Notes: Pittman ran the first eight-second time at a national event when he ran 8.93/157.87 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He was debuting his new '33 Willys there, and he qualified it with a 9.38/152.02. He eventually set Top Speed and Low ET for the class with his 8.93/157.87, but he finished runner-up to George Montgomery for AA/GS class honors. On March 19, he was at Irwindale. While he was not running in competition, he did make a great 8.91 pass. He ran a career-best(to this point)of 8.90 in May at New England. He bettered that later in the day with an 8.89. Both runs were made using new M&H 11.75s. |

Notes: In late August, Mike won the Tenth Annual Vaca Valley Gas Coupe Championships. He qualified #1 with an 8.75 and in the first round, he set Low ET and Top Speed with an 8.65/170.50 that beat Tom Chambliss in the Mallicoat Brothers' Cuda. An 8.76 in the semifinals beat Ernie Nicholson while in the finals, Mitchell ran 8.69/166.50 to beat Ron Zeller's 8.92/159.60. He was at OCIR shortly after that, but in the first round, of the sixteen-car show he lost a blower belt and shut off. |

Notes: Fred bought the Corvette from the Warren Brothers less engine. He had the car repainted, changing it to a 70s style paint scheme. To power the Corvette, Fred used an early Chrysler Hemi engine out of a drag boat that he had previously raced. The Corvette was successful in the AA/GS and BB/A classes. He won the BB/A class at the 1971 NHRA Winternationals at Pomona, Calif., with Buzzy Wadsworth doing the driving. |

Notes: George Montgomery's cars were always super-sanitary. This '33 Willys was no different. It was powered by a stock-size 427 SOHC Ford. George didn't like any unnecessary weight on his cars. His Willys tipped the scales at 2,400 lbs. On June 26, he was at Bluegrass Raceway for a best of three match race against Billy Jacobs. In their first race, Montgomery's 10.15/137.82 beat Billy's late 10.10/139 in his Mopar. The two came out for the second race but George had to retire and Willys as it was chewing up the Hydros at the rate of one per week.So he had to bring out the "Hurst Gasser Passer" to finish the match. |

Notes: He started the season running his inline Buick 8 motor in B/SR but switched over to a blown Chrysler in August as he planned on going to the Nationals in Kansas City and running in A/SR. Research could not confirm if he went to the Nationals. Research could also not find out if the 61-year-old Cassedy did all his own driving. Bob Rector was his driver in 1955. He was almost a weekly class winner in both B/SR and A/SR at most of the Southland drag strips, including Pomona, Paradis Mesa, San Gabriel Valley, Lions, Colton, and Santa Ana. His first outing in Southern California with the blown Chrysler was at Santa Ana in the AOH roadster class, where he clocked 108.89 mph. He ran all the way into December, picking up A/SR class wins at Lions, San Gabriel Valley, Colton, Santa Ana, and Paradise Mesa. Photo: Los Angeles Times, Aug 19, 1956 - MB |
