Notes: 9.70-9.60's at 140. Got Runner-Up in Super Eliminator at 70 Winternationals. Car was rare in that it relied on a manual 4 speed with a blown motor. A testament to Dondero's skill.

Notes: Thompson was at Lions on March 15 for an eight-car show. He qualified #6 with an 8.94, but an improved 8.84/158.17 in the first round, lost to Mike Mitchell's 8.65/162. Jr. Topped a four-car field of Gassers at U.S. 30 Gary, Indiana, on June 28. He beat K.S. Pittman in the first race with an 8.68/169. He beat the Stone, Woods & Cook Mustang Gasser in his second race with an 8.59/173. Thompson faced off against George Montgomery's SOHC Mustang in the final race. It was quite a race with Thompson's 8.46/181.74 (first AA/GS run over 180) to George's quicker 8.43/177. Not sure we agree with these times since they were turned at a track notorious for giving false times. | Previously listed 181 with no associated track.

Notes: Blown roadsters of this ilk surfaced in response to the very liberal rules allowed by local So-Cal promoters wherein cars were being built with little regard to NHRA rules. A sort of compromise in that liberal engine set back, and lightweight similar to the more radical bodied cars (think Mike Mitchell, John Lombardo Corvettes) yet retaining traditional body style. Cars were like an altered and performed no better than the others. On occasion, these roadsters qualified for a few open fuel altered shows when car turnout was light or weather conditions negated the advantages of a blown fuel motor, read no traction. They pretty much ceased to exist by the end of 1970. Densham's car ran 8.60s at 160 plus on a good day. This explanation and recorded performance pretty much holds true for all the roadsters of that era. - BD | Driver's name given as "Bill" in several mentions in event coverage of the 8th Annual Vaca Valley Raceway (Calif.) Gas Coupe and Sedan Championships, which Densham won in '69 with an 8.96/160.71. - RT

Notes: On January 12, OCIR held an eight-car show. Zeller qualified #4 with an 8.93 and in the first round, his 8.94/158.73 beat Pete Rogers. In the semifinals, both he and his opponent, Steve Korney, ran 8.99 (Ron at 134.55), but Steve got the win. He was at Lions on March 15 for another eight-car show where he ran 9.25 to qualify #7. Unfortunately, he hurt some parts on the run and was unable to run in eliminations. Ron had an interesting day at OCIR on May 24. He was there for an eight-car show and barely made the show. A 9.27 got him the #8 spot. In the first round, he was up against alternate Ernie Nicholson. Ron really stepped it up, beating Ernie with an 8.63/167.91 (Low ET and Top Speed). In the semifinals, Ron thought it might be a good place to take a little nap and his 8.68/167.91 lost to Korney's 8.84/156.

Notes: The Warrens sold the Corvette less engine to Fred Schirmer of Pleasanton, Calif. Fred had the car repainted, changing it to a 70’s style paint scheme. To power the Corvette Fred used an early Chrysler Hemi engine out of a drag boat that he had previously raced. The Corvette was successful in the AA/GS and BB/A classes. Winning the BB/A class at the 1971 NHRA Winternationals at Pomona Calif. with Buzzy Wadsworth doing the driving. 9.02/159.29 times recorded at the 8th Annual Valley Raceway Gas Coupe and Sedan Championships not representative of the car's capabilities. - RT

Notes: When the Vette was first completed Ron Rinauro put his Hemi engine, transmission, 3rd member, rear wheels & tires from his 33 Willys in Rod’s Corvette to race AA/GS match races, with Rinauro doing the driving. After 8 months the engine was removed and replaced with a Charlie McCullough built injected big block to race in the B/A class, with Rod Baker doing the driving. Rinauro’s engine was put in his new AA/GS 1970 Dodge Challenger. Also Brasher & Cummings put their Hemi engine out of their Willys in this car, with Bill Brasher doing the driving.

Notes: They said that Ron's '33 Willys couldn't compete with the new wave of late model cars competing in the class, but Bizio proved them wrong. He started the year by winning over an eight-car field at Lions on March 1. He reset both ends of the track record in qualifying with an 8.48/166.35. Ron then beat Skip Hess with an 8.59/165.13 and a semifinal 8.50/164.83 beat Junior Thompson. When Gary Densham failed to fire, he ran a solo 8.52 in the final. He got a runner-up finish at Lions on March 15. Ron qualified #1 with an 8.59 and another 8.59 at 163.63 (Top Speed) beat Bones Balough in the first round. An 8.57 (Low ET) at 163.04 beat Steve Korney in the semifinals. In the final, he slowed to an 8.68/163.04 that lost to Gary Densham's 8.58/160. On April 26, he won an eight-car show at Lions. An 8.76 qualified #1, and he soloed into the semifinals with a 9.70/163.40. In the semifinals, he improved even better to an 8.63/163.63 (Top Speed) in beating Densham. In the final, he set Low ET with an 8.60 at 162.45 to beat Ernie Nicholson's 'Cuda. Ron was back at Lions on May 17 for another Gasser show. He ran 8.75 to qualify #3 in the eight-car field, and a first-round 8.74/160.42 beat Nicholson's 9.00/156. In the semifinals, his 8.81/159.86 wasn't good enough to beat eventual winner Ron Zeller's 8.50/169. He was at an eight-car show at OCIR on May 24. He qualified #3 with an 8.97/135.95. In the first round, he beat Skip Hess's 9.12/155 with an 8.83/160.42. In the semifinals, an 8.82/157.34 advanced when Gary Burgin fouled. Then in the final, he faced off against Korney's Anglia. Ron got the holeshot, but then he slowed as his fuel pump fell off the car and onto the track. He slowed to an 8.96/129.87 for the runner-up spot. AKA Beaver Shot.

Notes: On January 12, Hess was at OCIR for an eight-car show. He qualified #3 with an 8.90 and in the first round, he beat Gary Burgin, but an off-pace 9.17/156.52 lost to Gary Densham's 8.92/156. Skip was at Lions on March 1 for another eight-car show, but an off pace 10.06 in the first round, lost to Ron Bizio's 8.59/165. He was back at Lions on March 15, but did not compete in the eight-car show. Hess did, however, race Bones Balough in a all-Mustang grudge race. He beat the Hemi-powered Mustang's 8.88/156 with a strong 8.63/163.04. Skip ran his Mustang as a BB/A at the HRM Championships at Riverside in March. He qualified #6 in Super Eliminator with an 8.99 and then made it all the way to the final before losing to Ken Dondero's 9.84/141 with a 9.10/156.79. On April 26, Lions held an eight-car show that had Skip qualify #2 with an 8.77. A consistent 8.78/159.57 lost to Ernie Nicholson's 8.76/160 in the first round. He was back at Lions on May 17 for another eight-car show. An 8.85 qualified #5, but that set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Ron Zeller. Ron got the win with an 8.52/168 over Skip's 8.90/155.97. At OCIR on May 24, it was an eight-car show and in the first round, his 9.12/155.70 lost to Bizio's 8.83/160. On June 7, Lions held a Top Fuel race and Skip and Densham happened to be hanging around in the pits with their cars. Of course, one thing led to another and before long the two were lined up on the track. Skip took the win with his 8.71/160.71 beating Gary's 8.76/160.14. Hess was at OCIR on June 28 for an AA/GS meet. It was a sixteen-car show, and he qualified #1 with an 8.85/162.16. Over 20 cars were on hand trying to qualify. Skip beat Steve Korney's 9.04/155 with a strong 8.71/162.16. In round two, an even better 8.67/161.57 beat Densham. In the semifinals, he beat Burgin's 8.70/160 with an 8.68/162.45. He had to race against Burgin again for the title when Ron Zeller broke a transmission and was replaced by Gary for the final. Once again Hess beat Burgin, this time with an 8.62 Low ET at 162.45 to Burgin's 8.76/160. It was a big win for the SOHC powered Mustang. Another win came on July 19 over an eight-car field at OCIR. Skip ran 8.62/162.16 in the first round, to beat Densham and an 8.60/161.87 in the semifinals beat John Lombardo's Corvette. In the final, he ran 8.65/160.42 to nip Mike Mitchell's close 8.66/163. OCIR held yet another AA/GS race on July 26. It was to be a sixteen-car show, but only fourteen cars showed up. Hess qualified #1 with an 8.77 and got a first-round "bye run." He didn't take it easy, running an 8.73. In round two, he set Low ET with an 8.65/161.87 win over Mitchell's close 8.66/163. In the semifinals, he ran a consistent 8.74/161.57, but lost to Lombardo's Corvette, now driven by Manuel Herrera, at 8.69/166.

Notes: On January 12, Burgin qualified #7 at an eight-car show at OCIR with a 9.46. He lost to Skip Hess in the first round. It should b mentioned that he was still running his Willys at that race. On March 1, he was at Lions for an eight-car show, but an 8.91/157.61 in the first round, lost to a quick-leaving Ron Zeller, who won with an 8.93/154. He was back at Lions on March 15, but his 10.19 best failed to qualify. Gary qualified #1 with an 8.86/160.14 on May 24 at an eight-car show at OCIR. In the first round, he ran a best ever (to this point) 8.71/161.57 to advance over a fouling Manuel Herrera. In the semifinal, it was Burgin who fouled, wasting an 8.75/160.32 on a red light loss to Steve Korney's 8.84/156. On July 26, OCIR held another AA/GS show. Fourteen cars showed, and Gary's 8.87 qualified #3. He got past the first round, but in round two, his 9.10 lost to Herrera (now driving John Lombardo's Corvette) at 8.90. | Burgin ran Open AA/GS programs in So-Cal. Those cars frequently were not NHRA-legal. However, legal-blown street roadsters were allowed to compete against the NHRA's AA/GS class coupes starting in 1968. - RT Burgin raced the Willys early in 1969, switched to the 27-T Roadster May-1969.

Notes: The car debuted in 1965 as an A/Gasser, then stepped up to AA/G in '66. Korney fielded the car as an Anglia until mid-1970. In '69, he was runner-up to Ohio George Montgomery in AA/GS Indy class runoffs, marking the end of dominance by a classic gasser-style bodied car in AA/GS. In '71, the Anglia shell was replaced by a Corvette shell and with the Stone, Woods & Cook logo went on tour with K.S. Pittman, Junior Thompson, and a few others, dubbed a traveling blown gas funny car circuit. As of mid-'80s, rumor had it that Korney still had the car, including the Anglia body. As an Anglia, ran 8.50s, as a Vette, 8.30s. | Steve started the '69 season by winning over an eight-car field at OCIR. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 with an 8.55. In round one, his 9.05/153.84 advanced over Brad Anderson's 9.11/155. In the semifinals, both he and his opponent Ron Zeller ran 8.99 (Steve at 155.97), but the Anglia got the win light. Then in the final, he faced Gary Densham and Korney ran Low ET of eliminations with an 8.77/157.45 to take the victory over Gary's 8.98/156. He was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where he ran in the Super Eliminator class. He won his first-round race with a 9.17/155.79, but he lost to Jack Ditmars in round two. On March 15 he was at OCIR for another eight-car show. He qualified #3 with an 8.67 and in the first round, he beat Gary Burgin with an 8.69/158.45. In the semifinals, he had problems and shut off to 10.84 in a loss to Ron Bizio. Lions held another eight-car show on April 26 and Steve qualified #4 with an 8.88. An 8.82/157.61 advanced past round one when Mike Boosin's Corvette failed to fire. In the semifinals, the Anglia broke on its burnout giving Ernie Nicholson a solo into the final. Steve was at OCIR on May 21 for an eight-car show. He qualified #2 with an 8.90/150.18, but picked up to an 8.81/155.97 in the first round, while beating Danny Collins' 9.18/152. In the semifinals, he beat Zeller's 8.68/167 with a holeshot 8.84/156.29. He saved his best for the last round where he ran an 8.71/156.25 to win the meet over Ron Bizio who had his fuel pump actually fall off onto the track during their final round run. Another AA/GS show took place at OCIR on July 26. It was hoped to be a sixteen-car show, but only fourteen cars showed. Steve qualified #8 with a 9.00. In the first round, he improved to an 8.72 to beat Steve Thomas. In round two he beat Densham's 8.78 with an 8.66. Gary protested Korney's Anglia and the car was found to be legal, even weighing 100 pounds more than it had to at the 5 lbs. per CID minimum. Steve slept in the semifinal and ran a strong 8.73, but lost to Keith Bush's 8.83. - RH

Notes: Ernie was at Lions on February 1, where he made a check-out pass of 8.90/137.82. Lions held an eight-car show on April 26, and Nicholson qualified with an 8.95. He picked up a bunch in the first round, as his 8.76/160.14 beat Skip Hess' 8.78/159. In the semifinals, he soloed with an 8.86/141.28 when Steve Korney's Anglia broke on its burnout. That put him in the final against Ron Bizio's Willys. Unfortunately, the Cuda had problems, and Ernie shut down to a 9.44/109.57 while Ron went on to win with an 8.60/162. He was back at Lions for another eight-car show on May 17. An 8.99 qualified #7, but a first-round 9.00/156.25 lost to Bizio's 8.74/160. Ernie failed to qualify for an eight-car show at OCIR on May 24. The bump spot was a 9.27. One car could not run, and Ernie's Cuda got into the show. He picked it up a whole bunch in the first round, running an 8.94/157.06, but still losing to Ron Zeller's Low ET blast of 8.63/167. Nicholson's 8.94 would have qualified for the field in the third spot. He was at OCIR on June 28 for a sixteen-car show. A first-round 9.42/151.77 advanced easily, but in round two, his 9.31/153.84 fell to Gary Densham's 8.87/160. On July 26, he was back at OCIR for another AA/GS show. He qualified #6 with an 8.94, but he fouled against Gene Modlin in the first round and lost with a 9.35.

Notes: Built at a cost of $7000, it first ran on a drag strip in 1968. Dillon fitted the '67 Chevy engine with a Hampton blower and Hilborn injectors. The '60 Olds rear end is fed by a B & M prepared '53 Olds hydro. Larry Johnson did the driving. The best times on it were 8.90 at 159.60 mph. Notes: Densham was at OCIR on January 12 for an eight-car show. His 9.02 qualified #6. In the opening round, he improved to 8.91/157.61 to beat Bones Balough's quicker 8.86/155 in the "Stone, Woods and Cook" car. He took out Skip Hess' SOHC-powered Mustang in the semifinal with an 8.92/156.12 to Skip's 9.17/156. He faced the "Goldfinger" Anglia of Steve Korney in the final. Gary tried hard, but his 8.98/156.79 wasn't enough to beat Steve's 8.77/157. Lions held an eight-car show on May 17, and Gary's 8.63 qualified second behind Ron Zeller's 8.62. In the first round, his 8.70/158.73 defeated Manual Herrera's 8.78/153. He cut a good light in the semifinal, seeing his 8.79/152.80 beat Korney's quicker 8.75/144. Unfortunately, he lost in the final to Zeller, driving John Lombardo's Corvette.
