Notes: Rickie was great with the big-inch IHRA Pro Stocks, but in NHRA Competition he was having a tough time just trying to qualify. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he was the second alternate with a best of 7.577/181.41. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he was the fourteenth alternate with a 7.611/181.89 best. He also ran 7.635/181.52 at Atlanta, 7.691/178.67 at Columbus, and 7.636/181.37 at Indy. None of these efforts qualified. Indy was Rickie's last NHRA event of the year. The car had white letters in a red field. Glidden had red letters in a white field. Photo from Gainesville 3/87. Formerly listed 7.532/183.29 but that did not occur on the NHRA circuit. We need validation.

Notes: This was the car and the team everybody was trying to beat in '83. Shepherd was impossible to "rattle" behind the wheel. Lee started the season by qualifying #5 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.87/174.41. He beat Jerry Eckman in the first round, with a 7.90. In the second round, he faced low qualifier Bob Glidden, and Shepherd fouled away a 7.85/174.41 while Bob advanced with a 7.93. Lee made up for his mistake by dominating the NHRA Gatornationals. His 7.67/181.08 (Top Speed) qualified #1. He then set Low ET of the meet in the opening round, where his 7.64/181.08 beat Johnny Dowey. In round two, Joe Lepone's 7.79/176 fell to his 7.70/180.00. He dumped Glidden in the semifinal with a 7.66/181.08 (again!) before facing Frank Iaconio in an all Camaro final. Iaconio knew he had to push the tree, and he did a little too hard, fouling away a 7.75/180 while Shepherd ran 7.68/180.00 for the victory. The next stop was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. This was an eight-car field, and Shepherd's 7.81/176.81 qualified #2 behind Iaconio's 7.80. Lee's 7.85/172.41 advanced past a fouling Bubba Corzine in the opening round, and in the semifinal, his 7.82/175.78 beat Warren Johnson's 7.86/174. He faced Lepone in the final, and Joe fouled, giving Lee his second win of the young season with a 9.21/105.75. He didn't have to wait long before winning again. That came on May 29 at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was another eight-car show, and he qualified #3 at 7.76/177.51. Corzine fouled against him again in the opening round, and Lee moved on with a 7.84/176.81. In the semifinal, a 7.82/177.16 beat Johnson. He faced Iaconio again in another final, and Lee's 7.76/177.86 scored the win. Ran best times of 7.652/181.81 at the OCIR World Finals. Earlier ran 181.81 at Indy. Lost on a holeshot to WJ in the race but came from behind to clinch his third straight Winston Pro Stock championship after points leader and No. 1 qualifier Frank Iaconio was upset by Reid Whisnant in round one. Notes: Campanello qualified #8 at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals with a 7.741/180.36. His 7.80/178.92 beat a fouling Brad Yuill in the opening round of eliminations. Unfortunately, Don fouled in the second round with a 7.82, losing to the eventual winner Warren Johnson's 7.67. His next stop was in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals in April. A 7.80/177.86 qualified #6, and in round one, a 7.82 beat "Dyno Don" Nicholson's 7.93. He then beat Ronnie Manchester and Ken Dondero in Bob Panella's Camaro to reach the final against Lee Shepherd. His should have been Campanello's race to win, but a late leaving 7.74/179.28 finished runner-up to Lee's 7.78/177. He qualified #13 at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, but he fouled away a 7.83 against Butch Leal's 7.79 in the opening round. Shortly after that, he was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. It was a sixteen-car show, and his 7.82 qualified #9. He lasted until round two before fouling against Bob Glidden. Don ran really well at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Nationals. He qualified #5 in the eight-car field with a 7.79/178.92. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Johnson. The two had a burn-down on the line with neither driver wanting to stage first. Warren finally staged, and Don followed, and the lite went green. Campanello timed it perfectly, and his 7.84 won while Johnson fouled away a 7.69. He went on to beat Frank Iaconio's 7.88 in the semifinals with a 7.82. This put him into the final against Dondero. Don tried hard, but his 7.80/174.08 finished runner-up to Dondero's 7.75/177. He failed to qualify at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Don also ran 7.79 at the Super Stock Nationals at Maple Grove. His Englishtown and Baton Rouge numbers were his NHRA national event bests for the year. He had a few good runner-up finishes, too.

Notes: Lepone qualified #8 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.758/179.28. He beat Sam Carroll in the opening round, 7.82/177 to 7.89 (foul), before losing a close one to Bob Glidden in round two, 7.82/174 to 7.85/177. He continued to qualify well at the NHRA Gatornationals, where his 7.744/179.28 qualified #9. The only problem with that is that it set up a first-round meeting with the low qualifier, Lee Shepherd. Joe must have been a little nervous as he fouled away a 7.91 while Shepherd ran 7.72 to advance. Atlanta was the next stop for the team for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Once again, Joe got the car qualified, running 7.854/177.16 for the #11 spot. In the first round of competition, his opponent, Don Coonce, broke, and Joe ran 7.89/176 to advance. But in round two, Glidden had his number, and Bob's 7.74/178 beat Lepone's 7.85/176. Qualifying wasn't too bad at Baton Rouge as only 20 cars showed for the sixteen-car field. Joe ran 7.825/178.57 for the #11 spot. But in round one, his 7.93/177 lost to the eventual winner Shepherd's 7.76/181. Joe qualified #9 again at Columbus with a 7.849/176.12, and WJ got him again in round one, 7.76/180 to 7.96/174. The team qualified #9 yet again in Quebec (7.765/178.92), and again, WJ won round one when Joe gambled and lost with a redlighting 8.04. The team qualified #12 at Englishtown with a 7.780/180.36. They upset DOn Coonce in round one, 7.79/177 to 7.94/163, and beat Gordie Rivera in round two, 7.80/176 to Gordie's redlight-initiated 7.84. Joe got the holeshot on Lee Shepherd in the semis, but the Reher-Morrison team came around him on the top end to take a 7.80/177 to 7.87/176 win. Joe qualified #3 at Denver with an 8.110/168.85. He made it to the semis with wins over Gordie Rivera and Rich Marino. But again, he faced Lee Shepherd and lost another close one, 8.12/168 to 8.19/171. They qualified #10 at Brainerd at 7.850/175.78, which put them up against nemesis Lee Shepherd (but in round one). Shepherd won, 7.80/176 to 7.85/176. At Indy, the Palmer Bros. Team broke into the top half of the field again, hissing 7.742/181.81 for #7. But Ken Dondero grabbed a holeshot win in round one, 7.82/180, to their 7.798/177. They raced at the World Finals to wrap up their NHRA tour. Joe ran 7.789/177.86 to grab the #11 spot. That put him up against - you guessed it - Lee Shepherd in round one. Again, close was no cigar, as Shepherd took the 7.71/178 to 7.79/177 win. A solid year for the team. Lepone finished eighth in NHRA's season-long points chase. Did Joe run 7.72 away from the NHRA tour?

Notes: Don ran 7.65/180.28 to qualify #3 at Pomona for the Winternationals. In the first round, he beat Frank Sanchez with a 7.66/179.85 before losing to Ken Dondero's 7.70/176 in round two with a 7.75/178.21. At the Gatornationals, a best of 7.78/175.84 failed to crack the 7.76 bump. Don made the show at the Southern Nationals with a 7.83/176.60 qualifying #14, but he lost to Dondero in the first round. The next NHRA event was the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge. Coonce qualified #9 with a 7.73/180.07, but again went home early. At the Springnationals in June, he again qualified in the dreaded #9 spot with a 7.72/178.35, setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Bob Glidden, which he lost. Don had the same thing happen to him at the next event, the Grandnationals, where he again qualified #9 (7.63/181.81) and again lost to the low qualifier (Bruce Allen) in the first round. He qualified #9 (again!) at the Summernationals with a 7.66, and in the first round, he fouled against Glidden. It was tough to make these shows, and Coonce was doing great in qualifying, but qualifying in the ninth spot was always a bad position as you had to run the low qualifier in the first round. Don had just qualified #9 at four meets in a row. Things went better at Denver, where he ran 8.02/172.41 to qualify #3 behind Glidden and Warren Johnson.

Notes: Frank qualified for his first NHRA National event at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He had run 7.72 and 7.75 in qualifying, and the 7.72 at 179.21 held up for the #11 spot in the show. Unfortunately, he lost to Don Coonce in the first round. After running so well there, it was surprising that he failed to qualify at the NHRA Gatornationals, where his 7.78/178.64 best was good for the first alternate. He followed the NHRA tour to Atlanta for the Southern Nationals, but he failed to make the show again. His 7.85/176.40 was the fifth alternate. He went to Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, and during qualifying, he made slight contact with the guardrail. Sanchez got it fixed and managed to qualify on the "bump" with a 7.76/181.81. In the first round, he got out of shape and shut off to 9.70 in a loss to Ken Dondero. The NHRA Springnationals had 34 cars attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field. Frank tried hard, but his 7.81/177.79 best was good for the fifth alternate. He was the second alternate in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals.

Notes: Photo from Milan, MI, 1985. Roy qualified #14 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.685/181.81. A first-round 7.69/179.64 lost to Jerry Eckman's 7.63/176. He failed to qualify at the NHRA Gatornationals, running 7.770/177.69. After that, he didn't attend any other NHRA events until the World Finals, instead concentrating on the "big inch" match races and IHRA events. He was a 7.729/178.89 DNQ at the Pomona Finals, but was that in the Tempo or another car (possibly the Pennys’ Firenza out of Chicago)?

Notes: Ferra had nothing but problems at Gainesville while attempting to qualify for the NHRA Gatornationals. The best he could run was 9.06/167.91, far from the 7.41 "bump." Ralph was at Englishtown near the end of March for its Manufacturer's Pro Stock Showdown. It was an eight-car field, and he ended up as the first alternate with a 7.86/167.59. He also competed at the Super Stock Nationals at Maple Grove. A 7.68 qualified #7 in the eight-car field. He slowed to a losing 8.12/176.81 in the first round that lost to Joe Lepone's 7.63/182. Ralph ran several NHRA national events with best times from Sanair at 7.578/181.81. Photo from 1988 US Nationals.

Notes: The 7.46/181.81 was originally listed under Paul Gantt in 1990. However, Paul died in a crash at Moroso in November 1987. We assume the times were Harold's, who drove the car in 1990. Slight chance the times were Paul's from 1987 or earlier, but that is probably too fast for this car in those years.

Notes: NHRA & UDRA. Mike ran 7.591/181.67 at Indy (DNQ). We need to ensure it was in this car and not the Big Drag & Co. machine (for which we do not have an entry for 1990). Also, Mike did not qualify at NHRA Columbus at 7.704/170.94.

Notes: Dave ran at several NHRA national events. He started slowly but eventually started running some good times by the end of the year. At Englishtown, he ran 8.445/133.23. Dave improved to 8.038/169.52 at Richmond but the slowest alternate there. He could only get an 8.650/149.65 at Columbus and an 8.257/177.69 at the Western Auto Parts Nationals, again anchored the DNQ list. Dave started coming around at Brainerd, where his 7.929/180.39 still was the slowest of the DNQ list but was a step in the right direction. However, he had nothing but trouble at Indy, and his 9.268/131.73 again brought up the rear. Dave was at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. He was the twenty-first alternate with a 7.531/181.63 best, showing continued improvement. That was Dave's final national event of the year.

Notes: Ken swapped into Ronnie Manchester's car for a few late-season races. He was driving this car at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. Twenty-nine cars were attempting to qualify, and his 7.626/181.52 qualified #10. Despite running well, a 7.671/179.49 in the first round lost to WJ's 7.57/183. According to our records, Ken was back in the Dondero car at the Phoenix Fallnationals. He qualified #3 at 7.670/179.28. Ken best Gordie Rivera in round one, 7.766/177.86 to 8.355/130.43. In round two, he beat Frank Sanchez, 7.756/178.21 to 7.866/176.12. In the semis, Bob Glidden got the better of Ken, 7.671/180.36 to 7.804/177.86. Ken was driving a Trans Am at the World Finals at Pomona. We must validate whether this was the Ronnie Manchester car or a new Panella machine. He qualified #3 at 7.635/181.30. He broke in round one, but Dave Hutchens fouled, so Ken advanced. In round two, he beat Pete Smith, 7.721/179.71 to 7.867/178.07. Ken lost a close one to Bruce Allen in the semis, 7.652/181.23 to 7.678/180.21. We are listing the Finals times with the Ronnie Manchester car for now, but we need confirmation. At this time, we are listing the 7.670 from Phoenix with this car, although there is a possibility there was a new Dondero Trans Am that should get those times, plus those from the World Finals. Who can answer this mystery?

Notes: Warren did not compete at the NHRA Winternationals. The reason for this was that NHRA did not approve his cylinder heads. He was at Moroso Motorsports Park for the NHRA Division Two race held shortly after. This is where he debuted his new Cutlass and showed up with a new 18-wheeler to haul it in. It was an eight-car show, and WJ qualified #2 with a 7.91/174.41. He won his opening race over Russell Jung with a 7.85/175.09 (Low ET and Top Speed). Unfortunately, in the semifinal, his late 7.91/174.41 lost to Wayne Ellison's 8.04/171. At the Gatornationals, he qualified #3 with a 7.71/178.57. He slept on the line in the first round, and his 7.73/177 lost to Carlton Phillips' 7.77/176. I believe he was still running the 500 cubic inch engine at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. His 7.77/177.86 qualified second to Lee Shepherd's 7.71/178.A 7.87/172.08 beat Phillips 8.03/174 in the opening round. He reached the final, where he ran Shepherd. The two had a good race, but Lee's 7.69/181 got the better of WJ's 7.72/180.36. He then went to Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. It was only an eight-car field, and his 7.84/174.75 qualified #4. In the first round, he faced Phillips again, and WJ's 7.87/172.74 beat Carlton's 8.04/172. But in the semifinals, eventual winner Shepherd's 7.82/175 beat his 7.86/174.08. He had an interesting day at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. He actually got beat twice. He lost to Shepherd in the semifinal, but Lee forgot to weigh in after the race, and WJ was reinstated. He went up against Rickie Smith in the final, losing for the second time.WJ then went to Baton Rouge at the end of May for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. His 7.69 (Low ET) at 177.86 qualified #1. In the opening round, his 7.75/177.16 beat Joe Lepone's 7.92/174. In the semifinal, the pesky Camaro from Texas beat him, Lee's 7.82/177 beat WJ's late 7.77/177.86. He then went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He always ran well at Bristol, and '83 was no exception. His 7.86/178 qualified #3. His best run came in round two, where a 7.83/181.45 beat Roy Hill's Capri. But once again, he lost to Shepherd in the semifinal. WJ won the World Finals at OCIR, his first in exactly one year. WJ qualified his Hurst Olds third with a 7.658 and, in eliminations, ran 7.68, 7.70, 7.71, and 7.69, defeating Rickie Smith, Jerry Eckman, Bob Glidden, and Lee Shepherd (on a holeshot to Shepherd's 7.68). Warren's best NHRA speed was 181.08 at Indy.

Notes: Sam qualified #15 at the Gatornationals with a 7.83/176.81. Unfortunately, he was unable to run in eliminations, and first alternate Reid Whisnant filled in. At the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta in April, Sam again qualified. This time he ran a 7.86/176.12 for the #13 spot in the field. A first-round 7.99 lost to Lee Shepherd's 7.85. Sam had one of his best outings at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals in July. He qualified #15 with a 7.79 and made it all the way to the semifinals before his 7.90 lost to Bob Glidden's 7.71. He won an eight-car show at Moroso Motorsports Park in September. He ran 7.79/177.16 to qualify #2 and then beat Jeff Taylor's 8.01/175 in the first round, with a 7.90/173.41. In the semifinals, he advanced when Jeff Velde fouled. A final round 7.94/170.77 took the victory over Whisnant's ailing Daytona at 8.70/105. Sam tried hard to make the field at the season-ending NHRA World Finals, but his best of 7.84 was good for the first alternate.

Notes: National Dragster cites 83 Camaro at NHRA Maple Grove. We need to confirm. | Don qualified #15 at Pomona for the Winternationals with a 7.75/178.64. A 7.84/176.67 in the first round, lost to Ken Dondero's 7.67/180. At the Gatornationals, a 7.73/178.42 qualified #9, forcing him to run low qualifier Bob Glidden in the first round. Don lost that one when he broke on the line. The next event was the Southern Nationals held in Atlanta. He qualified #7 with a 7.77/179.49. In the first round, his 7.80/177.72 beat Joe Lepone and a second-round 7.82/176.70 beat Bruce Allen. But in the semifinals, he fouled away a 7.79 against Glidden. Don continued to improve. At the Cajun Nationals, he again qualified #7, but this time he ran a 7.70/178.07 to do it. He failed to make the final round, however. The Springnationals was the next event on the NHRA tour, and a 7.73/178.57 qualified #10. He lost to Allen's 7.66/175 in round one, with a 7.80/178.21. He was in Canada for the Grandnationals, where a 7.64/181.37 qualified #11. A first-round 7.68/180.14 beat Frank Iaconio's 7.71/178, and in round two, his 7.69/176.47 advanced when Dempsey Hardy fouled. In the semifinals, Don's 7.74/178.64 lost to eventual winner Allen's 7.58/183. The times kept getting lower for Campanello and at the Summernationals, a 7.63/179 qualified #7.
