Notes: Dave did not race at the NHRA Winternationals, but he was at the NHRA Gatornationals where he qualified #4 with a 7.70/179.92. He lost to Frank Sicinski in the first round. He again qualified #4 at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals with a 7.71/178.85. In the first round both he and John Brumley ran 7.86 (Dave at 176.81), but Hutchens got the win light. In the second round Gordie Rivera fouled away a 7.78 and Dave advanced with a 7.87/176.26. In the semifinals, he came up against the "known leaver," Butch Leal and Dave pushed the 'tree too hard and fouled away a 7.78 while eventual winner Leal advanced with a 7.87. NHRA's next stop was at Baton Rouge for the Cajun Nationals. Hutchens ran 7.67/182.11 to qualify #6, but he fouled away a 7.73 in the first round, against Jerry Eckman who advanced with a 7.81. At the NHRA Springnationals, 34 cars attempted to qualify for the sixteen-car field. Dave qualified #6 with a 7.69/179.49. Once again he drew a red light in the first round, throwing away a 7.76 while his opponent, Joe Lepone advanced with a 7.84. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals where he qualified #5 with a 7.59/182.11. A first-round 7.69/179.49 beat Nick Nikolis, but in the second round his 7.70/179.49 lost to eventual winner Bruce Allen's 7.58/183. He qualified #8 at the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown with a 7.66/180, but he lost early. At the NHRA Mile High Nationals he qualified #5 with an 8.07/173.75, but he fouled away an 8.14 in the first round. |

Notes: Listed times from The Drag Racing List, Volume 1, Number 9, December 86/January 87. | Nick ran well at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. His 7.57/181.81 qualified #2 and he repeated that number in the first round, when his 7.57/181.81 beat Don Coonce. In round two, his 7.60/182.18 advanced when Jerry Eckman fouled against him, but in the semifinals, a 7.62/181.08 wasn't enough to beat Warren Johnson's 7.58/184. After running so well at Pomona, he had a bad outing at the NHRA Gatornationals. During qualifying, he ran a 7.68/181.23, but at the end of the run, the Firebird got airborne and flipped onto its roof. The car slid on its roof before coming to a stop. Nick was OK. |

Notes: Jeff was the eleventh alternate at the NHRA Gatornationals with a best of 7.59/180.36. At Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, a best of 7.63/180.63 also failed to make the show (ninth alternate). He did better at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, where his 7.70/180.68 best was the third alternate for the show. He made the field at the NHRA Springnationals, where his 7.589/181.89 qualified #10. His first-round 7.69/179.96 lost to Butch Leal's 7.59/182. He also qualified at the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada, where his 7.641/181.52 qualified #12. Jeff's 7.68/177.86 in the first round, advanced when Don Campanello fouled, and in round two, Joe Lepone also fouled against him, and Velde moved on with a 7.60/180.86. His run ended in the semifinals, where Leal's 7.54/184 put a stop to Jeff's 7.69/180.36. Unfortunately, it was back to not qualifying at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. There, his 7.61/181.23 was the sixth alternate. The team did not run at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, but they were back on tour at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. Things did not go well, as Velde's 7.74/178.60 was the ninth alternate for the show. Jeff also failed to qualify at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, where his 7.64/186.29 was the twenty-second alternate. He also ran 7.64 (at 181.15) in a non-qualifier (fourteenth alternate) at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. The best NHRA times were 7.572 at the World Finals and 186.29 at Indy (DNQ). Did Jeff run 7.541 somewhere this year? |

Notes: Frank ran a Ford on his own for one more year after the Bernstein deal fell through. This was actually a new 1987 car by Jerry Haas. Iaconio debuted the car at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals where he was the fourth alternate at 7.573/183.78. He also ran at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where his 7.645/182.80 failed to qualify. Frank also missed the fields at NHRA Englishtown (7.618/181.81) and Maple Grove (7.646/181.15). |

Notes: On April 21, 1985, Butch Leal became the first racer other than Bob Glidden, Warren Johnson, Lee Shepherd, or Frank Iaconio to win an NHRA Pro Stock national event since 1979. Leal's Castrol GTX Nationwise Pontiac Trans Am beat Glidden's 7/11 Chief Auto Parts Ford Thunderbird in the final round of the NHRA Southern Nationals in Atlanta, GA, 7.73/179.71 to 7.80/167.72. This was the first Pro Stock win for Pontiac in NHRA history. Runner-up to Bruce Allen at 1985 NHRA Mr. Gasket Pro Stock Challenge at Indy. | Butch had a very successful season in '85. He started the year at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #6 with a 7.67/179.35. Leal improved to a 7.63/180.65 in the first round, to beat Don Nicholson, while in round two, a 7.69/178.71 beat Lee Shepherd's quicker 7.66/179. He pushed the tree a little too hard in the semifinals and fouled away a 7.72/180.07 in a loss to Warren Johnson's 7.73/179. He qualified #3 at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 7.64/180.36. A 7.63/178.07 beat Rickie Smith in round one, but he lost to Dempsey Hardy in round two. Then came the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta. As mentioned above, he got Pontiac its first win in the Pro Stock category. He qualified #2 with a 7.67/181.45 (Top Speed) and then beat Smith, Ken Dondero, and Dave Hutchens. All fouled against him. He then met Glidden in the final to take his first NHRA Pro Stock title since 1973. The next NHRA event was the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge. Leal's 7.63/185.10 (Top Speed) qualified #4 in the field. Unfortunately, he fouled against Tony Christian in the first round. It was then on to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where Leal qualified #5 with a 7.67/180.94. He beat Hardy in the first round, with a 7.75/178.35 and then got a good light that saw his 7.73/178.92 take out low qualifier Glidden's 7.72/179. This put him into the semifinals, where his 7.74/178.42 lost to johnson's 7.66/180. He then followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. There he qualified #6 with a 7.60/183.00. In the opening round, Leal's 7.66/181.81 took out Sam Gianino's 7.80/175. Another 7.66 at 181.30 in round two beat Gordie Rivera's 7.76/179, and yet a third 7.66/181.81 beat Glidden's quicker and faster 7.62/182 in the semifinals. This put him into the final against low qualifier Bruce Allen. Butch improved to 7.62/182.70 in their race, but he finished runner-up to Allen's 7.55/183. The next stop was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Once again, he qualified #6, this time with a 7.62/180. He beat Gianino and Johnson in the first two rounds, and in the semifinal, Rivera broke on the line, and Leal's 7.69/178 advanced. It was a rematch of the Grandnats final with Allen that had the same results. Allen's 7.61/180 got the victory over Butch's 7.70/180.28. At the end of July, he was at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. An 8.02/171.75 qualified #4 and an 8.10/171.10 in the first round, beat Pete Smith. Dempsey Hardy fouled against him in round two, and Butch ran 8.04/171.75 to advance. He showed his driving skills in the semifinals, where he beat Johnson's 7.99/172 with his best run of the weekend, an 8.01/172.74. Leal was in another final round, but this time he faced the Ford of low qualifier Glidden. Bob had been running mid 7.9s all day, so Leal needed to get the jump. But it didn't happen; his 8.05/172.74 lost to Glidden's 7.95/172. It was Butch's third straight runner-up finish. At the NHRA Northstar Nationals, Leal's 7.71/182.18 qualified #5. An opening round 7.64/182.55 beat Gianino's 7.83/174, but he fouled away a 7.76 in round two against Glidden. He had to take the chance as Bob ran 7.60. |

Notes: Rickie was great with the big-inch IHRA Pro Stocks, but in NHRA Competition he was having a tough time just trying to qualify. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he was the second alternate with a best of 7.577/181.41. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he was the fourteenth alternate with a 7.611/181.89 best. He also ran 7.635/181.52 at Atlanta, 7.691/178.67 at Columbus, and 7.636/181.37 at Indy. None of these efforts qualified. Indy was Rickie's last NHRA event of the year. The car had white letters in a red field. Glidden had red letters in a white field. Photo from Gainesville 3/87. Formerly listed 7.532/183.29 but that did not occur on the NHRA circuit. We need validation. |

Notes: Ferra had nothing but problems at Gainesville while attempting to qualify for the NHRA Gatornationals. The best he could run was 9.06/167.91, far from the 7.41 "bump." Ralph was at Englishtown near the end of March for its Manufacturer's Pro Stock Showdown. It was an eight-car field, and he ended up as the first alternate with a 7.86/167.59. He also competed at the Super Stock Nationals at Maple Grove. A 7.68 qualified #7 in the eight-car field. He slowed to a losing 8.12/176.81 in the first round that lost to Joe Lepone's 7.63/182. Ralph ran several NHRA national events with best times from Sanair at 7.578/181.81. Photo from 1988 US Nationals. |

Notes: Joe was the first alternate at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He failed to qualify at Gainesville as well, where his 7.70/182.70 was the eighth alternate. He made the show at Atlanta for the Southern Nationals, where he qualified #14 with a 7.67/179.92, but he lost to Joe Lepone in the first round. Unfortunately, he failed to make the show at the next few races. A best of 7.82/178.14 was only good for the eighth alternate at the Cajun Nationals. At the Springnationals, his 7.76/179.31 was eight alternate again. The Super Stock Nationals was only an eight-car show, and he was the second alternate there. A 7.86/177.23 was the sixth alternate at the Grandnationals. At Englishtown for the Summernationals, he ran 7.63/180.36 for the seventh alternate. The bump was a 7.59, but these shows were tough to qualify at. He went to Denver for the Mile High Nationals and ran 8.04/170.03 to qualify #11. Joe must have been excited because, in the first round, he faced Butch Leal and fouled. He qualified at the next event as well, the Northstar Nationals in August, where he ran 7.72/179.28 for the #11 spot. He lost to Warren Johnson in the first round. At Indy for the US Nationals, he failed to qualify. After that, it was off to Maple Grove for the Keystone Nationals. He ran a strong 7.58/181.81 to qualify on the "bump" spot in the sixteen-car field. A first-round 7.63/180.32 lost to Leal's 7.54/183. He was the second alternate at the Chief Nationals with a best of 7.65/180.90. At the Fallnationals, a 7.76/178.28 was the sixth alternate. Wrecked this car in Minnesota. Photo from Indy 87. |

Notes: Clark ran a career-best (to this point) 7.63 at 179.14 to qualify #13 at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Unfortunately, he lost to Bruce Allen in the first round. He was the ninth alternate for the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta with a 7.73/179.49. In June, he qualified #7 for the eight-car field for the Super Stock Nationals with a 7.66/177.51. Clark ended up having a really good day. In the opening round, his 7.79/177.51 beat Frank Iaconio's very late 7.68/180. He then took out low qualifier Warren Johnson in the semi-final, where his 7.76/177.51 nipped WJ's 7.77/182. He then went up against Joe Lepone in the final, and Clark pushed the tree a little too hard and fouled away a 7.74/176.81 while Lepone got the victory with a 7.62/181. Best NHRA ET was a 7.589 that qualified #13 at Indy 1986. Joe was actually quicker than his opponent in round one but lost to a Butch Leal holeshot and a 7.601 to Joe's 7.597. His best NHRA national event speed was 181.37 at Englishtown (and repeated at Maple Grove). Listed speed from Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9, but that did not occur at an NHRA national event. |
