 7, they set both ends of the national record in B/G with 11.52 at 120.48 mph. This is all very confusing-national records in two different gas classes. And class wins in two different classes throughout the season at different strips-A/G at San Gabriel (5/31, 6/13, & 8/22) and B/G at Lions (4/12 & 10/17), San Fernando (8/9 & 9/27), and Riverside (9/7). It is all a bit confusing. Photo: "Early Drag Racing Photos," p. 4, The H.A.M.B., jalopyjournal.com - MB

Notes: 1960 was a year of experimentation for the Grist brothers to see which engine worked best. At San Fernando on Sep. 25, they tried the Edsel and took a class win with 13.30 at 108.69 mph. At Lions on Oct. 15, they tried a Buick in the Willys, nabbing a class win with 12.49 at 118.92 mph. A week later, at San Fernando, they swapped out the Buick for a 445ci Olds motor, possibly a contribution by a certain guy whose last name was Hill. For the next month, newspapers reported that the team raced under the banner Grist-Hill & Reath. With that Olds motor in place for their Oct. 23 outing at San Fernando, they took a class win with 12.21 at 114.64 mph. They still had the Olds engine in the car when they took an A/G win at Pomona on Nov. 27 with 12.48 at 114.64 mph. Photo: Earliest Willys Racecars, p. 1, in Jalopy Journal, The H.A.M.B. - MB
