Notes: Mark qualified #1 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.19/191.44. He beat Jerry Haas' 7.32/188 in the first round, with a 7.22/190.39. In round two, he lost to Jim Yates. At NHRA's second event, the Arizona Nationals, he qualified #13 with a 7.31/189.83. He ran an even better 7.24/190.71 in the first round, but it wasn't enough as he lost to Warren Johnson's 7.20/192. Mark ran 7.18/191.57 at Houston to qualify #5 for the NHRA Supernationals. A 7.27/189.87 beat Harry Scribner's 7.34/189 in the first round. In round two, his 7.21/190.27 just nipped Bob Glidden's 7.22/191. He got a break in the semifinals when Bruce Allen fouled away a 7.18/191, and Pawuk went into the final with a 7.22/190.47. His final-round opponent was Rickie Smith. Rickie had run three straight 7.23's to reach the final. Pawuk got the holeshot in the final, and his 7.28/189.83 got his first-ever NHRA Pro Stock victory over Smith's quicker 7.24/190. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he ran 7.18/192.34 to qualify #8. He improved to a 7.17/192.14 to beat Glidden's 7.18/192. In round two, his 7.19/191.16 took out Scott Geoffrion's 7.19/191. Unfortunately, in the semifinals, Mark fouled away a 7.19/191.44. The next stop was at Rockingham for NHRA's Winston Invitational. He qualified #10 with a 7.25/190.71, but his first-round 7.26/189.83 lost to Don Beverley's 7.22/191. He qualified for every NHRA race this year, and he almost broke his streak when his 7.30/189.71 just (#15) made the show at Atlanta for the Southern Nationals. In the first round, he stepped up a bit to a 7.29/187.30 to take out #2 qualifier Allen's 7.33/189. In round two, he improved again, turning a 7.23/188.99 to beat Lewis Worden's 7.31/188. However, he lost out in the semifinals when his 7.25/189.83 fell to Beverley's 7.21/191. He was close to the "bump" spot again at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals, but his 7.31/189.75 held on for the #14 spot in the field. A better 7.28/190.23 wasn't enough in the first round, and he lost to WJ's 7.23/192. He qualified much smoother at the NHRA Springnationals, where his 7.30/188.44 got the #8 spot in the field. But once again, he lost in round one, when his 7.28/188.91 fell to Smith's holeshot 7.32/188. The NHRA tour then shifted to Canada for the Grandnationals. Mark qualified #5 with a 7.25/191.00, but for the third race in a row, he lost in the first round. Smith got him again. The ninth race of the season was the NHRA Summernationals held in conjunction with the Budweiser Pro Stock Challenge. At the Pro Stock Challenge, Mark ran an off pace 7.47/188 in the first round, that lost to Geoffrion's 7.33/189. For the Summernationals run the following day, Pawuk qualified #5 with a 7.27/190.19. His unlucky streak continued when another 7.27 at 189.83 lost to Paul Rebeschi's 7.28/190 in round one.

Notes: Bubba Corzine had a good year in '83. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #9 with a 7.90/173.74. Unfortunately, he faced low qualifier, Bob Glidden, in round one, and his 8.01/172.08 lost to Bob's 7.86/174. At the Gatornationals, a 7.804/177.51 qualified #12, and in the opening round, he fouled away a 7.83 against Frank Iaconio who advanced with a 7.69. He stopped off at Green Valley Raceway on April 10 for a four-car show. Corzine set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 7.72/178.92. In the opening round, his 7.87/175.43 beat Chuck Nuyten's 8.16/168, and in the final, his 7.86/176.12 picked up the victory over Eddie Conrad's 8.12/168. The Southern Nationals at Atlanta featured only an eight-car field. Bubba was able to run 7.85/175.78 to qualify #6, but he fouled away a 7.92 in the opening round against the eventual winner Lee Shepherd, who advanced with a 7.85/172. He also lost to Shepherd in the first round at the NHRA Cajun Nationals, where he fouled again. He qualified #7 in the eight-car field with a 7.85/175.09. Shepherd continued to have Corzine's number at the next NHRA event, the Springnationals. There Bubba's 7.92/175.09 qualified #9, and that forced him to run Shepherd, who qualified #1 in the first round. Corzine pushed the tree a little too hard and fouled away a 7.94, while Lee moved on with a 7.86. He then made a stop at St.Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. He qualified #3 in the sixteen car field with a 7.93/176.13, and he lasted until round two where the car broke. He did not attend the Grandnationals, but he was at Englishtown for the Summernationals. There a 7.97/172.74 qualified #12. In the first round, his 7.94/173.41 fell to Don Coonce's 7.87/174. A couple of weeks later, he was at Denver for the Mile High Nationals. It was another eight-car show, and his 8.39/164.23 qualified #7 in the thin air. An opening round 8.38/162.16 lost to Warren Johnson's 8.22/170. The next stop on the NHRA tour was the Northstar Nationals at Brainerd. Once again, Corzine qualified well, running an 8.01/171.42 for the #13 spot. He lost to Coonce in the opening round. Bubba's Gatornationals times were the best NHRA national event times of the year. | Sharp Chaparral outfit at the '82 Finals. In '83 they came back with Tharp, Schultz, and a Swindahl. - Joe Moore

Notes: Darrell was the fifth alternate at the Texas Motorplex for the NHRA Lone Star Nationals with a 7.05/195.56. At Englishtown, for the NHRA Mopar Parts Nationals, his 6.95/197.41 qualified #4. In the opening round of eliminations, Alderman ran a career-best (to this point) 6.94/198.28 to beat Terry Adams' 6.98/197. In the second round, Steve Schmidt fouled, so Darrell's 7.07/172.91 advanced. In the semifinal, he caught a great light that saw his 6.96/196.67 beat Jim Yates' quicker 6.91/198. He faced Bruce Allen in the final, and a 6.98/196.20 gave him his first win since the '95 Gatornationals. It was Alderman's 27th NHRA National event victory. The team recorded best times at NHRA Richmond at 6.937/198.76. | Won two national events in 1997 (Englishtown and Topeka), qualified # 1 at Rockingham. Notes: Gordie started the '85 season by qualifying #5 at Pomona for the Winternationals with a 7.65/179.92. A first-round 7.66/179.56 beat Gene Fasching, but in round two, he fouled away a 7.65 against Bob Glidden's 7.58. At the NHRA Gatornationals, his 7.72/180.28 qualified #8. Tim Nabors fouled against him in the first round, and Gordie shut down to 15.86/91.25 to win. He got out of shape in round two, but his 8.26/145.96 beat Frank Sicinski, who had even more problems at 9.26/118. His easy run ended in the semifinals, where Warren Johnson's 7.55/184 beat his 7.84/179.78. Atlanta was the next stop on the NHRA tour for the Southern Nationals. Rivera qualified #8 with a 7.78/178.35. A first-round 7.84/177.51 advanced when Charlie Garrett fouled, but Rivera fouled away a 7.78 against Dave Hutchens' 7.87 in round two. Gordie ran well at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, where his 7.645/182.11 qualified #5. He beat Nick Nikolis in the first round, with a 7.77/177.79, but an ailing 8.17/135.74 in round two lost to Frank Iaconio's 7.78/178. After that, it was off to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. His 7.70/178.92 qualified #7, and in the opening round, he beat Ken Dondero's 7.89/173 with a 7.84/176.40. But in round two, he fouled away a 7.81 against Johnson, who advanced with a 7.64. Gordie ran 7.644/182.40 at the Grandnationals and 7.616/180 at Englishtown. Those were his best NHRA national event ET and speed of the year. We need to complete Gordie's NHRA numbers from all other events.

Notes: National Dragster cites 83 Camaro at NHRA Maple Grove. We need to confirm. | Don qualified #15 at Pomona for the Winternationals with a 7.75/178.64. A 7.84/176.67 in the first round, lost to Ken Dondero's 7.67/180. At the Gatornationals, a 7.73/178.42 qualified #9, forcing him to run low qualifier Bob Glidden in the first round. Don lost that one when he broke on the line. The next event was the Southern Nationals held in Atlanta. He qualified #7 with a 7.77/179.49. In the first round, his 7.80/177.72 beat Joe Lepone and a second-round 7.82/176.70 beat Bruce Allen. But in the semifinals, he fouled away a 7.79 against Glidden. Don continued to improve. At the Cajun Nationals, he again qualified #7, but this time he ran a 7.70/178.07 to do it. He failed to make the final round, however. The Springnationals was the next event on the NHRA tour, and a 7.73/178.57 qualified #10. He lost to Allen's 7.66/175 in round one, with a 7.80/178.21. He was in Canada for the Grandnationals, where a 7.64/181.37 qualified #11. A first-round 7.68/180.14 beat Frank Iaconio's 7.71/178, and in round two, his 7.69/176.47 advanced when Dempsey Hardy fouled. In the semifinals, Don's 7.74/178.64 lost to eventual winner Allen's 7.58/183. The times kept getting lower for Campanello and at the Summernationals, a 7.63/179 qualified #7.

Notes: Gary qualified #13 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.28/189.59. A first-round 7.32/188.71 fell to Warren Johnson's 7.21/192. He was the first alternate at Arizona for the NHRA Motorcraft Nationals with a best of 7.34/188.83. It was then off to Houston for the NHRA Supernationals, where Brown's 7.26/190.07 held for the "bump" in the field. He lost to low qualifier Bruce Allen in the first round. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he was #15 with a 7.21/191.04. Unfortunately, he fouled and shut down to 9.41/100.76 in the first round, against Larry Morgan. He was the first alternate again at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. His best of 7.33/188.04 just missed making the show. The next NHRA event was the Southern Nationals at Atlanta. A 7.30/187.96 got the "bump" and forced him to run low qualifier Bob Glidden in the first round. Gary fell off to 7.44/183.59 in a loss to Glidden's 7.22/191. The next stop was at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. Gary failed to get in a good run there, and his 7.34/187.69 best was good for the fourth alternate. He was also was the fourth alternate at the NHRA Springnationals with a 7.37/187.38.

Notes: Mike qualified #10 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.06/195.56. His 7.13/194.30 in the opening round lost to Chuck Harris' 7.04/196. He qualified #6 for the NHRA Arizona Nationals with a 7.07/195.43. In the first round, his 7.14/193.21 beat Carl Beal's 7.17/193. But in round two, he fouled away a 7.16/193.09 against Tom Martino, who advanced with a 7.11/194. His next stop was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He debuted a new Ness-built car here after using Steve Schmidt's old '95 car for the season's first two races. The cars were really making power there, and he qualified on the "bump" with a 7.06/196.59. He pulled off a big upset in the first round where his 7.06/196.24 beat low qualifier Warren Johnson's 7.04/196. But in round two, Mark Osborne got the "jump" on him, and his 7.10/195 beat Edwards' 7.09/194. He then went to Houston at the end of March for the NHRA Slick 50 Nationals. A 7.03/196,12 qualified #6 and a 7.04/196.72 beat George Marnell who crashed in round one. He then ran 7.04/196.29 to beat Marnell and 7.05/195.99 in the semi-final to take out Jim Yates, who broke. He faced Ray Franks in the final, and Mike picked up the win with a 7.02/194.46 over Franks' 7.07/195. Rick Howard photo from 1996 US Nats, Indy. Fresh off victories in Houston and Seattle, Edwards qualified 14th at 7.10/195.35. Lost early in round one to Larry Morgan but became 10th member of the Holley Six-Second Club on October 27, 1996, with a 6.995 at Pomona, Calif.

Notes: After running a Ford in '64, Butch Leal switched to Mopars from '65-'69 before briefly running a Pro Stock Mustang for Mickey Thompson. After that, it didn't pan out. He raced a Camaro Pro Stock for the rest of '70 and into '71. While the car did record the first west coast "nine's" from a Chevy, it was still not competitive with the Mopars, so he had a new state-of-the-art Duster built for '71. If it wasn't for Bill Jenkins's dominance that season, Leal's Duster would have been the car to beat at any race. Leal stayed will the Mopar camp until the end of '82, when he signed on with the Rod Shop team to build their new Firebird Pro Stock. The car debuted at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals using Chevy power. He qualified #11 with a 7.94/176.81, but he lost to Roy Hill in the opening round. Leal attempted to qualify at Gainesville for the Gatornationals, but a best of 7.89/171.42 just missed the 7.88 bump. At the NHRA Springnationals, Leal showed up with a new Bob Ingles-built engine. He qualified #8 with a 7.91/174.08, and in the first round, he beat John Brumley with a 7.93/173.74. In the second round, Alan Marsh fouled, and Butch's 7.98/163.93 advanced. In the semifinals, a 7.92/173.74 lost to Bob Glidden's 7.85/177. As the year went on, Leal's times kept improving, and by the NHRA Summernationals in July, he was regularly qualifying in the top half of the field. At Englishtown, a 7.88/173.41 qualified #7. He beat Reid Whisnant and Glidden in the first two rounds before losing to Frank Iaconio's 7.80 in the semifinal with an 8.02. He didn't race at the NHRA Mile High Nationals. At the US Nationals, he qualified #10 with a 7.86/174.41, but his 7.91/173.41 lost to Lee Shepherd's 7.72/177 in the first round. The times really improved by October for the NHRA Golden Gate Nationals. Leal qualified #5 in the eight-car field with a 7.72/177.16. Unfortunately, being number five in an eight-car show meant that he had to run the low qualifier in the first round. In this case, it was Iaconio who ran a 7.70/177 to put Leal's 7.80/177.16 on the trailer. At the season-ending NHRA World Finals, another 7.72/178.18 qualified #6. A first-round 7.77/176.12 beat Fred Taylor's 7.88, but a second-round 7.81/175.78 lost to Shepherd's 7.68/177. Still, he just cracked the top ten in the season-long NHRA points chase.

Notes: Frank started the season by qualifying #4 at the Winternationals with a 7.36/187.81. A first-round 7.40/186.79 beat Don Coonce's 7.42/186. In the second round, he beat Kenny Delco's 7. 43/186 with a 7.36/187.57. In the semifinals, a 7.39/185.83 beat an off pace Morris Johnson Jr. In the final, Iaconio stayed consistent with a 7.37/186.79, but he lost to Bob Glidden's 7.29/188. At the next NHRA race, the Supernationals, Frank qualified #10 and once again Glidden got him. Only this time Bob beat him in the first round. At the Gatornationals, a 7.35/187.53 qualified #4. He beat Larry Morgan in the first round, with a 7.36, and a 7.42/186 beat Butch Leal in round two. He showed his driving skill in the semifinal when he beat Bruce Allen's 7.36 with a quicker-leaving 7.39/186. He was in the final again in two out of the three NHRA events run in '89. This time, he met the Dodge of Darrell Alderman in the final and despite a quicker 7.38/186.72 he lost to Alderman's 7.39/186. The next event on the schedule was the Southern Nationals on April 23. Iaconio's 7.39/185.95 qualified #7 and he was upset in the first round, by Delco. Another first-round loss came at the Mid-South Nationals. He had barely qualified with a 7.40/187.30 giving him the #15 spot. Don Beverley dealt him his loss. The Cajun Nationals was the next stop on the tour and a 7.47/184.95 qualified in the dreaded #9 spot. He met top qualifier Bruce Allen in the first round, and lost. Frank's luck changed somewhat at the Springnationals. He qualified #6 with a 7.39/185.45. He beat Delco in the first round, before losing to Allen's Beretta in round two. The NHRA tour headed to Canada for the Grandnational Molson event on June 25. Frank again qualified in the top half of the field with a 7.40/185.72 holding down #5 spot. He beat Joe Folgore in the first round, with a 7.45/184.42. A 7.48/185.07 got past a fouling Glidden in round two and a semifinal 7.43/184.42 beat Rickie Smith's 7.51/182. Unfortunately, he ran Allen in the Reher-Morrison car in the final, which had been beating him quite a bit lately. Allen did it again with a 7.37/185 beating Frank's 7.43/185.07. The ninth race of the season saw the tour at Englishtown for the Summernationals, a race where Iaconio always runs well. He qualified #11 with a 7.41/186.95. Even though he had won this race on a number of occasions, this time, he was dealt a first-round loss by Beverley. In the thin air of Denver, Frank ran a 7.90/173.77 to qualify #10 at the Mile High Nationals. He lost again in the first round; this time, Larry Morgan got him. At the eleventh race of the season, the California Nationals, a 7.39/187.69 qualified #13. A trend was developing with Leal running a 7.38 in the first round, that dropped Frank's 7.41/187.30. From there it was off to Seattle for the Seafair Nationals. Iaconio's 7.37/186.76 qualified #6. A first-round 7.41/186.02 lost to Gordie Rivera's 7.44/185. Thing went much better at the Northstar Nationals where Frank used a 7.47/184.31 to qualify #7. He beat Jerry Haas in the first round, and a 7.50/184.50 beat Leal's slightly quicker 7.49/184 in the second round. In the semifinals, Iaconio fouled to Glidden, but it was still a shot in the arm by making the semi's after a streak of first-round losses. Unfortunately, it didn't last, as at the US Nationals, he lost to Glidden's 7.40/186 in the first round, with a 7.43/185.64. Frank qualified #10 for the race with a 7.39/185.91. The NHRA tour's next stop was at Maple Grove for the Keystone Nationals. A 7.36/186.48 qualified #7 there and a first-round 7.38/186.10 beat Ismael Pastrana's 7.42/185. He ran a consistent 7.39/186.21 in round two, but lost to Alderman's 7.38/186. After running so well and qualifying at all the races it was somewhat surprising that he failed to qualify at the Chief Nationals and the Fallnationals. He got it back together for the season-ending World Finals where he ran a 7.40/186.76 to qualify #15. He beat Delco in the first round, before losing to WJ's 7.38/187 with a 7.41/186.68. He ended the season sixth in the NHRA Pro Stock points chase.

Notes: Rickie started the NHRA season by qualifying #15 at the Winternationals with a 7.40/187.93. He was sharp on the tree, running a first-round 7.43/186.10 to cover Joe Lepone's quicker 7.35/187. In the second round, Warren Johnson's 7.34/188 beat his 7.42/186.45. At the next event, the Arizona Nationals, a 7.40/186.95 was good for first alternate. Rickie just made the field at the following race, the Supernationals, where a 7.334/187.03 qualified #16. Once again, his driving got him past the first-round when he ran a 7.31/187.46 to beat Mark Pawuk's 7.30/188. In the second round, a 7.35/187.11 beat Larry Morgan's 7.38/189. Unfortunately, a 7.29/188 by Bruce Allen put an end to Rickie's (7.34/187.57) run. At Gainesville for the Gatornationals on March 18, he once again qualified way down the list with a 7.38/186.95 being #13. He got past a fouling Pawuk in the first round, with a 7.44/185.41 and a 7.40/186 beat Morgan's 7.47/185 in the second round. In the semifinal, his 7.38/187.07 beat Bob Glidden's 7.39/189. He met another NHRA first time Pro Stock finalist, Kenny Delco. A final round 7.36/187.22 finished runner-up to Delco's 7.28/189. He then went to Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. A 7.34/187.42 qualified #11. In the opening round, he improved slightly to a 7.33/187.42 to beat James Antonette and a second round 7.34/187.53 stopped Jim Yates' 7.49/186. But in the semifinals, his 7.38/187.89 lost to Larry Morgan's 7.29/188. Rickie moved up in qualifying at the Southern Nationals where a 7.30/187.81 was good for #9. Unfortunately, he lost to Morgan in the opening round. Best NHRA times were 7.266/189.19 at Ennis Fall.

Notes: Winner of Gatornationals in 1986. Listed times from Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. | Campanello did not run at Pomona for the season-opening NHRA Winternationals. Still, he was at Gainesville, where he raised some eyebrows by winning the NHRA Gatornationals. He ran a career-best 7.508 at 182.40 to qualify #2 behind Bob Glidden's 7.49/186. Interestingly, while winning this race, he used up two Oldsmobile engines, and he ran a Chevy engine in the final. In the opening round of eliminations, his 7.58/183.29 beat Joe Lepone. A second-round 7.63/180.07 advanced when Jerry Eckman fouled and, in the semifinal, his 7.69/177.23 beat Gordie Rivera's 7.74/165. He faced Butch Leal in the final, and things didn't look too good for Campanello as Leal's worst time in eliminations had been 7.56. But Leal fouled away a final round 7.54/183, and Don picked up the victory with an 8.13/132.70. But he went from hero to zero at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where he was the sixth alternate with a 7.70/180.00 best. He also failed to qualify at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, where he was the first alternate at 7.71/178.39. Things went a little better at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where he qualified on the "bump" with a 7.71/175.02. Unfortunately, his first-round 7.84/176.47 lost to Eckman's 7.70/178. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals, but once again, he was the first alternate with a 7.69/172.61 best. Campanello got back into the 7.5s at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. But he needed to as his 7.59/182.11 qualified on the "bump.” He lost early in eliminations. Don hit the 7.5s at a few other events, but mostly stayed in the 7.60s and 7.70s for the rest of the tour. His Gainesville 7.508 was his quickest NHRA national event time of the year, although he did run a booming 185.91 at Indy.
