Notes: 236 IHRA. Joe's new Beretta wasn't ready for this race, so he borrowed Tom Wright's Camaro and put his driveline into it. He qualified #11 with a 7.52/182.66, and in the first round, he beat Gary Brown. In the second round, his 7.58/180 lost to Darrell Alderman's 7.59/180. Car was sold to Carlos Gonzales in 1988. |

Notes: Joe qualified #1 at Pomona for the Winternationals at 7.528/182.55, but a first-round 7.67/177.86 lost to Dempsey Hardy's 7.63/175. At the Gatornationals, he qualified #10 and lost to Don Campanello in the first round. A 7.61/181.37 qualified #6 at Atlanta (with new paint) for the Southern Nationals. He beat Joe Sway in the first round but lost to Bob Glidden in the second frame. He ran well at Baton Rouge for the Cajun Nationals, qualifying #3 with a 7.58/181.56. He beat Frank Iaconio in the first round and soloed in round two with a 7.59/178.74 when Gordie Rivera failed to show. In the semifinal, he faced Warren Johnson, and despite running 7.62/178.64, he lost to WJ's 7.60/180. He again qualified #3 (7.58/181.30) at the next event, the Springnationals in June. And once again, he made it to the semifinals. He started his march by beating Kenny Delco's 7.80/174 with a 7.70/180.36. A 7.63/181.41 beat Hardy's 7.79/173 in round two. In the semifinal, he lost to Johnson (again), with his 7.67/184.53 losing to WJ's 7.61/183. Lepone got a win over an eight-car field at the Super Stock Nationals. He qualified #2 with a 7.57/182.55 and beat Charlie Garrett in the first round. A 7.66/181.08 beat Delco's 7.76/177 in the semis. He faced Joe Clark in the final, whose Camaro was a tenth off Lepone's pace. Sure enough, Clark gambled on the tree and lost, giving Joe an easy 7.62/181.08 run for the victory. For the third NHRA race in a row, Joe qualified #3 (7.58/182.11) at the Grandnationals in Canada. | Joe qualified #8 at the NHRA US Nationals with a 7.543/185.91. Lepone lost in Round 1 to #16 qualifier Mark Pawuk. |

Notes: Mostly raced Texas Pro Stock Association but Ran NHRA, too. Bailey was the fourth alternate at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals with a 7.71/180.07 best. That wasn't too bad considering that 34 cars were attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field. He was also the fifth alternate at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 7.68/180.07 best. At the NHRA Grandnationals, his 7.82/181.15 was the seventh alternate for the show. He then went to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Bailey ran 7.68/180.28 there, but that time was only good enough for the seventeenth alternate spot. He didn't run very well at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. There were 29 Pro Stock cars there, and his 7.87/175.33 was the slowest of all of them. On August 29, he was at Texas Raceway for the Texas Pro Stock Championships. This was the third Texas Pro Stock Association race of the year. It was a 1/8 mile track. His 5.01/138.88 qualified #3 in the eight-car field. He beat Mike Garvie in round one, but he was late off the line against Frank Sicinski in the semifinal, and despite setting Low ET at 4.99/140.62, he lost to Frank's 5.07. The following week, he was at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. His 7.60/180.28 (fifteenth alternate) failed to qualify, but he was ahead of some "name" drivers who also failed to make the show. Names like Rickie Smith, Don Beverley, Sam Gianino, etc. One of his better times of the year came at Maple Grove during qualifying for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. He still failed to qualify, being the eighth alternate, but he ran 7.59/179.39. Once again, he ran better than some established teams. His best times came at the World Finals with a 7.526/182.77. |

Notes: Mark qualified in the unlucky #9 spot at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.52/184.16. Why was it unlucky? Before 1990, the number one qualifier faced the number nine qualifier on down the line. So in the first round, low qualifier Bob Glidden sent Pawuk home. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Mark was the second alternate with a best of 7.54/183.48. He made the show at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals where his 7.55/182.70 qualified #11. He fouled away a 7.55 in the first round, against Bruce Allen who won with a 7.46. At the NHRA Cajun Nationals, he was the first alternate with a 7.68/185.60. He did much worse at the NHRA Springnationals where his 7.71/181.12 was good for the ninth alternate. Mark ran 7.702/181.08 at the NHRA Grandnational Molson. |

Notes: Warren qualified #4 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.65/180.50. He beat Joe Lepone in the first round, with a 7.70/180.94 while a second round 7.69/179.49 beat Rickie Smith's T-Bird. In the semifinals, Butch Leal fouled away a 7.72/180 while Johnson moved into the final with a 7.73/179.28. There he met up with Bob Glidden. Bob was on a roll here, resetting the NHRA ET record no less than three times during the event as well as setting a new speed record so the final was no surprise when Glidden got the victory with a 7.58/184 over WJ's 7.77/179.21. At the NHRA Gatornationals, WJ qualified #2 with a 7.63/183.00 just behind Glidden's 7.61/183. These two would once again work their way to the final. WJ ran 7.55 in all three of his rounds over Ken Dondero, a fouling Nick Nikolis over Gordie Rivera in the semifinal. His best speed was 184.35 in the semis. This time going into the final it was WJ who had the edge. Glidden had run 7.55 and 7.57 in the last two rounds so it would still be close. WJ got the victory with his slowest run of eliminations, a 7.60/183.82 that was still enough to cover Bob's 7.68/170. The battle between these two continued at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. There WJ set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 7.65 at 181.08. A first-round 7.73/181.07 beat Gene Fasching, but in round two he came up against Glidden who qualified poorly (#13). Bob beat him with a 7.72/179 to WJ's 7.79/179.14. Glidden went to the final only to lose to Butch Leal. Next stop was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was to be another WJ vs Glidden final. Warren qualified #2 with a 7.54/184.19, not behind Glidden, but behind Bruce Allen in the Reher-Morrison Camaro also at 7.54. Bob was third with a 7.58. WJ ran a first-round 7.63/181.81 to beat Don Coonce and in round two his 7.68/178.64 advanced when Jerry Eckman fouled. In the semifinals, his 7.62/181.52 sent Dondero packing. Bob had run 7.68/182 in his semifinal win so it would still be close. WJ picked up his second NHRA victory of the year with a 7.61/178.64 beating Glidden's 7.67/183. He didn't have to wait long for his third as it came at the next NHRA race, the Springnationals. There WJ qualified #3 with a 7.64 with a track record speed of 181.52. A first-round 7.70/179.78 beat Sam Gianino while in round two Rivera fouled against him and WJ moved on with a 7.64/180.65. In the semifinals, his 7.66/180 stopped Leal's 7.74/178. In the final he was up against Allen. Bruce had problems and WJ took his twelfth NHRA National event title with a 7.68/180.44. Where was Glidden? He lost to Leal in round two. Warren made a stop at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Magazine Nationals where he dominated the race. He set track records of 7.61 and 180.72 in qualifying #1 for the eight-car field. Another 7.61 in the first round, beat Charlie Garrett and in the semifinals his 7.65/180.00 took out Dondero's 7.79/177. In the final he met Ronnie Manchester. Ronnie tried hard, but his 7.85/172 finished second best to WJ's 7.64/180.00. But then, just like that, the magic stopped. He would not win another NHRA National event in '85, and he would make only one more final round. Warren went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals where he qualified #2 with a 7.53/185.26 (Top Speed), but his first-round 7.62/180.36 lost to a quick-leaving Don Campanello who beat him with a 7.68/180. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, he qualified #2 again with a 7.55/183.29. He lasted until the second round. Warren was #2 in qualifying again at the NHRA Mile High Nationals with an 8.00/172.41. He won his first two rounds with runs of 8.04/172.08 and 8.01/172.08 over Fasching and Frank Iaconio. In the semifinals, he became the only other Pro Stock driver to run in the seven's besides Glidden here when he ran 7.99/172.74. Unfortunately, Bob was in the other lane running 7.96/173 to win. He also made it into the semifinals at the NHRA Northstar Nationals. He qualified #3 with a 7.67/180.72, and he beat Dempsey hardy in round one, with a 7.59/182.55. In the second round, Stan Mizell fouled and WJ advanced with a 7.68/182.55. Once again he faced Glidden in the semifinals and once again Glidden came out on top with a 7.57/183 to Warren's 7.60/183.67. At Indy, he was in the Pro Stock Challenge race. A race for the top qualifiers in all NHRA National events for the past twelve months. It was an eight-car field and WJ's 7.60/185.03 in the first round, advanced when Rivera fouled. In the semifinals, WJ fouled away a 7.66/180.14 against Leal who won with a 7.67/180. For the actual NHRA US Nationals, a 7.60/184.04 qualified #3. In the first round his 7.63/184.19 beat Fasching. In the second round, Rivera's 7.80/176 lost to his 7.60/182.11, but a strong 7.61/182.40 lost to Glidden's holeshot 7.66/181. As you can see, even though he was not winning, he was still running strong. The next stop was at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. A 7.52/183.59 qualified #2 behind Glidden's record-setting 7.49. He beat Dondero in the first round, by a tenth,7.57/183.15 to 7.67/179. In round two he carried over the same performance advantage over Iaconio with a 7.58/182.77 beating Frank's 7.68/180. It got closer in the semifinals where WJ's 7.61/182.33 beat Tony Christian's 7.65/180. This put Warren into the final against Allen. Bruce was sharp on the light and his 7.59/179 got the victory over WJ's quicker 7.57/182.70. |

Notes: Dave ran at several NHRA national events. He started slowly but eventually started running some good times by the end of the year. At Englishtown, he ran 8.445/133.23. Dave improved to 8.038/169.52 at Richmond but the slowest alternate there. He could only get an 8.650/149.65 at Columbus and an 8.257/177.69 at the Western Auto Parts Nationals, again anchored the DNQ list. Dave started coming around at Brainerd, where his 7.929/180.39 still was the slowest of the DNQ list but was a step in the right direction. However, he had nothing but trouble at Indy, and his 9.268/131.73 again brought up the rear. Dave was at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. He was the twenty-first alternate with a 7.531/181.63 best, showing continued improvement. That was Dave's final national event of the year. |

Notes: Paul was at Union Grove on August 31 for a Mid-West Pro Stock Association race. He beat Leroy Roeder in the first round, with a 7.81/185 and in the semifinals, a 7.53 beat Joe Cleary's 7.57. In the final, he was up against Chuck DeMory and they had a good race with Chuck's 7.57/180 coming out on top over Paul's 7.58/183. |

Notes: Ken started the '87 NHRA season by qualifying #10 at Pomona for the Winternationals with a 7.53/184.69. He lost to Warren Johnson in the first round. At the Gatornationals, a 7.53/184.53 qualified #15, but again he lost in the first round, this time to Darrell Alderman. He attempted to make the field at Atlanta for the Southern Nationals, but his best of 7.59/182.03 was good for the third alternate. The next event was the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge. Delco qualified #14 with a 7.65/182.01, and in the first round, he beat Lee Dean. He had problems in round two and shut off against Bruce Allen. That was the last race of the Camaro before Kenny went to the Trans Am for Columbus. If anyone knows the best ET/MPH for Kenny in this Camaro for 1987, please let us know. - Rob McCabe |

Notes: Carlos Gonzales had never driven a Pro Stock car until a week before the NHRA Gatornationals. At the Gatornats, he ran a 7.641/183.74 for the seventeenth alternate spot. This was pretty impressive as it was his first national event in a Pro Stock car. He ran even better at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals where he was the fourth alternate with a best of 7.631/182.29. He skipped the next few NHRA events before showing up at Englishtown in May for the Summernationals. He was the fifteenth alternate there at 7.671/180.86. He ran 7.574/181.96 at Ennis and 7.616/181.65 at Phoenix. His best times came at the World Finals with a sixth alternate effort of 7.537/183.89. Former Tom Wright car. |
