Notes: Cifarelli was the sixteenth alternate for the NHRA Winternationals at 8.045/176.36, and at the NHRA Gatornationals, his 7.709/181.15 best was far from the 7.53 "bump." Ralph attempted to qualify at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, but his 7.771/180.32 best was good for the seventeenth alternate. He was also one of 34 cars that showed up at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals in May, but once away, his 7.817/178.21 failed to qualify (thirteenth alternate). Columbus was no different for the NHRA Springnationals. Ralph was the seventeenth alternate at 7.781/179.31. He was the 20th alternate at Englishtown at 7.736/180.39. That was his last NHRA national event of the season. Ralph ran this car for one year. DNQ NHRA Pomona CA 2/87 | DNQ NHRA Gainesville FL 3/87 |

Notes: Rickie was the strongest running Ford on the IHRA Circuit, and for '85, he wanted to try to make it into more NHRA shows. In January, he went to Firebird Raceway and tested his car during the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. Rickie's best was 7.78/178. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he just made the field, running 7.77/179.64 for the "bump spot.” He did OK in the first round, where he stepped up to a quick-leaving 7.71/178.64, beating Ronnie Manchester's quicker 7.69/179. In the second round, his 7.75/176.26 lost to Warren Johnson's 7.69/179. He qualified #11 at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 7.74/180.36, but in the first round, he shut down early to 8.92/112.78 and lost to Butch Leal's 7.63/178. Smith was one of four Fords to qualify at the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta. 32 cars attempted to make the field, and Rickie's 7.82/177.86 qualified #10. He shaved the light too close and fouled in the first round, slowing to 8.04 in a loss to Leal's 7.74. At the NHRA Cajun Nationals, his 7.76/180.36 was good for the first alternate. He also failed to make the show at the NHRA Springnationals, where his 7.82/177.16 was the sixth alternate, and in Canada for the Grandnationals, where he was the first alternate with a best of 7.72/179.64. Things went better at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where he qualified #15 with a 7.74, but he went out early in eliminations. From there, he went to Maryland International for the Pro Stock Open event, where he finished runner-up to Roy Hill. He skipped the NHRA Mile High Nationals in Denver and the NHRA Northstar Nationals, but he was at Indy for the US Nationals. A best of 7.81/178.92 failed to make the 7.76 "bump.” Rickie did not attend the next two NHRA events (Keystone Nats and Fallnats), but he was back at Pomona for the World Finals, where his 7.83/176.95 was good for the fifth alternate. |

Notes: Smarty Pants name came from George's daughter. When she was two years old, they put her doll on the car and the name stuck. It was unofficially the name of all his cars, but sometimes was prominent. Did George run from 1987 to 1992? |

Notes: Bubba Corzine had a good year in '83. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #9 with a 7.90/173.74. Unfortunately, he faced low qualifier, Bob Glidden, in round one, and his 8.01/172.08 lost to Bob's 7.86/174. At the Gatornationals, a 7.804/177.51 qualified #12, and in the opening round, he fouled away a 7.83 against Frank Iaconio who advanced with a 7.69. He stopped off at Green Valley Raceway on April 10 for a four-car show. Corzine set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 7.72/178.92. In the opening round, his 7.87/175.43 beat Chuck Nuyten's 8.16/168, and in the final, his 7.86/176.12 picked up the victory over Eddie Conrad's 8.12/168. The Southern Nationals at Atlanta featured only an eight-car field. Bubba was able to run 7.85/175.78 to qualify #6, but he fouled away a 7.92 in the opening round against the eventual winner Lee Shepherd, who advanced with a 7.85/172. He also lost to Shepherd in the first round at the NHRA Cajun Nationals, where he fouled again. He qualified #7 in the eight-car field with a 7.85/175.09. Shepherd continued to have Corzine's number at the next NHRA event, the Springnationals. There Bubba's 7.92/175.09 qualified #9, and that forced him to run Shepherd, who qualified #1 in the first round. Corzine pushed the tree a little too hard and fouled away a 7.94, while Lee moved on with a 7.86. He then made a stop at St.Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. He qualified #3 in the sixteen car field with a 7.93/176.13, and he lasted until round two where the car broke. He did not attend the Grandnationals, but he was at Englishtown for the Summernationals. There a 7.97/172.74 qualified #12. In the first round, his 7.94/173.41 fell to Don Coonce's 7.87/174. A couple of weeks later, he was at Denver for the Mile High Nationals. It was another eight-car show, and his 8.39/164.23 qualified #7 in the thin air. An opening round 8.38/162.16 lost to Warren Johnson's 8.22/170. The next stop on the NHRA tour was the Northstar Nationals at Brainerd. Once again, Corzine qualified well, running an 8.01/171.42 for the #13 spot. He lost to Coonce in the opening round. Bubba's Gatornationals times were the best NHRA national event times of the year. | Sharp Chaparral outfit at the '82 Finals. In '83 they came back with Tharp, Schultz, and a Swindahl. - Joe Moore |

Notes: Bill raced at several NHRA national events but did not qualify at any. He ran at Gainesville, 7.850/176.67, Columbus, 7.815/171.82, and Englishtown, 7.772/175.57. Bill was the seventeenth alternate at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals with a 7.768/178.85. Shortly after that, he was at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. His 7.806/176.50 was the twelfth alternate. He was the seventeenth alternate at the NHRA Chief Nationals with a 7.914/174.04. Listed times from The Drag Racing List, Volume 1, Number 9, December 86/January 87. The 7.722 might be that Englishtown number misrecorded. I may have witnessed the 182 at MIR's US Pro Stock Open. We need to confirm. - BP |

Notes: Dyno Don was driving Ken Thurm's Pontiac at the Pomona Winters. He went about four-tenths better than Ken had ever gone, but the team was 13 spots outside the field at 7.722/175.23. That was Don's only NHRA national event in 1987. |

Notes: After running a Ford in '64, Butch Leal switched to Mopars from '65-'69 before briefly running a Pro Stock Mustang for Mickey Thompson. After that, it didn't pan out. He raced a Camaro Pro Stock for the rest of '70 and into '71. While the car did record the first west coast "nine's" from a Chevy, it was still not competitive with the Mopars, so he had a new state-of-the-art Duster built for '71. If it wasn't for Bill Jenkins's dominance that season, Leal's Duster would have been the car to beat at any race. Leal stayed will the Mopar camp until the end of '82, when he signed on with the Rod Shop team to build their new Firebird Pro Stock. The car debuted at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals using Chevy power. He qualified #11 with a 7.94/176.81, but he lost to Roy Hill in the opening round. Leal attempted to qualify at Gainesville for the Gatornationals, but a best of 7.89/171.42 just missed the 7.88 bump. At the NHRA Springnationals, Leal showed up with a new Bob Ingles-built engine. He qualified #8 with a 7.91/174.08, and in the first round, he beat John Brumley with a 7.93/173.74. In the second round, Alan Marsh fouled, and Butch's 7.98/163.93 advanced. In the semifinals, a 7.92/173.74 lost to Bob Glidden's 7.85/177. As the year went on, Leal's times kept improving, and by the NHRA Summernationals in July, he was regularly qualifying in the top half of the field. At Englishtown, a 7.88/173.41 qualified #7. He beat Reid Whisnant and Glidden in the first two rounds before losing to Frank Iaconio's 7.80 in the semifinal with an 8.02. He didn't race at the NHRA Mile High Nationals. At the US Nationals, he qualified #10 with a 7.86/174.41, but his 7.91/173.41 lost to Lee Shepherd's 7.72/177 in the first round. The times really improved by October for the NHRA Golden Gate Nationals. Leal qualified #5 in the eight-car field with a 7.72/177.16. Unfortunately, being number five in an eight-car show meant that he had to run the low qualifier in the first round. In this case, it was Iaconio who ran a 7.70/177 to put Leal's 7.80/177.16 on the trailer. At the season-ending NHRA World Finals, another 7.72/178.18 qualified #6. A first-round 7.77/176.12 beat Fred Taylor's 7.88, but a second-round 7.81/175.78 lost to Shepherd's 7.68/177. Still, he just cracked the top ten in the season-long NHRA points chase. |

Notes: Alban attempted to qualify at the NHRA Grandnationals, but he was the fifth alternate with a 7.80/177.79 best. At the NHRA US Nationals, he again tried to make the show, but his 7.725/183.07 best was the fourteenth alternate. Originally listed a 7.71. We need confirmation of that number. |

Notes: Pete raced a Trans Am early in the season and then came out with this former Reher Morrison Camaro. Pete was the second alternate at Pomona at 7.725/173.74 and the 12th alternate at Gainesville at 7.770/173.74. He then ran 7.821/174.48 at Atlanta (now in the Camaro) and was the second alternate at Baton Rouge at 7.754/177.33 back in the Firebird. Those were Pete's only NHRA national event appearances this year. Did Pete run 7.565/184 in this car? |

Notes: Gauthier was the tenth alternate at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 7.88/173.41. Alban attempted to qualify at the NHRA Grandnationals, but his 7.74/177.23 best was good for the third alternate. His Firebird was awarded the best appearing car at the meet. He qualified on the "bump" at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals with a 7.745/180.50. He crashed the car during qualifying at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals in September. He had run 7.730/179.49 but still hadn't made the show. He came back for another run, and the car got loose and flipped. He was ok. |

Notes: The team got progressively quicker throughout the year, qualifying 13th spot at Pomona with a 7.995 172.74. Late in July, he was at Denver for the NHRA Mile-High Nationals. It was an eight-car field, and his 8.36/164.53 qualified #6. Unfortunately, an even better 8.33/164.53 in the first round, lost to Lee Shepherd's 8.17/170. Eckman qualified #13 at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals with a 7.87/177.86. Joe Lepone fouled against him in the opening round, and he advanced with a 7.88/177.51. In round two, he fouled away a 7.89/178.21 while eventual winner Bob Glidden ran 7.75 for the win. Jerry was the third alternate for the eight-car field at the NHRA Golden Gate Nationals with a 7.80/175.78. Eckman best times at the World Finals at Orange County with a 7.731/178.21. He advanced past the first-round when Gene Fasching fouled, but in the second round, his 7.81/175.43 fell to the eventual winner Warren Johnson's 7.70/177. |

Notes: The team had a good year but could not get past the top four racers in the class. Don qualified #5 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 7.84/175.78. He ran another 7.84 at 171.42 in the opening round to beat Ronnie Manchester's 8.07/168. He faced low qualifier Lee Shepherd in round two, and Lee's Camaro had ignition problems that slowed him to 8.68/119 while Coonce advanced with a 7.89/171.10. In the semifinal, he slowed to a 7.92/175.09 that lost to Frank Iaconio's 7.83/173. He competed at the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada, where he qualified #5 in the eight-car field. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Bob Glidden. Don upset Glidden in their race; in the semifinal, he lost to the eventual winner Shepherd. He also lost to Shepherd at the NHRA Summernationals held at Englishtown in mid-July. Coonce qualified #4 with a 7.87/174.75. He ran the same numbers in round one, while beating Bubba Corzine's 7.94/173. In round two, the speed remained the same, but his ET was 7.88, which was still good enough to defeat Johnny Dowey's 7.89/174. But he fouled against Shepherd in the semifinal. Shortly after that, he was at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. This was an eight-car field, and he qualified #5 with an 8.33/166.23. in the opening round, he fouled away an 8.38 against low qualifier Glidden, who advanced at 8.16. Don's next stop was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. It was another eight-car field, and his 7.79/174.08 qualified #3. In round one, Dowey's 7.96/173 fell to his 7.85/171.10, but he fouled against eventual winner Iaconio in the semifinal. Best times of 7.732 at Fremont and 180.72 at OCIR (7.738). |

Notes: Tom, Dick, and Harry Scribner had an unusual entry in competition. When they showed up at an event, they were sure to have the only Cougar running in Pro Stock. On January 19, the team was at Firebird for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. There were only four Pro Stock cars there, but Scribner ran the best time, a 7.87/174.75. The '86 NHRA season started at Pomona for the Winternationals. Harry ran a best of 7.811/178.21 in qualifying, but failed to make the show. The team also failed to qualify at the NHRA Gatornationals and the NHRA Southern Nationals where a 7.732/178.92 best was good for the eighth alternate. Those ended up being the team’s best times for the season. They were sixth alternate with a 7.78/178.11 best at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. They followed the tour to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals where once again they failed to qualify. This time, Harry was the twelfth alternate with a 7.83/177.40 best. They were learning fast why Bob Glidden was the only competitive Ford in NHRA Pro Stock. The going was tough. At the NHRA Grandnationals, a 7.79/178.14 best left them as the fourth alternate for the show and at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, a 7.74/177.65 failed to qualify as well. The team traveled to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, but once again failed to make the show with an 8.15/169.17 best in the thin air. Shortly after this, the team went to Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. It was their first IHRA sanctioned event and their 500 cubic inch engine was up against some 700 cubic inch "Mountain Motors.” Still, Harry ran 7.83/176.12 to qualify #13. An opening round 7.84/176.47 lost to eventual winner Rickie Smith's 7.42/183. At Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals, Harry's 7.79/176.81 failed to qualify. The next event on the NHRA trail was the NHRA US Nationals at Indy. It took a 7.60 to make the sixteen-car field and their best of 7.73/178.21 was only good for the sixteenth alternate position. The Cougar was a crowd pleaser, but it needed a few more ponies to get into these shows. These were hard fields to qualify at and despite not qualifying, they were still running well. At Maple Grove in September for the NHRA Keystone Nationals, a 7.73/177.97 best failed to qualify (tenth alternate). Harry was twelfth alternate at the NHRA Chief Nationals at the Texas Motorplex with a 7.78/177.40 best. The team didn't give up, running a 7.79/173.98 for the eighth alternate at Phoenix for the NHRA Fallnationals and a 7.85/176.88 that failed to qualify at the NHRA World Finals at Pomona. You have to give them credit; in a Pro Stock world of Camaros and Firebirds at the time, they choose to be different and ran the untried Cougar body style. Not sure how much the rear window configuration did for aerodynamics. All in all, it was a refreshing change, but I'm not sure the boys would agree, as they were probably sick of not making the fields. They still finished 24th in the season long NHRA points chase as points are awarded even for attempting to qualify at national events. Did the team run 180 mph somewhere this year? (They did not at an NHRA national event). |
