Notes: Injected small-block Chev, 4-speed trans, candy red paint. This car owned the B/G record at various times in the early- to mid-Sixties. According to Larry Davis' "Gasser Wars," Ohioan Hassel was known for his 8,000+ rpm starts. The author recounts how Hassel blew up one engine on a Friday, spent Saturday rebuilding another, then came back Sunday - without having time to fire it - and proceeded to set the NHRA B/G record. This was all with a mill that had less than 30 seconds running time on it. | Ran an 11.34 at the Cecil County Record Runs in May; won B/Gas at the Nationals for the second straight year. - RT |

Notes: Lutz & Lundberg's yellow Anglia took the A/G class win at the '64 Nationals, beating Gene Altizer for the trophy. While most of the upper gas class cars were sporting a beefed hydro, driver Jim Lutz rowed a 4-speed stick. The car was destroyed in a racing accident at Minnesota Dragways in 1965. The team went on to build and race a succession of well-remembered altered-wheelbase 4/4/2 funny cars. (Times cited may not necessarily be the car's fastest or quickest.) - RT |

Notes: Blown small-block Chevy/hydro combo. Took B/GS trophy at Indy for second consecutive year with a holeshot 10.54/134.53 win over Jerry Mallicoat. By all counts a beautiful car, it was unusual in that Merkel chose to retain the busier, original steel 1937/39 front end. (On a Willys this sheetmetal was typically swapped out for a cleaner '40-'41 style 'glass front end.) Indianapolis, Ind. 9/64 ('64 Nationals) - RT |

Notes: Won class (F/G) at his first Nationals appearance. Ferd (not Fred) Napfel's "secret" seemed tied to a 288-cube Chevy, 4-speed and a heavy 40-pound flywheel. That, and 8,000 rpm banzai starts. In his book "Gasser Wars", author Larry Davis says Napfel's little white '55 ran so hard, so consistently that it may have been the most protested gasser in the country. He was always found legal, and Davis claims that protest fees paid Napfel's expenses throughout the 1965 season. - RT |

Notes: In 1963 he purchased a '41 Willys coupe, also powered by a blown Oldsmobile engine. The fabricated weight of the Willys was 2000 pounds. Because of the weight restrictions in the B/Gas Supercharged class, 950 pounds of ballast had to be added to bring it into conformance. - Ron's website |

Notes: Hilborn-injected 352" (hogged-out 283) Chev with a 4-speed Chevy trans. Distinguished from Wil-A-Meaner I by matched "snorkel" scoops on either side of the Willys hood. Moved on to late hemi power with next iteration of this car. - RT |
