Notes: Midwest Pro Stock Association, UDRA, NHRA. Ran two NHRA national events. DNQ at Atlanta at 8.872/119.52, and then DNQ at Indy at 8.096/170.46. This car was built and on the track before the Exdide Edge cars. It was the first NHRA pro stock car with a funny car cage. When we went to Brainerd 1988, NHRA did not allow us to go through tech because they didn't know what do with a a funny car cage in a Pro Stock car. We eventually had to add some more tubing and then we could race. - Jeff Wick, Draglist LIVE, 11/08/21

Notes: Butch opened some eyes at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals when he qualified #1 with a 7.684 (Low ET) at 177.86. He beat Ken Dondero in the first round with a 7.71/174.75, but he lost to Frank Iaconio in the second round where his tire-shaking, shut off 9.15/104.52 fell to Frank's 7.92/168. At the NHRA Gatornationals, a 7.69/180.36 qualified #6. He beat John Brumley with a 7.75/178.92 and a 7.84/177.86 advanced past Roy Hill's broken Capri in round two. He had a close race in the semifinals with the meet's eventual winner Warren Johnson. Leal's 7.75/175.08 lost to WJ's 7.74/172. The next NHRA race was at Atlanta for the Southern Nationals. There, a 7.76/178.57 qualified #4. Butch beat Jerry Eckman in the first round before losing to Dondero in round two. He qualified #4 again at the NHRA Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge with a 7.70/179.28. This time he made it all the way to the final. His 7.79/179 advanced when Don Campanello fouled in the opening round. Leal's 7.81/177 beat "Dyno Don" Nicholson's ailing Olds in round two. A 7.86/178 stopped Iaconio in the semifinal. He went against the Texas Camaro of Lee Shepherd in the final, and he gambled on the 'tree and lost, fouling away a 7.81/177.86 while Lee got the victory with a 7.75/181. The NHRA Springnationals was not very good for the Nationwise team; Leal lost in the first round. Another early loss came at the NHRA Grandnationals. Leal qualified well with a 7.75/177.86 (#6), but he failed even to reach the semifinals. That continued at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, a good 7.73 qualified #7, but he lost to Sam Carroll in the first round. After qualifying #5 with an 8.16/168.53 at the NHRA Mie High Nationals, he beat Roy Hill in round one with an 8.20/166.97. But in round two, he lost to the eventual winner, Warren Johnson. Butch ran a decent 8.17/165.13, but WJ's 8.09/170 had him covered. Brainerd saw more of the same; he qualified #6 but lost to Shepherd in round two. At Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals, he ran an excellent 7.69/179.64 to qualify #3, but a 7.84/175.09 in the first round, lost to Dondero's 7.79/181. Things changed for the team at the season-ending NHRA World Finals at Pomona. More people would have noticed Leal if it weren't for Bob Glidden's dominating performance. He qualified #2 with a 7.69/179.64 and shut off to an 8.01/149.25 win in round one when Ronnie Manchester fouled. A 7.76/178.92 in round two beat Reid Whisnant's Mopar, while in the semifinals, a 7.74/180.00 advanced when Don Coonce fouled against him. This put Leal in the final against Glidden. But it was Glidden's day, and Butch's 7.81/162.45 finished runner-up to Bob's 7.61/181. Bob Riffle was the co-crew chief, and Dale Eicke did cylinder head and intake manifold development.

Notes: Garrett was the first alternate at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a best of 7.77/177.79. He made the field at the NHRA Gatornationals, qualifying #15 with a 7.75/176.53. In the first round, he fouled away a 7.77 against Dempsey Hardy's 7.72. Atlanta was NHRA's next stop for the Southern Nationals, and Charlie qualified on the "bump" with a 7.84/174.68. Once again, he fouled in the first round, this time running 7.90, while Gordie Rivera advanced with a 7.84. He failed to qualify for the NHRA Springnationals, where his 7.80/175.57 was the third alternate. He made a stop at Maple Grove in June for the Super Stock Nationals, where he qualified #5 in the eight-car show with a 7.82. Unfortunately, he faced low qualifier Warren Johnson in the first round, and his 7.85 lost to Johnson's 7.61. Early in July, he won over an eight-car field at Suffolk. Garrett had run 7.95 to qualify #2, but he picked up to 7.88/173.41 in the first round, to beat Sam Carroll. In the semifinals, a 7.87/173.67 beat Stan Mizell, and in the final, he set Low ET with a 7.86 at 173.41 to beat Joe Anderson's 7.98/172 for the victory. He then went to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where his 7.84 best failed to qualify. He skipped the NHRA Mile High Nationals and the Northstar Nationals, but he was back on tour for the US Nationals at Indy. 45 cars attempted to qualify for the sixteen-car field, and Garrett's 7.79/177.30 was one of the 29 cars that failed to qualify. He ran well at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals, where he used a 7.68/180.21 to qualify #15. A first-round 7.69/177.16 beat alternate Lee Dean, but he hurt the car and could not show for his round two race against Bruce Allen.

Notes: Photo from Milan, MI, 1985. Roy qualified #14 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.685/181.81. A first-round 7.69/179.64 lost to Jerry Eckman's 7.63/176. He failed to qualify at the NHRA Gatornationals, running 7.770/177.69. After that, he didn't attend any other NHRA events until the World Finals, instead concentrating on the "big inch" match races and IHRA events. He was a 7.729/178.89 DNQ at the Pomona Finals, but was that in the Tempo or another car (possibly the Pennys’ Firenza out of Chicago)?

Notes: Doug Williams second car Texas Pro Stock Association. Mark was at Houston in October for the Armadillo Nationals. He qualified #1 with a 7.81/174.41. It was an eight-car show, but only seven showed so Mark got the "odd-lot" solo in the first round, and ran 7.87/165.44. In the semifinals, his 7.84/173.09 lost to Carl Bell's 7.76/183. His next stop was at the Texas Motorplex for the fifth Texas Pro Stock Association race. A career best 7.69 at 178.67 qualified #2 behind teammate Bell's 7.53. A 7.97/166.29 in the first round, beat Frank Sicinski and a semifinal 7.75/163.19 beat Bobby Burns. In the final he faced Kim Barr and another 7.69/170.71 got the victory over Kim's 7.82/169.

Notes: After having Dick Landy building his engines in '84, starting with the season opener at Pomona, Roy was now running engines built by Jon Kaase. Hill ran 7.692/182.11 to qualify ninth at the NHRA Winternats, but he fouled away a 7.73/180.36 against Glidden in the first round. At the Gatornationals, 48 cars attempted to qualify for the sixteen-car show. The bump spot was a 7.76, and Roy's best of 7.80/178.07 failed to make the field(third alternate). The third NHRA event of the season was the Southern Nationals in Atlanta. Hill ran 7.82/176.60 to qualify #11, but a first-round 7.86/177.23 lost to Bruce Allen's 7.71/179. At Baton Rouge for the fourth NHRA National event, the Cajun Nationals, Roy was the third alternate with a 7.77/178.64. A 7.79/178.64 was the first alternate at Columbus for the Springnationals with a 7.79/176.64. He qualified eleventh at 7.71 at the NHRA Summernats. He lost in the first round, to Allen. He grabbed a win at the Pro Stock Open at Maryland International. At the Mile High Nationals in Denver, Hill's 8.19/169.17 qualified #14, but he lost early. Hill lost three engines due to a broken shifter pin trying to qualify for the US Nats, but his 7.79/178.63 best wasn't enough to make the field. He also qualified for the NHRA World finals with a 7.75/179.78, which was fourteenth, but he lost in the first round. In November, he debuted his '86 car with a win at the Snowbird Nats, running 7.91, 7.88, 7.77, and a final round 7.80. The Pomona Winters times were Roy's best of the year.

Notes: Gianino was the twelfth alternate at the NHRA Cajun Nationals at Baton Rough with a 7.81/177.13 best. In mid-June, he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. He ended up as the seventh alternate with a 7.69/178.57 best. Sam attempted to qualify at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, but his best of 8.18/162.30 was a long way from making the field.

Notes: Ken ran 7.772/178.57 to qualify #9 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He faced low qualifier Butch Leal in the first round, and his 7.838/178.21 finished second best to Leal's 7.71. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #7 with a 7.734/177.51. Ken had an unusual race in the first round. He raced alternate Reid Whisnant, who got into the field when Sam Carroll broke in qualifying. Dondero ran a 7.814/175.78 in their first-round race, but Reid recorded an unreal (maybe too unreal) 7.615 at only 174.41 to win. Observers suspected a rear-wheel start (the rear wheel broke the beam instead of the front). In the second round, Reid slowed to a 7.89 loss. It was a fabulously close race - Dondero's .450 to .646 holeshot meant that only .003 seconds separated the cars at the finish line! Pretty sure Ken wasn't too happy about it. And Reid's 7.615 was not equaled again on the NHRA national event trail until the end of the year when Bob Glidden duplicated it. The third NHRA event was the Southern Nationals at Atlanta, where a 7.830/178.92 qualified Ken in the #8 spot. He advanced past round one with a 7.88/176.47 when Roy Hill fouled against him. In round two, he beat Leal with a 7.833/177.51, but in the semifinals, he lost to Don Campanello., who stepped up to a 7.835 to hold off Ken's 7.869/176.47. This was another heartbreaker - Dondero again got the holeshot, .480 to .510, and the end result was a .004 second win for Campanello The next stop on the NHRA tour was at Baton Rouge for the Cajun Nationals. A 7.773/177.86 qualified #7, but a 7.886/177.16 in the opening round of eliminations lost to Mark Yuill's quick-leaving 7.945/173.07 (a margin of victory of .034 seconds). Dondero then stopped off at Capitol raceway to win its Pro Stock Shootout event. He beat Ronnie Manchester in the final. He was at Martin, Mich, for the PHR Championships, where he ran 7.73 to qualify #3. Once again, he lost out early, back on the NHRA trail for the Springnationals. He qualified #8 at 7.843/177.86. Ken won round one over Andy Mannarino (7.814/173.47 to 7.939/174.08) and made it into round two, losing to Mark Yuill again when he ran an off-pace 9-second run. Shortly after that, he picked up a win at the Super Stock Nationals held at Maple Grove. It was an eight-car show, and his 7.73/179.28 qualified #2 behind WJ's 7.69/180. Ken ran another 7.73 in the first round, to take out Joe Anderson and a semifinal 7.75 stopped the only Mopar in the show, Reid Whisnant's. He faced Don Campanello in the final, and Dondero was like a bracket racer, running 7.75/177.16 to win over Don's 7.80/174. Another second-round loss came at the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada, where Ken qualified #5 with a 7.725/180.36. Ken beat Roy Hill in round one, 7.764/179.28 to 7.89/177, but he lost to eventual winner WJ in round two, 7.720/181.81 to 7.781/178.92. He qualified third at the NHRA Summernationals with a 7.704/180.00, but he got upset in the first round, by Manchester, 7.74/177 to 7.830/177.51. He did not go to Denver. Ken qualified #9 at Brainerd with a 7.850/175.78. That put him up against Bob Glidden in round one, and Bob got the win, 7.73/178, to Ken's 7.823/177.16. At the US Nationals at Indy, his 7.778/182.55 qualified #11. In round one, Ken's 7.793/181.08 beat Butch Leal's 7.84/175. He cut a good light in round two, and his 7.822/180.00 held on to win over Joe Lepone's quicker 7.798/177 (.025 second margin of victory). His run ended in the semifinals, where Bob Glidden's 7.72 beat his 7.825/176.81. In October, he ran a 7.766/178.92 to qualify eighth at the NHRA World Finals. Amazingly, Mark Yuill got another massive holeshot on him in round one, and eeked out the win, 7.850/174.41 to 7.758/179.28 (.005 seconds margin of victory). Ken had so many close, close races that he either won or lost on holeshots. A great showing for the Panella Racing team in 1984; they finished 7th in the NHRA.

Notes: Gene qualified #13 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.73/177.51. He lost to Gordie Rivera in the first round. He was the eighth alternate at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 7.82/175.78 best. Things went better at Atlanta, where his 7.81/176.40 qualified #9. Unfortunately, qualifying #9 set up a first-round meeting with the low qualifier, Warren Johnson. Fasching's 7.93/172.02 finished second best in that race to WJ's 7.73/181.

Notes: Mark had trouble at Pomona during qualifying for the NHRA Winternationals. On an 8.030/172.41 pass, his throttle hung open and he ended up hitting the guardrail. He didn't return to the tour until the July Bandimere race where he was the third alternate at 8.218/164.11. Mark was the sixth alternate at Ennis Fall at 7.706/175.00, and the fourth alternate at Phoenix Fall at 7.739/174.21. He finished the season as the 11th alternate at the Pomona Finals at 7.748/176.67.
