Notes: Started the season with a runner-up finish at the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #2 with a 7.07 at a track record speed of 195.77. A first-round 7.16/194.51 beat David Rampy, while in round two, his 7.19/192.88 beat Jim Yates' close 7.20/191. Kurt Johnson fouled against him in the semifinals, and he ran 7.12/193.92 to advance into the finals. There he met up with Kurt's dad, Warren Johnson. The two had a good race, but WJ's 7.09/195 got the victory over Darrell's 7.12/193. At the NHRA Quality Care Nationals at Arizona, Alderman set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 7.07 at 194.59. Once again, he worked his way into the final by beating Jerry Haas in round one, with a 7.11/193.79, then Larry Morgan lost to Darrell's 7.15/193.54 in round two, and in the semifinals, a 7.11/193.79 beat Kurt Johnson. He met his teammate Scott Geoffrion in the final, and although both ran 7.11 (Alderman at 194.21), Scott got his second NHRA victory. Alderman qualified #2 at the NHRA Slick 50 Nationals with a 7.06/194.84 behind his teammate, Geoffrion's 7.03/196. An opening round 7.13 beat Tim Jost, and in round two, Larry Morgan got out of shape against him. Alderman advanced with a 7.07/195. But in the semifinal, he lost to eventual winner WJ. The Gatornationals was the next event on the NHRA calendar, and Darrell qualified #3 there with a 7.12/195.39. He improved to 7.08/195.31 in the opening round to beat Jost's 7.28/189. In round two, his 7.10/195.77 stopped Morgan at 7.19/193, and a 7.09/196.12 beat Goffrion's 7.13/194 in the semifinal. He faced WJ in the final, and Darrell had lane choice. Unfortunately, Darrell fouled away a 7.11/195.27 in their race, and WJ grabbed the victory with a 7.13/195. Even though no points were involved, Alderman scored a big win at Rockingham for the NHRA Invitational race. He qualified #6 with a 7.11/195.90 and another 7.11 at 194.25 beat Rickie Smith's 7.20/191 in the first round. He got quicker in round two, where his 7.08/194.80 took care of Bob Glidden's 7.19/192. David Rampy's 7.31/183 fell to Alderman's 7.12/193.71 in the semifinal. He ran his teammate in the final, and Darrell got a good light, and his 7.16/193.79 held on to win over Geoffrion's quicker 7.13/193. Things did not go nearly as well at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. He had "only" qualified #12 with a 7.16/194.34, and in the opening round of competition, his 7.20/192.96 lost to Jim Yates' 7.15/190. He came back from that by winning the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. His 7.11/194.46 qualified #1, and he repeated that time in the first round(at 195.14 for Top Speed)to advance over a broken Mike Thomas. He then set Low ET in round two with a 7.10/194.63 that took out Yates' 7.22/191. Alderman had his closest race in the semifinal, where he used a 7.14/194.42 to beat Kurt Johnson's 7.16/193. Once again, he battled his teammate for the win. This time Alderman made it look easy as his 7.14/190.71 easily beat Scott's 7.21/191. Rick Howard photo from 1994 NHRA Oldsmobile Springnats, Columbus. Qualified second at 7.21/193.05. In round one, he defeated Mike Thomas with an improved 7.16/193.92 and got by Mark Osborne to reach the semis. He lost to Jim Yates. Returned after a suspension. The second member of the Holley Six-Second Club on August 5/1994, with a 6.994 at Seattle.

Notes: Darrell was the fifth alternate at the Texas Motorplex for the NHRA Lone Star Nationals with a 7.05/195.56. At Englishtown, for the NHRA Mopar Parts Nationals, his 6.95/197.41 qualified #4. In the opening round of eliminations, Alderman ran a career-best (to this point) 6.94/198.28 to beat Terry Adams' 6.98/197. In the second round, Steve Schmidt fouled, so Darrell's 7.07/172.91 advanced. In the semifinal, he caught a great light that saw his 6.96/196.67 beat Jim Yates' quicker 6.91/198. He faced Bruce Allen in the final, and a 6.98/196.20 gave him his first win since the '95 Gatornationals. It was Alderman's 27th NHRA National event victory. The team recorded best times at NHRA Richmond at 6.937/198.76. | Won two national events in 1997 (Englishtown and Topeka), qualified # 1 at Rockingham. I was not released by Mopar; I chose not to renew my contract with Mopar due to differences with Mopar management over how to run a Pro Stock team (I guess that the director of motorsports knew more about how to race in the NHRA than I did). - Dale Eicke

Notes: Darrell went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he ran a best of 6.99/195.99 in qualifying. Unfortunately, that left him as the first alternate for the show. He was the eleventh alternate at the NHRA Arizona Nationals with a 7.12/196.07 best. He made the field at the NHRA Gatornationals, where Alderman's 6.95/199.51 qualified #14. But he fouled away a 6.94/199.24 in the first round against Jim Yates. Darrell had to gamble on the 'tree as Yates won with a 6.87/199. Shortly after that, he was in Houston for the NHRA Supernationals. A 6.900/198.41 was the quickest non-GM car and #6 overall. He broke against Mark Pawuk in the opening round. Alderman was at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational in the first week of April. Not a single non-GM car qualified as Darrell's 7.02/196.29 was the ninth alternate. He also failed to qualify at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. There, he was the twelfth alternate at 7.06/196.80. The team was at Richmond for the NHRA Pennzoil Nationals at the end of April. Once again, he failed to qualify, but he was close (first alternate) at 6.97/197.84. Both the Mopar teams qualified in the top half of the field at Texas for the NHRA Lone Star Nationals. They were the only non-GM cars in the field. Darrell's 7.03/196.97 qualified #7, and he improved to 7.01/196.24 in the first round to beat Tom Martino's out of shape 8.13/124. In the second round, his 7.04/191.40 fell to eventual winner Mike Edwards' 7.03/194. Rick Howard photo from 1998 NHRA Pontiac excitement Nats, Columbus, where he was a DNQ with a best of 7.11 on a 7.09 bump. His best speed of the year was the 199.51 at NHRA Gainesville.

Notes: Bruce was still driving his own car up until Reher-Morrison hired him to start driving their Camaro starting at the Cajun Nationals. He was running pretty good with his own stuff, qualifying #6 at the Gatornationals with a 7.70/177.23. He also made the show at the Southern Nationals with a 7.69/180.07 qualifying #3.

Notes: Bruce's first time out with the Reher-Morrison team in NHRA competition was at the NHRA Cajun Nationals in May. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 7.54 at 182.03. Unfortunately, he got out of shape in the first round, and shut off to 8.50 in a loss to Frank Iaconio. He was also racing the team's other Camaro on the IHRA circuit and was gaining experience. By the time he got to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, he had already won a race in IHRA competition. So at the Springnationals, he qualified #2 with a 7.63/178.07 behind Bob Glidden's 7.57/181. He beat Don Campanello in the first round, with a 7.66/175.84, while in round two, a 7.70/180.65 advanced when Gordie Rivera fouled. In the semifinals, Bruce's 7.68/176 stopped Iaconio's 7.74/178 and moved him into his first NHRA National Event final. His opponent was Warren Johnson. Allen had problems and slowed to 9.34 while Johnson got the victory with a 7.68. Allen did not have to wait long before getting his first NHRA victory as it came at the next NHRA event, the Grandnationals in Canada. He had set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 7.512 at 184.19. Won 1985 NHRA Mr. Gasket Pro Stock Challenge at Indy. Bruce qualified second at the 1985 NHRA Springnats in Columbus at 7.63/178.07. He then defeated Don Campanello, Joe Lepone, and Frank Iaconio to reach the finals. He lost to Warren Johnson. - Rick Howard | Won Maple Grove 9/85 on a holeshot over WJ in the final round.

Notes: Levi Garrett chewing tobacco sponsorship. Listed times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. Allen qualified second at the US Nationals with a 7.46/186.33 and lasted until the final only to lose a 7.50/188.63 to 7.70/161.84 decision to Bob Glidden. Allen started the season by qualifying fourth at the NHRA Winternats with a 7.58/181.08. A first-round 7.59/180.36 beat Gordie Rivera, but a second round 7.64/179.64 lost to Warren Johnson's 7.53/183. He then raced at the Gatornationals where a 7.65/183.52 beat Joe Clark and a 7.69/178.34 beat Bob Glidden moving him into the semis where a quicker 7.52/179.49 lost to Butch Leal's 7.54/183. It was on to the Southern Nats where a 7.55/181.24 qualified third. He made it into the semis before losing to Johnson. At the Cajun Nats in June, a 7.59/181.67 qualified fifth, but WJ seemed to have Allen's number. The two met in the second round and despite a quicker 7.61/176.22 he lost to WJ's 7.63/183. At the Spring Nats he again qualified fifth with a 7.59/178.11. He beat Lee Dean in the first round, with a 7.65/175.40 before falling in the second round to WJ again. This time Allen's 7.68/176.53 lost to WJ's 7.64/182.77.

Notes: The Reher and Morrison team debuted their Beretta at Denver near the end of July for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Driver Bruce Allen qualified #2 with a 7.96/173.61 behind Bob Glidden's 7.88/175. These two would eventually meet in the final. Bruce's opening round 8.00/172.97 beat Reid Whisnant's 8.08/169. In round two, he advanced with an 8.07/155.11 when Warren Johnson fouled against him. But all was not easy for the team as they had dropped a valve on the pass and changed engines for the semifinal. In that race, his 8.03/172.71 took out Joe Lepone's quicker 8.02/172. The problem was that Glidden was running low 7.9s throughout eliminations. Allen picked it up to a 7.99/173.37 in the final between the two, but so did Bob as he set Low ET to win with a 7.87/171. The next race on the NHRA schedule was the Northstar Nationals. Allen again followed Glidden in qualifying with a 7.55/183.11, second behind Bob's 7.49/184. And once again, these two would advance into the final together. Allen started his run with a 7.53/183.11 over Don Coonce's 7.61/181. A round two 7.53/183.63 beat Tony Christian's 7.62/183, and in the semifinals, his 7.57/183.41 beat Nick Nikolis' 7.75/181. Bob ran 7.4s in the first two rounds before tire shake slowed him to 7.58 in the semifinal. Most expected him to drop right back into the 7.4s in the final, but he didn't, and his 7.58/181 finished runner-up to Allen's 7.53/183.67. It was Allen's fourth NHRA National event victory and his first since the '85 Keystone Nationals. The team then made the trip to Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. There was a race within a race as the lowest eight qualifiers over the year competed in the Mr. Gasket Pro Stock Challenge race. Bruce had amassed enough points to qualify second behind you-know-who in the T-Bird. Allen reached the final by running 7.52/184.72 over Lee Dean's 7.55/182 and 7.56/185.18 over an off-pace Gary Brown at 8.89. Once again, he faced Glidden in another final, and Bruce ran his slowest of the day, a 7.64/184.99, to finish second to Bob's 7.54/188. The next day, for the actual race, Allen found himself way back in the qualifying order (#11) with his 7.52/184.72. In the opening round, he fouled away a 7.54 against Jerry Eckman, who advanced with a 7.52. He was back in the #2 spot after qualifying ended at the NHRA Keystone Nationals with a 7.47/185.10. This was still a ways back from Glidden's pole-winning 7.40. But Bruce improved to 7.43/185.68 in the first round to beat Butch Leal's 7.45/184. He had a close race against Eckman in round two where both ran 7.48 (Allen at 186.10), but Bruce got the win light. He faced Christian in the semifinals, but a broken transmission ended the Beretta's run there. At the NHRA Chief Nationals, a 7.41/186.56 qualified #5. Jerry Haas fouled against him in round one, and Allen's 7.42/186.60 advanced. In round two, he faced Glidden, and Allen's 7.42/186.60 lost to the Ford driver's 7.37/188. Things went pretty much the same at the NHRA Fallnationals. He qualified #8 with a 7.57/184.04 and a slightly better 7.55/183.33 in the opening round beat Jeff Velde, but he lost in round two again. This time to Warren Johnson. Allen's 7.63/182.70 wasn't enough to get around WJ's 7.59/183. At the NHRA season-ending World Finals at Pomona. Allen's 7.46/185.75 qualified #7. He beat Jerry Haas in the first round, with a 7.51/185.10, but in round two, his 7.54/185.14 lost to Brown's 7.50/185.

Notes: The Reher-Morrison team used the Camaro until they debuted the Ness-built Beretta at the NHRA Mile High Nationals. The team started the year at Pomona with the Camaro for the NHRA Winternationals, where Bruce Allen qualified the car #3 with a 7.47/184.57. Unfortunately, Allen fouled away a 7.56 in the first round and lost to Don Coonce's 7.59. At the NHRA Gatornationals, the team qualified #4 with a 7.47/186.45. Bruce improved to a 7.45/186.29 in the first round to beat Reid Whisnant. A 7.49/186 in round two took out Coonce, but in the semifinals, he slowed to 7.52/185, which was not enough to get around Butch Leal's 7.44/186. The next stop was at the Texas Motorplex for the NHRA Winston All-Stars race. The Pro categories were eight-car fields, so qualifying was tough. Allen qualified #3 with a 7.38/186.68, but in the first round, he lost to a holeshot by Joe Lepone. His 7.39/186.14 lost to Joe's 7.44/184. Bruce made it to the semifinals at the Gators but lost to Butch Leal there. He made it to the semis at NHRA Atlanta as well. Bruce ran his best speed of the year with a booming 7.52/188.52 and made it to the finals at the Cajun Nats, but he lost to Butch Leal. Rick Howard took this photo at the Columbus race, where Bruce qualified 11th at 7.60/182.62 mph. He lost to eventual winner Bob Glidden in the semifinals. Bruce was runner-up to Leal at the Sanair Grandnationals as well. He made it to the finals at the Summernationals but finished runner-up to Jerry Eckman. The team debuted their new Beretta at the Mile High Nationals.

Notes: Bruce Allen won many races over the years he was driving for Reher-Morrison, but he was a lot like Frank Iaconio had been a few years earlier. Finishing second in the NHRA points chase many years but never getting that championship. Allen started the '89 season by qualifying #3 at the Winternationals with a 7.34/188.04, but he lost to Jerry Eckman in the first round. At Houston for the Supernationals, he qualified #4 with a 7.32 and improved to a 7.29 in the first round, to beat Rickie Smith. He stayed strong in round two with a 7.30 to beat Eckman's 7.32. But despite another 7.29/188.32 in the semifinals, he lost to Bob Glidden's even stronger 7.26/189. The next race was the Gatornationals, where a 7.33/188.67 qualified #2. He beat Jerry Haas in the first round, and a 7.37/187 beat Smith in the second round. Iaconio drilled him on the tree in the semifinal and won with a 7.39, beating his 7.36. Bruce made his first final of the year at the next race, the Southern Nationals. He qualified #4 with a 7.36/186.99 and beat Joe Folgore and Darrell Alderman in the first two rounds. In the semifinal, he beat Smith's 7.49/184 with a 7.41/185.52, putting him in the final against Glidden. In the final, Bruce ran a consistent 7.42/185.60 that lost to Bob's 7.35/186. At the next race, the Mid-South Nationals at Memphis, Bruce qualified poorly (for them) with a 7.37/187.03 for the dreaded #9 spot. That set up a first-round meeting with Glidden, which Allen lost. Things went much better at the Cajun Nationals. Bruce set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 7.41/185.10. He beat Iaconio and Smith in the first two rounds before running a 7.45/184 to beat Folgore in the semis. In the final, he was up against holeshot artist Butch Leal. Bruce did his job in the race, and a 7.45/184.72 beat Leal's 7.51/183 giving the Reher-Morrison team its first win of the season. The Springnationals was the next race on the NHRA tour. Allen ran a 7.36/185.83 to qualify #2. He beat Smith in round one, and a 7.40/185 beat Iaconio in round two. But in the semifinals, both he and his opponent Joe Lepone Jr. ran 7.41's at 185, but Joe got the win. It was then up to Canada for the Grandnationals. Bruce qualified #6 with a 7.40/185.37. In the first round, he beat Kenny Delco's 7.50/184 with a 7.42/184.64. A 7.40/185.75 beat Don Beverley's Olds in round two at 7.43/183. In the semifinals, a 7.39/185.58 beat Ken Koretsky's 7.61/181. Bruce took his second win of the year with a final round 7.37/185.37 over Iaconio's runner-up effort of 7.43/185. It wasn't a long wait for his third win as it came at the next race, the Summernationals at Englishtown. He qualified #4 there with a 7.38/187.69. In round one, he beat Rickie Smith (who met with Allen a lot in the first round), and Gary Brown fouled against him in round two. In the semifinals, a 7.42/186 beat Koretsky's 7.51. In the final, a 7.44/186 beat Beverley's 7.46. It was then off to the thin air of Denver for the Mile High Nationals. Bruce ran a 7.85/175.26 to qualify #3. He beat Beverley in the first round and, in round two, grabbed a holeshot win with a 7.87/175, beating Alderman's 7.85/175. In the semifinal, a strong 7.88 still ended up second best to Glidden's 7.83. At the California Nationals, Bruce set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 7.30/188.28. Once again, he met Smith in the first round, but this time Rickie took a 7.41/186 win over Allen's off pace 7.53/185.83. The tour traveled to Seattle for the Seafair Nationals, where a 7.35/187.30 qualified #3. In round one, a 7.37/186.83 beat Morris Johnson Jr's 7.40/185. In round two, another 7.37/187.03 beat Koretsky's 7.55/185. Bruce made like a bracket racer in the semifinals with his third straight 7.37, this time at 186.72 in a satisfying win over Glidden's 7.42/185. In the final, he slipped to a 7.39/186.41 that lost to Warren Johnson's slower 7.41/185. He made up for his little snooze in the final by winning the next event, the Northstar Nationals. He qualified #2 with a 7.44/184.50. He beat Lepone in round one, and a 7.47/184.99 beat Alderman's 7.49/184 in round two. He had a close semifinal race with Larry Morgan with his 7.45/185.22 nipping Morgan's 7.46/185. In the final, he faced "the man" Glidden and his Probe. The Chevy vs. Ford match-up was a good one, and in the final run, both cars ran 7.43's at 185, but Bruce got his fourth and final win of the year. At the US Nationals, the Reher-Morrison team set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 7.35/186.60. Bruce beat Gary Herman in the first round, with a 7.40/186.48. In round two, he beat Alderman's 7.44/185 with a 7.37/186.21. In the semifinal, he came up against Morgan's strong running Olds. Allen ran a 7.43/185 but lost to the eventual winners' 7.40/186. At the next race, the Keystone Nationals at Maple Grove, a 7.35/186.68 qualified #4. In the first round, he and Reid Whisnant both ran 7.37's with Allen advancing. In the second round, a 7.36/186.21 beat Koretsky's 7.44/186. He cut a mean light in the semifinals and beat Morgan's quicker 7.33/187 with a 7.37/186.29. In the final, he was matched with Glidden and a 7.37/186.76 lost to Bob's 7.36/187. He should've stayed home on October 8. That day he was at the Texas Motorplex for the NHRA Chief Nationals. A 7.32/187.73 qualified #7, and in the first round, he beat Gary Brown with a 7.32/188.32, but when he pulled the 'chute, the wind caught it and sent the two-week-old Beretta into the opposite lane's retaining wall. The car then went back across the track, hitting the wall in his own lane as well. Bruce was OK, but he smashed up the car pretty badly.

Notes: Started the season by qualifying #3 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.32/187.96. He made his way to the final by stopping Gary Herman's 7.40/186 in round one, with a 7.35/18.81, in round two a 7.34/188.44 beat Mark Pawuk while a semifinal 7.34/186.67 beat Warren Johnson's 7.36/188. In the final he met up with Jerry Eckman. Both ran 7.33 (Allen at 188.44), but Jerry got the win. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, he again qualified #3 with a 7.29/188.28. He slowed to 7.38/186.68 in the first round, but it was still enough to beat Darrell Alderman's Dodge. An easy 7.53/163.87 advanced in round two when Ken Koretsky broke, but in the semifinals, his 7.45/186.41 lost to Gordie Rivera's 7.43/184. The next stop was at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals. A 7.260/188.52 qualified #4. He stayed strong running 7.27/189.07 in round one, over Dester Cambron and 7.28/188.79 in round two over Jerry Eckman's quicker, but later 7.26/188. In the semifinals, his 7.29/188.38 took out Rickie Smith and set up a final round meeting with WJ. Warren got the win with a 7.25/189 when Bruce shut off with problems to an 8.50/117.21. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #3 with a 7.32/188.12. He beat Joe LePone Jr in the first round, before losing to Scott Geoffrion in round two. Allen set a track record in qualifying #1 at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. His 7.260 at 189.83 got him the spot. In the first round, he beat Frank Sanchez, but in round two he lost to the race's eventual winner Larry Morgan. At the NHRA Mid-South Nationals, Allen didn't do so well. He qualified #9 and lost in the first round. The seventh race on NHRA's schedule was the Cajun Nationals. Bruce ran 7.35/188.24 to qualify #5 and in round one, he beat Don Beverley. An off-pace 7.51 in round two lost to Pawuk's 7.43. The NHRA Springnationals was another bad outing for the team. They qualified #9 and lost to Alderman in the first round. It was off to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals next and Bruce ran 7.38 to qualify #8. He beat Frank Iaconio in the first round, before losing to Eckman's 7.35 in round two with a 7.40. Allen had his worst qualifying position (#14) of the year at the NHRA Summernationals. In round one he lost to Lepone Jr.

Notes: Photo from 1990. | Bruce started the '91 season by running a 7.26/190.79 to qualify #3 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. In the first round, he ran 7.30/189.35 to beat Bob Glidden's 7.35/188. In the second round, he slipped to a 7.45/187.03 that lost to Jerry Eckman's 7.34/188. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, Allen qualified #9 with a 7.35/187.85. Unfortunately, a first-round 7.43/186.25 lost to Rickie Smith's 7.41/186. Houston was the next stop on the NHRA schedule for the Supernationals. He qualified #10 with a 7.31/188.60. Bruce beat Eckman in round one, and a 7.26 beat Smith's 7.28 in round two, but another 7.28/188.40 in the semifinals was not enough to stop Darrell Alderman's 7.21/190. The Gatornationals saw the Reher-Morrison team qualify #6 with a 7.25/190.47. Allen ran a 7.33/189.23 in the first round, to beat Mark Pawuk's 7.39/186. In round two he slowed even more, down to a 7.35/188.56 that lost to Eckman's 7.34/187.50. The next NHRA event was at Rockingham for the Winston Invitational. Allen qualified #4 with a 7.25/191.36. He beat Larry Morgan's 7.41/184 in the first round, with a 7.33/188.56. In round two, both he and Glidden ran 7.35 (Allen at 188.67), but Bob got the win. The fifth race of the year at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, Bruce qualified #8 with a 7.33/188.36.

Notes: The Reher & Morrison team debuted a new Chevy Lumina for the '92 season. The first time out, Bruce took it to Houston for pre-season testing. He was rewarded with times of 7.15 and 7.14, both at 193. He qualified the car #7 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.220/191.85. He beat Frank Iaconio in the first round, before losing to Jerry Eckman's 7.20 in the second round with a 7.272/190.35. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, a 7.257/190.71 qualified #5. He improved to a 7.245/190.27 in the first round, that beat Joe LePone Jr., but he lost to Warren Johnson in round two, 7.29/190 to Bruce's off pace 7.66/145. At Houston for NHRA's third race of the year, the Supernationals, Allen set Low ET of the meet in qualifying #1 with a 7.164/191.97. He slowed to 7.336/189.67 in the first round, but still beat a broken Gary Brown. In round two, he beat Yates' 7.24/189 with a 7.219/190.79. He pushed the tree a little too hard in the semifinals and fouled away a 7.186/191.61 that lost to eventual winner Mark Pawuk's 7.22/190. At Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, Bruce qualified #7 with a 7.185/193.09 (tough show!). A 7.20/192.47 advanced past Kenny Delco's 7.25/190 in the first round, but he lost to Larry Morgan in round two. Bruce's 7.26/191.53 lost to Morgan's 7.21/191. Rockingham hosted the NHRA Winston Invitational in April. Allen qualified #9 at 7.24/189.87. He beat Yates in round one, with a 7.21/191.20, but he lost to Jerry Eckman in the second round. The next event was the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta. Bruce qualified #2 with a 7.237/190.35. Unfortunately, a first-round 7.33/189.27 lost to Pawuk's 7.29/187. Another first-round loss came at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. He qualified #4 with a 7.265/190.92, but he lost to Lewis Worden with a 12-second shutoff. The bad luck streak continued into the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified #10 with a 7.317/189.03, but a 7.286/188.83 lost to Yates' holeshot 7.30/188 in the first round. Things went the team's way at the NHRA Grandnationals. Bruce pushed the car to a 7.247/191.12 to qualify #4. Another 7.24 at 191.57 beat Paul Rebeschi in the first round, while in round two, a 7.30/190.31 took out Rickie Smith, and in the semifinals, his 7.296/190.67 beat Johnson who had tire shake and slowed to 7.49/190. This put him into the final against Yates. In the final, Yates had problems and slowed to 7.86/172 while Bruce picked up the victory with a 7.270/190.63. It was Allen's first NHRA National event win since the 1990 NHRA Northstar Nationals. Bruce qualified #2 at the Summarnationals at 7.267/190.03. He beat a surprising Kenny Delco in round one, by holeshot, 7.326/189 to 7.322/188. He beat a broken Frank Iaconio in round two with a 7.34/189 but then fell to Ricky Smith in the semis, 7.29/189 to 7.35/189. Bruce qualified #10 at Denver at 7.69/178. He lost to Bob Glidden in round one, to of all things, a holeshot, 7.75/178 to Bruce's 7.68/178. The team qualified #5 at Sonoma at 7.212/191.20, but Glidden got him in round one, again, 7.25/191 to 7.26/190. Bruce qualified #8 in Seattle at 7.218/189.99 but got upset in round one, by Pal Rebeschi, 7.27/189 to 7.33/189. Bruce ran 7.29/188.44 in Brainerd to grab the #7 slot. He beat Alban Gauthier in round one, 7.38/186 to 7.50/167, but WJ got him in round two, 7.34/189 to 7.39/186. At Indy, Bruce qualified #6 with a 7.256/190.47, but Rickie Smith ended his day in round one, 7.29/189 to 7.33/188. Bruce found himself in the bottom half of the field at Maple Grove; his 7.224/190.07 entered the field in the #12 position. He lost to Jerry Eckman in round one, 7.19/191 to 7.25/189. The team entered Topeka in the #7 position at 7.264/189.99. Rickie Smith fouled against Bruce in round one, and Allen got a 7.258/190.35 victory. But nemesis WJ won their round two match, 7.20/192 to 7.28/189. Allen found the 'teens at Ennis; his 7.158/192.02 earned the #5 qualifying position. In round one, he beat Mike Thomas, 7.167/191.89 to a fouling but surprising 7.173/191.44. Geoffrion ended Bruce's day in round two, 7.19/191 to 7.22/190. Bruce ended his season with a #7 qualifying effort at the World Finals at 7.220/191.36. He beat Joe Lepone Jr. in round one, 7.215/191.04 to 7.24/190. Bob Glidden defeated the Super Shops Chevy in the second round, 7.19/192 to 7.226/190.67. It was a hard-fought but disappointing year for the once-dominant team.

Notes: At Pomona for the season-opening NHRA Winternationals, Bruce qualified #9 with a 7.23/191.89. A first-round 7.25/190.96 beat Larry Morgan's 7.26/190. In round two, a 7.24/191.44 lost to Warren Johnson's 7.15/193. He qualified #9 again at the next NHRA race, the Arizona Nationals, where a 7.26/190.23 got the spot. A first-round 7.25/190.07 beat Paul Rebeschi's 7.31/190. In round two, a 7.24/190.67 beat a late Warren Johnson at 7.22/192. In the semifinals, he fell to Mark Pawuk's 7.23/191 with a 7.25/191.12. At the Slick 50 Supernationals at Houston, Bruce qualified #6 with a 7.13/193.54. A first-round 7.19/191.93 lost to Rebeschi's 7.20/190. The next stop on the NHRA trail was the Gatornationals. There Allen ran 7.15/193.42 to qualify #12 (tough show). The "Super Shops" Lumina was the only Chevy that qualified for the field. He lost to Pawuk in the first round. After that, it was off to the NHRA Winston Invitational. Bruce used a 7.14/193.00 to qualify #6, but a first-round 7.18/193.96 lost to Jim Yates' 7.19/193. He qualified #8 with a 7.20/192.47 at Atlanta for the Southern Nationals. In the first round, both he and Bob Glidden ran 7.24's, but Bob got the win. The sixth spot on the NHRA tour was at Memphis for the Mid-South Nationals. Once again, only one Chevy qualified, and it was Allen's. A 7.23/190.83 qualified #9. In the first round, a 7.26/190.23 beat Rebeschi's 7.31/189. A consistent 7.26/189.63 lost to eventual winner Scott Geoffrion's 7.16/192. At Englishtown for the Mopar Parts Nationals, the Reher-Morrison team had to be disappointed that they did not earn enough points qualifying throughout the year to take part in the Budweiser Pro Stock Challenge. For the actual race, Allen qualified #13 with a 7.18/192.47. In the first round, he got around Vince Khoury's 7.42/190 with a 7.37/188.32 as both had sub-par runs. In round two, a 7.30/190.55 beat Frank Iaconio, but in the semifinals, his 7.23/191.48 lost to Warren Johnson's 7.19/194. In Mid-June, the team was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Bruce ran an excellent 7.24/190.63 to qualify the lone Chevy #4 in the field. But he was upset in the opening round, Lewis Worden took a gamble on the tree, and it paid off with his 7.32/188 holding off Allen's quicker,7.27/189.83. Shortly after that, they stopped at Topeka, Kansas, for the NHRA Western Nationals. Two Chevys qualified, and Bruce was quicker, running 7.29/189.35 for the #11 spot. Both lost in the first round, with Allen losing to Morgan. Oldsmobile's support of the Pro Stock class was deep in these years, and more and more drivers were switching to Olds. As a result, when the NHRA tour got to Denver for the Mile High Nationals, over half of the field was made up of Cutlass'.Bruce qualified #11 with a 7.68/176.85. Only one other Chevy made the show. Both were gone after the opening round. Allen's 7.76/177.61 fell to Steve Schmidt's 7.67/180. Allen picked it up at Sonoma for the NHRA California Nationals. The lone Chevy qualifier ran 7.20/191.44 to qualify #3. He took out Mark Osborne's 7.34/190 in the opening round with a 7.28/190.55. In the second round, he lost to Rusty Glidden. Bruce's best times were at NHRA Houston Spring at 7.130/193.54.

Notes: The Reher-Morrison was at Houston for the NHRA Slick 50 Nationals. Allen qualified #13 with a 7.145/193.59 and had the only Chevrolet in the field. Unfortunately, he lost to Kurt Johnson in the opening round, 7.17/192 to 7.207/192.55. Bruce's only other NHRA national event was the Western Auto Nats in June, where he was a disappointing mid-pack DNQ at 7.366/188.48. Was the team's lack of participation on the circuit because of a crash?

Notes: Allen was the sixth alternate at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.209/192.51 best. The team also failed to qualify for the NHRA Arizona Nationals, where Bruce was the ninth alternate at 7.240/191.93. Houston didn't go much better as his 7.170/193.92 best was the eleventh alternate. These shows were tough to make as many good cars were running at the time. It had to be hard for a multi-race winning team such as this that had so much success in the class to see their car among the non-qualifiers. Things went better at Gainesville. Forty cars showed up and attempted to qualify for the sixteen-car field. Allen qualified on the "bump" with a 7.104/195.10. In the opening round, he ran a 7.103 at 194.67 but fell to low qualifier Warren Johnson's 6.95/198. It was then off to Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational, where Bruce was the first alternate at 7.13/194.51. This was followed by a trip to Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where he was the third alternate at 7.170/193.38. Memphis was the next stop on the NHRA calendar for the Mid-South Nationals. Allen's 7.181/193.63 best was the ninth alternate there. While the team ran better at Englishtown for the NHRA Mopar Parts Nationals, their 7.140/193.59 best was still the third alternate for the show. Richmond found more of the same. Allen was the fourth alternate for the NHRA Virginia Nationals with a 7.196/192.59. He qualified #14 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 7.234/190.72. In round one, Bruce's 7.326/189.59 lost to eventual winner Steve Schmidt's 7.18/192. He was left outside looking in at Topeka for the NHRA Western Nationals, where his 7.137/192.96 was the first alternate. He also failed to qualify at Denver for the NHRA Mile-High Nationals, where his 7.620/180.90 was the fourth alternate. The headaches continued at Sonoma, where Bruce's 7.182/194.04 was the fifth alternate for the NHRA Autolite Nationals. Seattle saw his 7.140/192.88 claim the second alternate slot for the NHRA Northwest Nationals, and Brainerd was no different as he was the third alternate at 7.223/191.40 for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. Everyone was at Indy for the NHRA U.S. Nationals, and Allen ran well, just not well enough, as he was the third alternate at 7.157/193.09. The only other race he qualified for this season was the NHRA Pioneer Keystone Nationals at Maple Grove. His 7.073/194.63 got him the #15 spot in the field. Unfortunately, he did not win a single round of competition this season as Jim Yates' 7.05/194 in the first round beat his 7.144/192.59. Bruce was the first alternate back at Topeka for the NHRA Craftsman Nationals with a 7.168/191.40, and he was the sixth alternate for the NHRA Chief Nationals at 7.112/193.92. He ended his season as the third alternate for the NHRA World Finals with a 7.125/194.21. (Comp number changed to 50 to align with sponsor name. Formerly 3216.)

Notes: Rick Howard photo from 1996 US Nats, Indy. DNQ for Indy with best of 7.11/194.21 on a 7.10 bump. | The Reher and Morrison team was not running its best in '96. Driver Bruce Allen was hard-pressed to qualify at national events. At the season opening NHRA Winternationals, his 7.11/194.97 was good for the second alternate. Things were even worse at the NHRA Arizona Nationals, where he was the eighth alternate with a 7.12/194.42. Things were no different at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals where Bruce's 7.07/195.95 was the second alternate. The next NHRA event was the Slick 50 Nationals at Houston. Bruce tried hard, but his 7.09/194.51 ended up as the eighth alternate for the show. The team also attempted to qualify at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational, but a 7.08/194.21 (fourth alternate) failed to make the cut. Determination paid off the following week at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Bruce qualified for the first time since the '95 Keystone Nationals. His 7.08/194.97 got him the #12 spot. In the first round his 8.27/127.89 advanced when Steve Schmidt fouled. It wasn't pretty, but it was his first-round win in NHRA competition since the '93 Chief Nationals. Unfortunately, a second round 7.17/193.13 lost to Tom Martino's 7.08/194.
