Notes: Had an automatic shifter. Came out of nowhere to win Maple Grove using a unique automatic transmission. Listed times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. | Don attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but his best of 7.71/178.57 was good for the first alternate. At the NHRA Gatornationals, a 7.63/181.08 qualified #12. A 7.74/179.79 in the first round, lost to Gordie Rivera's 7.55/181. Beverly qualified in the dreaded #9 spot at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals with a 7.63/180.57. The #9 spot was dreaded because you had to run the #1 qualifier in the first round. Warren Johnson qualified #1, and sure enough, he beat Don in the first round. At the NHRA Cajun Nationals, Beverly qualified on the "bump" with a 7.71/179.74. He slowed to an 8.04/144.88 in the first round, that lost to Don Coonce's 7.79/176. He failed to qualify at the NHRA Springnationals, where he 7.73/180.25 best was the third alternate for the show. Things were much better at the NHRA Grandnationals, where he ran 7.64/180.72 to qualify #8. A 7.70/180.14 beat Frank Iaconio's 7.77/178 in the first round, but he fouled away a 7.79 against Bruce Allen in round two. He qualified #9 again at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals with a 7.54/181.52 but lost to low qualifier Bob Glidden in the first round. Another non-qualifier came at the NHRA Mile High Nationals in Dever. There, Don's 8.14/168.41 best was the first alternate. He rebounded by qualifying #7 at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals with a 7.69/181.08. Unfortunately, he lost to Jerry Eckman in the first round. Beverley ran great at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. He qualified #7 with a 7.53/182.92. A 7.63/182.30 beat Joe Clark's quicker 7.59/179 in the first round. In round two, a 7.58/182.29 beat Don Campanello, sending him into the semifinals for the first time in '86. There, he ran into eventual winner Glidden. Don ran a strong 7.53/182.96 but lost to Bob's 7.41/189. The next event showed that Don Beverly was for real. It was at Maple Grove on September 14 for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. Don qualified #4 with a strong 7.48/184.99. A 7.60/184.80 advanced past a fouling Eckman in round one, while in round two, his 7.49/184.88 advanced when Butch Leal fouled against him. Coonce's 7.73/163 fell behind in the semifinals as Beverly moved into the final with a 7.50/184.38. In the final, he met Allen in the Reher-Morrison Camaro. Don was not the underdog in the final, as Allen had run a 7.51 best in eliminations. Don scored his first-ever NHRA Pro Stock win in the final with a 7.54/184.42 over Bruce's 7.57/184.

Notes: Leal started the 1988 season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. His 7.42/186.14 qualified #8. He worked his way to the final, stopping Tony Christian in the semis with a 7.47/186, setting him up to face Mark Pawuk. A final round 7.45/186.95 gave Butch the victory. It was a great way to start the season. He almost doubled up at the NHRA Gatornationals, where he qualified #13 with a 7.40/188.12. It was a tough show to make as 55 cars attempted to qualify. He again reached the final, but a 7.41/187.22 finished runner-up to Bruce Allen's 7.36/189. He did not race at any IHRA events. His next stop was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Things didn't go too well there as he lost to Allen in the opening round. At the NHRA Mid-South Nationals at Memphis, his 7.49/186.06 qualified #12. He beat Larry Morgan and Jerry Eckman before losing a 7.52 decision to Kenny Delco's 7.50. It was then off to Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Unfortunately, Leal failed to qualify. He was the first alternate at 7.51/185.22. He rebounded by making it into the semis at the NHRA Springnationals, where he lost to Allen. The seventh NHRA race of the season was the Grandnationals in Canada. Butch qualified #12 for the show with a 7.44/186.02. He beat Harry Scribner in round one, and in round two, his 7.50/184 beat Frank Iaconio's quicker 7.46. He had a close race with Christian in the semifinals that saw both drivers hit 7.48 (Leal at 184), but Butch got the win light. He faced Morris Johnson Jr. in the final, but his car broke. He then went to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, failing to qualify.

Notes: It had been ten years since a Mopar had won in Pro Stock. Not since Bob Glidden had won the season-ending World Finals in his Arrow in '79. The Dodge Division hadn't won since 1971 when Mike Fons won the World Finals in a Challenger. So it was good to see a Dodge back in competition in NHRA Pro Stock racing with this Alderman-driven Daytona. The season didn't start so well when the team failed to qualify at Pomona for the Winternationals, but things got much better at the Supernationals at Houston where Darrell ran a 7.34 to qualify #7. He improved to a 7.31 in the first round, that beat Don Coonce, but in round two he fouled against Morris Johnson Jr. Alderman got his first ever NHRA win at the next event, the Gatornationals. He qualified #3 with a 7.34/187.51. He beat Kenny Delco and Reid Whisnant in the first two rounds before coming up against Glidden in the semifinals. In that race, both cars recorded 7.38's, but the Dodge got the win putting him in the final against Frank Iaconio. Darrell used a slight holeshot to take his win with a 7.39/186.25 beating Frank's 7.38/186. At the fourth event of the season, the Southern Nationals, a 7.41/185.98 qualified #8. He beat Mark Pawuk in the first round, but a 7.49/184.69 lost to Bruce Allen's 7.42/185 in round two. At Memphis for the Mid-South Nationals, Alderman ran 7.38/187.65 to qualify #11. A first-round 7.40 beat Whisnant and a 7.38/187 beat Don Beverley in round two. Unfortunately, he lost to Glidden in the semifinal. At the NHRA Cajun Nationals, a 7.45/184.91 qualified #7, but he was upset in the first round, by Joe Folgore. He went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals on May 21. Alderman qualified well and he beat Jerry Haas in the first round, with a 7.50/183.22. In round two, he beat Mark Pawuk with a 7.53/182.91 and a semifinal 7.54/182.16 beat low qualifier Larry Morgan's quicker 7.49/184. In the final, he met Warren Johnson. Alderman ran a 7.56/181.32 that finished runner up to WJ's 7.50/184. The NHRA Springnationals wasn't a good race for the teams as Alderman's best of 7.45/183.71 failed to qualify (first alternate). Things went better at the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada where a 7.44/185.07 qualified #11. A first-round 7.43/184.64 beat WJ's right there 7.43/184. In the second round, a 7.49/184.12 lost to Rickie Smith's 7.48/183. Darrell when to Milan International in Michigan for the IHRA Northern Nationals on July 2. He ran well, beating Larry Morgan's Oldsmobile in round two before losing to Smith in the semifinal. The following week (July 9), he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. He qualified #2 with a 7.38/187.57 and lasted until the second round before losing to Ken Koretsky. The next NHRA race was the Mile High Nationals in Denver in July. A 7.87/174.99 qualified #7 in the all seven second field. He beat Coonce in the first round, but in round two, Bruce Allen out drove him running a 7.87/175 to win over Alderman's quicker 7.85/175. At Sonoma for the NHRA California Nationals, Darrell qualified #6 with a 7.36/187.30. A first-round 7.39/186.72 beat Gary Herman, but once again he lost in the second round when his 7.44/186.64 lost to Jerry Eckman's 7.45/185. Seattle International was NHRA's next stop for the Seafair Nationals. The Dodge ran a 7.38/187.38 to qualify in the dreaded #9 spot. He faced low qualifier Beverley in the first round, and both ran 7.39's with Darrell coming out on top. After losing in the second round to holeshots at the last two events, Alderman jumped the gun in round two and fouled away a 7.41 against Glidden who ran a 7.40/185 to win. | Photo from 1989 Gatornationals.

Notes: #1 Pomona, number one qualifier, national ET record, quickest car 4 qualifying sessions, quickest car 4 rounds Sunday, won race against Bruce Allen in final. First win for a Bickel race car in NHRA Pro Stock. Won Columbus (3rd overall) over Rickie Smith (Rick Howard photo of Columbus Pro Stock final). Won Indy 1990 over defending champion Larry Morgan. 7.352 to 7.351 holeshot! | Jerry started the season strong. At the season opening NHRA Winternationals at Pomona, he qualified #1 with a 7.29 (Low ET of the meet) at 188.56. He went on to win by beating a fouling Jerry Haas in round one, with a 7.30/188.44, a 7.35/188.28 in round two beat Kenny Delco's 7.37/188 and a semifinal 7.30/188.36 beat Darrell Alderman's 7.35/186. He faced Bruce Allen in the final and his 7.33/188.12 got him the victory over Bruce's very close 7.33/188. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, Eckman looked strong again. He qualified #5 with a 7.32/187.85 and a first-round 7.33/187.30 stopped Gary Herman. In round two he beat Mark Pawuk's 7.40/185 with a 7.36/186.91. He went up against Bob Glidden in the semifinal and the Firebird broke giving Glidden an easy ride into the final. NHRA's next stop was at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals. Jerry qualified #5 with a 7.26/188.28. He advanced past a fouling Joe Lepone Jr. in the first round, with a 7.30/188.91, but another 7.26/188.75 in round two lost to a holeshot 7.28/188 by Allen. At the NHRA Gatornationals, the Pennzoil team came away with a new track record 7.27, but little else. Eckman qualified on the pole with a 7.29/187.96, but in round one, a holeshot 7.37 by Buddy Ingersoll beat his tenth quicker 7.27. Next stop was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. A 7.26/189.23 qualified #2 and in round one, he took out Herman. In the second round his 7.36/185 beat Glidden, but in the semifinal, he lost to Warren Johnson.

Notes: Runner-up to Bob Glidden at Houston Supernationals 3/89. Finished number 7 in the world in 1988, but finished out of the top ten in 1989. Morris started the NHRA season by qualifying #6 at the Winternationals with a 7.37. Another 7.37/185.68 beat Joe Lepone's 7.39/186 in the first round. He improved to a 7.35/186.76 in the second round to beat Larry Morgan's 7.35/186. In the semifinal, he fell off to a 7.66/183.37 that lost to Frank Iaconio's 7.39/185. He bettered that finish at the next event, the Supernationals, where he runner-upped to Bob Glidden. Bob's 7.25/190 Low ET and Top Speed of the meet stopped his 7.31/187.69 in the final. Morris qualified #3 with a 7.31. At the Gatornationals, with 50 cars attempting to qualify, Morris was #6. He lost to Rickie Smith in the first round. He took another first-round loss in Atlanta for the Southern Nationals where he qualified #10 with a 7.41/184.88 and lost to Warren Johnson. Things didn't go much better at the next NHRA event, the Mid South Nationals at Memphis. He qualified #10 again with a 7.37/186.06 and once again lost to WJ in the first round, only this time Morris fouled against him. He got past the first-round at the Cajun Nationals after qualifying #10 with a 7.47/183.55. He beat Joe Lepone in the first round, before losing to Larry Morgan's 7.51 with a 7.54. A best of 7.44/184.50 failed to make the field at the Springnationals. 7.428 184.99 NHRA Indianapolis IN 9/89 (2nd Alternate)

Notes: Harry was the fourteenth alternate at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals at 7.53/184.38. He also failed to qualify at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where he was the fifteenth alternate at 7.47/186.41. He was at the Texas Motorplex for the IHRA Texas Nationals in mid-April. His 7.42/185.41 qualified #11, but he lost to Jerry Eckman in the opening round. At Memphis, Scribner's 7.51/185.75 qualified #15 for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. In round one, his 7.55/184.80 advanced when Geoffrey Bailey fouled. In the second round, a 7.59/180.57 dropped Morris Johnson Jr's 7.62/185. He fouled against eventual winner Tony Christian in the semi-final. At the end of the month, his next stop was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Harry's 7.43/186.79 qualified #6. But he was late in round one, and his 7.45/186.14 fell to Joe Lepone's 7.51/183. He qualified #4 at the NHRA Grandnationals with a 7.42/186.38. He was upset in the first round by a quick-leaving Butch Leal. Shortly after, he was in Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northstar Nationals. He qualified with a 7.48 and improved to 7.47/186.10 in the first round to advance when Mark Pawuk broke. He made it to the semi-final, where his 7.51/185.10 beat Ken Koretsky's 7.59/184. He faced the T-Bird of Rickie Smith in the final, and Smith got the "jump." His 7.52/187 held off Scribner's quicker 7.49/185.07 runner-up effort. The following week (July 17), a 7.43/186.18 qualified #4 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Unfortunately, the car broke against Bruce Allen in the first round. The Scribners won their only NHRA National event at Sears Point this year. Harry's best ET was a weird 7.327 at only 178.57 at Houston Fall, followed by a 7.970/136 loss to Bob Glidden in round one. He was in the 7.40s all year, however. His best speed was the 188.56 at Sears Point.

Notes: Photo from 1990. | Bruce started the '91 season by running a 7.26/190.79 to qualify #3 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. In the first round, he ran 7.30/189.35 to beat Bob Glidden's 7.35/188. In the second round, he slipped to a 7.45/187.03 that lost to Jerry Eckman's 7.34/188. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, Allen qualified #9 with a 7.35/187.85. Unfortunately, a first-round 7.43/186.25 lost to Rickie Smith's 7.41/186. Houston was the next stop on the NHRA schedule for the Supernationals. He qualified #10 with a 7.31/188.60. Bruce beat Eckman in round one, and a 7.26 beat Smith's 7.28 in round two, but another 7.28/188.40 in the semifinals was not enough to stop Darrell Alderman's 7.21/190. The Gatornationals saw the Reher-Morrison team qualify #6 with a 7.25/190.47. Allen ran a 7.33/189.23 in the first round, to beat Mark Pawuk's 7.39/186. In round two he slowed even more, down to a 7.35/188.56 that lost to Eckman's 7.34/187.50. The next NHRA event was at Rockingham for the Winston Invitational. Allen qualified #4 with a 7.25/191.36. He beat Larry Morgan's 7.41/184 in the first round, with a 7.33/188.56. In round two, both he and Glidden ran 7.35 (Allen at 188.67), but Bob got the win. The fifth race of the year at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, Bruce qualified #8 with a 7.33/188.36.

Notes: Drag racing lost one of its most popular champions when Lee died in April 1985 in a crash at Ardmore, OK, during a testing session. He ran his final NHRA National event at Pomona in February for the Winternationals. His 7.603/181.23 qualified #2 behind Bob Glidden's 7.55/186. He ran 7.605 at 180.57 in the opening round of eliminations to defeat Tony Christian's 7.74/178. But in round two, holeshot artist Butch Leal did just that. He laid a holeshot on Shepherd that saw his 7.697/178 beat Lee's 7.666/179.78.

Jerry had been running about a tenth quicker, and in the final, Beverley had problems and shut off to 7.77/137.95, while Eckman got the victory with a 7.26/190. The next stop was at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals. Don qualified #9 with a 7.21/192.84. Unfortunately, he fouled against Yates in the first round. He really improved his qualifying at the NHRA Gatornationals, where he ran 7.16/194.09 for the #4 spot in the field. But once again, he lost early, this time to Lewis Worden in the first round. Don qualified #7 at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational with a 7.24/191.61. He improved to a 7.22/191.93 in his first-round win over Mark Pawuk, while in round two, a 7.26/191.28 took out Scott Geoffrion's 7.31/189. He lost a close race to Warren Johnson in the semifinals when his 7.24/191.44 lost to WJ's 7.22/192. The next stop on the NHRA tour was Atlanta for the Southern Nationals. Beverley got his second National event win and his first since '86. He qualified #3 for the show with a 7.23/192.43 and ran 7.25/191.57 over Joe LePone Jr. in the first round. A second-round 7.21/191.24 beat Smith, and another 7.21 at 191.44 in the semifinals beat Pawuk. In the final, he ran Geoffrion. Scott shut off with problems while Don motored to a 7.20/191.49 for the victory. It was then off to Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals, where he qualified #2 with a 7.25/191.00. He was still riding high after the win at Atlanta but was humbled in the first round, when he lost to Lucinda McFarlin. Don dropped off to a 7.44/191.12 that lost to her 7.34/188.95.

Notes: Rusty's dad, Bob, had heart surgery over the Winter and Rusty drove his father's car early in the year. He did very well. On January 28, he was at Houston for the Conoco Pro Stock Super Bowl. He ran three consecutive 7.07's during eliminations to reach the final against George Marnell. In the final, he scored the victory with a 7.08. The following week (February 5), he was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. A 7.13/194.51 qualified #13. In the opening round, he proved he could drive by getting out on Steve Schmidt and winning with a 7.15/192.67 over a quicker 7.11/195. But in round two, Scott Geoffrion's 7.12/194 beat his 7.18/192.84. Bob got back behind the wheel at the NHRA Arizona Nationals so Rusty was left without a ride, but not for long, as by the time they got to Houston for the NHRA Slick 50 Nationals, the team had a car for him as well. Unfortunately, Rusty’s best of 7.09/195.99 was good for the third alternate. At the NHRA Gatornationals, three Glidden's qualified for the field. Rusty’s 7.06/195.99 got him the #7 spot in the show. He beat Rickie Smith in the first round, before fouling against Larry Morgan in round two.

Notes: Glidden got an award before turning a wheel in '90 when he was awarded the "Racer of the Decade" by Motorweek Illustrated in January. He beat out some heavy competition for the award, including Bill Elliott, Rusty Wallace, Geoff Brabham, Steve Kinser, and Alain Prost. His 49 wins in the NHRA competition during the '80s were impressive. The NHRA season started in February at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Bob qualified #5 with a 7.33/189.27. He beat Stan Mizell in round one, with a 7.36/188.04, but in round two, his 7.36/187.73 lost to Darrell Alderman's 7.32/187. He got back into his winning ways at the NHRA Arizona Nationals. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with track records of 7.28/189.79. A 7.34/187.18 beat Butch Leal's 7.43/185 in the first round, while a 7.35/186.95 in round two took out Kenny Delco's 7.43/185. Jerry Eckman broke in the semifinals against him, and Bob advanced with a 7.40/186.25. He met Gordie Rivera in the final, and a 7.35/185.79 scored Glidden his 77th NHRA National event title over Rivera's 7.41/186. Houston was the next stop on the NHRA tour for the Supernationals. Bob ran 7.25/190.15 (Top Speed) to qualify #3. Buddy Ingersoll fouled against him in the first round, and Bob's 7.27/189.71 advanced. In the second round, he slowed to 7.30/189.71, which lost to Delco's 7.28/188. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Bob qualified #8 with a 7.35/187.81. He beat Morris Johnson Jr. in the first round, and a 7.36/188 beat Ingersoll in round two, but he lost to Rickie Smith in the semifinals. Photo from Columbus 1989.
