Notes: In 1963 he purchased a '41 Willys coupe, also powered by a blown Oldsmobile engine. The fabricated weight of the Willys was 2000 pounds. Because of the weight restrictions in the B/Gas Supercharged class, 950 pounds of ballast had to be added to bring it into conformance. - Ron's website | Ron blasted into the record books with a blistering run of 9.90 seconds at 136.87 mph. The record was set by the NHRA as being "unrealistic" in 1968. - Ron's website (I think Ron means 1965, as that was the amazing 9.94 at Half Moon Bay that set the sport on its ear. We need to confirm. - BP) |

Notes: Arend's cross-species split-window Sting Ray is well-remembered by fans of mid-'60s drag machinery. With a late-model, ram-tubed 426 Dodge hemi feeding the horses though a Torqueflite trans into a quick-change rearend, a straight front axle up front and slicks suspended in massively hogged-out wheelwells in the rear, it had an in-your-face look that stuck in your head. Looks aside, Arend's "Mongoose" won Best Engineered Car at the '65 Nationals, where he reset the BM/SP speed record to 133.72 mph. - RT |

Notes: This Cheetah knockoff was built by Fiberglass Trends owner Marv Eldridge to showcase his business. The A/MSP national record holder was powered by a near-stock Dodge 426 Ramcharger wedge running two 4bbl carbs. The entire car less upholstery was built in the FT shop. Trans was C&O hydro. A beautiful, well-remembered car. Featured in 10/65 Car Craft with cool William A. Moore cutaway illustration. |

Notes: Luzader's unchopped, full-fendered, jacked-up Arbor Green 5-window coupe was a popular gas class competitor from the mid-Sixties through the early Seventies. Over the years, the never-changing combo (0.60-over 327 Chev, Hilborn injection, 4-speed) ran variously in C/G, D/G, E/G, and D/A. Luzader's immaculate coupe, as yet unlettered, garnered a two-page feature in the December 1964 issue of Rod & Custom. - RT; Photo: Rodder's Journal, no. 19 (Spring 2002), p. 28 - MB |

Notes: Won F/G at this year's Indy Nationals for the second straight year. Napfel's cop of the Street Eliminator title at this meet is the stuff of gasser legend. In the final run it was the F/G Storming Bull vs Carl Kirk in the Eckard & Kirk A/G Anglia. In his book "Gasser Wars" Larry Davis recounts that both cars were consistently running on the class record, and it would take a record run to win. Kirk had to wait out a lifetime on the starting line, as Napfel took a full 2.5-second handicap start and poured on the coals. The Anglia gave chase and nearly turned the tables, but in the end it was the white '55 that took home the prize. - RT |

Notes: Set both ends of NHRA national record for A/GS at the '64 Nationals (9.99/146.10), but did not win class). - RT | Pittman showed up at Richmond Dragway on July 12 and ran some amazing times with his '35 Willys. He made four runs with times of 9.89/143.76, 9.81/145.16, 9.75/146.81, and a jaw dropping 9.70/144.95. Willys used a B&M Hydro stick and of course, an Engle cam. |
