Notes: Ken swapped into Ronnie Manchester's car for a few late-season races. He was driving this car at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. Twenty-nine cars were attempting to qualify, and his 7.626/181.52 qualified #10. Despite running well, a 7.671/179.49 in the first round lost to WJ's 7.57/183. According to our records, Ken was back in the Dondero car at the Phoenix Fallnationals. He qualified #3 at 7.670/179.28. Ken best Gordie Rivera in round one, 7.766/177.86 to 8.355/130.43. In round two, he beat Frank Sanchez, 7.756/178.21 to 7.866/176.12. In the semis, Bob Glidden got the better of Ken, 7.671/180.36 to 7.804/177.86. Ken was driving a Trans Am at the World Finals at Pomona. We must validate whether this was the Ronnie Manchester car or a new Panella machine. He qualified #3 at 7.635/181.30. He broke in round one, but Dave Hutchens fouled, so Ken advanced. In round two, he beat Pete Smith, 7.721/179.71 to 7.867/178.07. Ken lost a close one to Bruce Allen in the semis, 7.652/181.23 to 7.678/180.21. We are listing the Finals times with the Ronnie Manchester car for now, but we need confirmation. At this time, we are listing the 7.670 from Phoenix with this car, although there is a possibility there was a new Dondero Trans Am that should get those times, plus those from the World Finals. Who can answer this mystery?

Notes: WJ entered the season strong as he had won the season-ending NHRA World Finals in '83 and was looking for more in '84. At the season-opening NHRA Winternationals at Pomona, he qualified #3 with a 7.71. Johnson lasted until the semifinals before he fouled against Frank Iaconio. Still, he set Top Speed of the meet for the Pro Stock class at 180.36. He showed his stuff at Gainesville in March for the NHRA Gatornationals, there a 7.662/181.81 qualified #4, and he went on to win. A 7.682/182.55 (Top Speed and a new NHRA record) beat a fouling Johnny Downey. His 7.677/181.45 took out Don Campanello, who also fouled in round two. In the semifinals, WJ slowed to 7.747/172.74, but it was still enough to beat Butch Leal's 7.75/175. This put him into the final against Iaconio. Warren made his best run of the weekend, a 7.643/180.72, to get the victory over Frank's 7.73/180. Atlanta was the next stop on the NHRA tour for the Southern Nationals. WJ set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 7.70/181.81. In round one, he beat Mark Yuill with a 7.75/179.64, but he lost to Lee Shepherd in round two. It was not without controversy as Shepherd's Camaro lost its hood on the run. Warren insisted on having the car weighed to assure that it still weighed in at the legal 2,350 lbs. Even without the hood, the Texas Camaro was legal. He was the top qualifier again at the NHRA Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge with a 7.65 (Low ET) at 181.45. Unfortunately, he lost to Roy Hill in the first round. He had Low ET and Top Speed at the NHRA Springnationals while qualifying #1 with a 7.71/181.08. But once again, he lost early; this time, Gordie Rivera gated him in the second round, and his 7.83 beat Johnson's quicker 7.74. These early losses would come back to haunt Warren and the end of the year for the points championship. He pulled it all together at the NHRA Grandnationals, where a 7.68/182.55 (Low ET and Top Speed) qualified #1. He beat Joe Lepone, Ken Dondero, and Don Coonce to meet with Bob Glidden in the final. Bob's T-Bird was getting stronger as the year progressed, and in the final, his 7.69/180 narrowly lost to WJ's 7.68/182.18. At the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown, Warren was finally out-qualified for the first time in four races. His 7.68/180.72 (Top Speed) was second only to Glidden's 7.67. He beat Rich Marino in round one, before losing to Shepherd in the second round. WJ was back on top at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, where he set an 8.02 track record at 172.74 in qualifying #1. He beat Gene Fasching, Leal, and in the semifinals, he beat Glidden's 8.13/169 with an 8.06/171.10. In the finals, he met Shepherd. This was Johnson's day as he won with an 8.07/171.75 over Lee's 8.14/166. In August, Warren took his eighth NHRA National victory at the Northstar Nationals at Brainerd. He had "only" qualified #3 with a 7.76/181.08 (Top Speed), but he beat Jerry Eckman, Coonce, and Glidden to meet Shepherd again in the final. It was a good race, but Lee's 7.76/177 finished runner-up to Johnson's 7.75/180.36. He was sure closing the points gap between himself and Shepherd with his late-season surge, and it continued at the NHRA US Nationals. He qualified #2 with a 7.66/182.18, and he improved to 7.63 in the first round, over Coonce. In round two, a 7.64/182.18 beat Ronnie Manchester, and in the semis, another 7.63 beat Rivera. In the final, he faced Glidden. Bob had been running about a tenth slower in eliminations, but in the final, he picked up to a 7.65/180 that almost beat WJ's 7.63/181.45. Surprisingly, for only the third NHRA National event of '84, Warren failed to get Top Speed of the meet. It looked like he had a good chance of winning the NHRA Pro Stock Championship going into the World Finals with a 42 point advantage over Shepherd. A 7.75/181.08 qualified #5, but things took an unexpected turn in the first round. Matched against Rickie Smith, the Oldsmobile could only muster a 7.97/175.09 that lost to Smith's 7.89/174. The season and any hopes for the '84 world championship came to a close. Still, it was an excellent season for WJ, his best since entering Pro Stock with five wins and a second-place finish in the points standings. Photo from Baton Rouge 84, where WJ was the low qualifier.

Notes: Photo from Ennis. Listed times from Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. | At Pomona, Gene's best of 7.81/176.12 failed to qualify for the NHRA Winternationals. He was the eighth alternate. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified on the "bump" with a 7.66/180.94. Fasching improved to a 7.64/181.29 in the first round, that beat Frank Iaconio's T-Bird. In the second round, he slowed to a 7.71/179.49 that lost to Gordie Rivera's 7.61/175. He failed to make the show at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals where he was fourth alternate with a 7.69/180.00 best. He skipped Baton Rouge, but was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Unfortunately, his best of 7.74/176.53 was fifth alternate. It wasn't until the NHRA Mile High Nationals before Gene qualified at another national event. At Denver his 8.11/168.76 qualified on the "bump" spot. An 8.25/166.05 lost in the first round, to Rivera's 8.07/170. Fasching ran NHRA Brainerd MN 8/86 (DNQ). He tried hard to qualify at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, but his 7.70/181.48 fell short (tenth alternate). He was the ninth alternate at the Texas Motorplex for the NHRA Chief Nationals with a 7.75/178.42 best.

Notes: Mark attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but he was the seventh alternate with a best of 7.822/178.92. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he was the fourth alternate with a 7.807/178.64 best, and at the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta, his best of 7.853/180.21 was the fourth alternate for the show. He failed to qualify at the NHRA Cajun Nationals with a 7.766/178.85 second alternate effort, and the NHRA Springnationals, where he was the thirteenth alternate with a 7.926/167.97 best. These non-qualifying efforts being shown are not to take anything away from Mark; it was just the opposite as 34 cars attempted to qualify at the Springnationals. Being the fourth or the fifth alternate for these shows was impressive due to the caliber of competition. Things went great in Canada, where he qualified (#8) in the top half of the show with a 7.637/181.08. He slowed two-tenths in the first round, to 7.831/177.65 and lost to Ronnie Manchester's 7.76/178. He failed to qualify at the NHRA Summernationals with a 7.770/177.51 fourth alternate effort, but he made the show at the NHRA Mile High Nationals, where his 8.154/168.53 qualified #13. He got his first-round win of the year when Dave Hutchens fouled against him in the first round, and Mark's 8.304/166.66 advanced. In round two, he fouled away an 8.316/166.35 against the eventual winner Bob Glidden's 7.97/172. Rodenberg was the second alternate at the NHRA Northstar Nationals with a best of 7.866/177.16, and at the NHRA US Nationals, his 7.806/178.21 best made him the seventh alternate. He was one of thirteen cars that failed to qualify at the NHRA Keystone Nationals, where his 7.749/179.28 was good for the fifth alternate. At the NHRA Fallnationals, he qualified #14 with a 7.844/177.86, but a 7.964/170.45 in round one, lost to Don Coonce's 7.84/174. Back at Pomona for the NHRA World Finals, Mark ended the season with a 7.893 at a booming 186.01 that failed to qualify (eighth alternate).

Notes: Musi was a long-time Chevy match racer who liked big, big engines. He was very competitive in IHRA competition in the late seventies with a series of Monzas and later, Camaros. It was surprising to see him return to NHRA in such a big way for '87. At the NHRA Gatornationals, his best of 7.68/180.75 failed to crack the 7.53 "bump." He then went to Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals where his 7.82/179.03 best was good for the twentieth alternate. He was the fifteenth alternate at the NHRA Cajun Nationals, running a best of 7.83/176.26. The trend continued at the NHRA Springnationals, where his 7.74/178.67 was good for the fifteenth alternate. The team hit their best times at the World Finals at 7.637/181.12.

Notes: Ken's best ET is and best confirmed speed is listed in his 1987 Camaro entry. We formerly listed 7.625/184.95 for this car, but Ken did not run either of those numbers in NHRA competition. He ran the Trans Am at least through Englishtown, where he was a 7.644/182.66 DNQ. He ran 7.678/184.01 at the NHRA Grandnational Molson. He ran quicker at Indy, going 7.545/184.12, but was that in the Trans Am or the new Camaro? He also ran 7.649/181.89 at the Winternationals. Car was the former Willie Underwood

They improved mightily at Indy, running 7.647/185.45 for the #20 alternate slot (with a field of 52 cars!). R.J. Ran 7.717/180.57 at Phoenix for the Fallnationals, ending up in the #12 alternate slot. At the Pomona Finals, they found the 7.60s again with a 7.646/181.85 for the 19th slot in the field. The team came out at the Pomona Winters in 1988, but that was the end of R.J.'s Pro Stock career.

Notes: Frank came close to winning the 1983 NHRA Pro Stock championship but lost to a controversial run at the World Finals. After qualifying number one at 7.650, the points leader was upset by Reid Whisnant in round one. Whisnant clocked a stunning 7.620, the quickest run ever by a Pro Stocker in NHRA competition, after running 7.80s all year. | Frank won the season-opening NHRA Winternationals at Pomona. He qualified #2 with a 7.83. A 7.80/175.43 beat Mark Yuill in the first round, while a 7.79 (Low ET and a new track record) at 175.43 beat Rickie Smith's 7.96/173. He slowed to a 7.83 in the semifinals, but it was still enough to beat Whisnant's 8.05. He ran low qualifier Bob Glidden in his new T-Bird in the final. Iaconio won with a 7.81/175.78 over Glidden's off pace 7.99/174. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #4 with a 7.71/180.00. Once again, he worked his way to the final by first beating Bubba Corzine with a 7.69 and then Don Campanello with an even better 7.67. He stayed tough in the semifinals, beating Smith with a 7.68. That set up a final-round meeting with Lee Shepherd's low qualifying Camaro. Lee had run as well as 7.64 during eliminations, and that might have been on Frankie's mind in the final, as he bulbed with a 7.75/180.36 while Lee scored the victory with a 7.68/180. In April, Atlanta hosted the NHRA Southern Nationals, and Frank headed the Pro Stock show with a 7.80/178.92 (Low ET and Top Speed). He got out of shape and lost to Whisnant in round two. On May 1, Maple Grove held its US Manufacturer's Pro Stock Championships. Iaconio set the meet's Low ET at a new track record 7.80, and he also had Top Speed at 178.51. Unfortunately, in round two, he got out of shape and shut off to an 8.08/159.57 that lost to Bob Ingle's 7.97/171. He had another runner-up finish to Shepherd at the NHRA Cajun Nationals. He qualified #2 behind Warren Johnson before losing to Lee in the final. The next NHRA race was the Springnationals in mid-June. Frank qualified #3 with a 7.79/177.16. Again, he worked his way to the final by running 7.85, 7.84, and 7.83 over Sam Gianino, Joe Lepone Jr., and Don Coonce in that order before meeting Glidden in the final. It was a rematch of the Winternationals final, only this time Bob's 7.79/178 prevailed over Iaconio's 7.83/174.08. Another runner-up finish came in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #2 behind Glidden and worked his way to the final, fouling against Shepherd. Frank always ran well at the NHRA Summernationals, and '83 was no exception. He set a new track record 7.73 while qualifying #1. His speed on the run was 178.92. In the first round, he beat Lepone's 7.89/175 with a 7.76/178.21. In the second round, he ran identical times to beat Johnson's Cutlass at 7.78/178. In the semifinals, he slowed to a 7.80/177.51, but it easily covered Butch Leal's 8.02. It was Frank against Lee in the final, and this time Shepherd must have felt that Iaconio had the upper hand as he fouled away a 7.78 while Frank motored to a 7.85/177.16 for the win. He did not race at Denver for the NHRA Mile-High Nationals, but he was at Martin, Michigan's US 131 for the PHR Championships. He set Low ET while qualifying #1 for the eight-car show with a 7.65 at 180.72. He made his way to the final, where he faced #2 qualifier Johnson. Warren knew Frank was tough, so he pushed the tree a little too hard and fouled. Iaconio won with a 7.72/183.29 (Top Speed). He found himself in another final round at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. He qualified #2 behind Shepherd's 7.74 with a 7.76/178.57. A 7.84 in round one beat Roy Hill's Capri. In round two, his 7.87/176 dropped Don Campanello, while a holeshot 7.88/175 beat a quicker WJ at 7.83. But in the final, it was Frank who lost to a holeshot by Glidden. Bob's 7.87/176 beat Frank's quicker 7.85/176.81. The next race on the NHRA schedule was the US Nationals at Indy. Iaconio ran 7.75/178.57 to qualify third behind Glidden and Shepherd. In the opening round, he improved to 7.74/181.81 to defeat Andy Mannarino's 7.92/176. He stopped Smith's 7.81/176 in round two with a 7.77/177.86 before losing a tight battle with Glidden in the semifinal that saw both drivers run 7.74 (Iaconio at 177). Frank's best NHRA national event numbers came at Fremont at 7.650/182.18. He then duplicated the 7.650 at the World Finals.

Notes: Stanley was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, where he was the twelfth alternate with a 7.95/175.09. Alamo Dragway held an eight-car show on August 10 during the NHRA Division Four race. Bill's 7.87/174.41 qualified second to Carl Bell's 7.87/178. He beat Willie Frank in the opening round with a 7.97/172.41. In the semi-final, he ran 8.09/172.34 and defeated Frank Sicinski's 8.20/169. In the final, his 8.04/164.53 finished runner-up to Mark Bramhall's 7.92/166. Bill was the sixth alternate at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals with a 7.650/182.85. Those were the team's best NHRA times of the year. They also raced at Gainesville, Baton Rouge, Ennis, and Phoenix. | We used the silver, tangerine & candy apple red colors in our race car. - Danny White

Notes: Frank qualified for his first NHRA National event at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He had run 7.72 and 7.75 in qualifying, and the 7.72 at 179.21 held up for the #11 spot in the show. Unfortunately, he lost to Don Coonce in the first round. After running so well there, it was surprising that he failed to qualify at the NHRA Gatornationals, where his 7.78/178.64 best was good for the first alternate. He followed the NHRA tour to Atlanta for the Southern Nationals, but he failed to make the show again. His 7.85/176.40 was the fifth alternate. He went to Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, and during qualifying, he made slight contact with the guardrail. Sanchez got it fixed and managed to qualify on the "bump" with a 7.76/181.81. In the first round, he got out of shape and shut off to 9.70 in a loss to Ken Dondero. The NHRA Springnationals had 34 cars attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field. Frank tried hard, but his 7.81/177.79 best was good for the fifth alternate. He was the second alternate in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals.
