Notes: The 7.62 at 176.47 was a questionable run but has never been disproved. Lee Shepherd came from behind to clinch his third straight Winston Pro Stock championship after points leader and No. 1 qualifier Frank Iaconio was upset by Reid Whisnant in round one. Whisnant clocked a stunning 7.620, the quickest run ever by a Pro Stocker in NHRA competition. - NHRA | Whisnant also ran a 7.71 early in the season but was mired in the 7.80s for most of 1983. | Reid Whisnant had the lone Mopar to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. His 7.88 qualified #8, and in the opening round, he beat Harry Scribner. In round two, his 7.95/177.16 beat Ronnie Manchester's 8.01/172, but a semifinal 8.05 lost to eventual winner Frank Iaconio's 7.83. It was a good showing for the Mopar, and he continued to run well at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where Reid qualified #2 with a 7.71/178.57 behind Lee Shepherd's 7.67/181. He beat Mark Yuill in round one before losing to Rickie Smith in round two, where both drivers ran 7.75. Whisnant then went to Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #7, but an 8.02 in the first round, lost to Mickey Stephens' 7.94. He was the only non-GM car to qualify for the eight-car field at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. He qualified #5, which set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Iaconio. The Camaro got out of shape, and Reid advanced to the semifinals, where he lost to Joe Lepone. The Mopar driver continued to impress when he went to Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Nationals. The Rock had 26 cars attempting to qualify, and his 7.80 qualified #8. Unfortunately, he lost early.

Notes: Reid entered the 1984 NHRA season with a lot to prove after his amazing 7.620 at the World Finals in 1983. He started inauspiciously with a 7.918/175.09 first alternate shot at the Winternationals. However, he did get into the show and lost to Warren Johnson in the first round, 7.884/178.21 to 7.886/176.12. Reid then brought out a brand new Don Hardy Daytona at Gainesville. He was first alternate DNQ at 7.844/176.81 but got into the show and – like the World Finals a few months earlier – ran an out-of-this-world 7.615/174.41 to defeat Ken Dondero’s 7.814/175.78 in round one. Amazingly, a two-tenths Dondero holeshot (.450 to .646) almost stole the race. The margin of victory was .003 seconds! This run only added to the mystery and suspicion about Whisnant’s combination, especially after Don Coonce defeated him in round two, 7.78/179 to a ‘normal’ 7.893/175.09 from Reid. Whisnant followed this with DNQ efforts in Atlanta (7.943/174.75) and Columbus (7.940/176.12). He qualified #15 at Sanair at 7.839/178.57 and lost in round one, to Frank Iaconio, 7.76/180 to 7.956/176.47. Reid was a third alternate DNQ at Englishtown at 7.854/175.78 and also DNQ’d at Indy at 7.881/176.47. He qualified #14 at the World Finals at 7.814/176.47. He got a legit win over Andy Mannarino in round one, 7.890/175.78 to 8.015/176.12, but lost to Butch Leal in round two, 7.765/178.92 to 7.867- 176.47. Reid was a hard-running campaigner who often qualified and ran well. But his ability to drop two tenths from his normal times in 1983/1984 will have pro stock fans forever questioning those low 7.6 second runs.

Notes: Low qualifier at Indy 82 at 7.762/179.28. | Johnson failed to qualify at the Gatornationals. That performance would soon change as the little Starfire was one of the most feared cars by the end of the '82 season. At the Southern Nationals in Atlanta, he made the show and lasted until the semifinals before fouling against Lee Shepherd. He won the second Division 2 race, winning with a holeshot 7.95/166.66 over Wyman Barnett's Arrow at 7.91/168. He qualified for the Cajun Nationals with a 7.93 which was good for the #4 spot in the field. Once again he lasted until the semifinal before losing to Frank Iaconio. At Columbus for the Springnationals, a 7.87/174.75 qualified #4. He beat Alban Gauthier in the first round, and an 8.02/171.10 beat Dave Hutchens in round two. But in the semifinals, he fouled away a 7.96 that lost to Bob Glidden's 8.01. He raced at the Super Stock Nationals at Maple Grove in June, but lost to Andy Mannarino in the first round. Warren made his first NHRA final of the year at the Grandnationals on July 4 in Canada. He beat Glidden's 7.85 in the semifinal with a 7.84, but a final run of 7.88/175 was only good for the runner-up position to Shepherd's 7.74/178. He broke through for a win at the next event. The Summernationals at Englishtown. He qualified #4 with a 7.91/175.09. A first-round 7.87 beat Sam Gianino. In round two he beat Don Campanello, and a 7.91 in the semifinal advanced when Joe Lepone fouled. In the final, WJ took a satisfying victory over Shepherd with a 7.90/174.41 beating Lee's close 7.91/173. This was Warren's first NHRA national event win. At the PHR Championships at US 131 Martin, Mich., a 7.85/173.07 qualified #5 in the eight-car show, setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Shepherd. In that first-round race, Lee's 7.83/174 beat Johnson's 7.87/173.41. During this time, WJ was tearing up the troops on the IHRA Pro Stock tour as well. At the next NHRA event, the Northstar Nationals in Aug, Warren qualified #3 in the eight-car show with a 7.89/174.75. A first-round 7.93/173.07 advanced over a fouling John Lingenfelter. But once again he lost in the semifinals. At the US Nationals, his 7.762 (Low ET) at a new NHRA speed record of 179.28 qualified #1. Unfortunately, he lost to Butch Leal in the first round. He grabbed another win on October 3 at Fremont for the Golden Gate Nationals. He qualified #2 with a 7.660 and also ran 181.08, becoming the first NHRA Pro Stock to run 180. Once again he met and beat Shepherd in the final; this time his 7.69/179.28 beat Lee's 7.74/179. He wrapped up the NHRA season by setting Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 7.73, setting Top Speed at 178.92, and winning the World Finals at OCIR with a final round 7.78/176 over the Texas Camaro's (you know who) 7.86/177. Even though the NHRA season had ended he still grabbed off more wins such as the Turkey Trot National Open at Orlando Florida in November. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 7.89/178.57. He was the only pro stocker in the sevens at the event. A first-round 8.03/176.47 beat Billy Ewing and a semifinal 7.92/177.86 beat Reid Whisnant. In the final, he beat a fouling Harry Del Prete. He also won the Snowbird National Open at DeSoto. A 7.84/175.43 (Top Speed) qualified #1. A first-round 7.83 beat Ewing and another 7.83 beat Whisnant's 8.12. In the final, he set Low ET with a 7.79/175.78 over a fouling Bubba Corzine at 7.96/172.

Notes: The Reher-Morrison team started the season with Shepherd qualifying #2 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.68/179.64. Lee beat Roy Hill in the first round, while in round two, his 7.78 beat Don Coonce's 7.89. Another 7.78 advanced in the semifinals when Bob Glidden fouled against him. That set up a final-round meeting with Frank Iaconio. These two met in the Winternationals final in '82, with Iaconio winning. This time it was Shepherd's turn as his 7.71/178.57 got the victory over Frank's 7.76/174. The competition was hot at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Forty-six cars attempted to qualify for the sixteen-car field. Lee led them all with a new NHRA national record of 7.62 at 181.08. He slowed down a tenth in the first round, with a 7.72/179.28, but Lee didn't need it as Joe Lepone fouled. But in round two, Iaconio ran 7.71/176 to beat Lee's 7.77/179.99. The next race was the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta. Lee only qualified #5 with a 7.78/177.86, but he beat Sam Carroll, Warren Johnson, and Glidden to reach the final. There he used a holeshot 7.78/177.86 to get the victory over a strong running Don Campanello, who runner-upped with a 7.74/179. Baton Rouge was NHRA's next stop for the Cajun Nationals. There Lee would win his third title in four starts. He qualified #3 with a 7.68/182.18. He made his way into the final by getting by a fouling Glidden in the semifinals with a 7.81/176. In the final, Butch Leal also pulled a red light, and Shepherd ran 7.75/181.08 for the win. Still, another win came at the next race, the NHRA Springnationals, in June. A 7.76 qualified #3, and a 7.75/176 got him into the final when Gordie Rivera "bulbed" against him in the semifinal. This time Brad Yuill was Lee's final round victim, and a 7.75/178.57 did him in. This was Shepherd's last victory in NHRA competition. Lee failed to reach the final at the NHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #2 with a 7.68/180.72, but in the semifinals, Glidden gated him, and his 7.78 beat Shepherd's quicker 7.75. Glidden got him again at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Lee only qualified #6 with a 7.72. He beat Charlie Garrett in round one and WJ in round two. In the semifinals, his 7.80 beat Lepone's 7.87. This put him into the final with Bob. Glidden had the edge as he had run 7.71 in his semifinal heat. Sure enough, Glidden ran another 7.71/178 to beat the Camaro's 7.77/177.51. Lee reached the final in the next event as well, the NHRA Mile High Nationals. He qualified #2 and advanced into the final against Warren Johnson. WJ had set a track record in qualifying #1, and once again, Lee had to settle for the runner-up spot. His 8.14/166.97 was no match for the Oldsmobile driver's 8.07/171. These two would continue to run strong at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. Glidden stole the thunder in qualifying by qualifying #1, but Shepherd was #2 with a 7.75/178.92 while WJ was #3. The semifinals saw Lee beat Iaconio while WJ took out Glidden. It was a close final, with WJ getting the victory with a 7.75/180 over Lee's 7.76/177.16. Things didn't go too well at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. A 7.71/178.21 qualified #4, and they picked up to a 7.66/178.21 in the first round to beat Sam Gianino, but in round two, a slipping clutch slowed the car to an 8.85 loss to Rivera. WJ went on to win his third NHRA event in a row and close the points gap. Going into the NHRA World Finals, the NHRA Pro Stock Championship was up for grabs between these two. Lee qualified #3 at 7.69/178.21, while WJ wasn't far behind in the #5 spot. But the big points race ended quickly when WJ was upset by Rickie Smith in the first round. Lee ran 7.71/178.57 to beat Lepone, and the NHRA title was his for the fourth year in a row. A round two 7.72/175.43 beat Rivera, but in the semifinals, he had problems and shut down to an 8.04/130.81 that lost to eventual winner Glidden. It was interesting to note that not in one NHRA event in '84 did Lee set Low ET or Top Speed. Quite a difference from previous years. This also said a lot about Shepherd as a driver. Even at Gainesville with the 7.62 NHRA record, Reid Whisnant had gotten Low ET with a controversial 7.61. The team was dominating the IHRA side of things as well, with all kinds of records there.

Notes: Warren started the season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where his 7.21/192.76 (Top Speed) qualified #4. He repeated that number in the first round at 192.55 to defeat Gary Brown's 7.32/188. In round two, his 7.25/191.89 beat Scott Geoffrion's 7.29/191. But he slowed to 7.32/189.95 in the semi-final, and that wasn't good enough as he lost to eventual winner Jerry Eckman's 7.25/190. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, he qualified #4 again with a 7.25/191.24. In the opening round, he set Top Speed with a 7.20/192.10 that took out Mark Pawuk's 7.24/190 effort. He slowed to 7.29/190.39 in the second round, but it was enough to get around Bruce Allen. In the semi-final, he got out of shape and lost to Eckman again, who ran 7.24/190 to win the race and take a huge points lead. The third NHRA event of the season was the Supernationals held at Houston in the first week of March. WJ slipped to #6 in the qualifying order with a 7.18/193.38 (Top Speed). Larry Morgan pulled off a big upset in the first round where his quick-leaving 7.25/190 beat WJ's 7.19/191.69. His first win of the season came at the next event, the NHRA Gatornationals. A 7.15/194.46 (Top Speed) qualified #3, and a 7.14/193.84 in the first round beat Rickie Smith's 7.22/191. Another 7.14 at 194.04 in the second round beat Vince Khoury's 7.29/189. He got "revenge" over Morgan in the semi-final, where his third 7.14 at 193.75 beat Larry's 7.21/191. He finished it with yet another 7.14/193 in the final to beat Eckman's 7.16/192. WJ won his first NHRA Championship this year. He also ran 7.109 at Ennis Fall.

Notes: Started the season with a runner-up finish at the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #2 with a 7.07 at a track record speed of 195.77. A first-round 7.16/194.51 beat David Rampy, while in round two, his 7.19/192.88 beat Jim Yates' close 7.20/191. Kurt Johnson fouled against him in the semifinals, and he ran 7.12/193.92 to advance into the finals. There he met up with Kurt's dad, Warren Johnson. The two had a good race, but WJ's 7.09/195 got the victory over Darrell's 7.12/193. At the NHRA Quality Care Nationals at Arizona, Alderman set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 7.07 at 194.59. Once again, he worked his way into the final by beating Jerry Haas in round one, with a 7.11/193.79, then Larry Morgan lost to Darrell's 7.15/193.54 in round two, and in the semifinals, a 7.11/193.79 beat Kurt Johnson. He met his teammate Scott Geoffrion in the final, and although both ran 7.11 (Alderman at 194.21), Scott got his second NHRA victory. Alderman qualified #2 at the NHRA Slick 50 Nationals with a 7.06/194.84 behind his teammate, Geoffrion's 7.03/196. An opening round 7.13 beat Tim Jost, and in round two, Larry Morgan got out of shape against him. Alderman advanced with a 7.07/195. But in the semifinal, he lost to eventual winner WJ. The Gatornationals was the next event on the NHRA calendar, and Darrell qualified #3 there with a 7.12/195.39. He improved to 7.08/195.31 in the opening round to beat Jost's 7.28/189. In round two, his 7.10/195.77 stopped Morgan at 7.19/193, and a 7.09/196.12 beat Goffrion's 7.13/194 in the semifinal. He faced WJ in the final, and Darrell had lane choice. Unfortunately, Darrell fouled away a 7.11/195.27 in their race, and WJ grabbed the victory with a 7.13/195. Even though no points were involved, Alderman scored a big win at Rockingham for the NHRA Invitational race. He qualified #6 with a 7.11/195.90 and another 7.11 at 194.25 beat Rickie Smith's 7.20/191 in the first round. He got quicker in round two, where his 7.08/194.80 took care of Bob Glidden's 7.19/192. David Rampy's 7.31/183 fell to Alderman's 7.12/193.71 in the semifinal. He ran his teammate in the final, and Darrell got a good light, and his 7.16/193.79 held on to win over Geoffrion's quicker 7.13/193. Things did not go nearly as well at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. He had "only" qualified #12 with a 7.16/194.34, and in the opening round of competition, his 7.20/192.96 lost to Jim Yates' 7.15/190. He came back from that by winning the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. His 7.11/194.46 qualified #1, and he repeated that time in the first round(at 195.14 for Top Speed)to advance over a broken Mike Thomas. He then set Low ET in round two with a 7.10/194.63 that took out Yates' 7.22/191. Alderman had his closest race in the semifinal, where he used a 7.14/194.42 to beat Kurt Johnson's 7.16/193. Once again, he battled his teammate for the win. This time Alderman made it look easy as his 7.14/190.71 easily beat Scott's 7.21/191. Rick Howard photo from 1994 NHRA Oldsmobile Springnats, Columbus. Qualified second at 7.21/193.05. In round one, he defeated Mike Thomas with an improved 7.16/193.92 and got by Mark Osborne to reach the semis. He lost to Jim Yates. Returned after a suspension. The second member of the Holley Six-Second Club on August 5/1994, with a 6.994 at Seattle.

Notes: Also Ran IHRA, which ran at 500 inches in 1988. Won 1988 IHRA Spring Nationals with a 7.500 at 184.35 and the IHRA Fall Nationals with a 7.426 at 186.18. Did Warren run 190.67 at the Winston All-Stars race in April? We need to confirm whether this was a different car than the Cutlass Ciera WJ started the year with.

Notes: This was Darrell Alderman's "dream season."He repeated as the NHRA Pro Stock points champion and was the points leader from February until the end of the season. He set a record of 59 round wins to win a record 11 times that season.Alderman qualified #1 at the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.22 (Low ET) and went on to win with a final 7.28/188.08 over a breaking Warren Johnson. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, he again qualified #1 with a 7.21 (Low ET), then ran 7.36/187.38 over Mark Pawuk, a 7.33/188.32 over Rickie Smith, and a semifinal 7.31/189.27 over Tony Christian. Once again, he met WJ for the title, and once again, he won; a 7.31/188.71 beat WJ's 7.34/188. At the third stop on the NHRA tour, the Supernationals, he qualified #2 with a 7.25. He got Low ET in the first round, with a 7.19, and ran a second round 7.20/189.87. In the semifinal, a 7.21/190.03 beat Bruce Allen. He took his third win in the row when his 7.21/190.63 defeated Scott Geoffrion. At the Gatornationals, he qualified #1 with a 7.18 (Low ET) and again made it to the final by running 7.32 in rounds one, and two and a 7.28/188.88 beat Bob Glidden's 7.29/189 in the semifinal. He was matched against WJ in the final again, but this time, WJ's 7.27/189 beat his 7.31/188.48. At Rockingham for the Winston Invitational in April, he qualified #1 with a 7.22/191.61 but failed to reach the final. He lost before the finals at the next NHRA event as well, the Southern Nationals. Darrell did leave with a new track record 7.22 he set in qualifying #1. At the NHRA Mid-South Nationals, a 7.30 qualified #1, and he ran Low ET with a 7.29 during eliminations. In the final, it was Darrell and WJ again; once again, WJ prevailed with a 7.34/188 beating the Dodge's 7.43/185.26. Darrell got back into the winner's circle on June 9 at the NHRA Springnationals. A track record 7.29 at 189.19 qualified #1, and he and WJ worked their way to the final, where Darrell's 7.33/188.36 nipped WJ at 7.33/188. Later in June, he was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #13 with a 7.29 but still managed to work his way to the final, where he met Glidden. Alderman set Low ET with a 7.20/190.07, and he needed every bit of it as Glidden was right there with a 7.21/191. Darrell then won the Pro Stock Challenge race at Englishtown. He beat Pawuk in the first round, with a 7.27/189.23 and a 7.29/188.56 advanced in the semifinals when Jerry Eckman fouled. In the final, a 7.28/189.91 beat Allen's 7.30/189. He really cleaned up at Englishtown, as he won the NHRA Summernationals as well. He qualified #2 with a 7.21/191.16 and made his way into the final against Rickie Smith, where a 7.29/188.08 beat Smith's 7.36/187 for the money. The tenth NHRA event of the season was the Mile High Nationals at Denver. Darrell qualified #2 with a 7.65/178.50, just behind WJ's 7.64. In the first round, he beat Frank Iaconio's 7.78/175 with a 7.68/178.00. Round two saw his 7.73/176.92 beat Jim Yates' 7.80/177. In the semifinals, he lost to Scott Geoffrion's 7.70. At the end of July, he picked up another win at Sonoma for the NHRA California Nationals. It was his seventh win of the season. He qualified #2 with a 7.25/191.85, and in the first round, his 7.29/191.89 beat Gordie Rivera's 7.33/189. In the second round, a 7.28/191.24 beat Yates' tire shaking 7.66/182, and a 7.28/190.96 beat Smith's 7.30/190 in the semifinals. He got the victory in the final by pulling a holeshot and hanging on as his 7.30/190.07 beat Larry Morgan's quicker 7.25/191. Darrell almost won the next NHRA event as well, the Northwest Nationals. He again qualified #2 with a 7.27/189.59 behind WJ's 7.24/191. He improved to a 7.20 (Low ET) at 190.59 to beat Eckman's 7.35/192 in the first round. In round two, a 7.29/188.99 beat Yates' 7.35/186, and in the semis, his 7.29/188.48 beat Morgan's 7.32/187.53. In the final, he ran WJ, and his 7.29 finished second best to the Oldsmobile driver's 7.23. WJ out-qualified him again at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals, but Darrell's 7.36/186.87 held for the second spot in the field. He improved to 7.29/187.34 in his first-round win over Joe Lepone Jr's 7.41/185. A second-round 7.31/187.38 trailered Eckman's 7.39/187, and a semifinal 7.29/187.89 beat Morgan's 7.35/186 and moved him into the final against Allen. Bruce had problems and shut down the Reher-Morrison Beretta giving Alderman his ninth NHRA victory of the season with a 7.32/187.18.After such a great year, it went downhill after he plead guilty to federal cocaine charges, and NHRA suspended him from competing for the next two seasons.

Notes: Bruce's first time out with the Reher-Morrison team in NHRA competition was at the NHRA Cajun Nationals in May. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 7.54 at 182.03. Unfortunately, he got out of shape in the first round, and shut off to 8.50 in a loss to Frank Iaconio. He was also racing the team's other Camaro on the IHRA circuit and was gaining experience. By the time he got to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, he had already won a race in IHRA competition. So at the Springnationals, he qualified #2 with a 7.63/178.07 behind Bob Glidden's 7.57/181. He beat Don Campanello in the first round, with a 7.66/175.84, while in round two, a 7.70/180.65 advanced when Gordie Rivera fouled. In the semifinals, Bruce's 7.68/176 stopped Iaconio's 7.74/178 and moved him into his first NHRA National Event final. His opponent was Warren Johnson. Allen had problems and slowed to 9.34 while Johnson got the victory with a 7.68. Allen did not have to wait long before getting his first NHRA victory as it came at the next NHRA event, the Grandnationals in Canada. He had set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 7.512 at 184.19. Won 1985 NHRA Mr. Gasket Pro Stock Challenge at Indy. Bruce qualified second at the 1985 NHRA Springnats in Columbus at 7.63/178.07. He then defeated Don Campanello, Joe Lepone, and Frank Iaconio to reach the finals. He lost to Warren Johnson. - Rick Howard | Won Maple Grove 9/85 on a holeshot over WJ in the final round.

Notes: WJ entered the season strong as he had won the season-ending NHRA World Finals in '83 and was looking for more in '84. At the season-opening NHRA Winternationals at Pomona, he qualified #3 with a 7.71. Johnson lasted until the semifinals before he fouled against Frank Iaconio. Still, he set Top Speed of the meet for the Pro Stock class at 180.36. He showed his stuff at Gainesville in March for the NHRA Gatornationals, there a 7.662/181.81 qualified #4, and he went on to win. A 7.682/182.55 (Top Speed and a new NHRA record) beat a fouling Johnny Downey. His 7.677/181.45 took out Don Campanello, who also fouled in round two. In the semifinals, WJ slowed to 7.747/172.74, but it was still enough to beat Butch Leal's 7.75/175. This put him into the final against Iaconio. Warren made his best run of the weekend, a 7.643/180.72, to get the victory over Frank's 7.73/180. Atlanta was the next stop on the NHRA tour for the Southern Nationals. WJ set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 7.70/181.81. In round one, he beat Mark Yuill with a 7.75/179.64, but he lost to Lee Shepherd in round two. It was not without controversy as Shepherd's Camaro lost its hood on the run. Warren insisted on having the car weighed to assure that it still weighed in at the legal 2,350 lbs. Even without the hood, the Texas Camaro was legal. He was the top qualifier again at the NHRA Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge with a 7.65 (Low ET) at 181.45. Unfortunately, he lost to Roy Hill in the first round. He had Low ET and Top Speed at the NHRA Springnationals while qualifying #1 with a 7.71/181.08. But once again, he lost early; this time, Gordie Rivera gated him in the second round, and his 7.83 beat Johnson's quicker 7.74. These early losses would come back to haunt Warren and the end of the year for the points championship. He pulled it all together at the NHRA Grandnationals, where a 7.68/182.55 (Low ET and Top Speed) qualified #1. He beat Joe Lepone, Ken Dondero, and Don Coonce to meet with Bob Glidden in the final. Bob's T-Bird was getting stronger as the year progressed, and in the final, his 7.69/180 narrowly lost to WJ's 7.68/182.18. At the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown, Warren was finally out-qualified for the first time in four races. His 7.68/180.72 (Top Speed) was second only to Glidden's 7.67. He beat Rich Marino in round one, before losing to Shepherd in the second round. WJ was back on top at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, where he set an 8.02 track record at 172.74 in qualifying #1. He beat Gene Fasching, Leal, and in the semifinals, he beat Glidden's 8.13/169 with an 8.06/171.10. In the finals, he met Shepherd. This was Johnson's day as he won with an 8.07/171.75 over Lee's 8.14/166. In August, Warren took his eighth NHRA National victory at the Northstar Nationals at Brainerd. He had "only" qualified #3 with a 7.76/181.08 (Top Speed), but he beat Jerry Eckman, Coonce, and Glidden to meet Shepherd again in the final. It was a good race, but Lee's 7.76/177 finished runner-up to Johnson's 7.75/180.36. He was sure closing the points gap between himself and Shepherd with his late-season surge, and it continued at the NHRA US Nationals. He qualified #2 with a 7.66/182.18, and he improved to 7.63 in the first round, over Coonce. In round two, a 7.64/182.18 beat Ronnie Manchester, and in the semis, another 7.63 beat Rivera. In the final, he faced Glidden. Bob had been running about a tenth slower in eliminations, but in the final, he picked up to a 7.65/180 that almost beat WJ's 7.63/181.45. Surprisingly, for only the third NHRA National event of '84, Warren failed to get Top Speed of the meet. It looked like he had a good chance of winning the NHRA Pro Stock Championship going into the World Finals with a 42 point advantage over Shepherd. A 7.75/181.08 qualified #5, but things took an unexpected turn in the first round. Matched against Rickie Smith, the Oldsmobile could only muster a 7.97/175.09 that lost to Smith's 7.89/174. The season and any hopes for the '84 world championship came to a close. Still, it was an excellent season for WJ, his best since entering Pro Stock with five wins and a second-place finish in the points standings. Notes: Number 3 qualifier at Indy 82 at 7.784 and then runner up to Frank Iaconio at Indy, 7.803 to 7.809. #3 qualifier at first 500-inch pro stock race at the Winters, 7.899/174.08. This car was being built by Don Hardy with the intent to run a 351 Cleveland motor. When NHRA switched to the 500 ci rules format, Ford wanted Bob to run the EXP anyway. Glidden had to shove a Boss 429 into the little 92" wheelbase car and hope for the best. He stated after he retired that it was the worst car he ever drove and that it handled like a fuel altered. Even with his limited experience with the 429 (he had tried a small cubic inch Boss motor in testing in '81) he managed to qualify #3 at the season-opening NHRA Winternationals with a 7.89/174.08. He stayed in the sevens during eliminations, running a 7.94/172.74 over Don Campanello in the first round, and a 7.95/173.41 over Jim Meyer in round two, but going up against Lee Shepherd in the semifinals, Bob fouled. The Gatornationals showed how far behind the Glidden's were with the little car. His mph readings were great, third highest in qualifying at 174.41. But the car wouldn't ET. His 7.97 qualified #9 in the field setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Shepherd. In that race, Bob's 8.09/171.75 finished second to Lee's 7.86/175. Things went slightly better in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Glidden's 8.03/174 got past a fouling Frank Iaconio in the first round, and in the semifinal, a 7.89/173 beat Joe Lepone's 8.00/170 in Bill Jenkins' Camaro. The EXP was in its first final round appearance, but an 8.02/174.41 performance gave Bob a runner-up finish to Shepherd's 7.81/174. A 7.90 qualified #3 at the NHRA Cajun Nationals. He beat Andy Mannarino in the first round, but facing Shepherd in the semifinal Bob fouled out. Somehow the car got down the track straight in four runs to win the NHRA Springnationals. This was Bob's only NHRA win of '82. He qualified #2 with a 7.82/175.43. He had a little luck in the semifinals when Warren Johnson fouled away a 7.96 to Glidden's 8.01. But in the final, he met Shepherd again. This time Bob outran the Texas Camaro with a 7.92/170.77 to Lee's 7.93/172. He got another runner-up finish to Shepherd at the NHRA Mile High Nationals in Denver. An 8.31 qualified #2 and in the first round, an 8.35/162.45 beat Bubba Corzine. In the semifinals, he beat Don Coonce, but his final round 8.30/156.79 lost to Lee's 8.27/164. Glidden made it as far as the semifinals at the NHRA Grandnationals. There he lost a 7.84 to 7.85 decision to WJ. At the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown, a 7.83/177.86 (Top Speed) qualified #2. He ran a 7.94 in the first round, over Mannarino, but an off pace 8.10/154 lost in round two to Lepone. In August, he was at US 131 for the PHR Championships. He ran a 7.83/172.74 to qualify #3. In the first round, a 7.85/173.41 beat Lepone's 7.99/169. But in the semifinals, once again his nemesis Shepherd downed him with a 7.85/174 over Bob's 7.94/173.07. He got his first pole of the year at the next NHRA event, the Northstar Nationals. Bob ran 7.87 (Low ET) at 174.75 to get the spot. Unfortunately, in the first round, both he and Iaconio ran 7.92 with Frank getting the win at 168 mph over Glidden's hard-charging 174.08. At Indy for the US Nationals, the EXP dipped into the 7.7's for the first time, qualifying #3 with a 7.78. Bob made it into yet another final (his fourth of the year), but this time it wasn't against Shepherd. Iaconio had taken Lee out in the semifinal, so it was Frank facing off against Bob this time. Both ran 7.80's in the final, with the EXP hitting 175.78 to the Camaro's 173. But Iaconio got the win and Bob had to settle for another runner-up spot. Bob qualified third in the eight-car field at Fremont with a best-ever 7.680 at 178.92 for the NHRA Golden Gate Nationals on October 3. He beat Lepone's 7.85/172 in the first round, with a 7.70/178.21. In the semifinals, he lost to Shepherd.

Notes: Rick Howard (qualifying) photo from 1996 US Nats, OH. Warren Johnson came to Indiana with 4 straight Indy wins in a row and five wins on the year. Qualified second at 7.05, (Top Speed of Meet) 195.90. In round one, a broken wheelie bar nearly sent WJ into the wall, giving the win to Jerry Eckman. His 16-round win streak came to an end.~

Notes: Warren qualified #4 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.65/180.50. He beat Joe Lepone in the first round, with a 7.70/180.94 while a second round 7.69/179.49 beat Rickie Smith's T-Bird. In the semifinals, Butch Leal fouled away a 7.72/180 while Johnson moved into the final with a 7.73/179.28. There he met up with Bob Glidden. Bob was on a roll here, resetting the NHRA ET record no less than three times during the event as well as setting a new speed record so the final was no surprise when Glidden got the victory with a 7.58/184 over WJ's 7.77/179.21. At the NHRA Gatornationals, WJ qualified #2 with a 7.63/183.00 just behind Glidden's 7.61/183. These two would once again work their way to the final. WJ ran 7.55 in all three of his rounds over Ken Dondero, a fouling Nick Nikolis over Gordie Rivera in the semifinal. His best speed was 184.35 in the semis. This time going into the final it was WJ who had the edge. Glidden had run 7.55 and 7.57 in the last two rounds so it would still be close. WJ got the victory with his slowest run of eliminations, a 7.60/183.82 that was still enough to cover Bob's 7.68/170. The battle between these two continued at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. There WJ set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 7.65 at 181.08. A first-round 7.73/181.07 beat Gene Fasching, but in round two he came up against Glidden who qualified poorly (#13). Bob beat him with a 7.72/179 to WJ's 7.79/179.14. Glidden went to the final only to lose to Butch Leal. Next stop was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was to be another WJ vs Glidden final. Warren qualified #2 with a 7.54/184.19, not behind Glidden, but behind Bruce Allen in the Reher-Morrison Camaro also at 7.54. Bob was third with a 7.58. WJ ran a first-round 7.63/181.81 to beat Don Coonce and in round two his 7.68/178.64 advanced when Jerry Eckman fouled. In the semifinals, his 7.62/181.52 sent Dondero packing. Bob had run 7.68/182 in his semifinal win so it would still be close. WJ picked up his second NHRA victory of the year with a 7.61/178.64 beating Glidden's 7.67/183. He didn't have to wait long for his third as it came at the next NHRA race, the Springnationals. There WJ qualified #3 with a 7.64 with a track record speed of 181.52. A first-round 7.70/179.78 beat Sam Gianino while in round two Rivera fouled against him and WJ moved on with a 7.64/180.65. In the semifinals, his 7.66/180 stopped Leal's 7.74/178. In the final he was up against Allen. Bruce had problems and WJ took his twelfth NHRA National event title with a 7.68/180.44. Where was Glidden? He lost to Leal in round two. Warren made a stop at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Magazine Nationals where he dominated the race. He set track records of 7.61 and 180.72 in qualifying #1 for the eight-car field. Another 7.61 in the first round, beat Charlie Garrett and in the semifinals his 7.65/180.00 took out Dondero's 7.79/177. In the final he met Ronnie Manchester. Ronnie tried hard, but his 7.85/172 finished second best to WJ's 7.64/180.00. But then, just like that, the magic stopped. He would not win another NHRA National event in '85, and he would make only one more final round. Warren went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals where he qualified #2 with a 7.53/185.26 (Top Speed), but his first-round 7.62/180.36 lost to a quick-leaving Don Campanello who beat him with a 7.68/180. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, he qualified #2 again with a 7.55/183.29. He lasted until the second round. Warren was #2 in qualifying again at the NHRA Mile High Nationals with an 8.00/172.41. He won his first two rounds with runs of 8.04/172.08 and 8.01/172.08 over Fasching and Frank Iaconio. In the semifinals, he became the only other Pro Stock driver to run in the seven's besides Glidden here when he ran 7.99/172.74. Unfortunately, Bob was in the other lane running 7.96/173 to win. He also made it into the semifinals at the NHRA Northstar Nationals. He qualified #3 with a 7.67/180.72, and he beat Dempsey hardy in round one, with a 7.59/182.55. In the second round, Stan Mizell fouled and WJ advanced with a 7.68/182.55. Once again he faced Glidden in the semifinals and once again Glidden came out on top with a 7.57/183 to Warren's 7.60/183.67. At Indy, he was in the Pro Stock Challenge race. A race for the top qualifiers in all NHRA National events for the past twelve months. It was an eight-car field and WJ's 7.60/185.03 in the first round, advanced when Rivera fouled. In the semifinals, WJ fouled away a 7.66/180.14 against Leal who won with a 7.67/180. For the actual NHRA US Nationals, a 7.60/184.04 qualified #3. In the first round his 7.63/184.19 beat Fasching. In the second round, Rivera's 7.80/176 lost to his 7.60/182.11, but a strong 7.61/182.40 lost to Glidden's holeshot 7.66/181. As you can see, even though he was not winning, he was still running strong. The next stop was at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. A 7.52/183.59 qualified #2 behind Glidden's record-setting 7.49. He beat Dondero in the first round, by a tenth,7.57/183.15 to 7.67/179. In round two he carried over the same performance advantage over Iaconio with a 7.58/182.77 beating Frank's 7.68/180. It got closer in the semifinals where WJ's 7.61/182.33 beat Tony Christian's 7.65/180. This put Warren into the final against Allen. Bruce was sharp on the light and his 7.59/179 got the victory over WJ's quicker 7.57/182.70.
